Breast Cancer Tribute with #96 Ask.com Car
and Bobby Labonte

Today, October 1st 2009, the entire Ask.com homepage is dedicated to the brave survivors of breast cancer and to those lost.

Celebrate with us and Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and help turn the Ask.com page into the biggest online memorial ever, by adding up to three tributes for your loved ones and yourself. Spread the word and let us not rest until we end breast cancer forever!

I made a breast cancer ribbon tribute for my loved one, "my inspiring Sister-In-Law!" I also sponsored my other Sister-In-Law who will be participating in the 2009 Komen Maryland Race for the Cure held in Hunt Valley, Maryland, on Sunday, October 18th!

Your participation will help support the Komen promise of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality for all and energizing science to find the cures.

Because early detection is the best protection for breast cancer, Komen Maryland sponsors grants that increase the number of women who have annual mammograms and clinical breast exam screenings. Komen grants also target the entire range of breast health services from transportation to appointments and financial support to clinical trials and national research to find a cure.

As a team, we can make the difference!

Since its inception, NASCAR has been a sport of statistics. From lap times to RPMs, the numbers behind the speed have captivated millions and provided a quantifiable measuring stick for evaluating racing greatness.

However as the Chase heads to Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Oct. 17, multiple teams will be running pink paint schemes to recognize some drastically scarier Breast Cancer Awareness Month statistics, including:

  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during their life;
  • 465,000 moms, wives and daughters will die of breast cancer in the U.S. this year alone;
  • Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. among women;
    * According to the American Cancer Society

Among those taking a stand to help curb breast cancer is the No. 96 Ask.com team led by Bobby Labonte. To help recognize fans who have been affected by breast cancer, Ask.com is offering the opportunity to have a loved one’s name incorporated into Labonte’s pink Susan G. Komen tribute paint scheme by visiting Ask.com on Oct. 1 and making a free tribute to honor survivors, those living with breast cancer or in special memoriam of those lost to the disease. The tributes will be featured on the car for the upcoming Oct. 17 race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. This effort is part of a multi-faceted partnership program Ask.com has with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The program includes a $1 million commitment to the organization.

I will be visiting Ask.com tomorrow and making my tribute to my sister-in-law. Moses' Auntie has been his biggest supporter for years and use to come to the go-kart track to video tape his races! Of course, she and her family voted for Moses for the NASCAR Camping World Series West Most Popular Driver award daily!

Being featured on the No. 96 Ask.com Car is an awesome way to thank her and show our support for her brave battle well fought.

Top Five In Finale

The 2009 championship in the NASCAR Camping World Series West was decided in the season finale, the Toyota/Copart “150,” on Saturday night at the All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif. The #16 Hasa Pool Products Driver Moses Smith qualified his Toyota in second position.

"The car was awesome," Moses reported. "We had a little too much rear brake bias and I chattered the rear-end going into turn two and that let a couple guys get by. I think we were faster, but we just didn't have enough to get by. It was a good race. It was fun. We were in the thick of thing the whole time."

Moses took the checkered flag in fifth. With this finish, he earned his second Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award, racing his #16 HASA Pool Products/White Flyer, Toyota Camry. With five top-five and nine top-ten finishes in the thirteen race championship.

Moses finished the season in seventh place. Moses and the Team gives a special thanks to their sponsors: Hasa Pool Products, White Flyer, and TCI Transportation.

MSR Hosts Barbecue at the 2009 Runoffs

Moses Smith Racing (MSR) is excited and proud to aquire the manufacturing, sales, and support for the Standard Formula Mazda.

“This is an exciting new venture and has been a long time coming for us. The Standard Formula Mazda is the car that started my Professional Racing Career and since then I have driven many different types of race cars such as Pro Formula Mazda, Atlantic Championship, Indy pro Series, Koni Challenge and NASCAR, but my heart has always had a sweet spot for the Standard FM. I became a dealer for Star Mazda in 2004 not only to support the Standard FM, but to also put MSR in a position to one day hopefully take on the responsibility of building, maintaining, and supplying parts for the car, and being responsible for the car and class integrity. This has been a dream and goal for a long time, and I am very excited to see this come together!” (Quote by owner Moses Smith)

With these new changes MSR would also like to announce their new website at www.mosessmithracing.com . This site contains news articles, results, photo galleries, a schedule of races and events that MSR will be attending.

Soon the site will be interactive allowing registered drivers and crew to add articles, update results, and submit photos. One of their goals is to have a Formula Mazda driver listing; therefore they will be requesting FM racers for info in the coming months.

Also on this new site is a link to the MSR newly revamped FM Online Parts Store. You can also follow Moses Smith Racing’s Formula Mazda’s efforts on facebook and twitter:

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the changes that are taking place and/or anything else related to the Standard Formula Mazda, please do not hesitate to contact Moses:

Moses Smith Continues Climb
at All American Speedway

For the second year in a row, the Camping World West Series championship has come down to the final race of the year. The Toyota Copart 150 presented by Golden State Steel and Stair, which is the second CWWS race in Roseville this season, features some of the best stock car drivers in the west.

This prestigious group of rough-and-tumble short track racers includes three drivers who race for local team owner Bill McAnally of BMR Racing. They are Eric Holmes, driver of the No. 20 NAPA AutoParts Toyota (last year's CWWS champion), No. 12 NAPA AutoCare Toyota driver Paulie Harraka (2008 NASCR Whelen All American Late Model Series champion at AAS), and Moses Smith, driver of the No. 16 HASA Pool Products Toyota.

Smith, who is in his third year racing full-time in the CWWS, has made great strides over the past three seasons improving his performance. In 2006, after having raced a limited schedule, he finished 28th in points. In 2007 he moved up to 12th, and in 2008 he ranked sixth. This year Smith has had three top-five finishes and seven top-10 finishes.

The San Diego native who now makes his home in Tempe, AZ, started his racing career in go-karts and branched out from there. He worked as a racing instructor at Jim Hall Racing School, Bob Bondurant School of High Performance and Skip Barber Racing School. He was a test driver for Star Mountain Racing and a crew chief for a Star Mazda Pro team and a USAC Midget Team.

In 2000 Smith got his big break in a Standard Formula Mazda car. He has also raced in SCCA, Toyota Atlantic and the Infiniti Pro Series. He became a Star Mazda team owner in 2004, and an official Standard Formula Mazda dealer in 2006. In 2007 he made his Grand-Am debut in the KONI Challenge, and in 2007 he became a Grand National West Series driver on a full-time basis.

HASA Pool Products has sponsored Smith for seven years.

"HASA is a West Coast based company and they wanted to bring their racing effort closer to home," Smith said. "Our racing was starting more and more to move to the Midwest and East Coast when I was in open wheel racing, so we looked at avenues out west and the CWWS looked like a good fit."

HASA and Smith liked the fact that the CWWS had TV coverage, a lot of fans and the high level of competition in the Series.

"I tested for Bill McAnally Racing and Bill liked what he saw and we liked what we saw, so we put a deal together between BMR, MSR, and HASA,” Smith said. "I think I am one of the luckiest guys in the series when it comes to sponsorship. HASA is great. I get to do meet and greets at pool shows, at distributors, and company parties and picnics. My performance outside the car is just as important as my duties inside the car. When I am on the track I have to race clean, put on a good shown and finish up front."

Smith has experience in Truck and Super Late Model racing, but since joining CWWS, he has focused on racing stock cars. He credits fellow CWWS driver Mike David for being a big help to him in the Series.

"Mike David has helped me a lot and I have a good team and a good crew chief. This year I have more experience and I'm much more comfortable with the car," Smith said. "I am excited to be coming back to Roseville.”

Smith loves the CWWS fans and was voted Most Popular Driver by the fans in 2008. This year fans have until Sept. 26 to vote for their Most Popular Driver in CWWS by going to: http://www.nascar.com/news/features/mpd.poll.camping.world.west/index.html.

Smith said he wants to continue to gain more experience and his hopes and dreams are to move up the NASCAR ladder. He owns Moses Smith Racing, a Mazda dealership, race prep shop and online store specializing in Standard FM Parts and hardware.

Star Race Cars and MSR announced last week that Moses Smith Racing, LLC, headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, will take over all support for the approximately 300 Standard FM rotary-powered race cars currently in use across North America, as well as the MRS sports racer, a full-bodied version of the Standard FM.

This Saturday, All American Speedway will not only be the venue for the final race of the Camping World West Series (the Toyota Copart 150 presented by Golden State Steel and Stair and hosted by Bill McAnally), but the program will also include the USAC Western Sprint Cars in the Riebes Auto Parts 100 and the USAC Midgets.

As an added bonus, there will be a 20-lap race celebrating the City of Roseville's 100th birthday that features local TV and radio personalities racing for charity. All the celebrity drivers have been practicing for the last couple of weeks to get ready for the race, trying to match up to the pros.

Not every city in the country can boast of having a local track that showcases local racers in four major divisions, as does All American Speedway.

Moses Smith is in good company.

Looking For Overdue Win At AAS

Three top-ten finishes in as many starts at All American Speedway for driver Moses Smith, pilot of the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry. He’ll be looking to return the No. 16 Toyota Camry on the podium after a third place finish at the NASCAR Camping World Series West season finale last season at All American Speedway. The driver from Bill McAnally Racing is currently running in seventh in the chase for the series championship and only 50 points out of the top five. Winning the Toyota/Copart “150” would be a great way to finish his third season in the NASCAR Camping World Series West.

“I can’t believe we are heading to the last race of the year already,” said Smith. “This has really been an up and down year, but I think we have really built momentum with a 3rd place finish at Colorado, and being fastest in practice at Iowa, we are well over due for a win at BMR’s home track, All American Speedway.”

The NASCAR Camping World Series West race, the Toyota/Copart “150” will be held at All American Speedway on Sept. 26th. The race will be televised on October 8th on SPEED TV at noon pacific time. Media Members Prepare For Race

Special event slated at All American Speedway
by Kevin W. Green

Bob Moffitt (in car) chats with Brian Hickey (center) and Mark S. Allen during
their initial training session for the upcoming race for members of the media at
All American Speedwayin Roseville, Calif. (Doug Day)

Media celebrities from the Sacramento, Calif., market will get a completely new perspective on racing in an upcoming event at All American Speedway. Instead of reporting about the race, members of the media will be behind the wheel of a stock car, competing in the special media event on the third-mile oval in Roseville, Calif.

The 20-lap race, known as the A-ALL Mini Storage Media Blitz 100 brought to you by Comcast, will be a preliminary event on a big night of racing at the historic fairgrounds facility that culminates with the final race of the season for the NASCAR Camping World Series West – the Toyota/Copart 150.

Bill McAnally – whose company, BMRP, promotes the NASCAR Camping World Series West events at Roseville, along with several other series races during the season – came up with the idea for the media event.

“It’s always been fun working with the local media,” McAnally said. “They have always shown a lot of interest in NASCAR racing. So, we’re going to give them an opportunity to get involved and get into a NASCAR race car for a race. We’re really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Television and radio personalities from the greater Sacramento area have already begun preparing for the race. They are undergoing two training sessions and will also get time on the track during a practice session the night before their big event. The $1,000 winner’s purse will be donated to the charity of their choice.

For news reporter Brian Hickey of NBC’s Sacramento television affiliate, KCRA Channel 3, the event holds plenty special meaning.

“This is a dream come true,” Hickey said. “Racing was in my blood and family even before I was born. My Dad, Tom "Tricky" Hickey, used to drive race cars and still talks about his career like it was yesterday. To get behind the wheel of a Bill McAnally race car is just incredible. This opportunity has ignited the need for speed in my whole family and I just can't wait to see, hear, and feel the rumble of NASCAR beneath my seat. I'm living the dream and having a great time sharing it with my Dad.”

In addition to Hickey, other members of the media preparing to get behind the wheel include Dave Bender, the evening weather anchor on CBS television affiliate KOVR Channel 13; Mark Demsky, sportscaster on FOX television affiliate KTXL Channel 40; Mark S. Allen, co-host for the Good Day Sacramento television show; Dave Kelly, morning show co-host on 101.9 The Wolf radio station; and Bob Moffitt, radio reporter on NewsTalk 1530 KFBK.

Several other members of the media, meanwhile, will join in the action as passengers in several of the cars that are outfitted as two-seater race cars. Natalie Bomke, television morning anchor on Channel 40 will ride with Mark Demsky; Brandi Hitt, television news anchor and reporter on Channel 13 will ride Dave Bender; and Susan Brown will ride with Dave Kelly, her co-host of the morning show on 101.9 The Wolf.

While some of them have been interested in racing for years, others are newcomers to the sport.

Mark Demsky has an extensive background of covering racing as a broadcaster and has been on track in school cars.

“I've covered NASCAR and the Indy Car Series for nearly 20 years,” said Demsky, who hosts a weekly auto racing show on Sports 1140 Radio, KHTK in Sacramento. “I've gone through the Richard Petty Driving Experience in Las Vegas, and have done a portion of the Jim Russell Racing School over in Sonoma. This will be my first actual race though.”

Dave Bender brings with him a similar background.

“I usually go at least once a year to a NASCAR race with my dad,” he said. “We've been to the Brickyard, ORP, Charlotte, Altlanta, Texas Motor Speedway, Phoenix, and Sonoma. I've also had eight hot laps in a Richard Petty Driving Experience NASCAR at Fontana. We hit about 155mph. I just love this stuff. This is a chance of a lifetime to see what it's like to trade some paint.”

Bender’s passenger for the event, Brandi Hitt, is fairly new to the sport, meanwhile.

“I have no auto racing background, but I did pass my driving test the first time,” she said. “When you think about it, I also crashed my first car in Lodi when I was 16.”

Nevertheless, she is looking forward to the upcoming event. “This is so exciting,” she said. “I want to burn rubber and leave those other news crews in the dust – all for charity, of course.”

Sprint Cup Sponsors Beware

Debates surrounding Sprint Cup Drivers invading the ranks of full-time Nationwide Drivers race rampage. I had foolishly thought that the Nationwide Series was supposed to be a proving ground for young “little known” drivers to compete against one another to see who was worthy of making it to the next level. However, you only need to check the statistics to realize that this is a falsehood.

In a recent Nationwide race (Atlanta – September 5) the top-ten qualifiers were Dale Earnhardt Jr.; Kevin Harvick; David Ragan; Reed Sorenson; Kasey Kahne; David Gilliland; Trevor Bayne; Kyle Busch; Paul Menard; and Dave Blaney. Only the talented Trevor Bayne could be considered a Non-Cup Driver.

The top-ten finishing order of that race (the Degree V12 300) did not include a single Non-Cup Driver. (Winner Kevin Harvick; Kyle Busch; Dale Earnhardt Jr.; Brad Keselowski; Jeff Burton; Joey Logano; Carl Edwards; Greg Biffle; David Ragan; and Reed Sorenson.)

Weighing the pros and cons of a Nationwide Series that would be a truly unique series with unique drivers has been covered in the past (Cup stars in the Nationwide Series leave young drivers on the sidelines)

However, NASCAR Race Mom ponders if regularly competing in the Nationwide Series could negatively impact a Cup Driver’s standings in the Sprint Cup Chase. We are all aware that the Nationwide Championship Points leader, Kyle Busch missed the Chase by one position this year. Could his Sprint Cup performance have been hindered by his Nationwide race activities?

The statistics proved very interesting. The top seven drivers in the 2009 Sprint Cup Chase participated in three or less Nationwide races. Of the remaining five Chase qualifiers, only Carl Edwards participated in the Nationwide Series on a full-time basis.

Are the numbers a coincidence, or does competing in more than one series become a negative force in a driver’s Sprint Cup on-track performance?

Realistically, this study is too superficial to stake any such claim. However, as the mom of a NASCAR Driver (Moses Smith #16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry – Camping World Series West) who would love to move up the NASCAR Ladder, NRM would have to say a resounding “yes!” Sponsors should be aware of the numbers.

Moses Smith Racing
to Manufacture Standard FM and MSR

STAR RACE CARS ANNOUNCES MOSES SMITH RACING TO TAKE OVER MANUFACTURING, SALES AND SUPPORT OF STANDARD FM AND FULL-BODY MSR RACE CARS

Pacoima, CA / Tempe, AZ (September 7, 2009)-Star Race Cars and Moses Smith Racing today jointly announced that Moses Smith Racing, LLC. (MSR), headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, will take over all support for the approximately 300 Standard FM rotary-powered race cars currently in use across North America, as well as the MSR sports racer, a full-bodied version of the Standard FM.

Moses Smith Racing (MSR), already a dealer, race prep shop and operator of an on-line store with a complete catalog of Standard FM Parts and associated hardware, will re-build existing cars, manufacture new cars and parts and handle all sales and service.

"Moses Smith has long been one of our strongest supporters and most pro-active FM dealers," says Gary Rodrigues, President and CEO of Star Race Cars, which will continue to produce the 'Pro' Formula Mazda and operate the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear racing series. "A lot of today's top drivers got their start in the Standard FM and hundreds of these cars continue to be raced on a regular basis. This is one of the most reliable, cost-efficient and competitive open-wheel cars in motorsports history and Moses Smith Racing is the ideal organization to not only keep the current fleet of FM cars racing, but also to expand into new areas like driving schools and regional spec racing series."

The history of the Star Race Cars Standard FM extends back to 1990, with a strong, simple design makes it an easy car to drive, inspiring confidence for novices and pros alike. Standard FM cars are tube-frame, fiberglass-body, open-wheel race cars weighing 1350 pounds (with driver) and powered by a 180 horsepower, Mazda 13B rotary engine mated to a 5-speed racing transaxle. Features include 4-wheel disc brakes, double-wishbone and rocker-arm suspension, front and rear wings, adjustable sway bars and Goodyear racing slicks. Top speed is 140 mph and 0 to 60 mph acceleration is under four seconds.

MSR has already re-manufactured and supplied twenty Standard FM cars for the new, 9-race Bob Bondurant Championship Race Series taking place during the 2009-10 season at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona. Other series, such as the Molecule Formula Mazda Challenge in Northern California, and Cartech FM Challenge in the Midwest utilize the Standard FM open-wheel car; it is also one of the largest and most competitive classes in the Sports Car Club of America. MSR will support Standard FM racers at the upcoming SCCA National RunOffs at Road America, in Elkhart Lake, WI. Sept. 21 – 27, with parts, technical assistance and a contingency program.

“The Standard Formula Mazda is the car that started my Professional Racing Career,' says Smith. "Since then I have driven many different types of race cars such as Pro Formula Mazda, Atlantic Championship, Indy pro Series, Koni Challenge and NASCAR, but my heart has always had a sweet spot for the Standard FM. I became a dealer for Star Mazda in 2004 not only to support the Standard FM, but to also put MSR in a position to one day hopefully take on the responsibility of building, maintaining, and supplying parts for the car, and be responsible for the car and class integrity. This has been a dream and goal for a long time, and I am very excited to see this come together!”

Smith, who began his career as a racing school mechanic, began competing in Formula Mazda events in 2001, eventually becoming one of the top drivers in the series. He finished 2nd in the Star Mazda Series North American Championship with four wins; he finished third in the series championship in 2003 and sixth in 2004. In 2006, with the encouragement of his current sponsor HASA Inc., Smith made the switch to NASCAR; he is currently in his third full season as a driver in the NASCAR Camping World Series West.

Hasa Toyota Team At Iowa Speedway

Moses Smith, pilot of the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry was fastest on the track during the first practice of the day at Iowa Speedway. The team from Bill McAnally Racing was there for the twelfth NASCAR Camping World Series West race in the 2009 season. It was the series second visit to Iowa Speedway this year. The series was the companion event for the debut of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at the track in the heartland.

The second practice had the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/White Flyer Toyota Camry mid-pack as the track conditions continued to change in the heat of the day and after additional rubber was laid down by the NCW Trucks. Smith qualified the No. 16 Hasa Toyota on the inside of row seven.

As the race began under the lights, Smith radioed in at lap 57 to his crew chief Mario Isola that the car was ‘tight off’ the corners. He also told his team at the break at lap 75 that the Hasa Toyota was ‘tight in the middle’. The team went to work making changes during the allotted time.

During a caution at lap 92, the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota returned to the pits. The team opened the hood as water was leaking from a radiator connector valve. It took some time to replace the connector causing the No. 16 Hasa Toyota to go laps down. Smith would finish in 26th.

“That was rough,” said Smith. “When the connector broke, one of the team members got a face full of water. That was a scary moment. Thank goodness the water was cold. We fought hard but there’s not much you can do with a mechanical failure. The team loves our home track in Roseville so I feel confident that we will do well there.”

The NASCAR Camping World Series West race, the Central Iowa Building & Construction Trades “125” will be televised on September 10th on SPEED TV at noon pacific time. Check your local listings. The season finale will be at All American Speedway in Roseville, California on September 26.

Please logon to NASCAR Local Racing and vote for Moses Smith to repeat as the NASCAR Camping World Serie West Most Popular Driver Award.

As in the past, the ‘At the Track’ segment will be blogging all the pre-race activities of the NASCAR Camping World Series West Race.

******* NASCAR Race Mom will also be tweeting Moses’ Race, green flag to checkered!

You can follow the action on twitter by following @MosesRace.

You can also read the updates on the live blog above.

If you want to participate in the action:

  1. Leave a tweet using the #MosesRace hashtag. Your tweet will automatically be posted to the live blog also. Tweets will appear in the live blog almost immediately.

Tweet any questions you have to @MosesRace.. (Please do not leave a dm - it is usually too dark at the track to switch back and forth.)

  2. You can also leave a post in the comment box located at the bottom of the live blog. (However tweeting is much faster)

Important – when NASCAR Race Mom signs off the blog - please feel free to leave any comments and questions while we are gone - NRM will see them as soon as we log back in. If you are a first time user, your input might not appear on this blog until we return and approve them. However, rest assured that they will be saved and answered.

NASCAR Race Mom will be checking for activity on this Blog frequently!
