Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America Contest

***Win an autographed Kyle Petty Charity
Ride Across America Event Hat***

Kyle Richard Petty is an American NASCAR driver and racing analyst. He drove the #45 Wells Fargo/Marathon Petroleum Company Dodge Charger for Petty Enterprises. He also appeared in the 1983 Burt Reynolds movie Stroker Ace.

***** Congratulations to our winner - Miranda Ward!

Bikers from across the state and country pulled out of the zMAX Dragway in Charlotte for the eighth annual Ride to Victory. The fundraiser benefits the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

Kyle Petty said while the rides are a lot of fun, they pale in comparison to the end result that they achieve. "These are people who give up a Sunday afternoon to come out and ride motorcycles and hopefully we'll be able to send a bunch of kids to camp," said Petty.

Here are the results from the event:
  • Over 500 riders and approximately 400 motorcycles participated in the 8th Annual Ride to Victory: A Tribute to Click Baldwin;
  • It was a beautiful sunny day and they raised $20,000, enough money to send eight kids to Victory Junction for a summer session;
  • Celebrities in attendance included: Kyle Petty, Harry Gant, Waddell Wilson, Max Papis, Doug Herbert, Eddie Gossage of Texas Motor Speedway & Robert D. Raiford of the John Boy & Billy Show;
  • NASCAR Dads in attendance: Tom Logano, Gary Johnson and Chris Bowyer;
  • The entire ride was led by police escort and riders took a trip down the zMAX Dragway and participated in a "classic" Charity Ride pit stop at Pilot Flying J in Kannapolis, N.C.;
  • They performed a "Victory Lap" around Victory Junction to the cheers of Victory Junction campers and staff;
  • The ride ended with a Songwriters' Jam and raffle at Kyle Petty's Adaumont Farms. The lucky winners were able to choose from an autographed Richard Petty car hood, a signed Brian Vickers helmet, designer Harley-Davidson items, among many others;
  • Songwriters' performed famous country music hits recorded by Garth Brooks, Sara Evans, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney and many more.

Smith Survives Wild Short Track Race

The #16 Hasa Pool Products team managed to elongate their “top-ten finish” record at the All American Speedway in Roseville, CA during the wild night of Saturday short track racing. Smith has the most top-10 finishes, being the only driver to finish in the top 10 in all six series visits to the track since 2008.

However, that battle to an eighth place finish was hard-fought and not attractive. After several NASCAR K&N Pro Series West races that showcased the high caliber of skillful racing talent in the series, yesterday’s race was plagued with a red flag within the first ten laps and numerous caution periods though-out the one hundred and fifty lap feature. The “lappers” appeared to be out of control for most of the race.

Moses Smith qualified his Toyota Camry in the middle of the pack and chased the green flag from thirteenth position on the grid of twenty-three competitors. By lap seven, he drove though the five car pile-up which produced a red flag to clean up the oil spill that circled the entire oval. On lap fifteen, Moses restarted the competition from sixth place.

During the balance of the race, which was accentuated by eight caution periods, for total of sixty-one yellow flag laps, the #16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota thrilled the over five hundred Hasa customers in attendance with intense restarts. The side by side duels brought roaring cheers from the fans as Moses preserved his position in the top-ten throughout the race.

“Tough night...finished 8th...still 4th over all...looking forward to Phoenix in a couple of weeks,” Moses reported on Facebook.

The Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 will air on the SPEED channel on Thursday, October 21 at 3:00 p.m. (PT). The action packed event should provide exciting television coverage.

Race Statistics: Time of Race - 1 hour 3 minutes 25 seconds; Margin of Victory - .406 seconds; Fastest Qualifier - Eric Holmes (87.059 mph, 13.77 seconds); Caution Flags - 9 for 61 laps; Lead Changes - 10 among 3 drivers.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West will close out its 2010 campaign on Saturday, November 13 in the 3 Amigos Tequila 125 at Phoenix International Raceway.

Phoenix International Raceway has finalized its fan schedule of events for the November 11-14 Kobalt Tools 500 event weekend, including races in four different NASCAR series: Sprint Cup, Nationwide, Camping World Trucks and the K&N Pro Series West.

As part of a date move to November 13 for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West season finale – a race that will be part of double-header action following PIR’s WYPALL* 200 in the Nationwide Series – fans will be offered unprecedented West Series garage access.

Unofficial Point Standings: 1. E. Holmes, 1822; 2. D. Mayhew, 1666; 3. P. Harraka, 1614; 4. M. Smith, 1544; 5. L. Martinez,Jr., 1514; 6. J. Gomez, 1500; 7. G. Pursley, 1456; 8. M. Self, 1410; 9. T. Souza, 1375; 10. T. Milburn, 1312.

Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon

Junior Johnson autographing bottles of Midnight Moon
Junior Johnson was born ‘Robert Glenn Johnson, Junior’ on June 28, 1931. Although he is better known as a NASCAR superstar of the ‘50s and 60’s, many have forgotten that Junior Johnson was first a moonshiner from the rural south.

Running shining in North Carolina developed his driving expertise and the local police cruisers were never able to catch him as he was delivering moonshine to the family’s customers. In fact, Johnson is credited with inventing the "bootleg turn," in which a driver escapes a pursuer by sharply putting his speeding car into a 180-degree turn on the highway, then speeding off in the opposite direction before his pursuer can turn around.

After his first season as a NASCAR driver (1955), federal tax agents arrested Junior Johnson for working at his father's still in Wilkes County. He was convicted of moonshining and was sent to the federal prison where he served eleven months of a two-year sentence. *

Junior returned to the NASCAR scene full-time in 1958, and the rest is NASCAR history. From his very first race in 1953 to his retirement in 1966, Johnson participated in 313 races with 50 wins, 46 poles and 148 top-ten finishes. Johnson is also credited with discovering the now common tactic of “drafting.”

Coming full circle, in May 2007, Piedmont Distillers, a folksy distillery in North Carolina, and Junior Johnson teamed up to introduce a product, called Midnight Moon. “We called it Midnight Moon, because, we would always move our moonshine after midnight,” Mr. Johnson explained.

It was my honor to meet Junior Johnson before a bottle signing in Temecula, California. “The original family recipe was 100 proof,” Junior Johnson recalled, “we had to tone it down a bit . . . . Midnight Moon is triple stilled to remove all impurities and is 80 proof.”

Junior Johnson’s southern charm revealed itself quickly. Who was his favorite driver as a team owner? “Junior Johnson,” he stated with a charming smile and no hesitation, “Running that moonshine gave me the more driving experience over the other fellows.”

To all the young NASCAR Drivers, Mr. Johnson offered this advice, “Treat your fellow drivers with respect and drive clean.”

Junior Johnson’s Awards:
  • He was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998.

  • He was inducted in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1991.

  • Johnson joined N.C. greats Michael Jordan, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty by having a stretch of highway named in his honor in 2004. An 8.5.-mile (13.7 km) stretch of U.S. Highway 421 from the Yadkin and Wilkes county line to the Windy Gap exit is named "Junior Johnson Highway."

  • He was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on May 23, 2010.

*On December 26, 1986, President Ronald Reagan granted Johnson a presidential pardon for his 1956 Moonshining Conviction.

NASCAR Race Mom and Junior Johnson

A personal taste of Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon confirmed an ultra-smooth quality that was very pleasing to the palate. Midnight Moon, with its unique flavor is great alternative to vodka. Be sure to purchase your own bottle of NASCAR antiquity on your next visit to your local grocery story.

2011 Toyota All-Star Showdown

Moses Smith #16 Hasa Pool Products

2011 Toyota All-Star Showdown Announced

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR announced today that the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, the sport’s premier short-track racing showcase will return to the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) on Jan. 28-29.

The eighth running of the event, which brings together the top racers from across North America and has grown into the ”Daytona 500 of short-track racing,” will be highlighted by the 225-lap NASCAR K&N Pro Series all-star race.

“The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown is the premier event of our short-track calendar,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations. “From Austin Cameron’s emotional win in the very first event to last year’s dramatic debut of Sergio Pena, each successive race has continued to build the prestige of the Showdown. This all-star weekend shines the spotlight on our champions and the sport’s rising stars.”

The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown main event is broken up into three sections – two 100-lap segments preceding a 25-lap dash to the finish. Last year, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Joey Logano became just the second driver to win two Showdowns when he held off a furious challenge over the closing laps from the 17-year-old Pena, who was making his series debut for Revolution Racing/Drive for Diversity.

The race features secured starting spots for the 2010 champions of NASCAR’s developmental series and race winners of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series from the 2010 season. Eighteen-year-old Ryan Truex leads the field of drivers who have already earned spots, having recently wrapped up his second straight NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship.

Other drivers who have secured starting spots include NASCAR K&N Pro Series race winners Ty Dillon, Max Gresham, Paulie Harraka, Erik Holmes, Patrick Long, David Mayhew, Brett Moffitt, Andrew Ranger, Greg Pursley, Auggie Vidovich, and Darrell Wallace Jr., in addition to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Keith Rocco and NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 champion DJ Kennington.

The schedule also includes a 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model race and a 50-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race. The top five NASCACR state champions in attendance will have secured starting spots in the Late Model race. New to this year, the 25-car fields for each of those races will be set by a pair of heat races – 25 laps for the the Super Late Models and 20 laps for the Late Models.

Both nights of racing will air live on SPEED as part of full weekend of racing on SPEED that includes the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series’ Rolex 24 at Daytona.

“Year in and year out, the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown has provided some of the best racing action of the season,” said Bob DeFazio, Toyota Speedway at Irwindale track operator. “Last year’s sell-out crowd at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale witnessed a race they will be talking about for years, and we are honored to once again host the pinnacle of short-track racing in NASCAR. Toyota Speedway’s graduated banking and multiple racing grooves are a perfect place to showcase this tremendous pool of talent in NASCAR. This event is a perfect way to give race fans a final send-off to the 2010 racing season and whet their appetite for more exciting racing in 2011.”

The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown main event – contested in NASCAR K&N Pro Series cars – is open to any driver approved to drive on a half-mile or longer tracks in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series.

Current national series drivers such as Logano, Ricky Carmichael, Brian Ickler, Trevor Bayne, Matt Crafton, Ron Hornaday Jr. and Justin Lofton have competed in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. In addition, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. have launched their careers in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. The series is the top developmental step for drivers looking to make the jump to one of NASCAR's national series.
