K&N Pro Series West Stat Advance: Portland
AnalyzingThe NAPA Auto Parts Salute To The Troops 125

By Kevin W. Green, NASCAR

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West visits Portland (Ore.) International Raceway on Sunday, Aug. 26. Below is a statistical look at the recent performance of the series and selected drivers at Portland, as well as some other statistical trends:

Portland Race Setup

  • This event marks the fourth and final road course event on the 2012 schedule for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. There were three different winners in the first three road races – with Greg Pursley winning in Tooele, Utah; Michael Self winning in Brainerd, Minn.; and David Gilliland winning in Sonoma, Calif.
  • Defending champion Greg Pursley leads Dylan Kwasniewski by seven points in the championship standings, with 11 events complete of a 15-race schedule.
  • Jim Inglebright, who won with a last-lap charge in 2009, is the only previous Portland winner entered in this event.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series West At Portland

  • Portland International Raceway has hosted four NASCAR K&N Pro Series West races. The series initially visited the road course in 1986 and has returned the past three years.
  • PIR is located on the former site of Vanport, Ore., just south of the Columbia River and about a mile west of Interstate 5. Vanport was wiped out when a dike on the river broke and flooded the city in 1948. The first races took place on the old city streets in 1961. The motorsports facility, which has received many renovations over the years, now includes a road course, drag strip and motocross track.
  • The four series races at Portland International Raceway resulted in four different winners – Hershel McGriff (1986), Jim Inglebright (2009), Patrick Long (2010) and Luis Martinez Jr. (2011).
  • Three drivers have qualified on the pole at Portland. David Mayhew is the only multiple winner, claiming the honor in 2009 and 2010. Derrike Cope set the mark in 1986 and Martinez won the pole in 2011.
  • With two top-five finishes each, Martinez and Eric Holmes are the only drivers with multiple top fives.
  • Holmes leads the list of drivers with top-10 finishes at Portland, with three.
  • Greg Pursley has led the most laps in series action at PIR, running out front for 59 laps.
  • Hershel McGriff is the only driver to compete in all four series events at Portland.
  •  Las year marked the first time the Portland event was won by the pole winner. On two previous occasions, the winner started fifth on the grid.
  • In addition to competing at the Portland road course, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West had a long history of racing between 1956 and 2000 at the historic half-mile oval of Portland Speedway before it was eventually shuttered.

STOCKTON, Calif. – Dylan Kwasniewski was able to pull away on a green-white-checkered finish from Eric Holmes to win the Pick-N-Pull 150 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race Saturday at Stockton 99 Speedway.

Kwasniewski, who picked up his first win of the season and third of his career, started from the pole and led every lap in the first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at the quarter-mile track since 2006. It was also the sixth time in nine NASCAR K&N Pro Series West races at Stockton since 2002 that a race was extended past its advertised distance.

“It was definitely tough,” said Kwasniewski, who after gaining the lead on the initial start had to fend off challenges in seven restarts during the event. “The Rockstar Energy Ford was great. Everybody at Gene Price Motorsports did a perfect job of putting this car together.”

Kwasniewski was side-by-side with his Gene Price Motorsports teammate, Greg Pursley, for the start and most of the restarts; but three-time series champion Eric Holmes had battled his way to second when the final caution flew. He challenged for the lead, but Kwasniewski once again was able to gain the position and lead the field to the checkered flag.

“Eric Holmes had a chance to take me out and drive me rough, but he’s a great driver and I’m glad he did it respectively,” said the 16-year-old second-year driver from Las Vegas. “It was a great race. It was just perfect. I had a blast.”
Kwasniewski’s No. 03 Rockstar/Royal Purple Ford crossed the finish line with a margin of victory of .490 seconds.
Holmes held on for second, with David Mayhew taking third. Pursley, who held second through Lap 145, ended up fourth, with Jason Fensler fifth. Finishing sixth was Jonathon Gomez, with Derek Thorn seventh and Austin Dyne eighth. Jessica Brunelli and Ronnie Jay completed the top 10.

With his victory, Kwasniewski locked up a spot in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series race at the UNOH Battle At The Beach at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway next February during Speedweeks.
Kwasniewski also took over the lead in the championship standings. He leads with 173 points over Mayhew with 167. Pursley is third with 162 points, followed by Holmes with 160 and Thorn with 156. Completing the top 10 are Cameron Hayley at 126, Daryl Harr at 119, Jonathon Gomez at 118 and Austin Dyne and Michael Self tied with 116 each.

Kwasniewski is following up a record-setting rookie year in the series last season in which he set the mark as the youngest race winner and youngest pole winner. He capped off 2011 by becoming the youngest driver to win the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award.

With his win at Stockton, he became the fourth different winner in four races this season. And he became the fourth driver to win from the pole this year. The last one to lead wire-to-wire, however, was Mayhew in the season opener.

The Pick-N-Pull 150 will air on SPEED on May 17 at 3 p.m. ET.

The next event on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West schedule is the Graham Tire 150 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combination race at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa on May 19.

Auto Club Speedway - A Tad Disappointing

Nationwide Green Flag
Nationwide Green Flag

Well, we went to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Nationwide races at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. Am I glad that we went – definitely yes; however, I was disappointed just a bit.

LunchBut before I get to that, the Camping World Infield area, designated for RV weekend camping, is enjoyable. The campground supplies a great atmosphere, with children and adults playing to their heart’s delight amid the roar of Sprint Car activity on track. My husband Paul and I enjoyed our time visiting with friends and family.

However, when we went to the stands to watch the race, track security stopped us for carrying an ominous backpack. Mind you this is the same backpack that we use when we fly to Moses’ NASCAR Camping World Series West races. We never have a problem getting on the plane with it. This is also the same backpack with which we walked into the track infield. I was under the false impression that track security just wanted to search the backpack for contraband. That was not the case.

For security reasons, that backpack was forbidden to enter the grandstands. We would have to purchase a “see through” backpack. Conveniently, they were for sale inside. We opted to hike the mile back to drop off the offending backpack in the trunk of our car.

All this nonsense would have been acceptable, if we did not watch the races amongst fellow fans sporting huge camera bags and lunch coolers. These receptacles were not “see through,” so how could the “no backpack” rule make anyone safer. It did not make sense to me and frankly made me furious.

Me and my DHNevertheless, anytime I get to see a NASCAR race, I am happy. However, the racing at the Auto Club Speedway turned out to be a tad lackluster. One cannot get around the fact that the fans only get a decent view of a third of the track. Secondly, the cars (or trucks) spread out so quickly that there really isn’t any actual racing happening on the track.

The action on pit lane was much more animated and exciting. The #99 BestWestern Toyota, driven by Michael Waltrip was actually spun on pit row by a competitor, serviced by his pit crew while facing backwards, and then Michael spun himself around to exit his stall to return to the track. The action brought one of the few roars from the crowd.

Kyle Busch's PitNow I know that Kyle Busch became the first driver to win twice in the same day on two of NASCAR’s top-three circuits. That should generate some enthusiasm on its own merit. Conversely, as a fan, it was rather unexciting to watch Busch pull away from the pack seconds after the green flag dropped. There was never a battle for the lead. Frankly, I did not watch Busch’s #51 truck or #18 Nationwide car at all during either race.

In the Camping World Truck Series, Gabi DiCarlo, in her Great Clips Toyota, became the twelfth female to start a truck series event. Her resume includes driving in the ARCA/REMAX Series for the past two seasons. She completed the race without incident. After qualifying twenty-third, Gabi finished just a lap down in nineteenth position. Fellow Camping World Series West Driver Brett Thompson, driving his family owned Rich Thompson Trucking Inc. Dodge managed a twenty-first place finish. DiCarlo and Thompson battled each other for much of the event for some interesting mid-pack racing.

Michael McDowell again proved that he does add energy to a race. After qualifying an outstanding third behind cup regulars Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch, his car had problems soon after the Nationwide race began. Then in lap fifty-two, his #47 Tom's Snacks Toyota race car burst into flames after the engine blew up and spread debris all over the track. Luckily Michael managed to drive to the bottom of the track. He exited his vehicle quickly and without injury, but for a very bad points day.

Today’s Sprint Cup race could unearth history if Kyle Busch emerges the victor to become the first driver to win all three NASCAR races in the same weekend. However, my husband has to work, so my dangerous backpack and I will have to watch it all unfold on the television.
