Chastain Spoils Playoff Show at Kansas, Posts First Cup Series Win of the Season

Chastain Spoils Playoff Show at Kansas - #NASCAR

Ross Chastain’s No 1. Trackhouse Chevrolet came to life in the second half of Sunday‘s Hollywood Casino 400 and beat William Byron‘s Chevrolet to the finish line in a hotly contested Round of 12 opener in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

Chastain grabbed the lead from Martin Truex Jr. moments after the final restart on Lap 248 at Kansas Speedway and held off a charging Byron by 0.388 seconds to thwart the playoff driver‘s bid for automatic advancement into the Round of 8.

Having failed to qualify for the postseason this year, Chastain reveled in his first victory of the season, his first at Kansas and the fifth of his career.

“For us on this 1 team, it’s what Cup racing is all about,” said Chastain, who led 52 laps. “It’s what (team co-owner) Justin Marks bought into Trackhouse with Pitbull, bought into NASCAR with Trackhouse to do stuff like this — to disrupt.

“Look, there’s been times this year where we couldn’t have disrupted the minnow pond outside of Darlington, let alone a Cup race. It’s hard. It’s really tough. To come and do this, there are times where I didn’t think after practicing and qualifying we had what it took. I thought we have been way stronger here in the past. It didn’t feel great all day, but our Kubota Chevy, it was better as the rubber went down, and the adjustments were great.”

Aric Almirola Plays Spoiler, Wins Xfinity Playoffs Opener

Aric Almirola Plays Spoiler - #NASCAR

Aric Almirola surged to victory in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs opener at Kansas Speedway, bypassing Cole Custer in the 197th of 200 laps and denying the circuit’s postseason hopefuls early advancement.

"For me, to be able to scratch the itch of driving race cars and competing at a high level, I absolutely love this," Almirola said. "I did not want to walk away from exactly what I did today. That adrenaline rush of what I did today is irreplaceable. You can not do that anywhere else."

Almirola’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota led 16 of the 200 laps in the Kansas Lottery 300. His second win of the season in a part-time role was his first at the 1.5-mile Kansas City track and the sixth of his Xfinity Series career.

"It's exactly what I set out to do when Coach (Gibbs) called me. I really didn't have a plan. I was retiring and didn't know what was next," Almirola said. "Coach called, I met with him, and we talked a lot about what this could look like, and it has been so gratifying. I truly believe it was an answered prayer for me, (wife) Janice and our family."

Corey Heim Completes Season Sweep at Kansas in NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Elimination Race

Corey Heim Completes Season Sweep at Kansas - #NASCAR

Corey Heim won Friday night’s Kubota Tractor 200 in the fastest truck, but he needed help from fellow Playoff driver Ty Majeski to secure the victory in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Round of 10 elimination race at Kansas Speedway.

Majeski ran out of fuel approaching the white flag while leading, allowing Heim to surge past in his No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota and claim his sixth victory of the season in a race that saw reigning series champion Ben Rhodes and Playoff rookie Daniel Dye eliminated from title contention.

“We were the best truck all night-it’s my favorite track, I love coming here,” said Heim, who won at the 1.5-mile speedway in the spring. “I look forward to this. I had a smile on my face all week coming to this place.

“I just thought we could sweep the year here. It’s an awesome place to come. I certainly thought we had it lost there to the 98 (Majeski), almost making it on fuel, but it just shows my team made the right call.”

The victory was Heim’s second at Kansas and the 11th of his career. He led a race-high 64 laps in an event that featured 10 lead changes among three drivers.

Tanner Gray Holds on in Thrilling Finish to Win Reese’s 150 at Kansas Speedway

Tanner Gray Holds on in Thrilling Finish - #ARCA

Although the ARCA stat sheet will show Tanner Gray dominated Friday’s Reese’s 150 at Kansas Speedway, his journey to the checkered flag was anything but smooth.

Contact with Amber Balcaen on the final restart of the day left Gray with a slow leak in his left rear tire, but he still had enough car and tire to hold off Connor Zilisch, Corey Day and Andy Jankowiak in the final laps. Gray’s resolve, and his tire, lasted until the checkered flag, resulting in his second ARCA Menards Series victory of 2024.

One more lap and Gray would have been denied the victory because his left rear tire went flat just as he reached Turn 1 on the cooldown lap. He was fortunate the tire lasted to the finish so that he could celebrate putting together a complete race behind the wheel of Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Toyota.

“It’s obviously gratifying when you can come here and close these things out,” Gray said. “We’ve been in a position to win most of them this year, but I haven’t done a good a very good job on the restarts at the end. It’s been a lot of fun racing with [Joe Gibbs Racing] this year and hopefully we can do this some more in the future.”

Trevor Huddleston topped the ARCA Menards Series West portion of the 51st Harvest Classic at Madera Speedway on Saturday night.

Huddleston won the West Coast Stock Car / Motorsports Hall of Fame 150 in a door-banging duel with 2023 ARCA Menards Series West champion Sean Hingorani.

Huddleston proposed to his longtime girlfriend Nastasia Dodd in victory lane as well at the speedway where they first met.

“What a race! This car…absolutely epic! Race Car Factory, High Point Racing, everybody who made this possible - I can’t thank them enough. Getting these wins isn’t easy,” Huddleston said.

Kyle Larson Streaks to Southern 500 Win in NASCAR Playoffs Opener

Kyle Larson Streaks to Southern 500 Win in NASCAR Playoffs Opener

The 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion held off a desperate charge from fellow playoff driver Tyler Reddick at sold-out Darlington Raceway to claim victory in Sunday night‘s Cook Out Southern 500 and earn an automatic berth in the Round of 12.

Larson entered the playoff opener with an undistinguished average finish of 17.5 in his previous six races, but he weathered a transmission momentary stuck in neutral and a disconcerting brush with the wall to register his third victory of the season, the 22nd of his career and his first at the famed ‘Lady in Black.’

“Yeah, finally from start to finish,” Larson said of his ability to put together a complete race. “Eighteenth to third in the first stage, I didn’t think that was possible. Our race car was really good when the sun was out. Just had to work on it.

“I messed up once and it got hung in neutral, and I slid and hit the wall, and I think bent the toe link a little bit, so it was kind of a struggle from there. Definitely had to fight it more than I was earlier, but we kept our heads in the game. That was really important. This race is all about keeping your head in it…

“What a great way to start the playoffs, and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Denny Hamlin wins Xfinity Series Race

Denny Hamlin resumed his NASCAR Xfinity Series mastery of Darlington Raceway on Saturday, winning the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help a Hero 200 to raise his victory total at the track to six in the series.

Hamlin passed series leader Austin Hill after a Lap 147 restart that pushed the race one circuit into overtime. Parker Kligerman‘s consequential spin off Sam Mayer‘s bumper on Lap 141 brought out the seventh caution of the race and set up the final two-lap shootout.

“I really needed some long runs,” said Hamlin, who led 14 laps and didn‘t make his move until the final stage. “But I didn‘t really want to show everything that we had ’til the very end of the race there."

“We really did a good job of maintaining everything that we had.”

It doesn’t matter the style of race track, Jesse Love keeps finding ways to win ARCA Menards Series races.

The triumph, his ninth of the ARCA Menards Series season and 11th of his career, came in dominant fashion.

Ross Chastain Converts Last-Lap Pass, Wins Talladega Thriller

One lap. That’s all it took for Ross Chastain to drop a watermelon and raise a trophy in celebration. The 29-year-old Floridian led only the last — typically frantic — lap in the GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday to take his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory.

Chastain was running third behind Erik Jones and Kyle Larson with one lap remaining. Larson pulled out of line to the outside, poised to make a pass for the lead. But Jones pulled in front of Larson to block the momentum while Chastain kept his No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet steady below them maintaining pace, ultimately pulling away to the win as the other two cars lost momentum battling each other.

“Holy cow, we didn’t do anything,’’ Chastain yelled on his team radio after taking the checkered flag by a mere 0.105 seconds. “We just stayed down there.’’

Noah Gragson Holds Off Jeffrey Earnhardt, Wins in Talladega Overtime

It was an Earnhardt Saturday in Earnhardt country.

Grabbing the lead on a restart in the third overtime, Noah Gragson  — driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s JR Motorsports — won the Ag-Pro 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series at Talladega Superspeedway.

Gragson beat Jeffrey Earnhardt, grandson of seven-time NASCAR Cup champion Dale Earnhardt, who was driving a black No. 3 Chevrolet in a special appearance for Richard Childress Racing, which fielded Dale Sr.’s car during his heyday.

“This team at JR Motorsports, they never quit,” Gragson said. “We’ve had a kind of a rough last month, just not getting the finishes that we wanted … I couldn’t make moves on the top there very much at the beginning of the race, so I just kept running the bottom — running the bottom — and we‘d get shuffled back and keep moving back up.

“I‘m living the dream here — I‘m just so thankful to get this opportunity,” said Earnhardt, whose crew chief, FOX Sports broadcaster Larry McReynolds, was serving his first stint on a pit box since 2000. “Thanks to RCR for building this amazing race car. We were fast all weekend long. “We just fell a little short there, but congrats to Noah. He‘s good at plate races.”

Nick Sanchez Slips Through to Steal Victory at Talladega for Second ARCA Menards Series Win

When Nick Sanchez got shuffled out of the lead pack with 11 laps to go in Saturday’s General Tire 200, it appeared his shot at winning at Talladega Superspeedway was over.

Two laps later, Sanchez made a daring, three-wide move to take the race lead moments before a caution flag waved to end the race early, allowing him to claim his second ARCA Menards Series victory dating back to last year and first of the 2022 season.

The ARCA Menards Series race at Talladega ended nine laps early so Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race could start on time. Prior to a restart with 13 laps left, teams were informed that the next flag – checkered or caution – would end the race.

“They told me the last caution was going to end it, so I was driving pretty aggressive just trying to get to the front before someone wrecked,” Sanchez said.

“It was kind of every man for himself right there,” Sanchez said. “Me and my Max Siegel No. 2 did great. Thank you Max Siegel, everyone from NASCAR Drive for Diversity and Team Chevy.”

Landen Lewis Leans on Mentor Ron Hornaday Jr.’s Advice, Wins West Series Debut at Kern County

Less than a year after winning in just his second ARCA Menards Series appearance at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in Illinois, Lewis managed to take home a checkered flag in his ARCA Menards Series West debut Saturday evening in the Salute to the Oil Industry NAPA Auto Parts 150 at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, California.

Although Kern County is more than 2,500 miles away from his hometown of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, Lewis quickly took a liking to the half-mile facility during the weekend and is eager to make more trips to the West Coast following his victory.

“I’m kind of speechless at the moment,” Lewis said in Victory Lane. “This place is pretty freaking awesome, and I’m definitely going to be making a trip back while also running on the West tour some more.”

Darlington NASCAR Weekend Recap

Winners: Martin Truex Jr. (Cup); Justin Allgaier (Xfinity); Sheldon Creed (Truck); Sammy Smith (ARCA)

Martin Truex Jr. Sweeps Darlington to Win Third 2021 Cup Series Race

Martin Truex Jr. Sweeps Darlington to Win Third 2021 Cup Series Race

In the final stage of Sunday’s Goodyear 400, Kyle Larson turned a Martin Truex Jr. cakewalk into a study in suspense, but Larson couldn’t keep Truex out of Victory Lane in the 12th NASCAR Cup Series race of the season.

Truex swept the first two stages and led 248 laps to win his third event of the season and remain the only multiple winner in the series this year.

But after the final sequence of pit stops, Larson — who gained time by pitting one lap earlier than Truex — closed the leader’s advantage to .170 seconds on Lap 266 of 293 as the drivers worked stubborn lapped traffic.

Larson stayed within a second of Truex until the final few laps, when Truex finally pulled away to win by 2.571 seconds. No previous stage winner had ever gone on to claim victory at Darlington.

“We just had a good balance,” said Truex, who committed to run the top of the track throughout the race. “The car would do what I wanted it to do. I just had to manage those long runs. It was really loose that last run. I was nervous when the 5 (Larson) was catching us. We got mired in some traffic there, and that’s always tough …

“What an awesome team we have. Hopefully, we can keep this rolling.”

Justin Allgaier Wins Xfinity Race in Overtime

Justin Allgaier Wins Xfinity Race in Overtime

In a dramatic two-lap overtime shootout, Justin Allgaier squeezed past JR Motorsports teammate Josh Berry and held on to win Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Steakhouse Elite 200 at Darlington Raceway.

Allgaier chose the outside lane for the final restart and had to fend off Berry, who edged ahead entering Turn 1. But Allgaier shot the gap to the outside off Turn 2 and pulled away to win by .422 seconds.

Allgaier had wrestled the lead from Berry from the bottom lane on the previous restart on Lap 138 and appeared a likely winner before Ryan Vargas’ spin on Lap 143 forced the final restart and sent the race to overtime.

“Our car wasn’t as good as we wanted all day, but the guys down in the pits, they just kept fighting,” said Allgaier, who added his first Darlington win to his maiden win this season at Atlanta Motor Speedway. “To check off Atlanta and Darlington, I couldn’t be more appreciative of this race team. … We’re going to celebrate this one for a while.”

The victory was the 16th of Allgaier’s career.

Creed Survives Late Darlington Dust-Ups To Win Camping World Truck Series Race

Creed Survives Late Darlington Dust-Ups To Win Camping World Truck Series Race

After a 17-truck wreck effectively ended Kyle Busch Motorsports’ stranglehold on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Sheldon Creed outdueled Ben Rhodes on the final two restarts to win Friday night’s LiftKits4Less.com 200 at Darlington Raceway.

Driving a No. 2 GMS Racing Chevrolet whose paint scheme was an homage to the late Jason Leffler, Creed took the lead from runner-up Rhodes in a side-by-side battle after a restart on Lap 140.

After Danny Bohn’s spin brought out the 11th caution of the race on Lap 142, Creed prevailed once again on a Lap 146 restart when Rhodes got loose, slipped and lost ground. Fittingly, the race ended under yellow for Hailie Deegan’s final-lap spin on the frontstretch. That caution was the 12th of the race, for a total of 66 of the 147 laps.

Creed, the defending series champion, collected a $50,000 bonus for winning the first Triple Truck Challenge Presented by Womply event of the season.

“It feels great,” Creed said after a celebratory burnout on the frontstretch. “Didn’t have the best truck there, for sure. … Firing off, I was really tight. Then I was wrecking loose there, just doing everything I could.

Sammy Smith Battles Back From Early Penalty

Sammy Smith Battles Back From Early Penalty

For a few laps Saturday night, after Sammy Smith had been black flagged for crossing the start line before the leader when the Crosley Record Pressing 200 presented by T-Mobile at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway took the green flag, it seemed the ARCA Menards Series East points leader would be in for a rough race.

Yet Smith, who went a lap down when he was issued a pass-through penalty, quickly earned his lap back by passing the leader in a show of race-winning speed.

Sure enough, 190 laps later, the No. 18 Engine Ice Toyota was in Victory Lane for the second consecutive time in the ARCA Menards Series East.

“I guess I jumped the start,” said Smith. “I felt like we had a good enough car to come back through the field. We got our lap back, then came through the field. I can’t thank the Engine Ice guys enough; the whole Joe Gibbs Racing team. They brought me a super fast car.”zzz

2021 ARCA Menards Series West at Phoenix

2021 ARCA Menards Series West at Phoenix

Detailed Race Review

By Nascarvd Nascarvédé

"Not too bad for the West drivers!"

March 12, on a cold Friday night race on the Phoenix Raceway at Avondale, AZ, Ty Gibbs won the General Tire 150, a combination race between the national ARCA Menards Series and the regional ARCA Menards Series West.

An eventful race with accidents, aggressive overtaking and the little personal touch offered by Mother Nature!

Following the cancellation of the qualifying session due to the rain, per ARCA rule books the result of the practice was used to establish the starting grid. Ty Gibbs (Joe Gibbs Racing) securing the “pole” ahead of Daytona race winner Corey Heim. Zane Smith is the best representative of the West Series in 8th position. There are a total of 14 drivers flying the "West Series" flag out of the 30 participants in the race. I suggest that you analyze the race of our friends in the West Series driver by driver, taking into account their finish position.

-5th = Derek Kraus (# 19)

I invite you to read the article dedicated to him and available on my Facebook page (Click Here).

-6th  Jesse Love

6th - Jesse Love - ARCA Menards West Series

The 2020 champion lives up to his status as champion and favorite to his own succession by being the best representative of the drivers who will make the full season in the West Series this year. After a tire puncture early, he continuously held a position in the top 10 and managed to resist Drew Dollar, who had one of the 3 fastest cars in the race, on the last restart to finish in 6th position. He's virtually the leader of the West Series championship as the drivers preceding him in the standings will not make the full season.

-8th Todd Souza

-8th Todd Souza - ARCA Menards West Series

10th during the practice, he maintained himself in this position easily until contact with the wall at the exit of turn 2. Benefiting from the free pass during the 5th yellow flag, he patiently climbed back into the peloton to join the top10 again around the 90th lap. The strategy even allows him to be in second position during the restart on the 134th lap. Unfortunately, he made his tires spin a little too much and lost many positions. But the Ford is fast and especially Todd is very consistent lap after lap. This allows him to obtain an excellent 8th position.

-10th Trevor Huddleston

A real rescue! Because Trevor had a fast car but he suffered a problem early in the race causing him to lose 2 laps on the leaders. Already compromising his chances in the championship against Jesse Love? You would have thought so because while Jesse was riding "quietly" in the top 10, Trevor had to fight to move up the rankings. He will never be able to benefit from the free pass and will thank the Lord for the misfortunes of his opponents. This allows him to save a top10 and to be only 4 points behind in the championship against Jesse.

-11th Paul Pedroncelli, Jr.

-11th Paul Pedroncelli, Jr. - ARCA Menards West Series

We were surprised to see him on the entry list and he almost did the feat of getting a top10. As in Sonoma during his last race in West in 2019, he finished at the door of the top10 and this in the greatest discretion! The TV did not find it "useful" to offer him screen time when he well deserved it! The presence of Ty Joiner as crew chief has shown its effectiveness.

-12th Cole Moore

The 2nd full time BMR team rider lacked performance compared to his teammates Derek Kraus and Jesse Love. He was new to the track, but he was never really able to aim for a top10. But let's give it time to find its bearings.

-15th Dean Thompson

-15th Dean Thompson - ARCA Menards West Series

Quite simply, lack of speed. But a studious race and big points in the optics of the title of best rookie against Jake Drew.

-16th Joey Iest

-16th Joey Iest - ARCA Menards West Series

Definitely there is a curse hanging over Joey in the West Series. He shows once again that he's fast but a spin late in the race puts definitively an end to his hopes for a good result. While in the East Series he's 100% of the time in the top5, he still hasn't achieved a top 10 in West in 5 races. Incomprehensible. A real mystery.

-17th Tony Toste

-17th Tony Toste - ARCA Menards West Series

A little rusty? Let's be honest, as much as I love PP1M, there is one thing that didn't work here in Phoenix because the #77 was one of the slowest cars on the track if you don't factor in the Fast Track Racing turtles...

-18th Jake Drew

A good start to the race but the second half was more complicated. A good learning session for the Bruncati Racing rookie.

-22th Bridget Burgess

-22th Bridget Burgess - ARCA Menards West Series

The only girl under the checkered flag. The other two haven't even completed the first lap. Unfortunately the #88 Chevrolet was delayed too long due to a technical problem. Once back on track, it was only for fun and to get information that will be useful for the next races.

-23th Takuma Koga - ARCA Menards West Series

We'll have to be patient because the next West Series race will take place on the Sonoma road track on June 5…! An eternity ...
