Top-Ten at the Showdown
Sunny California did not disappoint the racing crowd at the Toyota Speedway last weekend. The weather was in the warm seventies and the crowds were passionate.While the first practice on Friday proved challenging for the #16 Hasa Pool Products/White Flyer Toyota Camry, the team’s drastic adjustments sparked optimism for the second/last practice. Their hard work was rewarded with improved lap times. Despite the tight competition (only 0.133 separated 10th position from 21st); Moses qualified in twenty-first position. He started the showdown just one place behind action sports star, Travis Pastrana.
Having successfully gained their spot in the Showdown, the team had a rare opportunity to relax together and watch the 50-lap “last chance” K&N Pro Series Qualifying race to finish up their night.
Race day started with a packed autograph session. Over 500 fans arrived early to speak to their favorite drivers and collect race memorabilia. At 8:35 p.m., Grand Marshal and NASCAR star Michael Waltrip waved the green flag to start the forty-car 225-lap K&N Pro Series Toyota All-Star main event.It did not take long for the #16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry’s strategy to go awry. On lap twenty-seven, Moses was among those involved in a multi-car accident between turns one and two. Left with nowhere to go, he t-boned his teammate, Eric Holmes.
This contact caused damaged to the front of the Camry and forced the toe out of alignment. Moses had to make two unscheduled pit stops to address the damage. Thanks to the skillful efforts of the Hasa Crew, the #16 Hasa Pool Products/White Flyer Toyota Camry rejoined the field in back of the pack, but on the lead lap.
For the remainder of the first one hundred lap segment, Moses protected his equipment as much as he could while avoiding several other crashes. The first competition pit stop afforded the crew the opportunity to complete additional repairs to the injured race car
During the long green flag runs in the second one hundred laps, Moses patiently moved up through the pack. For the start of the last twenty-five lap portion of the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, Moses took the green flag from thirteenth position.
He worked his way up to fifth place before oil from a competitor’s race vehicle made it difficult to maneuver the corners. During the last few laps of the race, caught up high and on the outside, Moses lost a crowd pleasing three-wide battle to finish the race in ninth place.
“It was a tough night, but we managed to salvage a top 10 out of it. At the end of the race, we were up to fifth. Unfortunately on that last restart, the #16 Hasa Pool Products / White Flyer Toyota got stuck behind another car that was dumping a bunch of oil. It cost us a few spots and we brought her home in ninth. What an awesome race!” Moses reported. “Thanks to all of the fans who came out or watched Team HASA on TV.”
The race lasted an hour and fifty minutes and was slowed by 11 cautions including two red flags and two competition yellows. The 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series season opener will be in conjunction with the top three national touring series at Phoenix International Raceway on February 24th.

Moses Smith - Daytona 500 of Short-Track Racing
Coming off his best season ever in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, the three-time Most Popular driver, Moses Smith is looking forward to making his fourth start in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. This year’s K&N Pro Series Showdown main event will be divided into three sections – two 100-lap segments preceding a 25-lap dash to the finish.Smith spoke enthusiastically after a recent test at the Toyota Speedway. “We tried a bunch of different stuff. There is a new body on the car and the team has spent a lot of time during their short off-season getting the car turned around!
Irwindale is an awesome facility with three grooves - the racing will be three sometimes four cars wide. It is important to have a car capable of the long run, a hundred laps, to get you close to the front; yet be ready for the twenty-five lap finish. I can’t wait to get racing next week.”

The Daytona 500 of Short-Track Racing
The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, the "Daytona 500 of short-track racing," is a great place to get noticed. David Gilliland won the 2005 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown before embarking on his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career in 2007. Joey Logano won his first NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown in 2007 that preceded his move to the NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with Joe Gibbs Racing.
This year’s K&N Pro Series Showdown main event will be broken up into three sections – two 100-lap segments preceding a 25-lap dash to the finish. Two-time winner of the Daytona 500, TV personality, and NASCAR car owner, Michael Waltrip has been tapped to take on the role of event Grand Marshal for the eighth running of the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.
At the first all-star event in 2003, Michael's brother Darrell said that the racing at Toyota Speedway was the best short track racing that he had ever seen. The expectations are for Michael, an avowed short track racing fan, to finally have an opportunity to see the progressively-banked Speedway at its best.“The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown is the premier event of our short-track calendar,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations. “From Austin Cameron’s emotional win in the very first event to last year’s dramatic debut of Sergio Pena, each successive race has continued to build the prestige of the Showdown. This all-star weekend shines the spotlight on our champions and the sport’s rising stars.”
While the 2011 NASCAR Toyota All Star Showdown entry list has not been released to date, the event is known to attract the top racers worldwide to what has become the pinnacle of short-track racing in the United States.
This post season race will mark the NASCAR debut of Travis Pastrana. Pastrana is a motorsports competitor and stunt performer who has won championships and X Games gold medals in several events, including supercross, motocross, freestyle motocross, and rally racing.
Among the international drivers expected to compete are 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 champion DJ Kennington and 2010 NASCAR Mexico Series champion Germán Quiroga. Kennington will be joined in the field by fellow Canadian Andrew Ranger, the 2007 and 2009 Canadian Tire Series champion. Quiroga will be joined by compatriots Rubén Rovelo and Daniel Suárez. Outside the NASCAR umbrella heading to California is 2010 RACECAR Euro Series champion Lucas Lasserre of France.
Steve Wallace (NASCAR Nationwide Series driver), Eric Holmes (2006, 2008, 2010 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Champion), Jason Bowles (2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Champion), Paulie Harraka (2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Sunoco Rookie of the Year), Jonathon Gomez (2010 SRL Southwest Tour Champion), and Greg Pursley (Winner of two of the final three 2010 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West races) have also announced their intentions to compete in the event.
Car owner Steve McGowan will have three drivers competing for the win. David Mayhew (second place in the 2010 K&N Pro Series West Championship), Auggie Vidovich (2010 K&N Pro Series West Race Winner) and newcomer Travis Motley.
K&N Pro Series East drivers Matt Kobyluck (Two-time Showdown winner), Darrell Wallace Jr. (Youngest race winner and first African-American Victor in series history), and Max Gresham (two 2010 race wins) are also expected to enter the race.
A NASCAR hauler parade will kick off the action on Wednesday night with a route through the San Gabriel Valley. "We expect over 50 colorful race car haulers to be a part of the pre-event activities," said Toyota Speedway GM/VP Bob DeFazio.

Both nights of racing will air live on SPEED, beginning each night at 10 p.m. ET. The coverage will be anchored by Rick Allen and Phil Parsons in the booth, with Dick Berggren and Jim Tretow covering action in the pits.

The 2011 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, the sport’s premier short-track racing showcase will return to the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.) on Jan. 28-29.
The eighth running of the event, which brings together the top racers from across North America and has grown into the ”Daytona 500 of short-track racing,” will be highlighted by the 225-lap NASCAR K&N Pro Series all-star race.

The race features secured starting spots for the 2010 champions of NASCAR’s developmental series and race winners of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series from the 2010 season. Eighteen-year-old Ryan Truex leads the field of drivers who have already earned spots, having recently wrapped up his second straight NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship.
Other drivers who have secured starting spots include NASCAR K&N Pro Series race winners Ty Dillon, Max Gresham, Paulie Harraka, Erik Holmes, Patrick Long, David Mayhew, Brett Moffitt, Andrew Ranger, Greg Pursley, Auggie Vidovich, and Darrell Wallace Jr., in addition to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion Keith Rocco and NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 champion DJ Kennington.
The schedule also includes a 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model race and a 50-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race. The top five NASCACR state champions in attendance will have secured starting spots in the Late Model race. New to this year, the 25-car fields for each of those races will be set by a pair of heat races – 25 laps for the the Super Late Models and 20 laps for the Late Models.

Caught Up in the Showdown at Toyota Speedway
Photo by Terry ThomsonBill McAnally Racing’s No 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota team and veteran NASCAR K&N Pro Series West driver Moses Smith came to the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown looking to put the Hasa entry from Bill McAnally Racing on the podium at end of the night. Shortly before the final break of the race, Smith would be caught up in an accident on the back straightaway.
Smith’s qualifying run saw the No. 16 HASA Pool Products Toyota starting the 225-lap race in 28th in the 40 car grid. At the break at lap 99, the team made some minor adjustments to the car as Smith continued to move up on the grid. By lap 142, the Hasa Toyota had moved into 18th. At lap 145, Smith brought the No. 16 Hasa Toyota to pit road to fix a flat right front tire and repair severe front end damage. “Despite the work being held thru a red flag, the Hasa team did a great job keeping me on the lead lap,” said Smith.
At lap 185, Smith got tangled up in an incident on the back stretch bringing out the 12th caution of the night and bringing the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry to the pits. Crew chief Mario Isola and the team assessed the damage and determined their race was over. Smith finished in 30th.
“Although the Showdown didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, it was actually a very good outing, in the sense that we have a better idea of what we need to work on this year” said Smith. “There was a lot of "New" heading into the showdown. The Hasa Pool Products team has under gone almost a complete revamp. We have new crew members, new Toyota Camrys, a new set up...new new new...I feel like by the time the race started, we were where we needed to be, but a ways back on the grid. Unfortunately, on lap 185 I was caught up in an accident. Wrong place at the wrong time.”

“Although the Showdown didn’t turn out the way we had hoped, it was actually a very good outing, in the sense that we have a better idea of what we need to work on this year” said Smith. “There was a lot of "New" heading into the showdown. The Hasa Pool Products team has under gone almost a complete revamp. We have new crew members, new Toyota Camrys, a new set up...new new new...I feel like by the time the race started, we were where we needed to be, but a ways back on the grid. Unfortunately, on lap 185 I was caught up in an accident. Wrong place at the wrong time.”
