Kaulig Racing's 'Epic Undertaking' Fulfills Ram's Ambition

From Scratch to a Five-Truck Fleet

 

It was audacious, ridiculous and outrageous all at once, and Matt Kaulig knew it

 

Kaulig stood on pit road in the minutes before the start of the Feb. 13 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series opener at Daytona International Speedway, the track's lights high atop the frontstretch grandstands illuminating the 37-truck grid. Kaulig's new Ram truck team had yet to run a lap in anger, and already he could enjoy a moment of major accomplishment.

 

Five shiny Kaulig Racing trucks were scattered across the starting field. Only a few months earlier, the team had not even a truck fender, with the upcoming season an onrushing bull and the clock ticking.

 

"It was very, very, very surreal," Kaulig said. "For us to build five trucks -- we didn't even sign the Ram deal until the summer -- it was an epic undertaking. Some people in the racing world understand what we did to accomplish that, but they don't really understand how we did it. I mean, we had nothing.

 

"Daytona was an awesome moment."

 

Now the Truck season is three races old, and teams have been enjoying a three-week break before Race No. 4 today at Darlington Raceway.

 

 

Three races in, Kaulig executives are pleased to have had a top-10 finish in each race but are more excited by the fact that they "won" the rushed preseason construction process and have dominated much of the current talk about the Truck Series, in particular Ram's big splash at Daytona.

Ram is charging back into the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series — the way that only Ram can. In partnership with Thrill Sports Productions, Ram is launching Race For The Seat, a bold new reality competition series that gives 15 aspiring drivers the chance of a lifetime: to earn a spot in one of five Ram 1500 race trucks on the Kaulig Racing team for the 2026 season.

Over eight adrenaline-fueled episodes, contestants will go head-to-head on iconic tracks, including Virginia International Raceway and South Boston (Va.) Speedway. Viewers will get an inside look at the drivers’ lives, their triumphs and setbacks, and the raw determination it takes to rise through the ranks of motorsports.

 

“Ram is an iconic American brand, and I’m excited to partner up with them for their new reality series, Race for the Seat,” said Dana White, UFC CEO. “This reality show is all about finding up-and-coming drivers and giving them a massive platform. The best always rise to the top in this type of competition. We are going to find the next generation of superstars for the NASCAR truck series,” added White.

 

The series will feature unfiltered, behind-the-scenes commentary from UFC CEO Dana White, Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis and Kaulig Racing Team Owner Matt Kaulig — offering fans a rare look at the business, strategy, and heart of racing. Special guest appearances will add to drama both on and off the track.

 

“We promised Ram would approach NASCAR differently — and Race For The Seat is proof. Sometimes raw talent isn’t enough. Many successful careers start with an opportunity, a lucky break — or in my case, a good old-fashioned kick in the ass,” said Tim Kuniskis, CEO of Ram.

Tony Stewart Joins Ram’s Free Agent Program with Kaulig Racing at Daytona Truck Race

 

NASCAR fans, get ready: Tony Stewart, three-time Cup Series champion and motorsports icon, is officially returning to the NASCAR stage at Daytona in 2026. Stewart will team up with Ram Trucks and Kaulig Racing as the first competitor in Ram’s groundbreaking Free Agent program within the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. 

 

Stewart, known to fans as “Smoke,” last competed in the NASCAR Truck Series in 2005 and the Cup Series in 2016 before shifting his focus to NHRA drag racing with Dodge. His return marks a monumental moment for the sport—blending Stewart’s legendary competitive spirit with Ram’s bold re-entry into NASCAR.

 

 

“I’ve raced just about everything with four wheels at Daytona, but never a truck.

 

So when a seat in the new Ram was offered up for their first race back in NASCAR, I didn’t hesitate,” said Stewart, a 19-time winner at Daytona across the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and IROC.

Derek Kraus to Make NASCAR Cup Series Debut with Kaulig Racing

Kraus to Compete in Limited Schedule in the No. 16 Camaro ZL1

 

Kaulig Racing announced today that Derek Kraus will make his NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) debut in the No. 16 Western States Flooring Camaro ZL1 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

 

Kraus, who made eight NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) starts for Kaulig Racing in 2023 and earned three top-10 finishes, will also compete in a limited NCS schedule in the team’s No. 16 Camaro ZL1.

 

“I’m really excited to make my first Cup Series start with Kaulig Racing, the team that I also made my Xfinity Series debut with!” said Kraus. “I’m thankful to Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice for believing in me, as well as Western States Flooring, a partner that has supported me throughout my career. I can’t wait to get to work with Travis Mack’s group and see what we can do in Las Vegas.”

 

Although he will make his first NCS start in Las Vegas, Kraus practiced and qualified the No. 16 Camaro ZL1 in 2023 at Richmond Raceway, while teammate, AJ Allmendinger, competed in the NXS race at Road America before flying to Richmond to compete in the NCS race that Sunday.

 

“We’re excited to have Derek Kraus make his first Cup start with us at Kaulig Racing,” said Chris Rice, president of Kaulig Racing. “Not only did he practice in the No. 16 last year for AJ Allmendinger, but Derek is our simulator driver that helps get our setups ready each week. We know what Derek is capable of, and we can’t wait to see what he can do starting in Las Vegas.”

After a week of healthy and active curriculum, the kids of Food Brings Hope Community got to have a day of fun and games in the NASCAR Experience at Daytona International Speedway!

Justin Haley - Unsung Hero

It must have been so tempting to ‘throw it in there’ and possibly take out the front of the field

An unsung hero is someone or something that has done great work, provided a great benefit, or performed a heroic deed, but has not received the credit or recognition they deserve

 

By now almost everyone has heard the NASCAR Cinderella story about New Zealander Shane van Gisbergen, the first driver to win a race in his first NASCAR Cup Series start since Johnny Rutherford accomplished the feat 60 years ago.

 

This three-time Supercars champion, driving for Trackhouse Racing with Sponsor Enhance Health, Project 91, charged from eighth on a Lap 61 restart to the front of the field and won the series’ first street race on the Chicago Street Course in overtime.

 

Don’t get me wrong, NASCAR Race Mom (NRM) was impressed with the unexpected drive. The racing was even more exciting because the pass for first was not made once, but twice due to an ill-timed caution.

 

It was amazing racing . . . . . not only on van Gisbergen’s part but on the part of second place finisher - Justin Haley.

 

Haley started the ‘Grant Park 220’ from 37th after not being able to qualify due to unapproved adjustments.

 

After staying out at the end of stage two, Haley would take over the race lead to begin the final stage, but would need to save fuel if the remainder of the race were to go green. Haley continued to lead as more cautions fell throughout the final stage, leading a total of 23 laps.

 

When a caution fell with eight laps remaining, Haley fought to keep his lead on the restart over the No. 91, who had sixteen-laps-fresher tires, but ultimately lost the battle for first. Haley went on to finish second.

 

It would have been easy to get caught up in the fray as Justin sparred with the world-class driver, van Gisbergen who was on sixteen-laps better tires. However, in a mature move, Justin raced hard but clean.

 

“Yeah, it was tough,” Haley said. “I put it in the tire barrier yesterday and we stayed up all night. I stayed with the guys through the rain and rewrapped this thing, put a new body on it…

 

“Obviously congrats to Project 91. It sucks, obviously, where we are right now we don’t have a… we aren’t in position to win every week, so coming that close obviously is not what you want.

 

“But just really proud of everyone at Kaulig Racing and what an awesome event. Can’t wait to come back next year.”

 

It must have been so tempting to ‘throw it in there’ and possibly take out the front of the field. In a culture where winning is everything, the clean drive by Justin Haley on the streets of Chicago treated the fans to first-class competition and their fairy tale ending. Phoenix Raceway Welcomes the Xfinity Series

Kyle Busch to Start Race in Last Position (39th)

 

After a battle in the desert last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway that saw Austin Hill snag the checkered flag for the second time this season, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will now be heading to Phoenix Raceway for the United Rentals 200 on Saturday, March 11 at 4:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR radio.

 

There have been 42 NASCAR Xfinity Series races at the Arizona track, producing 23 different race winners and 22 different pole winners. Eleven races have been won from the pole or first starting position, most recently by Ty Gibbs in last season’s Championship Race.

 

Although Gibbs is the most recent pole winner, Kyle Busch is the most decorated driver in the Xfinity Series at Phoenix Raceway. He holds the qualifying record with a speed of 138.504 mph, leads the Xfinity Series in poles (10), has posted the most wins (11), top 10s (20), lead lap finishes (23), and is tied with Kevin Harvick for most top fives (17).

 

Xfinity Series drivers will kick off their weekend with practice on Saturday, March 11 at 12:35 p.m. ET followed by qualifying at 1:05 p.m. ET on FS1.

Leading the NASCAR Xfinity Series in wins at Phoenix Raceway is Kaulig Racing’s Kyle Busch,  who will be pulling double duty and making his second Xfinity Series start of the season in the No. 10 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet this weekend. In the process, Busch will have the opportunity to break the tie with NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin for the most wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at a single track if he wins this weekend at Phoenix. Martin and Busch are currently tied for series most wins a single track at 11 wins each – Busch (Phoenix Raceway) and Martin (Rockingham Speedway).

 

In his 24 starts at Phoenix, Busch has posted 11 wins (2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013 sweep, 2014, 2015, 2016 sweep, 2019), 17 top fives and 20 top 10s.

 

His most recent Xfinity Series stint at the track was in 2020, where he won the pole and ultimately finished third.

 

Winners Galore: Xfinity Drivers to watch at Phoenix

With Phoenix Raceway serving as home of the 2023 Championship Race, it is a track that all drivers hope to conquer – and three fulltime Xfinity Series drivers entered in this weekend’s United Rentals 200 have done just that – Justin Allgaier, Brandon Jones and Daniel Hemric.

 

JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier has made a name for himself at the one-mile track, posting two wins (2017, 2019), nine top fives and 17 top 10s in his 25 Phoenix starts. In his most recent appearance, he posted a third-place finish.

 

Allgaier’s JRM teammate, Brandon Jones, added his name to this list of drivers who have found Victory Lane at Phoenix Raceway in 2020. Jones has made 14 starts at Phoenix, posting one win (2020), three top fives and six top 10s. In last year’s Spring Phoenix race, he posted a runner-up finish.

 

Kaulig Racing’s Daniel Hemric heads into the weekend looking to post his second win at Phoenix Raceway after taking the checkered flag at the 2021 Xfinity Series Championship Race. In his 10 series starts at Phoenix, he has posted one win (2021), three top fives and seven top 10s. In both Phoenix races last season, he posted an eighth-place finish.

Justin Haley set the fastest lap in Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum qualifying Saturday night at the quarter-mile purpose-built track inside the famous Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The 23-year-old Indiana-native drove the No. 31 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet to the top qualifying position with a lap of 67.099 mph and will start out front for one of the four heat races Sunday afternoon to formally set the 27-car field for the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum non-points exhibition opener Sunday night (8 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

 

Two-time series champion Kyle Busch will be making his debut for the Richard Childress Racing team from the front row of the second heat race; his No. 8 RCR Chevrolet second fastest overall at 66.406 mph.

 

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell, who advanced to the 2022 Championship 4 Round, will start his No. 20 JGR Toyota on pole in the third heat race and Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron will start the No. 24 Chevrolet out front in the fourth heat race.

“I feel like we were a pretty good car in practice there, just wasn’t getting the full potential out of the race car and obviously in qualifying our lap was just dominant,” Haley said. “I feel pretty confident about where we are. It’s obviously a good place to start the season. Not sure why we’re so good here. I wish I had this talent at all the races but pretty thankful and it’s really cool to give Kaulig Racing their first pole, my first pole as a driver in my second year as a driver here.”

 

The qualifying session consisted of three laps – one warm-up and two timed, the faster of the two-timed laps counting toward their starting position in the four heat races.

Two cars – the No. 54 JGR Toyota driven by Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate Ty Gibbs and the No. 12 Team Penske Ford driven by Ryan Blaney – will both start last in their heat races. Blaney’s qualifying time was 11th fastest at the time but ultimately disallowed because after spinning on a hot lap he drove the wrong direction to the back straightaway and spun his car around to complete the lap at speed. It’s illegal to drive backwards on track.

 

Gibbs was also penalized after it was determined his Joe Gibbs Racing crew made unapproved adjustments just prior to the qualifying session. Gibbs’ Toyota caught fire during the final practice session and was taken to the garage for repairs. The team was able to fix it without going to a back-up car, however NASCAR determined some of the repairs fell into the “unapproved adjustments” penalty category.

 

“First off want to thank my whole Monster Energy team they’ve worked so hard,” Gibbs said. “We have to start last in the heat race but we’ve got a great car. “It’ll be fun,” he added with a smile.

 

The format to set the 27-car feature field Sunday afternoon includes four 25-lap heat races with the top-five finishers advancing to the feature. There will then by a pair of ‘last chance qualifiers’ with the top-three finishers in each advancing to the feature with one final starting spot awarded to the highest 2022 championship finisher that hadn’t moved into the main event field otherwise. Nine cars entered will miss the feature show.

Kaulig GivingTM Helps Daniel Hemric Grant Additional Scholarship

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2022) – Kaulig Giving™ has joined Daniel Hemric in supporting local Rowan-Cabarrus Community College students by contributing to Hemric’s Be The Change Scholarship endowment. By doing so, the annual scholarship, seeded in 2019, will be awarded to two students in 2022.

 

“We started Kaulig Giving™ in 2018 to support many different causes just like Daniel’s Be the Change scholarship,” said Matt Kaulig, Kaulig Racing team owner and Executive Chairman of Kaulig Giving™. “Helping students to further their education and pursue their passion is something many of the organizations we are involved in advocate for. Daniel being a part of the Kaulig Racing family made this an easy decision for us to get involved in ‘Be the Change’ and support the community he grew up in.”

 

Through the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Foundation, the scholarship is available to a student from Cabarrus or Rowan County that qualifies for financial aid and has chosen a field of study in motorsports, welding, or mechanical engineering. 

 

“I can’t say thank you enough to Matt Kaulig and Kaulig Giving™ for their donation to the Be The Change Scholarship,” said Hemric, who drives the No. 11 Chevrolet in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Kaulig Racing. “Kenzie and I started this scholarship to help folks like us, because if not for racing, pursing a certification at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College would’ve been a great career path for me. Thanks to Kaulig Giving, this year we’re going to be able to help two students pursue that dream.”

Kaulig Racing's Justin Haley Gets 1st Xfinity Win

Justin Haley secured his first win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) last night at Talladega Superspeedway in the Unhinged 300, earning Kaulig Racing its second win of the 2020 season.

Haley, who is in his sophomore year in the NXS, as well as with Kaulig Racing, has come close to securing his first win, recording a runner-up finish and eight top-five finishes. He finally earned his first victory in his 47th start, making him just one of 32 drivers, and the second youngest, to win in all three of NASCAR’s top-tier series.

“I can’t thank Matt Kaulig and LeafFilter Gutter Protection enough for this moment that I’ve been waiting so long for,” said Haley. “Kaulig Racing has been building such fast cars all year, and my LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevy last night was no different. I’m so happy to finally get this car to victory lane for Matt (Kaulig) and everyone at LeafFilter.”

Haley’s celebration was followed by a post-race embrace with his teammates, Ross Chastain, who finished second and secured the Dash 4 Cash prize, and AJ Allmendinger, who finished 7th, capping off the 21-year-old’s victory.

Elliott Sadler’s Career Tribute Paint Scheme for Final NASCAR Race

Kaulig Racing and partner Nutrien Ag Solutions’ Surprise

Veteran driver Elliott Sadler will close out his 24-year NASCAR career behind the wheel of a well-known Sadler family paint scheme redesigned by team Kaulig Racing and partner Nutrien Ag Solutions, honoring his racing legacy. The tribute look that Sadler’s No. 10 Chevrolet will sport in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday, September 14 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was designed to resemble his first stockcar paint scheme from 1993. 

“I thought all of the surprises in my driving career had come to an end, until Kaulig Racing showed me my first ever Late Model paint scheme on the No. 10 car this weekend for what will be my final race of the year,” Sadler commented. “I’m so thankful to Nutrien Ag Solutions for allowing me to drive this car. This is the perfect paint scheme for me, personally, this weekend. It’s going to be a lot of fun to strap in one last time at a fast place like Las Vegas Motor Speedway.”

To make the weekend even more complete, Kaulig Racing’s team president Chris Rice will serve as Sadler’s crew chief, just as he did in the early 1990’s when the duo claimed the South Boston Speedway track champion title in 1995, along with multiple victories beginning in 1993.

“It’s so awesome to have Nutrien Ag Solutions allow us and join us in running this special paint scheme from Elliott’s original stockcar days,” Rice expressed. “This paint scheme means so much to not only Elliott, but to his parents Herman and Bell, his family, myself, and various other fans throughout his career. Although Nutrien Ag Solutions and Sadler have only been partnered together since 2018, the roots of their relationship have grown just as deep as those between farming and racing.

As Kaulig Racing geared up for the first race of the season in Daytona this weekend, they provided a pretty simple to understand explanation of NASCAR’s new stage based race format.

Each race will be broken down into three different stages, with playoff bonus point opportunities at the end of each stage. Take a look below to get acquainted with NASCAR’s new format quickly.

So how did the #11 of Blake Koch do yesterday?

It appeared to NASCAR Race Mom that the Kaulig Racing #11 Chevy was dialed in pretty well for the Daytona International Speedway NASCAR Xfinity Series opener.

Blake drove from the back to the front before the completion of Stage One to finish fifth and collect an important six points for the segment. Koch collected another point at the finish of Stage Two for his tenth place finish.

Blake would have finished much higher in the second segment if not for an on-track incident not of his making. Cup Driver Brad Keselowski bumped the #48 of Brennan Poole and sent him into the outside wall, collecting Blake Koch in the process. 

Unbelievable, Koch managed to pilot the now ill handling Xfinity car for the entire second half of the race to a respectable fifteenth place finish.  Kudos to the Crew Members who were able to complete repairs to the race vehicle. Blake collected another twenty-two points.

Now when you do the math:

• 22 points for race finish
•   1 point  for segment 2
•   6 points for segment 1

After all the arithmetic - Blake Koch received twenty-nine points in the Powershares QQQ 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series season opener, which was good enough to place him tied for eighth place in the point standings. With his seven stage points, Blake’s fifteenth place finish earned him the same amount of points as eighth place finisher Garrett Smithley who did not have any stage points.

It takes a bit more figuring, but it is not too complicated. Saturday's race demonstrated that it now rewarded those who were skilled and fortunate enough to avoid crashes, as only twenty of forty cars remained on the track at the conclusion of the event.

“I can’t say enough about how hard my Kaulig Racing team worked today,” said Koch. “We never gave up or let ourselves get discouraged despite having to make something close to 12 pit stops during the course of the race. We feel really good about the points we earned today and can’t wait to carry that momentum and drive into Atlanta next weekend.”

The team returns to racing action Saturday, March 4th, 2017 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
