Why Larson will Win the 2024 NASCAR Cup Title

It was an emotional return to victory lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Considering Kyle Larson’s stature among racing’s elite, maybe the premise here is inaccurate.

After all, there may be a more concise list of reasons Larson won’t win a second NASCAR Cup Series championship than the litany of data in support of his chances over the next 10 races.

It’s an index of enough bullet points to make Hammurabi blush.

But that’s not the name of this game. We’re here to identify the factor likely to weigh heaviest in a potential run to the big trophy waiting at the end of the race at Phoenix Raceway on Nov. 10.

So, why will Larson hoist the Bill France Cup?

Well, Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon, a four-time Cup champion himself, knows a thing or two about winning titles. So, what does he think?

Kyle Larson will seek his second NASCAR Cup Series championship with Hendrick Motorsports with his first coming in 2021.
Kyle Larson will seek his second NASCAR Cup Series
Championship with Hendrick Motorsports with his first coming in 2021.

“When they’ve had great speed and execute, I don’t think there’s a better team bringing a bigger threat than they are,” Gordon said.

And certainly, the numbers back that up.

Yeah, we get it. Larson’s got great stats. That’s what you’re telling us?

Well, in fairness, it’s a little more in-depth than that. We do our research ‘round these parts, after all!

Look, we understand that if you’ve paid any attention to any form of American auto sports over the last handful of years, you likely already assume that Larson’s career numbers look pretty good.

And that would be correct. To a point, anyway.

But a quick glance at the track-by-track data may not be as overwhelming as one would think. After all, among Larson’s average finish rankings by venue, four playoff tracks remaining rank 22nd or worse and only two – Las Vegas Motor Speedway (fifth) and Phoenix (10th) are among his top 10.

And one-fifth of the postseason will be held at drafting tracks with Atlanta Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway on the slate. Larson hasn’t always exactly come out of the chaos cleanly.

But the playoffs are about survival. And as Gordon points out, if Larson can just maintain through the opening two rounds, the final four venues may fall into his wheelhouse better than anyone’s.

“The most important thing that pops into my mind, especially when I look at that schedule, is he’s got to get to round three,” Gordon said. “That round is so strong for him. You’ve got Homestead(-Miami Speedway), Martinsville (Speedway) and (Las) Vegas (Motor Speedway).

“Homestead and Vegas, I think, are two of his best tracks. If he gets to that round, I feel like it’s a near lock - especially with the bonus points he brings to the rounds - to get to Phoenix.”

Kyle Larson does a burnout after winning the 2024 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Kyle Larson does a burnout after winning the 2024
Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

That journey will certainly include its hurdles.

For instance, since 2021, including two-plus seasons of the Next-Gen era, among all drivers that have made a Cup start at Atlanta, Larson is 41st in average finish with a mark of 23.1.

But guess who’s led the most laps at Atlanta in that same time frame? It’s Larson and it’s not close. His 291 are a full 101 more than Joey Logano in second.

Yes, things get crazy at Atlanta and Talladega. But Larson has at least one win at all the other eight tracks on the docket in just the last three-plus seasons with 12 of his 27 career victories coming at those venues.

And remember, this is a win-and-advance format, not to mention the regular season equity Larson built with 35-point cushion between himself and the playoff cutline.

So, sure, a Round of 12 that includes Talladega and the Charlotte Roval could be scary. But consider, it starts with a trip to Kansas Speedway, where Larson has won twice and led a whopping 538 laps since 2021, a figure that towers over the rest of the field with Denny Hamlin second at 175.

And on it goes. Since the start of 2021, Larson has the most or is tied for the most victories at Watkins Glen International (two), the Roval (one), Las Vegas Motor Speedway (three, nobody else with more than one) and Homestead-Miami (one). He’s led the most laps at Atlanta, Kansas, Las Vegas (602, Hamlin in second at 269) and Homestead-Miami Speedway (300, William Byron second at 159).

With the speed the No. 5 carries each week, no matter the track, it seems as if Larson, crew chief Cliff Daniels and the team have the hardest part figured out. Now, it’s just about minimizing mistakes.

“I can promise you (execution is) top of mind for Cliff Daniels and maybe also, Kyle Larson,” Gordon said. “This car, the series right now with the level of competition, there’s just no gimmes, no guarantees. You’ve got to be mistake free through as many of these races and rounds as possible if you’re going to win a championship.”

NASCAR Cup Playoffs Will Start with a 'Bang'

For the first time ever, the postseason for NASCAR’s top series will kick off on the high banks of Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday.

The Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart will be filled with figurative fireworks as the stars of NASCAR battle door-to-door for the race win and 16 playoff contenders compete for the championship. Before the green flag flies, however, literal fireworks will signify the start of NASCAR’s postseason in a massive pyrotechnic sequence never before seen at AMS.

“The Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart weekend is going to be full of unbelievable moments, and this is one fans definitely don’t want to miss,” said AMS Executive Vice President and General Manager Brandon Hutchison. “Starting the playoffs here in Atlanta is a big deal, so we’re going to get things started with a bang!”

As the field begins the final pace lap before the green flag Sunday, 1,500 pyro devices will light up a one-mile stretch spanning from Turn 1 to Turn 4 of the speedway.

Just moments after the pyrotechnic sequence concludes, the field will take the green flag and start 400 miles of close-quarters racing action. It will be the culmination of a weekend full of NASCAR racing on track and entertainment off the track. On-track NASCAR activity starts Saturday with Bennett Transportation and Logistics qualifying followed by the Focused Health 250. Sunday’s main event, the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart, starts the NASCAR Cup Series 10-race playoffs at 3 p.m. ET.

Tickets and camping accommodations for the Sept. 6-8 Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart NASCAR weekend are available at www.AtlantaMotorSpeedway.com

Today’s #NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race

Arizona Diamondbacks OF Corbin Carroll, Actress Tiffany Haddish named to Honorary Roles

The sparkplug that ignited the Arizona Diamondbacks to the 2023 National League pennant and one of the top comedic actresses of today will serve key honorary roles during Sunday’s sold-out NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix Raceway.

The track announced today that Dbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll will be the Honorary Starter, and Emmy and Grammy Award winning actress/comedian/author Tiffany Haddish will be the Honorary Pace Car driver for the historic final race of NASCAR’s 75th Anniversary Season. Carroll will wave the green flag shortly after 1 p.m. MST for a race that will air live on NBC, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Phoenix Raceway President Latasha Causey
“Talk about two incredibly talented performers,” said Phoenix Raceway President Latasha Causey.

“Corbin Carroll was electrifying to watch with the Dbacks this season and there are few human beings funnier than Tiffany Haddish. It’s an honor to have them both with us for Sunday’s historic race.”

Carroll certainly had a rookie season for the ages. The 2023 National League All-Star became the first rookie to ever hit 25 home runs and steal 54 bases in a single season. Carroll was also a force in the postseason, driving in 10 runs and stealing 5 bases. He also went 3-for-4 in the Dbacks’ National League Championship Series Game 7 clincher at Philadelphia, capturing the Snakes’ first National League pennant since 2001.

Haddish is one of the most sought-after comedic actresses of our time and no stranger to NASCAR. She began NASCAR’s 75th Anniversary Season as the Honorary Starter for the 65th running of the DAYTONA 500. She’ll now lead the field to green in a Toyota Camry TRD pace car, providing the perfect ceremonial bookend to the year.

Parking lots Sunday open at 6 a.m. and gates open at 8 a.m. for the sold-out NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race. Diplo presents Thomas Wesley will perform the pre-race concert at 11:45 a.m.

Allgaier Goes Hail Hellmann's

Allgaier Goes Hail Hellmann's

Earns Trip to Championship 4

Allgaier Goes Hail Hellmann's - #Wins #NASCAR Xfinity Series at Martinsville

Justin Allgaier entered yesterday's #NASCAR Xfinity Event just under the 2023 Playoff Cutline with a -three. Nevertheless, many believed him to be a favorite to win his way into the final four at Martinsville. Remember, in 2019, the thirty-seven-year-old won the final race in the Round of Eight when it was held at Phoenix Raceway.

On the final restart of Saturday's Dead On Tools 250 at Martinsville SpeedwayJustin Allgaier went for broke. As chaos erupted around him, the Illinois native outdragged Sheldon Creed to the finish line by a scant 0.003 seconds to gain a spot in the Championship 4 for the sixth time in his career.

Allgaier, locked in a battle with Austin Hill and Cole Custer for the final points position into the final race, was in the right place at the right time as Hill and Creed tangled off Turn 4 coming to the checkered flag. Allgaier put his foot to the floor and nipped Creed at the line.

That gives JR Motorsports half the field for the Championship 4 with Allgaier and Sam Mayer. The other participants are John Hunter Nemechek and Custer, who was involved in the last-lap crash but advanced on points.

The victory was Allgaier's 23rd in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition, his first at Martinsville and his second in this year's playoffs. It also puts him in sole possession of 11th place on the all-time NXS wins list.

“We’ve got a shot at going for a championship at Phoenix,” Allgaier told NBC Sports’ Dave Burns after the race. “My wife drove in today, my daughter’s last softball game was this afternoon. She said, ‘I got to watch the first win,’ and she decided to come here to be by my side. There’s nothing like it.

“This is an emotional one. I’ve wanted to win at Martinsville for a long time and, man, I’ve been on the other end of that too many times.”

JRM has now won four of the six NXS Playoff races this season.

Teammate Josh Berry's fifth-place finish gives JRM 500 top-five finishes in NXS competition. The first of those came in 2006, when Robby Gordon finished third at Michigan International Speedway.

Berry rallied to fifth despite extensive damage to his Chevrolet, while Brandon Jones came home 16th and Mayer was posted 25th after retiring late in the race with crash damage.

William Byron Looks to Lock Down Championship 4 Spot at Martinsville

William Byron Looks to Lock Down Championship 4 Spot at Martinsville

Six #Wins, Eight Stage Wins and Twenty Top-10 Finishes,

William Byron Looks to Lock Down Championship 4 Spot at Martinsville

William Byron enters the Round of 8 finale of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs at Martinsville Speedway in an advantageous position. The driver of the No. 24 PODS Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 holds a 30-point lead on the elimination line.

Earning a spot in the Championship 4 would be a first for Byron in the Cup Series. The deepest he has gone in the postseason has been the Round of 8 (both this year to date and last year).

William Byron Looks to Lock Down Championship 4 Spot at Martinsville

"We spent this week digging through notes from earlier this year and last at Martinsville (Speedway)," Byron said for how he and the team have prepared for this weekend’s race. "There was a wheel force test last week running the new tire so the teams could get information. We’re just trying to use what we have to hopefully get the car in a good place for when it’s unloaded.

"The fun thing about racing is you’re trying to get to the final four to go for a championship but it comes down to we all want to win every week. When you peel away all the layers of racing, it’s all about winning. We do the same processes every week with the goal of winning. That’s our number one goal still, and there’s nothing like having winning momentum heading into Phoenix (Raceway)."

While Byron has had a great 2023 season with series-best marks in wins (six), stage wins (eight) and top-10 finishes (20), he has elevated his consistency over the last 10 races. In that stretch (from Watkins Glen International to the Homestead-Miami Speedway playoff race), he leads the series in points (413), top-five finishes (six), top-10s (nine) and average finish (5.30). The Charlotte, North Carolina, native, is tied for the most wins (two) and runner-up finishes (two) in that span. He also holds the second-best average running position in the playoffs (8.53).

Heading to Martinsville, the Virginia short track has been a strong one for Byron and crew chief Rudy Fugle. In their five races together at the 0.526-mile track, they have posted a win (April 2022), three top-five finishes, four top-10s, 221 laps led and an average finish of 8.00.

This is the second year that Byron comes into the Martinsville race with a chance to advance to the title round. Last year, he carried a five-point advantage on the cutline but came up a little short in his bid to reach the title round. That disappointment has served as motivation throughout the season for Byron.

"Just the way we felt at Martinsville (Speedway) and how that moment felt is what we will try to work on this year," Byron said. "I think we learned a lot in that pressure situation (last year) and given that same situation again we will do a lot better."

The No. 24 pit crew has been at the top of the board all year when it comes to the fastest average four-tire pit stop time. They lead the series at 10.940 seconds and further improved their numbers last weekend with the fastest average four-tire stop time (9.986 seconds) at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The No. 24 pit crew consists of Spencer Bishop (jackman), Jeff Cordero (front-tire changer), Orane Ossowski (rear-tire changer), Ryan Patton (tire carrier) and Landon Walker (fueler).

"They give us a lot of confidence, especially when we are in contention for wins and in contention to run up front," Byron said of his pit crew. "The guys seem to elevate their game when those moments happen. They have been consistent all season."

#NASCAR - Hendrick Motorsports

Byron is looking to become the fifth Hendrick Motorsports driver to reach the Championship 4 in the elimination playoff era (joining Jeff Gordon in 2015, Jimmie Johnson in 2016, Chase Elliott in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and Kyle Larson in 2021 and 2023). Larson is already locked in with his win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to open the Round of 8.

Tune in on Sunday, Oct. 29, to watch Byron and the No. 24 team push forward in the playoffs at Martinsville. Coverage of the 500-lap race will be at 2 p.m. ET on NBC, NBC Sports App, MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90).

Kyle Larson Works to be 2023 Cup Champion

Kyle Larson Works to be 2023 Cup Champion

Wants to become the Third Active Cup Champion with Multiple Titles

Kyle Larson Works to become 2023 Cup Champion

It’s an exclusive list with just 17 names on it all-time, and currently, only two active drivers (Joey Logano and Kyle Busch) have earned a spot on the prestigious list.

This season, Hendrick Motorsports’  Kyle Larson has become the first Playoff competitor to secure his spot in the Championship 4 Round, and ultimately, is looking to add his name to the impressive list of NASCAR Cup Series champions with multiple titles. Larson’s last appearance in the Championship 4 Round in 2021, proved to be a fortuitous one, as the California native earned his first NASCAR Cup Series championship that year. But before he starts counting his titles, he will need to get through this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but don’t expect him to slow down, as he is the defending winner of this Playoff race (2022).

“Obviously it's nice to win and lock in, so you can focus on Phoenix,” said Larson. “At the same point you really can't look too far ahead of yourself. There's still two other races before then. I put a lot of pressure on myself going to Homestead. I want to have a great run there. I want to dominate honestly. I want to win both stages by 15 seconds and win the race by 30 (smiling). That's my goal. … I just put a lot of pressure on myself and our team to not get complacent and treat every race like it means something.”

Larson has made nine career starts at Homestead-Miami Speedway putting up one win (2022), and five top fives. His average finish at the 1.5-mile track is 10.7 and he has spent 529 laps out front.

“I'm glad I won and locked in, but I like that now I can go to Homestead, Martinsville and just race,” said Larson. “You're not really focused on points. You can be a little more aggressive now, trying to, yeah, just win really is the goal. At the same point, you don't want to piss anybody off before we get to Phoenix, so that's also a goal, is to race everybody fairly and not be a part of the story really the next couple weeks, other than winning would be great.”

Larson will lead the Hendrick Motorsports quartet to the green flag at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday afternoon. The driver of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will roll off in the fifth position.

CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoffs Heads to South Florida for Penultimate Race

CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoffs Heads to South Florida for Penultimate Race

Baptist Health Cancer Care 200 at Noon Saturday

After two weeks to regroup and go over strategy, the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series competitors are headed to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the Baptist Health Cancer Care 200, the Playoffs’ Round of 8 finale (Saturday, October 21 at 12 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN, and SiriusXM Radio) to decide who will make the Championship 4 Round and race for the title in Phoenix.

Homestead-Miami Speedway was built as a key part of plans to help the city of Homestead rebound after devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew. Groundbreaking began August 24, 1993, exactly one year after the hurricane. The track soon opened in November of 1995. This 650-acre facility is active more than 280 days per year and features both a 1.5-mile oval and a 2.21-mile road course.

The 1.5-mile oval has hosted 26 CRAFTSMAN Truck Series races since its inaugural CRAFTSMAN Truck Series event on March 17, 1996 – a race won by Dave Rezendes piloting the No. 7 Geoffrey Bodine Motorsports Ford. Notably, there have been 23 different race winners. Kyle Busc leads the series with three wins at the track, while Playoff driver Ty Majeski is the most recent winner (2022).

The 2023 season marks the second time the speedway has hosted the Round of 8 finale in the Playoffs (2022 and 2023). The track was home to the championship race in the Playoffs from 2016-2019 before landing a spot on the regular season schedule for 2020-2021 season.

Only one race during the Round of 8 finale has been won by a non-Playoff driver – Daniel Suárez at Phoenix in 2016.

NASCAR Cup - Round of 12 Elimination Race

#NASCAR Cup - Round of 12 Elimination Race

A lot on the line in Playoffs’ Elimination Race at the Charlotte Road Course

#NASCAR Cup - Round of 12 Elimination Race, Charlotte Road Course

The intense NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 12 comes down to this weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course for the Bank of America ROVAL 400 elimination-race at 2 p.m. ET this Sunday, October 8 on NBC, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90).

The 12-driver Playoff field will be cut to eight as four driver’s title hopes will come to an end this weekend. Ever since the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course has joined the NASCAR Cup Series postseason in 2018, it has proven to be a wildcard event with twists and turns that challenge the competitors along its multi-elevational 2.32-miles. Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron (Texas winner) and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney (Talladega winner) have won their way into the Round of 8, leaving six of the eight spots still available come Sunday.

Construction began on Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS) in 1959 and the track’s first NASCAR Cup Series race was held on June 19, 1960 – won by Joe Lee Johnson in a Chevrolet. But it wasn’t until 2017, that the track underwent renovations to add what is now known as the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course (ROVAL), a 2.32-mile, 17-turn, multi-elevational road course that incorporates the oval portion of the track.

This season will be the sixth-time the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course has hosted a NASCAR Cup Series Playoff race (2018-2023) and the 2.32-mile track has occupied two different spots on the series postseason schedule – from 2018-2019 the Charlotte Road Course hosted the third race in the Playoffs (Round of 16 elimination race) and from 2020-2023 the sixth race in the Playoffs (Round of 12 elimination race).

The Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course (2020-2022) is the fourth different track to host the sixth race of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs (2004-Present); joining Martinsville Speedway (2004-2010), Talladega Superspeedway (2011, 2013-2016) and Kansas Speedway (2012, 2017-2019).

From 2018-2019, the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course hosted the third race in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs – Ryan Blaney won the event in 2018 and Chase Elliott won the race in 2019.

“If you have a catastrophic issue — or not even catastrophic, but just an issue — earlier in the day that puts you a lap down or something, you’re in big trouble,” Christopher Bell, who won last year’s roval race stated. “While we are in a really good spot and I’m thankful for that, we still have to dot our I’s and cross our T’s.”

“Me over-trying has sort of hurt my racecraft, if you will, where I haven’t been finishing, frankly,” Kyle Busch said. “With me and this Next Gen car, look at how many times I’ve spun out and crashed. It’s just stupid compared to what it has been over time. I’ve still got some work to do on figuring that out.”
