Unoh Battle At The Beach
#NASCAR Event Information

FAST FACTS

The Race: The UNOH Battle At The Beach is the second race of the 2014 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship season. It is the second of 14 oval track events and 16 races overall on the schedule. This is the series’ first championship race at the Florida track after being part of a non-points event a year ago.

The Procedure: The starting field is 26 cars, including provisionals. The first 22 cars will qualify through two-lap time trials while the remaining four starting spots will be awarded through the provisional process. The race will be 150 laps covering 55.5 miles without a halfway break.

The Track: The .37-mile short-track oval is situated on the backstretch of the 2.5-mile tri-oval at Daytona International Speedway. This newest addition to the menu at “The World Center of Racing” was made possible following the 2010 resurfacing project. The track is virtually flat and has a paperclip-like shape. The track has been altered slightly from its .4-mile configuration a year ago. The changes will result in a different racing line and entrance angle to the turns.

The Records: The one-lap qualifying record for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will be established in this event. Last season’s non-championship event utilized heat races to set the starting lineup. The official race record also will be set this year. The 150-lap K&N Pro Series event last February took 1 hour, 22 minutes, 15 seconds for an average speed of 45.503 mph.

Last year’s 2013 UNOH Battle At The Beach may have been the most talked about short-track event of the season. There was plenty of action and drama as Daytona International Speedway hosted the inaugural event on its backstretch.

The UNOH Battle At The Beach is back at “The World Center of Racing” on Tuesday, Feb. 18 and again will air live on television and radio. FOX Sports 2 will broadcast live beginning at 7 p.m. ET. Motor Racing Network (MRN) will go on the air at 6:45 p.m. with its pre-show, and the broadcast will be streamed live at MRN.com and simulcast by SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Ch. 90.

The evening kicks off with the special non-points combination event for the NASCAR Whelen Modified and Whelen Southern Modified Tours. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East points race follows at approximately 8:45 p.m. Both races will be 150 laps on the .37-mile oval.

Last year, popular veteran Steve Park used a little “chrome horn” to pass nine-time champion Mike Stefanik for the modified victory, while Cameron Hayley picked up his first NASCAR win in the K&N Pro Series race.

In addition to the live broadcast, the Whelen Modified race re-airs the same day, at 11 p.m., on FOX Sports 1. The K&N Pro Series East race re-airs on FOX Sports 1 on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m., following live NASCAR Sprint Cup practice from Daytona (4-5:30 p.m.) and leading into live NASCAR Sprint Cup practice beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season starts the season Sunday, Feb. 16 at New Smyrna (Fla.) Speedway. FOX Sports 1 airs the race in a one-hour format on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m., leading into Daytona 500 Final Practice at 10 a.m.

Hayley, Ben Rhodes and Gray Gaulding were all involved in a wild scramble off Turn 4 of the final lap of the 2013 UNOH Battle At The Beach, with Hayley emerging with the K&N Pro Series victory. All three will be back as the race will be the second championship East points event of the season.

The field also includes Daniel Suàrez, who closed last season with six top three finishes in the last eight races, leading Rev Racing’s four-car team in its pursuit of its second title in three years; Cole Custer, who became the youngest race winner in series history last year; Kenzie Ruston, the highest finishing female in series history; and two-time defending NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Lee Pulliam, who is making his move up the NASCAR ladder.

Young star power will be in abundance in the Modified Tour race, led by Ryan Preece, who became the youngest champion in NASCAR Whelen Modified history last season. Rising stock car star Kyle Benjamin will jump in the No. 7NY Modified piloted last year at Daytona by Kyle Larson. They’ll be joined by young talent such as Tommy Barrett Jr., Timmy Solomito and Jimmy Zacharias.

In addition, past NASCAR modified champions Doug Coby, Donny Lia, Burt Myers and Ron Silk are all entered in the race.'

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Eight NASCAR champions head a list of drivers that have earned locked-in spots in the field fields at the inaugural UNOH Battle At The Beach on Feb. 18-19 at Daytona International Speedway.

The UNOH Battle At The Beach features two nights of racing with NASCAR K&N Pro Series, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tours and the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series on the .4-mile oval on the backstretch.

Locked-In spots go to:

  • 2012 race winners and champions from K&N Pro Series and Whelen Modified tours, earn spots in their respective races

  • Top-10 finishers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I national standings earn starting spots in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race.

  •  In addition, the 2012 overall champions from the Canadian Tire Series and Euro Racecar Series will also receive secured starting positions for the event and can choose which one of the three races they wish to compete.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion Kyle Larson headlines the 13 NASCAR K&N Pro Series drivers that secured spots by virtue of winning races.

The 20-year-old Larson from Elk Grove, Calif., won his first NASCAR touring championship driving the No. 6 Toyota Racing Development Toyota for Rev Racing and NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Initiative.
Larson, who edged Corey LaJoie for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East title by 14 points, earned his spot in the feature field through his victory at Gresham Motorsports Park in Gresham, Ga. He also won the series’ Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors.

Other notable NASCAR K&N Pro Series drivers “locked-in” include 17-year-old Dylan Kwasniewski, the youngest K&N Pro Series West Champion in history; Chase Elliott, son of two-time Daytona 500 champion Bill Elliott; and Joe Gibbs Racing developmental driver Darrell Wallace Jr.
Connecticut’s Doug Coby and North Carolina’s George Brunnhoelzl III head the list of 13 drivers locked into the NASCAR Whelen Modified race. Coby won four races in claiming his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship, while Brunnhoelzl had six wins en route to his third NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour title.

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Lee Pulliam of Semora, N.C., tops the list for the Late Model race. Pulliam earned the national championship with 22 wins, 30 top fives and 32 top 10s in 36 starts.

NASCAR international series champions locked in are D.J. Kennington from the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, Spain’s Ander Vilarino from the Euro-Racecar NASCAR Touring Series, and Mexico’s Jorge Goeters of the NASCAR Toyota Series.

Kennington from St. Thomas, Ontario won his second Canadian Tire Series championship while Vilarino is the inaugural Euro-Racecar Series champion. Goeters won his second Mexican title, but first under a NASCAR banner.

Current, or past, full-time national series drivers not currently competing in the touring or regional series are ineligible to compete in the UNOH Battle At The Beach.
