AUTOParkit's Lawless Alan Stays on Top at Irwindale Raceway

Freshman Year, Sophomore Season, 1st Championship

Lawless Alan, driver of the AUTOParkit™ number twenty-five car and a Freshman at the University of Alabama, in only his second professional season won the 2018 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Championship at Irwindale Speedway Saturday September 22nd by finishing on the podium for his 22nd time this year.

Lawless had to battle the entire race, finishing second, in order to maintain the top points position and secure the championship. Over the entire season, Lawless was on the podium 22 times including 7 first place finishes. The last two months of the season were particularly challenging as he had to commute from Tuscaloosa where he attends the University of Alabama and is studying mechanical engineering. Emerging from the car in Victory Circle right after winning the Championship he broke into a wide grin and yelled, "Roll Tide!".

There were plenty of high fives and champagne on a warm California night for the entire Dasher Lawless Racing Team which is sponsored by AUTOParkit.

Mike Dunkleberger, Crew Chief of the number twenty-five car said, "We had the points lead coming into tonight, but knew we needed to run upfront if we wanted to control the championship. This is something the entire team has worked for these past two years. Lawless was diggin' the entire race and never let up. And on that last restart, even though he was in a comfortable points lead, he was going for the win, holy cow he can drive. He was down past the white line going into two trying to pass for the lead. But P2 put us on the podium again and we locked up the championship. I just can't say enough about this team and this young kid, wow, what a talent he is."

Rest In Peace Ronald Casey

NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Sportsman Modified Racer

Sixty-one-year old Ronald Casey was racing lap nine of a scheduled thirty-five lap race at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Regrettably, his racecar suddenly veered off course through the infield at a high rate of speed. It traveled through the infield grass before making a hard impact with a retaining wall in Turn 2 and coming to rest.

"He came off turn four and you can follow the tracks through the infield. He went between the light poles and impacted the wall over in turn two," said Justin St. Louis, Devils Bowls' Media Director. "You felt helpless because everybody saw it and there was nothing you could do... Mike Bruno, the race director, actually called red flag before the impact because he knew what was coming."

Mr. Casey’s official cause of death has not yet been determined, though it is believed to have been due to a medical problem just prior to the accident. No other people or vehicles were involved in the incident. Rest In Peace Ronald Casey.

Ron Casey was the epitome of the old-school, hard-working Vermonter, and was an impeccable ambassador for grassroots auto racing. His warm, friendly demeanor was a welcome addition to every track at which he competed during his long career. Racing on a shoestring budget, his priority was fun over success and his passion, enthusiasm, and dedication for the sport were obvious. Mr. Casey was the first driver to register to compete when dirt track racing returned to Devil’s Bowl Speedway in September 2014, he was the first driver to arrive at the track’s official car show in Downtown Rutland on a rainy 35-degree morning in May 2016, and he was the first driver in line to enter the pit area on the night that he passed away – just as he was at virtually every race. Drivers will be back at the Speedway on Saturday and Sunday for more racing and they will be holding a moment of silence for Casey before the races.

NASCAR’s top drivers throughout its regional touring and weekly series will be in the spotlight this week in Charlotte, N.C., with a bevy of activities leading up to the awards ceremonies Friday and Saturday night. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards took place Friday, Dec. 13. NASCAR’s touring series champions will be recognized at the traditional NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards. Set for Saturday, Dec. 14.
