Brad Keselowski Added to Snowball Derby Roster

NASCAR champion Brad Keselowski has successfully competed in a number of different series and events over his illustrious racing career, but never the Snowball Derby – the most prestigious event in super late model racing. That changes this year when Keselowski will take the wheel of the No. 6 Ford with sponsorship from long-time and significant racing supporter, Fr8Auctions. The 55th annual Snowball Derby is scheduled for November 30th – December 4th at Five Flags Speedway located in Pensacola, Florida.

The Snowball Derby is essentially an all-star race as it attracts some of the biggest names in short track racing, as well as some of my competitors from NASCAR,” said Keselowski. “This is my first time behind the wheel at the Derby. I’m really looking forward to the race and very appreciative of Fr8Auctions coming on-board with me. Fr8Auctions has supported all levels of racing, so it’s great to partner with them for this particular event and bring together NASCAR and super late model racing.”

For Keselowski, it marks his first partnership with Fr8Auctions, but not Fr8Auctions’ first partnership in motorsports.

"FR8Auctions is looking forward to growing our racing footprint while supporting grassroots events with different drivers across all levels of motorsports. Whether it's partnering with Championship Cup drivers in Crown Jewel events like the Snowball Derby or supporting the young up and coming drivers working their way through the ranks, FR8 is committed to the sport and its growth long term,” said Marcus Barela, Founder and CEO of Fr8Auctions.

"We are thrilled to continue to grow our footprint in all levels of racing by working with Brad in the Snowball Derby. This is a Crown Jewel event and we are excited to have such an accomplished driver representing us on and off the track.” "Brad is a champion and we are racing for the win,” added Matt Erickson, President of Fr8Auctions.

While a first participating in the Snowball Derby and a first with Fr8Auctions, the event will be a bit of homecoming of sorts for Keselowski where he will be driving a FURY Race Cars entry with Tony Eury Jr. serving as crew chief for the event. Keselowski and Eury Jr. partnered together in 2009 during Keselowski’s part-time schedule with Hendrick Motorsports.

“Having the opportunity to work together again Tony Jr. and Pops makes this whole program even more special,” added Keselowski. “This is going to be a lot fun to be sure, but we are all racers, so we’re headed down to Pensacola to compete for a win!”

The 55th annual Snowball Derby will be available via live pay-per-view exclusively on RacingAmerica.com. The Snowball Derby 300-lap feature race is scheduled for Sunday December 4th, 2022, at 2:00 pm ET.

Eckes Prevails in Snowball Derby Thriller

Eckes Prevails in Snowball Derby Thriller Christian Eckes Crowned Snowball Derby 2016 Champion

Eckes Prevails in Snowball Derby Thriller #snowballderby

A year before reaching its historic milestone, the 49th Snowball Derby was beset with the worst weather in event history. It forced an unprecedented two-day delay with the race, originally scheduled for a Sunday start, to wait until yesterday for the green flag.

However, for winner, sixteen-year-young Christian Eckes, a New York native and JR Motorsports prodigy, the agonizing delay produced elation.

“I can’t even believe I’m standing here right now,” Eckes said in Victory Lane. “I thought our day was over when we had that incident down the backstretch. Man, I just can’t believe this. This is the Snowball Derby and this is just crazy.”

Eckes made an inside move to pass fellow rising star, nineteen-year-old John Hunter Nemechek, exiting Turn four on the second-to-final lap Tuesday. He then won a nose-to-nose duel at the finish line to pull off a stunning victory at Five Flags Speedway.

Eckes Prevails in Snowball Derby Thriller #snowballderby

These two talented drivers switched leads four times the final two whirls around the famed, half-mile oval. Nemecheck won the 2014 Snowball Derby at age of seventeen.

“He made the crossover move pretty much one corner earlier than I did,” Nemechek said. “I should have backed off and held him to the outside and he wouldn’t have got to me. But heck of a race. I can’t thank all the fans enough for coming out on a Tuesday. This is awesome to be able to put on such a close finish for you guys. That’s how you win a race right there. He showed what he could do and rubbin is racing.”

The separation was 0.017 of a second, the closest in Snowball Derby history. The previous blink-of-eye finish was 1998 when five-time Snowball Derby winner Rich Bickle Jr. held off Gary St. Amant. Bickle is the only driver to win it five times.

Not only did adverse weather cause a two-day rain delay for the 49th running of the Snowball Derby, the track was actually under a Tornado Watch. A watch means conditions are favorable or expected but not occurring or imminent; while during a warning conditions are occurring or imminent.

The Five Flags staff met with all the drivers behind closed doors. After a “hand vote,” the resulting decision became a balancing act between the drivers, team members, fans, track personal and even media considerations.

Today’s agenda calls for the pits to be opened at noon today. The driver’s meeting is scheduled to take place at 3:00 p.m. with the pre-race festivities commencing at 4:00 p.m. The Snowball Derby’s Green Flag will finally, optimistically, drop at 5:00 p.m.

We would have like to have started the race earlier for the teams and at the same time we would have liked to start a little later for the fans in the Gulf Coast area who have to work. It was a little bit of a compromise there. Track Promoter Tim Bryant.

The forecast looks good for today’s race. Click here for AccuWeather

The big topic around the track has been the addition of a “controlled caution” procedure. Not all drivers appreciate the determination. Over the past few years, Super Late Model races in the Southeast have consisted of live pit stop races. The controlled cautions will add strategy back into the race and help lower the costs for the less-funded teams hoping to remain competitive.

The new procedure will consist of controlled pit stops, in which no car may lose a lap under caution while pitting. In addition, no driver will lose positions in regards to other cars that pitted during the controlled caution period.

William Byron Takes Pole for 49th Annual Snowball Derby

The full-time NASCAR driver, William Byron  successfully headed to his pits as the official polesitter for the 49th annual Snowball Derby on Sunday. Byron, a seven-time winner in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year, stood head and shoulders above a group of 56 other cars in short-track racing’s most exciting two laps.

“It’s a good feeling. I was just hoping we could get through ‘tech’ and celebrate,” Byron said with a smile on his face. “This was just a great job done by this team and I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend.”

Byron, a Charlotte, N.C., area driver, posted a fast lap of 16.201 seconds, which was less than a tenth off the track record that was set by Ty Majeski at last year’s Snowball Derby.

The last driver to win the Derby from the pole came in 2005 when local hero Eddie Mercer ended his long quest and finally hoisted the Tom Dawson trophy.

Although engine issues dropped him out of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) chase; Byron started the last race of the 2016 season from the pole for the second-consecutive week. He pulled away from the field for the final 10 laps and crossed the finish line 2.175 seconds ahead of his closest competitor. It will be exciting to see if his hot streak survives this Short Track challenge.

The win gave KBM its fourth consecutive and fifth all-time NCWTS owner championship. KBM is the first team in NCWTS history to win four-consecutive owner championships and has the most owner titles of any other team.

Short Track Champions and Winners Make Up Deep Snowball Field

Short Track Champions and Winners Make Up Deep Snowball Field
#SnowballDerby The cast of drivers for the 49th Annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida is as deep as ever. It’s full of youth and experience as nearly 70 drivers chase the Tom Dawson Trophy. Looking over each drivers resume we find winners, champions and short track heroes from all stretches of North America. Here is a look at the best of the best from this year.

Short Track Champions and Winners Make Up Deep Snowball Field

Series champions from all regions are well represented. From the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series, champion Derek Thorn is making a return to the Snowball Derby. Northwest Super Late Model Series Champion Garrett Evans also filed an entry, but will be unable to make the trip.

Also from the west, NASCAR K&N Pro Series West title holder Todd Gilliland will be on hand. Canadian driver Raphael Lessard who won the CARS Super Late Model title will visit Pensacola. Donnie Wilson who captured the Southern Super Series crown will again be at Five Flags looking to better his runner-up finish from 2010.

One of the hottest drivers in recent memory, Ty Majeski comes to town looking to complete his Snowball Derby magic that left him third a year go. Majeski won the New Smyrna World Series Super Late Model title at Speedweeks, the ARCA Midwest Tour title for the third year in a row and the Florida Governor’s Cup 200.

Big race winners will also flock to the Snowball Derby as well as Dick Trickle 99 winner Dan Fredrickson will return to the Derby. Red-Eye 100 winner Cole Anderson will look to bookend the season with a win after winning the season’s first race. Christian Eckes won last weeks Myrtle Beach 400 in a Late Model Stock Car and will head to Pensacola as well. All American 400 winner Bubba Pollard will look to grab his second major of the season at the Snowball Derby.

Track champions are well represented from the Five Flags season. Two-time and defending Blizzard Series champion Casey Roderick is in the field looking for his first Snowball Derby win. Also this year’s track Pro Late Model champion Bret Holmes will mix it up in the Super Late Model ranks.

Also in the field are former winners John Hunter Nemechek, Clay Rogers and two-time winner Augie Grill. All three will be in contention for another victory.

There are several other champions from other years in the mix, but all these honors just proves this is the deepest Super Late Model field out there.

The 49th Annual Snowball Derby weekend kicks off on Wednesday, November 30 with the Cat Country/WEAR TV3 Green Flag Pit Party and Qualifying Order Draw Down.

Thursday, December 1 will see the Super Late Models take to the track for the first official Snowball Derby practice. The night will be highlighted by a 30-lap race for the Butler U-Pull-It Bombers and a 50-lap event for the Dock on the Beach Sportsmen division.

The top Snowball Derby starting spots will be set on Friday, December 2 during NASH FM 102.7 Pole Night. The Faith Chapel Super Stocks and the Modifieds will each run 50-lap features.

The Pro Late Models take center stage on Saturday, December 3 for the Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100. The 50-lap Last Chance Qualifier for the Snowball Derby and a 50-lap feature for the Beef O’Brady’s Pro Truck division will also run on Saturday night.

Then on Sunday, December 4 the green flag will fly over the 49th Annual Snowball Derby. The 300-lap race will begin at 2 p.m. CT.

49th Annual Snowball Derby Live

49th Annual Snowball Derby Live Pay-Per-View Broadcast on Speed51.com

2016-derby-ppv-slider-537x330Race fans, mark this date on your calendar: December 4, 2016.  Make sure that your only plans that day are to either be at Five Flags Speedway (FL) for the 49th Annual Snowball Derby or to be on your couch watching a live signature video broadcast of the prestigious short track race on Speed51.com.

For the third consecutive year, the Snowball Derby will be available worldwide via a live, pay-per-view broadcast on Speed51.com.   Race fans unable to make it to the Pensacola, Florida area will have the opportunity to follow four days of racing action beginning Thursday and ending Sunday with a television-style broadcast of the 300-lap Super Late Model main event.

“We realize that not everyone can make it to Pensacola the first weekend of December, and the Speed51 TV broadcast provides the perfect platform for them to still enjoy the events,” said Tim Bryant, Promoter of Five Flags Speedway and the Snowball Derby.  “Any apprehensions we may have had about live coverage of the race, certainly went out the window when we heard stories from people around the country who hosted ‘Super Bowl-type’ parties for the Derby.”

The live broadcast of the 49th Annual Snowball Derby will bring fans closer to the action than ever with up to 10 camera angles during the biggest races of the weekend, an in-house broadcast team including pit reporters with more driver interviews than ever before.  The broadcast will also feature enhanced video features and graphical elements.

“We’ve been working hard on the pre-production of this for a couple of months.  This is the Super Bowl of Short Track Late Model racing; an end of the season ‘go-for-it-all’ style of race and we hope to capture some of what the event is about for those that watch our broadcast from all over the map,” said Bob Dillner, Executive Editor for Speed51.com powered by JEGS.  “There is no way to create the feel of actually being at the Snowball Derby; it’s a bucket list event, but we have a lot of new things to debut in our broadcasts of all four days.”
Speed51.com’s live broadcast of the 2016 Snowball Derby will begin on Thursday with a live two-hour broadcast of Snowball Derby and Snowflake 100 practice beginning at 2 p.m. CT.  Those who purchase Thursday’s live video ticket or a four-day video package will be able to watch a replay of that practice session on-demand after its completion.

51’s cameras will start rolling again later in the night on Thursday as the grassroots racers in the Bomber and Sportsman divisions put on a show during their features at Five Flags Speedway.
Friday’s broadcast will be highlighted by the always-intense Snowball Derby qualifying.  With nearly 70 drivers expected, only 30 of those drivers will lock into the big race. The live broadcast on Friday night will also include 50-lap features for the Super Stocks and Modifieds.

On Saturday, Speed51.com will go live at 2 p.m. CT for Snowflake 100 qualifying, as well as Snowflake and Snowball Derby last chance qualifiers.  The night will be headlined by the biggest Pro Late Model race in the country, the Snowflake 100 at 7 p.m. CT.  In addition, the 50-lap Pro Truck feature will also be broadcast live for those at home.

Sunday afternoon will feature a television-style broadcast of the 49th Annual Snowball Derby, including a two-hour pre-race show beginning at 12 p.m. CT leading up to pre-race ceremonies and the green flag.  The live broadcast will bring you behind the scenes with live pit reports, in-car communication with drivers and more.

Racing fans can purchase a four-day live video package for just $69.99.  Daily packages are available, however, the four-day video tickets offers fans a savings of $20.

If you’re unable to watch all four days of racing, an individual video ticket to watch Sunday’s 300-lap Snowball Derby is available for $29.99.  Saturday’s broadcast of the Snowflake 100 and more can be purchased for $24.99.

A video ticket to watch the always-intense Snowball Derby qualifying and feature races on Friday is $19.99, while Thursday’s broadcast of practice and features can be purchased for $14.99.

CT.
