Finalists for 2025 Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award

The NASCAR Foundation Announces Four NASCAR Fans Making a Difference

 

Online fan vote for award winner of $100,000 donation is live on NASCARfoundation.org now through November 3 at 12:00 p.m. ET

The NASCAR Foundation announced the four NASCAR fans named as finalists for the 15th annual Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award, recognized for the work they do through local children’s organizations in their communities.

 

The NASCAR Foundation’s Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award, named in honor of the foundation’s late founder and chairwoman Betty Jane France, recognizes NASCAR fans who volunteer for children’s causes in their local communities. Each finalist receives a minimum $25,000 donation for their organization with the overall winner receiving a $100,000 donation from The NASCAR Foundation to further their efforts.

 

“These four finalists represent the true spirit of the sport, not just in their passion for NASCAR, but in their tireless commitment to making a difference in their communities,” said Nichole Krieger, Executive Director and Vice President, The NASCAR Foundation. “Gregg, Hannah, Kate and John all support amazing organizations, doing important work in so many different capacities, and they truly embody everything the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award represents.”

 

The 15th annual Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award finalists include:

 

• Gregg Morton of Bradenton, Florida, a volunteer of CureSearch for Children’s Cancer, supporting their mission of ending childhood cancer. Gregg has been a volunteer with CureSearch for five years and devotes 20 plus hours a week to the organization.
• Hannah Smith of Richmond, Virginia, a volunteer of Sportable Adaptive Sports and Recreation supporting their mission of providing sporting opportunities to athletes of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Hannah has been a volunteer of the organization for 10 years and was previously a Sportable athlete.
• Kate O’Neal of Hazel Green, Alabama, a volunteer of Caring Link, an organization that meets the needs of local students by providing essential items through on-site Care Closets at local schools. Kate founded the organization in 2022.
• John Grieshaber of Wilmington, Delaware, a volunteer of A Better Chance for Our Children, an organization that focuses on finding families for waiting children, most from foster care and many with special needs. John has been a volunteer with ABCFOC for eight years assisting with their Rec-n-Respite program.

The overall winner will be determined by an online vote, which is open now, every day through Nov. 3. Those who wish to vote for their favorite finalist and their impact on the community may vote once a day.

Speediatrics Fun Day

Festival Powered by Kaulig Racing at DAYTONA

 

After a week of healthy and active curriculum, the kids of Food Brings Hope Community got to have a day of fun and games in the NASCAR Experience at Daytona International Speedway!

The kids were greeted with pompoms and cheer from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University's cheer team, with special appearances from Miss America (Madison Marsh), as well as ARCA driver Ed Pompa and Kaulig Racing drivers Daniel Dye, Daniel Hemric and Josh Williams.

 

Finally, with the help of our sponsors Brown & Brown Insurance, Jeep Beach, Kaulig Giving, Kaulig Racing and Ryan Blaney Family Foundation, the kids were presented with brand new bikes and bike helmets, and ‘The NASCAR Foundation’ was able to leave a $15,000 donation to Food Brings Hope Community!

The NASCAR Foundation’s Speedy Bear Brigade

"Speedy Bears” will be delivered to children in hospitals surrounding National Teddy Bear Day

 

NASCAR-themed teddy bears are being delivered to children in hospitals across the United States, Mexico and Canada as The NASCAR Foundation and Kaulig Giving join together for the seventh annual Speedy Bear Brigade. This year’s efforts will bring the cumulative total to more than 11,000 Speedy Bears delivered since the program’s inception, providing comfort to children during their hospital stays.

 

“To have surpassed 10,000 bears delivered in just seven years is truly amazing,” said Nichole Krieger, Executive Director and Vice President, The NASCAR Foundation. “Support from donors like Kaulig Giving, NASCAR partners and all of our wonderful NASCAR fans is so important to help us continue the vision of Betty Jane France to bring comfort to kids in the hospital.”

 

This year’s efforts mark the biggest to date with 100 hospitals participating in race markets across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The initiative surrounds National Teddy Bear Day on Saturday, Sept. 9, with events in Akron, Ohio, home to Kaulig Giving headquarters, as well as Charlotte, N.C. and Daytona Beach, Fla., home to NASCAR headquarters.

 

 

“We’re honored to team up with The NASCAR Foundation to deliver cheer, positivity and comfort to children in hospitals across the country through the Speedy Bear Brigade program,” said Matt Kaulig, team owner of Kaulig Racing and founder of Kaulig Giving. “Our partnership with The NASCAR Foundation continues to grow on and off the track and is a priority for us. NASCAR fan Ralph Maccarone wins 2022 Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award

 

The NASCAR Foundation announced Ralph Maccarone as the winner of the 12th annual Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award during a live-streamed announcement on NASCAR’s YouTube channel Thursday. As the award winner, Maccarone secured a $100,000 donation from The NASCAR Foundation to Who We Play For, a nationwide organization whose mission is to eliminate preventable sudden cardiac arrest in young people through affordable heart screenings.

 

“It’s a great honor to have won the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award,” said Maccarone following the announcement. “The entire NASCAR organization and The NASCAR Foundation have been phenomenal to work with and we’re so excited to use these funds to help students and save lives.”

 

Maccarone, who co-founded Who We Play For after losing his 15-year-old son to sudden cardiac arrest, has served and supported the organization for more than a decade. He earned the most online votes from a pool of volunteers, including: Dan Majetich of Nick and Kelly Children’s Heart Fund, Tammy Garrett of Rapahope Children’s Retreat Foundation of Alabama and Tracy Williams of Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation. Together, the group of finalists have impacted more than 100,000 children through their 81 combined years of service. Each of these organizations has earned a $25,000 donation from The NASCAR Foundation in recognition of their nominated volunteers’ achievements.

 

“Ralph has dedicated his life to ensuring young people receive the proper screenings that could one day save their lives,” said Nichole Krieger, Executive Director of The NASCAR Foundation. “He has spent countless hours volunteering at screenings, fundraising and advocating for change as Who We Play For has grown into a national organization that’s reaching more communities each year. His work and the work of all of our finalists exemplify the lasting legacy of Betty Jane France and the countless number of children The NASCAR Foundation continues to impact.”

 

Maccarone co-founded Who We Play For in 2012 with the vision to inspire and empower schools, sports clubs and communities to provide heart screenings for all student athletes and students. Through his work, Maccarone has helped bring Who We Play For to many regions across the country as he has advocated for sudden cardiac arrest legislation on the local, state and federal level. With the $100,000 award, Maccarone hopes to bring heart screening events to more NASCAR communities over the next two years.

 

Aside from his service, Maccarone has been a fan of NASCAR after first being introduced to the sport by his wife, Valerie. He and his son started following Ryan Newman after discovering the driver shared the same birthday as his son.

 

In its 12 years, The Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award has recognized 48 NASCAR fans who are dedicated volunteers working for children’s causes in communities nationwide. More than 475,000 children’s lives have been affected by the program with $2 million contributed to children’s charities.

• Dan Majetich of Tempe, Arizona, a co-founder and volunteer with Nick and Kelly Children’s Heart Fund of Arizona, an organization that assists Arizona families of children with congenital heart disease and acquired heart disease. After losing their sons, Nick and Kelly, to congenital heart defects, Dan and his wife, Margaret, founded the Nick and Kelly Children’s Heart Fund in 1985. Since then, Dan has become a leading advocate for families of children with heart disease, helping to provide financial assistance and hosting annual camps for children to experience activities that normally may not be accessible to children with heart defects. • Ralph Maccarone of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, a co-founder and volunteer of Who We Play For, a nationwide organization whose mission is to eliminate preventable sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in young people through affordable heart screenings. After losing his 15-year-old son to SCA, Ralph helped to co-found Who We Play For and over the last decade has dedicated his time to volunteering at heart screening events, fundraising and advocating for policy changes and serving as the chairman of the Board of Directors. • Tammy Garrett of Mobile, Alabama, a volunteer with Rapahope Children’s Retreat Foundation of Alabama, a non-profit organization that provides opportunities to families on the childhood cancer journey through recreational support programs. A volunteer for 17 years, Tammy is involved in all aspects of Rapahope, including involvement on the organization’s fundraising and planning committees. She is also a regular attendee of the Camp Week, Sibling Weekend, Teen Weekend and Family Day programs, often volunteering her time to cooking meals and helping campers learn to fish. Learn more and vote for Tammy!

• Tracy Williams of Jacksonville, Florida, a volunteer with the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports families that are tackling childhood cancer. For the past 17 years, Tracy has played an integral role in delivering support and raising funds for families affected by childhood cancer. A chairperson to the organization’s signature fundraising event, The Celebrity Golf Classic, Tracy has helped raise over $7 million dollars, coordinating program content and logistics to assure the event’s success including its transition to a virtual environment during the pandemic. The NASCAR Foundation Partners with Martinsville Speedway for Third-Annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival

On Friday, April 9th, The NASCAR Foundation partnered with Martinsville Speedway to host its third-annual Speediatrics Fun Day Festival with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge, providing special programming for children at its Uptown and Center Club sites.

 

This NASCAR-themed Speediatrics Fun Day Festival is the culminating event after a 2-week program designed to inspire more than 100 children to lead a healthy lifestyle. In addition to learning about healthy living habits through the lens of NASCAR, children participated in NASCAR-themed field day activities such as a Goodyear Tire Race, Champ’s Looking for Lug Nuts, Chase’s Sponge Relay, Safety Sam’s Stop & Go Relay and Pit Stop Pete’s Puzzling Placement to encourage them to stay active while having fun.

 

“We love partnering with Martinsville Speedway in this community and we couldn’t think of a more impactful way to reach area children than supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge,” said Nichole Krieger, The NASCAR Foundation Executive Director. “Our Speediatrics Fun Day Festivals are really such a fun way for us to connect with children and help communicate the importance of their overall health and wellness.”

 

The festival is one of eight events to be held in race markets across the country as part of The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Children’s Fund, a program that supports needs expressed by hospitals, specialty clinics, camps, and others providing children’s medical and healthcare services.

As part of the two-week programming provided, students attending Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge participated in a video call on April 6 with Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell and NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Jeb Burton. On Thursday, the Martinsville Speedway pace car was on display at the club locations and the children decorated a welcome banner that will be displayed at the speedway this weekend during the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 NASCAR Cup Series race.

 

“Thank you to The NASCAR Foundation for once again bringing its Speediatrics Fun Day Festival to the Martinsville area,” said Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell. “It is so much fun working with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Blue Ridge and spending time with the next generation of NASCAR fans.”

 

In the days following the event, the kids will participate in a step challenge using pedometer watches from The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Fit Kits made possible by a generous donation from the Harvest Youth Board. The NASCAR Foundation will also provide a financial grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Blue Ridge to further fund their efforts for kids.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America Announced as Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR

NASCAR and Boys & Girls Clubs of America announced a multiyear partnership Sunday that will support the nonprofit’s mission of enabling and enriching the lives of young people. As the Official Youth Community Partner of NASCAR, Boys & Girls Clubs of America will work with NASCAR and industry stakeholders to engage more than 4.6 million youth and teens across the country with NASCAR content and experiences.

The nationwide partnership will focus on three core areas — STEM education, career development and diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives — and extend across all NASCAR platforms and race tracks. Programming will include both virtual and at-track experiences with an emphasis on local Boys & Girls Club locations within NASCAR race markets.

 

Partnership efforts will build on the continuing work of The NASCAR Foundation to advance children’s well-being, including ongoing relationships with several Boys & Girls Clubs across the country.

Additionally, NASCAR’s work with Boys & Girls Clubs of America will focus on career development and mentoring across a breadth of industry disciplines and will include engagement with industry executives and other employees.

 

Throughout the partnership, NASCAR will collaborate with drivers, teams and tracks to amplify the sport’s commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and deepen the engagement with Club youth and teens. NASCAR partners will also have the opportunity to integrate with the new partnership, and several partners will look to build on their own longstanding relationships with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

 

Eric Shanks, CEO and executive producer of FOX Sports, and Mark Lazarus, chairman of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, are both members of the non-profit’s Board of Governors. Shanks attended Boys & Girls Clubs as a youth and is now a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs Alumni Hall of Fame. Next month, Lazarus will serve as chair of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Annual Conference.

 

NBCUniversal, parent company of NASCAR Premier Partner Xfinity, has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs for nearly 20 years to drive digital equity. The company has opened WiFi-Connected Lift Zones at Boys & Girls Clubs across the country, including an upcoming Martinsville, Virginia, location to celebrate the NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash, to provide a safe space for students to access Internet for free to participate in distance learning and conduct schoolwork.

 

Coca-Cola is currently celebrating 75 years of partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America and is also represented on the non-profit’s Board of Governors. Truex Jr. Wins $25,000 for His Foundation

The NASCAR Foundation’s Betty Jane France Memorial ‘High Speed Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament’ is traditionally held in Daytona Beach prior to the DAYTONA 500. However, this year the event was hosted via a virtual partnership with World Poker Tour® on January 13. 

Utilizing the World Poker Tour’s online sweepstakes-based poker platform, ClubWPT™, the tournament allowed for two playing styles to happen simultaneously – Sit and Go tables and Multi-Tables. Participating NASCAR Cup Series drivers had a chance to earn funds for their charities with the first place finishing driver receiving a $25,000 donation, the second place finishing driver a $15,000 donation and the third place finishing driver a $10,000 donation.

The final table streamed on January 22 at 5:30 p.m. on NASCAR’s YouTube channel with 2018 Women in Poker Hall of Fame Inductee Maria Ho and NASCAR on NBC analyst Rick Allen serving as hosts and commentators.

The high stakes event featured NASCAR Cup Series champions Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex, Jr., NASCAR Hall of Fame inductees Rusty Wallace and Bobby Labonte, professional poker stars Maria Ho, Phil Hellmuth and Erik Seidel, and actor Josh Malina, among other celebrities and participants.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit The NASCAR Foundation’s Speediatrics Children’s Fund, a program that aims to provide health care resources and wellness programs for children.

The final table will feature six players, including Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr., professional poker player Phil Hellmuth, one celebrity Josh Malina and two participants from the multi-table, Larry Leech, and Craig Wood. The action came down to a showdown with recent NASCAR Cup Champions Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. the last two standing.

2020 Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award Winner

Charlene spends approximately 120 hours per month volunteering and advocating for the eight Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia / Flagler where she serves on their Board of Directors and helps organize their annual Christmas Celebration and Honor Roll Banquet; she has worked with the organization for nine years.

 

Boys and Girls Clubs of Volusia / Flagler works to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens and leaders. The organization serves more than 1,400 members each year with 87 percent of members being youth on free or reduced lunch. No child is turned away for the inability to pay. Programs include sports, fitness and recreation, health and life skills, the arts, character and leadership development and education and career development. 

 

Funds received from winning the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award would provide after school bus transportation through Volusia County Schools to the clubs for a quarter of the children, impacting over 150 youth.

Calling All Thrill-Seekers; Registration Now Open For ‘Over the Edge’ Rappelling Fundraiser

Proceeds will Support Education and Healthcare Services for Children in the Charlotte Community

Registration is now open for “Over the Edge,” a unique fundraising event which allows thrill-seekers to rappel 10 stories down the Embassy Suites Charlotte Uptown on Sept. 25-26, motivated by benefitting education and healthcare services to children in the Charlotte area through Friends of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Foundation and The NASCAR Foundation.

This Over the Edge event follows a similar, highly successful fundraiser held by The NASCAR Foundation last fall at NASCAR headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida.

NASCAR Hall of Fame Inductee Richard Petty was on-hand at a press conference launching the event to announce that Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Darrell Wallace Jr. will participate.

Other NASCAR industry VIPs who have signed on to rappel include Vice Chairperson and ISC Chief Executive Officer Lesa France Kennedy, NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Rusty Wallace, Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Chris Buescher, NASCAR Hall of Fame Executive Director Winston Kelley and The NASCAR Foundation Executive Director Nichole Krieger.

“It is with great excitement that we welcome the Over the Edge event to our community with dynamic partners like NASCAR and The NASCAR Foundation. Not only will this allow our participants to have an experience of a lifetime, but it will support the work of two foundations that are equally focused on enriching the lives of young people in need across our region,” said NASCAR Hall of Fame Executive Director Winston Kelley.

“Our Over the Edge Event in Daytona was well-supported by the community and we have no doubt that this Charlotte event will be even better,” said The NASCAR Foundation Chairman Mike Helton. “Obviously, this is no ordinary fundraiser and it really has to be seen to be believed. This will be fun, exciting and produce a fantastic end result for The NASCAR Foundation and the Friends of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Foundation.”

The event will open with a media day on Tuesday, Sept. 25, with media members and VIPs invited to rappel. Individual rappelling will follow on Wednesday, Sept. 26. All activities are coordinated by the Nova Scotia-based Over the Edge organization which operates rappelling events throughout the United States.

“We are ecstatic to be a part of this amazing event that supports education and healthcare services for children in our community. We appreciate all that NASCAR does for our communities,” said BPR Properties President Birju Patel.

The first 130 fundraisers to raise $1,000 will earn their spot to go Over the Edge. Employees of area businesses can also raise funds to “Toss the Boss” – one of many sponsorship categories. Underwriting opportunities and corporate sponsorships are also available.

The #NASCAR Foundation Our Impact Over 12 Years

Another year has passed which means the NASCAR Foundation has helped even more kids! They have given $32 million to help more than 1 million children over the last twelve years through many special programs, including:

• • Providing access to medical treatment and care for more than 600,000 children through the Speediatrics Children’s Fund.
• • Granting over 450 wishes to sick children whose wish is to come to a NASCAR race
• • Funding summer camp programs for 1,700 children- many of whom have special needs and wouldn’t be able to attend camps that don’t cater specifically to their unique abilities.

The NASCAR Foundation invites all individuals and local community groups to volunteer with them ‘at-track.’ Volunteering at-track is a great way to get the full experience of being at the races. 

They have seven ‘at-track’ fulfilling opportunities this year.
