Social Media Updates
from the K&N Pro Series West!

Bob Butcher's Facebook - 14 September 2013 08:15
A lap of practice this morning. To note this year is the huge dirt hills obstructing much of the 2.2 mile East course this year. The hills are built for the motorcycle events this year but certainly curtail fan view from grandstands as well as control tower plus the need for more spotters around the course for the drivers. The West course way down past the starter's stand is unchanged. Our old K&N course using both East &West courses at over 4 miles is affected also. — at Miller Motorsports Park.

Thanks for at least half of the technical inspection line being under a huge tent today. Unfortunately the template part is out in the weather...sun one minute then pouring rain the next hour off and on. — at Miller Motorsports Park.

Nothing like a cracked oil pan to get Robert Dornback and Mike Fisk excited about working on a Saturday. But on a high note we were fastest in practice.

Dylan Kwasniewski
Youngest Champion In K&N West History

From Dylan's Mother's Facebook page:

Pretty darn proud of my kid!! Thank you to  my beautiful daughter for taking time from a busy finals schedule at Cornell to come down and support your brother while he accepted this Championship with Grace and honor, What more could a mother ask for? I am blessed!

Kwasniewski's series debut came in 2011, and he won a pair of races in his first season. But he also finished outside the Top-10 on four different occasions, a product of racing as hard as he could as often as he could.

Kwasniewski's new approach in 2012 – three wins, 12 Top-5s and all 15 of his finishes in the Top-10 – earned him his first career NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship. And with it, he became the youngest champion in the history of the series.

“To get this championship was great. With my age and the tracks I had to run at before, I never had a chance to run for championships anywhere,” said Kwasniewski, of Las Vegas, Nev.. “This was our first try. We won a lot of races before, but I had to go into a season with a little different driving style. If it meant finishing second versus trying to win and maybe wrecking if I wanted to win the championship, then that was what I was going to do.”

Kwasniewski Toughs Out Roseville Win

ROSEVILLE, Calif. – Dylan Kwasniewski got what he needed.

Dylan Kwasniewski earned a huge NASCAR K&N Pro Series West victory on Saturday in the Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif.

Crucial Victory Gives Teen K&N West Points Lead

The 17-year-old from Las Vegas rebounded from an early flat tire to win the Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 in NASCAR K&N Pro Series West action on Saturday night at All American Speedway and regain the lead in the championship standings, with just one race left on the schedule.

After starting on the pole for the fifth time this season, Kwasniewski fell back through the 24-car field in the early going with the tire problem. After a quick pit stop to change the flat, he began to scratch and claw his way to the front of the field. Kwasniewski made a Lap 119 pass on Eric Holmes and led the rest of the way for his third victory of the season and the fifth of his career.

In Victory Lane after the race, Kwasniewski talked about his early misfortune and battling back for the win.

“We didn’t even lead a lap; then we got a flat tire,” he said. “Right after I got in and we changed that flat, I got taken out and went to the back again.”

Despite the tight battling that went on around the third-mile Roseville oval, Kwasniewski was able to work his way back to the front.

“We just had an awesome car,” he said of the No. 03 Royal Purple/Rockstar Ford. “That was by far the best race I’ve had all year. It was so good to finish in the front. There’s no better feeling.

“I’m in the lead by one or two points,” Kwasniewski said of the championship standings. “This was by far the best race. We not only gained the points lead, but we won the race. I can’t thank the guys enough, and my mom, too. This is the happiest I’ve been all year.”

Holmes, who led a race-high 101 laps, held on for second – finishing .436 seconds behind Kwasniewski.

“It was a great night for the NAPA Toyota No. 20 car,” Holmes said. “I’m disappointed we didn’t get the win, but Dylan had a really fast car coming through the pack. Congratulations to him. That was an awesome win for him. On long greens, I was a little better than him, I felt. But on the short greens, he got by me. It was great side-by-side racing through the front of the field.”

David Mayhew was close behind in third. Derek Thorn, who lost the lead to Holmes after contact on Lap 33, recovered to take fourth – while Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Cameron Hayley finished fifth. Jamie Krzysik finished sixth in his series debut, with Travis Milburn in seventh and rookie Dallas Montes in eighth. Former series champion Mike David, making his first start since 2009, and Jonathon Gomez rounded out the top 10.

Kwasniewski came into the night trailing Gene Price Motorsports teammate and defending NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion Greg Pursley by 14 points in the standings. It was a sub-par performance for Pursley. After starting 13th, he ran into early trouble and had to make a quick pit stop. Starting from the back, he also made his way to the front and was up to fourth by the midway point of the race. He faded in the second half, however, and ended up 13th.

Kwasniewski came away with a two-point lead over Pursley as the series heads to the season finale, Casino Arizona 50, at Phoenix International Raceway on Nov. 10. Thorn is third in the standings, with Holmes fourth and Mayhew fifth. They are followed by Michael Self, Hayley, Austin Dyne, Gomez and Ryan Philpott.

In addition to the series championship, the Sunoco Rookie of the Year title will be decided at Phoenix – with Dyne holding a slim lead over Hayley.

The Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 will air on SPEED on Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. ET.

K&N West News & Notes: Albuquerque

Pursley, Kwasniewski Chase Title As Series Visits New Mexico
By Kevin W. Green, NASCAR

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The battle for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship continues as the series heads into its final three races of the season. Defending champion Greg Pursley holds a 15-point advantage over second-year driver Dylan Kwasniewski in the championship standings as the series makes its inaugural visit to NAPA Speedway just west of Albuquerque, N.M., for the NAPA Auto Parts 150 on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Pursley and Kwasniewski are teammates at Gene Price Motorsports. They both excel on track and are driven to win, but beyond that the two are quite different. Pursley is a 44-year-old former motorcycle racer who can be found working in the GPM shop when he is not behind the wheel of a stock car. Meanwhile, Kwasniewski, as a member of NASCAR’s Next 9 program, is one of nine NASCAR K&N Pro Series drivers who represent the next wave of young talent set to make an impact on the national series scene. He became the first 15-year-old to race in the series when he joined the circuit early last season and has said he wants to be the David Beckham of NASCAR.

Pursley was dominant a season ago, winning six of the first eight races en route to the series title. Although his four wins this season have been more spread out over the schedule, it was his two most recent wins – July 28 at Colorado National Speedway in Dacono, Colo., and Aug. 26 at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway – that fueled his move past Kwasniewski in the standings. If he retains the lead through the final three races, Pursley will become the 13th driver in series history with back-to-back championships with the most recent being Mike Duncan in 2004 and 2005.

“We plan to go out there and keep doing what we’re doing, keep our heads down and keep trying to pull off these top five finishes,” Pursley said. “Our goal now, obviously, is to finish in front of the 03 car for the last three races. We had a feeling it was going to come down for the championship to the last race. It’s pretty cool to have both teams come out of Gene Price Motorsports and do that.”

Kwasniewski also had a great season in 2011, with a record–setting year as a series rookie. His success has continued this year, with two wins and three poles. When he took over the lead in the championship standings just before his 17th birthday, he became the youngest driver in series history to lead the points. Now, he’s looking to gain the lead back and take the title.

“I think we definitely have a chance,” said the Las Vegas teenager. “We have a great team and great sponsors, with Rockstar and Royal Purple. It’s going to be tough to beat Greg. I think our team can pull together and I think we can get the strength to succeed in those last couple of races.”

K&N Pro Series West Champion - Greg Pursley

Greg Pursley’s NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship season began last year with a win in the first race at Phoenix International Raceway.

He hopes to repeat that victory and get a jump in his charge for a second title when the curtain goes up on the 2012 season with the Talking Stick Resort 50 at PIR on Saturday, March 3. It will mark the start of the 59th season for the West’s premier stock car circuit.

After winning last year’s season opener, Pursley went on to dominate series competition beyond the midway point, winning six of the first eight races. The stretch run was a different story, however. Four different drivers visited Victory Lane in the final six races, as newcomers began to flex their muscle. Those young drivers look to pose a serious title challenge to Pursley and other veterans of the series this year.

Pursley has been considered the one to beat when it comes to Phoenix, meanwhile. After winning in the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011, the 44-year-old was going for a record third straight Phoenix victory last November – but ended up in the wall while battling for the lead.
