Kevin Harvick – One Last Time

Kevin Harvick – One Last Time

NASCAR Veteran Straps in for Final Ride Sunday in Phoenix

Kevin Harvick – One Last Time #NASCAR

Who owns Phoenix Raceway? NASCAR or Kevin Harvick? NASCAR owns the facility, at least on paper, but Harvick owns the track.

The driver of the No. 4 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) has won a record nine Cup Series races at the desert mile. No other active Cup Series driver has won more than three races at Phoenix. Former fulltime Cup Series driver Jimmie Johnson is the closest to Harvick with four wins at the track.

Question: Phoenix marks your final race as a NASCAR Cup Series driver. What’s it like to leave while still at the top of your game?

“That’s really one of the things I’m most proud of. Somebody asked me when did I ever feel like I’ve made it. This is really the only time that I’ve ever felt like I’ve made it because I got to choose how I ended it. I know that that’s rare, and as you look at it, I got to plan my last year and say this was it, and then we were still competitive, and then we went out and did what we were supposed to do. It’s really the first time I felt comfortable saying that I’ve made it.” Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Busch Light HARVICK Ford Mustang

As his full-time NASCAR Cup Series comes to a close, Kevin Harvick will be honored by several individuals who have made an impact on his career prior to the start of the 4EVER 400 Presented by Mobil 1, Homestead-Miami Speedway announced.

Senior Advisor to NASCAR Mike Helton and Stewart-Haas Racing crew chief Rodney Childers and his family will serve as key dignitaries in getting the race started on Sunday afternoon. GRAMMY® Award-winning superstar and Trackhouse Racing co-owner Armando Christian Perez, Pitbull,  will serve as the honorary pace car official, riding along at the front of the field as the stars of the Cup Series prepare for one of the final races of the season.

“As we honor Kevin in his final race here with us at Homestead-Miami Speedway, it was only fitting that some of the people most important to him in his career join the festivities to pay tribute to his legacy,” said Al Garcia, Homestead-Miami Speedway President. “The Childers family and Mike Helton are the perfect representatives to honor Kevin’s surefire Hall of Fame career.”

Helton will serve as the Honorary Starter for the NASCAR Cup Series 4EVER 400 Presented by Mobil 1. Helton and Harvick have developed a close bond over his career, and Helton will wave the green flag as Harvick crosses the start/finish line for his final Cup Series race in South Florida.

Harvick’s crew chief Rodney Childers and his family – wife Katrina and twin sons Brody and Gavin – have been named the Grand Marshals for the event. They’ll stand alongside Harvick’s car on the grid to honor Harvick one last time at the iconic track by saying the most famous words in motorsports to signal the field to fire their engines.

Pitbull, also known as “Mr. 305” and “Mr. Worldwide,” will ride along as the pace car leads the field to green as the Honorary Pace Car Official for Sunday’s race. He recently released his new Spanglish album, TRACKHOUSE. The title is a reference to the Cup Series team Trackhouse Racing, which he joined as a co-owner in 2021.

Pitbull is currently performing alongside Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin on The Trilogy Tour, which will canvas North America throughout the fall.

All of the South Florida vibes will be felt at the track as Cedric Gervais is set to provide the pre-race entertainment, while Manu Manzo will perform the National Anthem and Puerto Rican rapper Miky Woodz will serve as the honorary event official for the race.

“It’s exciting to have a group that truly represents the vibrancy of South Florida serve as our dignitaries for the 4EVER 400 Presented by Mobil 1,” said Garcia. “Cedric Gervais will bring the party atmosphere to pump up the crowd before the race. Manu Manzo will show why she’s one of the best talents in music during her rendition of the National Anthem, and it’s wonderful to have such a popular performer as Miky Woodz join us as the honorary event official during this incredible weekend.

“And Pitbull is Mr. 305. We can’t get any more South Florida than having him help lead the field to green!”

Grammy-winning DJ and Miami Beach resident Cedric Gervais will get the party started as the pre-race entertainment during the Playoff race weekend. Gervais won a Grammy as a producer for best remix for his version of the popular Lana Del Rey song “Summertime Sadness” in 2013. He also has 5.5 million monthly listeners on Spotify and had acting roles in the films “Mile 22,” “Deepwater Horizon,” “Patriot’s Day,” and “Pain & Gain.”

Latin entertainment artist Manu Manzo, who will perform the National Anthem prior to the start of the race, was a nominee for Best New Artist at the 2015 Latin Grammy Awards. Manzo released her new album “Luna En Geminis” in May of this year.

Puerto Rican Rapper Miky Woodz will serve as the honorary event official for the 4EVER 400 Presented by Mobil 1. Woodz is most popular for his songs “Estamos Clear,” “Alcoba,” “En Lo Oscuro Sin Perse,” and “Tarde o Temprano.” He’s collaborated with other Latin, Puerto Rican, Dominican and Venezuelan artists and producers such as Bad Bunny, Wisin & Yandel, Natti Natasha, Ozuna, Noriel, Farruko, and more. Woodz also has 5.4 million monthly listeners on Spotify and is one of the biggest Latin music artists in the game today.

Homestead-Miami Speedway brings fans the ultimate summer experience in the heart of fall, with an on-site beach party at the Larry’s Hard Lemonade Beach Bash featuring water activities, beach games, and a live DJ, creating an atmosphere fans will enjoy amidst the action-packed racing. Fans can also explore the Midway, which includes all the merchandise haulers, partner activations, and more.

America's Night Race will Serve as 'Last Call' for Kevin Harvick at Iconic Bristol Motor Speedway

America's Night Race will Serve as 'Last Call' for Kevin Harvick at Iconic Bristol Motor Speedway

Harvick can boast of three Cup wins; five Xfinity Series wins and a Craftsman Truck Series win at ‘The World's Fastest Half-Mile’

Harvick can boast of three Cup wins; five Xfinity Series wins and Craftsman Truck Series win at ‘The World's Fastest Half-Mile’

Kevin Harvick has no time for being sentimental. Put the box of tissues away for now. He and his No. 4 Busch Light Stewart-Haas Racing team have work to do as they roll into Bristol Motor Speedway next weekend to complete the Round of 16 Playoffs in the NASCAR Cup Series. This is Harvick’s record 17th trip to the NASCAR postseason, a mark he shares with challenger Denny Hamlin.

Harvick has been getting going-away presents all season long as he visits tracks for the final time in his final season as a full-time driver in the Cup Series. The same will happen at BMS next weekend too, but as one of the top 16 qualifiers after a pretty consistent season where he earned 12 top-10 finishes, Harvick is after an even bigger prize: a second NASCAR Cup Series championship trophy to go with the one he earned in 2014.

Harvick has been one of the best at Bristol. He has earned three Cup Series victories on Bristol’s concrete high banks, including two in the iconic Night Race. He’s one of only five drivers in history to have wins at Bristol in all three of NASCAR’s major touring series, joining a special list that includes Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Mark Martin.

As a tribute to his greatness at the World’s Fastest Half-Mile, he is on the cover of the souvenir program for the Bass Pro Shops Night Race (7:30 p.m. ET, USA Network and PRN Radio) on Saturday night, Sept. 16. The race is the first elimination race in the Cup Playoffs, where four drivers will be eliminated when the checkered flag waves after 500 grueling laps. Harvick is hoping he isn’t one of those four. He would like to extend his “Last Call” for as long as he can. Hopefully, all the way to Phoenix.

There is an awesome cover feature story in the program written by veteran NASCAR reporter Lee Spencer that highlights Harvick’s time at Bristol.

The Bakersfield, California native tells Spencer he is anticipating another thrill ride at Bristol when they turn on the lights over the .533-mile bullring that’s been called the “Holy Grail of Short Tracks.”

“Bristol, the Night Race, especially, is a place that just has a special feel,” Harvick said. “Being a part of that event for a long time just gets you jacked up as a driver. It’s just a very intense place to race. It’s an intense place just to make laps, honestly.”

Spencer also asked Harvick’s longtime crew chief Rodney Childers what makes Harvick so good on the ultra-challenging track, which can often give drivers plenty of fits and ultimately lead to carnage and mayhem, especially when Playoff scenarios are in play.

“He’s just so disciplined there,” Childers said. “He always hits his marks. He can do the same thing every single lap. He can pinpoint certain characteristics of the race track—cracks and crevices. He’ll run 30 laps in practice and tell you every blemish, where you have to run, where you have to hit this tire. A lot of guys just go out there, run as hard as they can and don’t pay attention to anything. He pays attention and is very detailed.”

In addition to his three Cup wins at Bristol, Harvick has scored five Xfinity Series wins and also one Craftsman Truck Series win.

Given his recent history at the Night Race, he’s definitely one of the leading contenders.

“It’s been a good track for us,” said Harvick, who plans to join the FOX team in the television booth as a race analyst next season.

“Obviously, it’s changed through the years,” he continued. “For me, I stayed consistently good. I wish one wasn’t dirt. But it’s been a good track for us to score some good results on. Looking forward to going there. The Night Race is always intense—and I expect it to be the same way.”

Ryan Preece Cleared to Race at Darlington

Ryan Preece Cleared to Race at Darlington

Sunglasses Mask Two Black Eyes - #TooToughToTame

Ryan Preece has been cleared to race in this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway after his crash at Daytona International Speedway last weekend, Stewart-Haas Racing announced Friday.

Preece barrel-rolled down the back straightaway at Lap 155 of Saturday night’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona, tumbling 10 times before coming to a rest on his wheels. Preece exited the No. 41 Ford under his own power with assistance from safety workers and was kept overnight at Halifax Medical Center for further evaluation before being released the next morning.

“I’m good. It’s been quite a week, that’s for sure. But definitely, definitely really excited to have been given the OK to race this weekend at Darlington,” Preece told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Friday morning. “Because there’s nothing that I love more than my family and racing race cars. So to be able to go to Darlington this weekend and race with my 41 team, we’re excited and ready to get back out there.”

The NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs are set to begin with Sunday’s Cook Out Southern 500 (6 p.m. ET, USA, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, NBC Sports App). Preece finished 15th at the 1.366-mile oval earlier this season. Preece did not qualify for the playoffs and enters 26th in the points standings.

“I was ready to go do tests and everything on Sunday, you know, to make sure I was cleared. But we wanted to go through all the steps and we did it twice, just to make sure there were no symptoms that appeared later in the week. And everything’s good. I feel great, no concussion and I’m ready to get out there and go race,” he said. “That just goes to show the amount of work that NASCAR has really been doing to keep improving this race car and obviously having that car at the R&D Center, they’re gonna look over and continue to work to make it even safer. I’m not downplaying the wreck by any means, because it was certainly probably the biggest wreck I’ve ever taken in my career, but I’m sitting here, I’m talking to you guys right now. There’s nothing stopping me from racing this weekend. And I’m really ready to get to Darlington.”

The Connecticut native returned to full-time Cup Series action this season for the first time since 2021. He spent three seasons driving for JTG Daugherty Racing before the organization scaled back to one car for the 2022 season. Preece joined SHR during that offseason and served as the program’s simulation driver until the team opted to put him into the No. 41 Ford this year.

Preece scored his best finish of the year in the July 30 race at Richmond Raceway, where he finished fifth. He also scored a Busch Light Pole Award in the spring race at Martinsville Speedway.

Ryan Preece is a new dad as he and wife Heather welcomed their first daughter to the world August 7th.

Series Leader in Phoenix Wins

Kevin Harvick Looking for his Tenth Phoenix Raceway Win

Statistically, Phoenix Raceway is Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick’s best track, and after announcing that his retirement will be at the end of the season, he has just two chances left to become the sixth different driver in NASCAR Cup Series history to win 10 or more races at a single track.

The 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion, Kevin Harvick, returns to Phoenix Raceway as the series leader in wins at the 1-mile track with nine victories (2006 sweep, 2012 Playoff race, 2013 Playoff race, 2014 sweep, 2015 Spring race, 2016 Spring race, 2018 Spring race). Now, the 47-year-old veteran has the opportunity join an elite list of drivers with 10 or more wins at a single track - Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Jimmie Johnson, David Pearson and Dale Earnhardt.

NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty holds the NASCAR Cup Series record for the most tracks with 10 or more wins at five different tracks – Martinsville, North Wilkesboro, Richmond, Rockingham and Daytona.

Kevin Harvick To Retire at End of 2023 Season

Kevin Harvick To Retire at End of 2023 Season

The Closer’ Will Close a NASCAR Cup Series Career Spanning More Than Two Decades

Kevin Harvick To Retire at End of 2023 Season

The 2023 season will be Kevin Harvick’s 23rd and final year as a NASCAR Cup Series driver. The 47-year-old racer will retire after the season finale Nov. 5 at Phoenix Raceway.

Known as “The Closer,” Harvick begins his last season in NASCAR’s premier division tied for ninth on the Cup Series’ all-time win list with 60 point-paying victories. He is only 99 laps shy of leading a staggering 16,000 laps in his career – one of only 11 drivers in the history of the sport to do so – and the Bakersfield, California-native is slated to make his 800th career Cup Series start April 23 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

“There is absolutely nothing else in the world that I enjoy doing more than going to the racetrack, and I’m genuinely looking forward to this season,” said Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing. “But as I’ve gone through the years, I knew there would come a day where I had to make a decision. When would it be time to step away from the car?

“I’ve sought out people and picked their brains. When I asked them when they knew it was the right time, they said it’ll just happen, and you’ll realize that’s the right moment. You’ll make a plan and decide when it’s your last year.

“It’s definitely been hard to understand when that right moment is because we’ve been so fortunate to run well. But sometimes there are just other things going on that become more important and, for me, that time has come.”

Harvick’s decision to make the 2023 season his last comes as the father of two eyes more family time. Together with wife, DeLana,  they’ll continue to visit racetracks, but Harvick won’t be wearing a firesuit. His 10-year-old son, Keelan, is an avid karter who races internationally, and his 5-year-old daughter, Piper, is already following in the family’s tire tracks, wheeling a go-kart of her own.

Harvick Family - DeLana, Keelan, Kevin, & Piper

“In the last year, I think I’ve seen Keelan race three times while he’s been in Europe. I go to the go-kart track with Piper and she makes twice as many strides in a day while I’m there than she would in a day when I’m not there. It takes a lot of time to organize the level of racing they’re doing, and to be around that is important to me,” Harvick said.

Karting is where Harvick’s career began. He was five when he first started racing in and around Southern California. Twenty years later, after competing and winning on the NASCAR Southwest Tour, earning the 1998 NASCAR Winston West championship, advancing to the NASCAR Truck Series and then the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Harvick was in Cup. However, it was under incredibly trying circumstances and immense pressure.

A 25-year-old Harvick was thrust into the national spotlight and tabbed to do the impossible – fill the void left by the passing of the sport’s icon, Dale Earnhardt. A crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500 had taken Earnhardt’s life. In the midst of great personal sorrow, team owner Richard Childress needed to steady his organization. He chose Harvick, an up-and-coming racer who had a breakout season in 2000 by winning three races for his team in the second-tier Busch Series, known today as the Xfinity Series.

The No. 3, made famous by Earnhardt, was changed to the No. 29, and Harvick made his Cup Series debut on Feb. 25 at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham. Harvick started 36th that Sunday at Rockingham, but rain washed over the track just 51 laps into the 393-lap race. The race resumed at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, whereupon Harvick drove to a solid 14th-place finish. He then traveled to Las Vegas on Tuesday, got married on Wednesday, and was back in a racecar on Friday, competing in both the Xfinity Series and Cup Series events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After finishing eighth on Sunday to score his first career top-10 in the Cup Series, Harvick headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway where on March 11, 2001 the first of his 60 Cup Series wins was secured in just his third career start.

“Dale’s passing changed our sport forever, and it changed my life forever and the direction it took. It took me a long time to really get comfortable to really even think about things that happened that day,” Harvick said.

“Looking back on it now, you realize the importance of getting in the Cup car, and then we wound up winning my first race at Atlanta in the 29 car after Dale’s death. The significance and the importance of keeping that car on the racetrack and winning that race early at Atlanta – knowing now what it meant to the sport, and just that moment in general of being able to carry on, was so important.”

Wise beyond his age, Harvick was able to compartmentalize and perform. In addition to running the remainder of the Cup Series schedule and winning again on July 15 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, Harvick ran the entire Xfinity Series schedule, winning five races and cruising to the championship.

“We just found a way to make it work, and that’s what we did all year long,” said Harvick, who won a second Xfinity Series title in 2006, again running the full Cup and Xfinity schedules.

Making it work is what Harvick has done throughout his career. This was evident from day one at Stewart-Haas Racing,  where he joined the team in December 2013 after spending 14 seasons with Childress.

Teamed with crew chief Rodney Childers, Harvick came out of the gate strong and never let up. It began with a dominating preseason test at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway and ended with an emphatic victory in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway that earned Harvick his long coveted Cup Series championship.

Today, Harvick and Childers are the longest-tenured active driver-crew chief pairing in the Cup Series garage, a 10-year partnership that has netted 37 points-paying wins.

“Rodney and I are pretty much the same age with very similar backgrounds, as far as racing goes. But we’re kind of opposites in that he’s very calm, cool and quiet, and I’m kind of rambunctious and full of excitement. That pairing has brought a lot of respect just because I know his demeanor, he knows my demeanor, and it’s a good balance in the middle,” Harvick said.

“We know each of us can do the job, and we believe in that and each other, and a lot of that comes down to conversations, being able to communicate. We communicate well, and that’s what makes a good pairing – being able to talk and communicate and put those conversations into action. And when you’re wrong, understanding when you’re wrong, and working through that and not have anybody’s feelings get hurt and start pointing fingers That’s what’s made it work.”

The command Harvick has shown behind the wheel and outside of the racecar was one of the main reasons why Tony Stewart, co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, wanted Harvick on his race team.

“I competed against Kevin for a long time and I was so happy to finally have him a part of our race team,” said Stewart, the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion who co-owns Stewart-Haas Racing with Haas Automation founder Gene Haas. “He’s incredibly reliable – consistent and calculated on the track with a drive to always be better. That’s what you want in a teammate. He knows what he needs to be successful, and his will to win helped elevate our entire company.”

Stewart retired as a NASCAR driver at the end of the 2016 season. His hope for Harvick’s final season is sanguine and straightforward.

“I want Kevin to savor every lap this season, to compete like hell and to take it all in. He’s made all of us at Stewart-Haas Racing incredibly proud and we want to make his last season his best season.”

Harvick’s final season kicks off with the non-points Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum Feb. 4-5 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before the official start of the 2023 campaign with the 65th annual Daytona 500 Feb. 19 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

Familiar Names Complete Stewart-Haas Racing’s 2023 Crew Chief Lineup in Cup and Xfinity

Familiar Names Complete Stewart-Haas Racing’s 2023 Crew Chief Lineup in Cup and Xfinity

Chad Johnston Returns to SHR as Crew Chief for Ryan Preece and No. 41 Cup Team; Jonathan Toney Promoted to Crew Chief for Cole Custer and No. 00 Xfinity Team

While the 2023 crew chief lineup for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) remains mostly intact from last year, two familiar names join the crew chief ranks for the team’s 15th NASCAR season.

Chad Johnston, who served as crew chief for driver and team co-owner Tony Stewart in 2014-2015, has returned to SHR to be the crew chief for driver Ryan Preece and the No. 41 team in the NASCAR Cup Series. And with SHR’s expanded two-car effort in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Jonathan Toney has been promoted from engineer to crew chief for driver Cole Custer and the No. 00 team.

“In Chad Johnston and Jonathan Toney, we’ve got two guys who are hungry to win that also bring a lot of smarts and experience to each of their roles,” said Greg Zipadelli, chief competition officer, SHR. “Both are very familiar with our program and our people.

“It’s great to have Chad back with our race team. A lot of the people he worked with when he was here before are still here today, and he already has a rapport with Ryan Preece. Chad fits in seamlessly and has a tremendous work ethic.

“Jonathan has been a workhorse and his fingerprints are on a lot of the success this team has enjoyed. He’s been here since the very beginning and knows this place inside and out. Jonathan has definitely earned this opportunity and all of us are proud to see him take on this new role.”

Johnston is from Cayuga, Indiana, and graduated from Indiana State University in 2003 with a degree in mechanical engineering. Before his first stint at SHR, Johnston spent 2004-2005 in the NASCAR Truck Series. He moved to Cup in 2006 with Evernham Motorsports and stayed there until 2009 when he joined Michael Waltrip Racing. It was there in 2011 when Johnston was promoted from engineer to crew chief for driver Martin Truex Jr. The two were paired for 95 races, earning a win, two poles, 17 top-fives and 43 top-10s, numbers that earned Johnston his first stint at SHR. After working with Stewart for two seasons, Johnston was recruited by team owner Chip Ganassi to be the crew chief for driver Kyle Larson in 2016. In five seasons with Ganassi, Johnston and Larson won six races together. Johnston returned to the Truck Series in 2021 with David Gilliland Racing and it’s where he first worked with Preece, winning a Truck Series race with him at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway in 2021.

Toney is one of the most tenured members of SHR. The Newton, North Carolina-native joined Haas CNC Racing in December 2003, five years before Stewart partnered with Haas Automation founder Gene Haas to form SHR on the underpinnings of Haas CNC Racing. Toney is a 1996 graduate of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and, like Johnston, holds a mechanical engineering degree. Toney was the lead engineer for Stewart and the No. 14 team from 2009 through 2012, helping secure Stewart his third NASCAR Cup Series championship in 2011 and the first for SHR. Toney remained an engineer at SHR, assisting the organization across its Cup and Xfinity Series programs, spending considerable time with Custer during his three previous years in the Xfinity Series from 2017 through 2019. The 2023 season marks Toney’s first as a crew chief.

The rest of SHR’s crew chief lineup remains unchanged across its Cup and Xfinity Series teams.

Rodney Childers, crew chief for the No. 4 team, will begin his 10th year atop the pit box for driver Kevin Harvick. The Harvick/Childers duo is the longest-tenured active driver-crew chief pairing in the NASCAR Cup Series garage, a partnership that has netted 37 points-paying wins and the 2014 championship.

John Klausmeier remains the crew chief for the No. 14 team and Chase Briscoe. Klausmeier helped Briscoe secure the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series rookie-of-the-year title and he delivered Briscoe a victory in just the driver’s 40th career start – March 13, 2022 at Phoenix Raceway. The 2023 season will mark Klausmeier’s sixth season as a crew chief, all of which have come with SHR (2018-2019 with driver Aric Almirola and 2020 with driver Clint Bowyer).

Drew Blickensderfer took over as crew chief for Almirola and the No. 10 team in 2022 and he returns in 2023. It will mark his third full season being paired with Almirola. Blickensderfer served as his crew chief while they were together at Richard Petty Motorsports for the last few races of 2016 and then all of 2017 before Almirola departed for SHR in 2018.

Richard Boswell has been the main steward of SHR’s Xfinity Series program since its inception in 2017 and he will continue in that capacity in 2023. He will again serve as crew chief for driver Riley Herbst and the No. 98 team. Boswell has been the crew chief for nine of SHR’s 21 Xfinity Series wins and has placed his driver in the NASCAR Playoffs for four straight seasons (2019-2020 with Briscoe and 2021-2022 with Herbst).

Riley Herbst Takes Busman Holiday at the SRL “All-Star Showdown 200

Stewart-Haas Racing NASCAR Xfinity driver Riley Herbst will make the trek from Charlotte, NC to Irwindale Speedway (CA) for the $25,000-to-win “All-Star Showdown 200” on February 5th. The Las Vegas, NV native will return to a track at which he spent several seasons cutting his teeth in Late Models and Super Trucks. He will also reunite with an old friend from his early days of racing in Southern California, on a busman’s holiday for the 22-year-old NASCAR star.

“Honestly, I love what I do driving in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, but we are about to head to Daytona, and it is an absolute grind for 33 weeks, with a few off weekends”, Herbst explained. “My good buddy R.J. (Johnson) texted me and asked me if I wanted to come out and run the Super Late Model. I haven’t been in a Super Late Model in almost six years, so it will be the first time for me in quite some time in a Super. But more than anything, it’s about coming out and having fun. Just hanging out at the racetrack and not having the high intensity stress, like you do in a week in week out basis in the Xfinity Series.”

The two-time winner in the ARCA Menards National Series will be behind the wheel of a Hamke Racecar Super Late Model out of the Earl Robbins / Linny White Racing stables. It is a car that has seen success with White behind the wheel in both SRL and open Super Late Model competition. White finished as the championship runner-up in the series in 2019 with this car, winning two races that season. He joined Preston Peltier and Jeremy Doss as the only competitors to defeat Derek Thorn heads up that season. He finished the 2020 season fourth in the standings, after missing an event, but added another win to the car’s resume, beating Thorn at Irwindale. The team also fields cars for 2021 All American Speedway Late Model champion John Moore, with 2021 seeing the Granite Bay, CA driver with a career high three top-five finishes in SRL competition.

R.J. Johnson will be the Crew Chief for this effort and has extensive experience in the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series. He has been a fixture behind the wrenches in the SRL having performed the Crew Chief duties for drivers such as 2017 Rookie-of-the-Year Ricky Schlick and 2019 Rookie-of-the-Year Tyler Fabozzi as well as Linny White. He has also been behind the wheel himself, earning championships in the Super Late Models, Late Models and Super Trucks at Irwindale Speedway. Johnson was the nexus of the deal to bring Herbst out to California and race with the Earl Robbins / Linny White Racing Team.

“Riley and I met when he raced Super Trucks and Late Models out here at Irwindale many years back”, Johnson recalled. “We tried to stay in touch when we could. About 2-1/2 years ago, while I was in North Carolina, we ran into each other and that’s when our friendship started to expand. Since then, all we have talked about is trying to do some races together, but with his busy schedule and my racing commitments, it’s never panned out. When the opportunity came up, he was the first one I reached out to! So, to say I was excited when he said, “he’s in”, would be an understatement! Not only because of his talent behind the wheel, giving us a great shot at running upfront, but also to finally have the opportunity to work together. It’s going to be a blast.”

Herbst has finished in the top dozen in championship standings over the last couple of seasons in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He had a career best finish of second at both Auto Club Speedway (CA) and Kentucky Speedway (CA) in 2020. He has nine top-five’s and 30 top-10 finishes over those last two seasons, nearly reaching the 50% mark in the later stat. He scored his first career pole in 2021, when he turned the trick at Charlotte Motor Speedway (NC) in the 2021 “Alsco Uniforms 300” on Coca Cola 600 weekend. He comes into this event with consecutive top-10’s including a fourth-place finish at Phoenix Raceway (AZ).

Prior to his Xfinity experience, Herbst ran for Rookie-of-the-Year in the ARCA Menards Pro Series West in 2016, finishing seventh in the overall standings. He participated in the ARCA Menards National Tour in 2017 and 2018, finishing top-five both seasons. 2019 found Herbst running partial schedules in the ARCA Menards Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series. But despite his busy racing schedule, it has been since 2016 since he has competed in a Super Late Model. With his experience at Irwindale, that circumstance is what Herbst feels will be his biggest test, to his participation in the rich event.

“The biggest challenge for me will just be getting back to being used to the Super Late Model”, Herbst acknowledged. “Irwindale is one of my favorite racetracks. The Super will be challenging, but we are gonna have quite a few practice sessions. Hopefully we can knock the rust off and be competitive.”

Herbst will certainly have the opportunity to be competitive with a race winning car, race winning organization and an experienced crew with Johnson and White heading the effort. The crew will be top notch as they have been with Johnson since his days Ricky Schlick. Johnson is excited for the upcoming race weekend with a rare weekend off from his regular SRL duties.

“I will have 99% of my track crew from the Ricky Schlick days, plus adding on the experience of having Linny White prepping and setting up the Hamke Racecar, and lastly Earl Robbins giving us top notch equipment to go out and contend for a win”, Johnson described. “For me it’s my whole racing family from east to west coming together for one weekend and one common goal. I really can’t wait to get to work!”

Herbst knows he will have his hands full with around 40 Super Late Model teams expected for the event. There are race winning teams up and down the entry list, with some of the best Super Late Model talent in the country expected. But he will have his eyes on one particular competitor, whose path he has never crossed on the racetrack.

“Honestly, I don’t think I’ve raced against Derek (Thorn) before, but I have great respect for him and I always pull for him in the big “Super” races, just because he is from the West Coast. I always love to see West Coasters race on the East Coast in the big races. I’m a big Derek Thorn fan. I’m excited just to come out and have fun before the season starts.”

The normal #99 of the Earl Robbins / Linny White Super Late Model will be renumbered to the #98, which is more familiar to Herbst. The car will have a similar look to his Stewart-Haas Motorsports ride, with hopes of another top-five or his first SRL win. Herbst is thankful for the opportunity he has to return to Southern California and get back behind the wheel of a Super Late Model.

“It is gonna be a black racecar, but I want to thank R.J. and Ford Performance as well as long-time sponsor Monster Energy Drink”, Herbst declared. “It’s a low-key deal, just coming out to have some fun before the season starts.”

The “All-Star Showdown 200” will take place on February 5th at Irwindale Speedway. It will kick off the 22nd season for the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour and the second for the SPEARS Pro Late Models presented by Sigma Performance Services. The SPEARS Modified Series will take part in their second event of the season, after Jaron Giannini won the opener at Havasu 95 Speedway. The Super Late Models will race for $25,000-to-win. The Pro Late Models will compete for $10,000-to-win and the SPEARS Modified Series will shoot for $5,000.

Celebrating its twenty-second season in 2022, the SPEARS Southwest Tour Series is a regional stock car series competing on paved ovals in the southwestern portion of the U.S. “The SPEARS Southwest Tour Series…Where the Champions Race”.

Almirola Spins Backwards to a 3rd Place Finish

Almirola Spins Backwards to a 3rd Place Finish

Driver of the No. 10 @SmithfieldBrand car for @StewartHaasRcng

Aric Almirola Spins Backwards to a 3rd Place Finish (#NASCAR)

Nothing is quite as entertaining to the undersigned than a NASCAR Driver battling for P1 at the checkered flag, only to get spun and cross the Start/Finish backwards still on podium!!! Well that is what racing veteran Aric Almirola accomplished yesterday in the ‘GEICO’ 500 at the 2.66 mile Oval, Talladega Superspeedway.

Yeah, so close with our Smithfield Ford Mustang. We had the strategy of kind of riding around surviving most of the race. We didn't race very aggressively early on in the race. As the laps wound down, I got to the front, then I got shuffled. Right there on that restart we found ourselves back in position. We had a really fast Ford Mustang.

I thought when everybody started getting stacked up on the front straightaway, I was shooting for whatever hole was open, kind of ping-ponging, weaving my way through there. I got all the way to the front row. I saw the 12 and 20 side-by-side side drafting, had a big head of steam on them. Honestly thought that I was going to get to the start/finish line before them.

When I crossed through the tri-oval, I thought we were going to win the race, I was going so much faster than they were. I just barely got clipped by I think the 47 and spun across the start/finish line, ended up third.

I'm happy to finish top five another week in a row. Felt like we were really close to winning that one. #10 Aric Almirola

Aric started the race fifteenth on the grid and finished third in race thirteen of thirty-six. He stands twelfth in the points.

Race Cap:

Stage 1 (Laps 1-60):
  • ● Aric Almirola started 15th and finished 25th.
  • ● After racing three wide in the first 10 laps, Almirola decided to drop out of the lead pack to avoid potential contact.
  • ● He pitted the No. 10 Smithfield Ford after the competition caution on lap 27 for four tires, fuel and adjustments.
  • ● The red flag was waved on lap 57 due to inclement weather.
  • ● When racing resumed, Almirola pitted at the end of the stage for four fresh tires and fuel.

Stage 2 (Laps 61-120):
  • ● Almirola started 19th and finished 25th.
  • ● The No. 10 Ford Mustang driver raced back to the top-10 on lap 65.
  • ● Almirola raced his way to the top-five on lap 75.
  • ● Almirola moved to the high line on lap 85, but was demoted out of the lead pack with no push from behind.
  • ● He pitted under caution on lap 97 for four tires and fuel to restart 20th.
  • ● Almirola pitted on lap 115 for four tires and fuel. He pit again to restart 31st for the two-lap shootout. He pitted for fuel only at the end of the stage and gained 17 positions.

Final Stage (Laps 121-191):
  • ● Almirola started 11th and finished third.
  • ● Almirola pitted after a lap-133 caution for four tires and fuel to restart 21st.
  • ● The No. 10 Ford pitted again on lap 145 under another caution for fuel only. He restarted 11th.
  • ● Almirola raced up to third after the restart.
  • ● He charged towards the lead with six laps to go, but was left in the outside lane with no help and fell to 21st.
  • ● The caution was called with three laps to go. Almirola was told he was good on fuel and stayed out of the pits to restart 11th.
  • ● The caution was called on lap 187 to put the race in overtime. Almirola did not pit.
  • ● On the final overtime lap, Almirola wedged his Smithfield Ford into the middle lane and had a run to potentially take the checkered flag. When he turned to block the No. 47 car he was contacted in the left rear, sending the car spinning and crossing the finish line backwards.

The Briscoe Family Suffers a Miscarriage

The Briscoe Family Suffers a Miscarriage
Chase with Wife Marissa Briscoe during happier times. #NASCAR

Chase David Wayne Briscoe is an American professional stock car racing driver. He currently competes full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the No. 98 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing with Fred Biagi.

Chase is just twenty-five years old; so most would consider him a 'kid.' However, this athlete had to deal with a grown-up tragedy yesterday.

Briscoe was at Darlington Raceway preparing for a race and watching the events unfold at home over FaceTime as a sonogram machine was brought in to double-check.

“As I watched the doctor do all the stuff on the ultra sound I’ll never forget when she said “Now for the heartbeat” and then the empty black screen I saw and hearing her say “I’m so sorry,” Briscoe wrote. "It was like time stopped, nothing else even mattered."
NRM's positive thoughts and prayers are with the Briscoe family during this difficult time.

Ford Performance wins at Phoenix Raceway with Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick coming in first and second. Logano drove the Team Penske Pennzoil Mustang to Team Penske’s 122nd NASCAR Cup Series race win while recording a milestone 200th win for the Ford FR9 engine, since it’s racing debut in 2009 with Ford Performance and Roush Yates Engines.

After several late-race cautions, it came down to an over-time, two-lap shootout between Ford Performance teammates, Logano and Harvick.

“Congratulations to Joey, Paul, Roger, and the No. 22 crew,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “Anytime a Ford wins is special, but today is even sweeter, winning our 200th with Ford Performance and the Ford FR9 engine. I’m so proud of our team at our shops, they put their hearts and souls into these engines. We are thankful to everyone at Ford Performance for their commitment and partnership as well as our Ford Performance racing teams."

After several late-race cautions, it came down to an over-time, two-lap shootout between Ford Performance teammates, Logano and Harvick. Logano, in the P1 position, lined up on the inside of Harvick. Logano had a great restart and was able to take the lead over Harvick and control the race, holding the No. 4 off, taking the white flag .276 seconds ahead of Harvick.

“We learned that this No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford team is just stout and is not going to get beat if we have the opportunity,” commented Logano in Victory Lane.

“We learned that this No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford team is just stout and is not going to get beat if we have the opportunity,” commented Logano in Victory Lane. “We tried everything we could to regain our track position and get control back of the race. I knew that last restart was going to be crazy. I have to thank my partners, Moneyline, Auto Trader, AAA, Ford, Coca Cola, Snap on, everybody that helps this program at Team Penske. Roush Yates motors {Engines}. It was cool to see two Fords on the front row at the end of a race like that. This is a motor racetrack as much as we don't think it is. Proud of the team effort today.”

The Ford teams led a combined 210 laps out of the 316-lap race. The Stage 2 winner, Brad Keselowski led for a total of 82 laps while the Stage 1 winner, Harvick led 67 laps. They were followed by race winner, Logano with 60 and Roush Fenway Racing’s Chris Buescher with one lap.
