Josh Berry Scores First Career Cup #Win at Las Vegas

Winning an intense battle against Daniel Suárez after a restart with 19 laps left, Josh Berry pulled away to a convincing victory in Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The win was Berry’s first in the NASCAR Cup Series at a track where he won twice in a NASCAR Xfinity Series car. Berry is the fourth straight Wood Brothers Racing driver to pick up his first Cup win in the No. 21 Ford.

“Oh, man, I don’t even know what to think,” Berry said after climbing from his car on the frontstretch. “Just awesome. I love this track. Las Vegas has been so good to me. So many great moments here.

“Just struggled in the Next Gen car here. But (crew chief) Miles (Stanley) and this whole 21 team, everybody at Wood Brothers Racing, they gave me a great car today. Just battled and battled and battled. Man, it was our day. I just can’t believe it.

“Such a battle with Daniel there at the end, beating and banging on a mile-and-a-half — crazy! Whoever was going to get out front was probably going to win. We were able to get in front.”

Justin Allgaier Prevails

Justin Allgaier Prevails

On Friday night, Justin Allgaier saw the Eagles in concert. On Saturday, he was flying.

Holding off Aric Almirola over a 102-lap green-flag run, Allgaier finally claimed victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway after finishing second four times at the 1.5-mile track.

Allgaier’s victory in The LiUNA! was his first of the season, the 26th of his career and the 90th for JR Motorsports in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The reigning series champion crossed the finish line 1.067 seconds ahead of Almirola, who lost ground trying to run the outside lane with just over three laps left.v

With the victory, Allgaier qualified for the first Dash 4 Cash race next Saturday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, along with third-place finisher Jesse Love, fourth-place Austin Hill and fifth-place Sam Mayer. The highest finisher among the four earns a $100,000 bonus.

“It was amazing,” said Allgaier. “This whole team — I just can’t say enough. Aric and I were going at it. Hats off to him; he ran a heck of a race…

“Rick Brandt (of sponsor Brandt) was here last night. He took us to a great concert, Eagles concert … Everyone at JR Motorsports, I can’t say enough about how proud I am of what we have here. It’s been special.”

Pole: Sammy Smith

Corey Heim Holds Off Grant Enfinger for #Win

Corey Heim made a mistake on pit road, but his crew picked up the slack when it counted.

A lightning-fast stop under caution on Lap 86 put Heim in the lead, and that was the impetus the driver of the No. 11 Tricon Garage Toyota needed to win Friday night’s Ecosave 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

The stellar work of the pit crew allowed Heim to overcome a pit road speeding penalty he incurred at the end of the first stage on Lap 31.

“First of all, the pit crew did such a good job of getting the truck up front,” said Heim, who won his second race of the season, his first at LVMS and the 13th of his career. “I made that mistake in Stage 1 when I sped on pit road and put us behind.”

“This wasn’t exactly what we wanted in terms of the weather being cold and whatnot,” Heim said. “It seems to be a lot better when it’s hot and greasy, and we’re sliding around.

“I was doing everything I can there. I think all of us were completely wide open at the end. I spent a lot of time looking at my mirror, and it worked out.”

Josh Berry Speaks About His Relationship with Rodney Childers

Josh Berry Speaks About His Relationship with Rodney Childers

Kevin Harvick's replacement and Crew Chief Have Good Relationship

Josh Berry Speaks About His Relationship with Rodney Childers

Josh Berry has big shoes to fill as he is set to drive the #4 SHR Ford next season, teaming up with Kevin Harvick's  longtime crew chief Rodney Childers.

Berry worked with Childers in the South Carolina 400 Late Model race, building up for the 2024 season. He finished a respectable fourth in the event. Speaking about his bond with the #4 crew chief, he told Frontstretch:

"I think we're still figuring that out but Roddy and I have had a good relationship for years. Obviously, there's not anybody else that I'd want calling the shots for me in the cup series, getting to do this stuff together is just kind of a bonus. He's put a lot of hours into this car and it's been really fast. So we're just going to try to keep on getting better."

In ninety-five (95) Xfinity Series Starts, Josh earned five wins and twenty-eight top five finishes. Berry’s best NASCAR Cup finish was a second-place finish on April 2, 2023. He was the beneficiary of a late caution in the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway alongside teammate Kyle Larson. Thanks to a few lightning-fast pit stops, the 5 and 9 came out first and second and finished there.

Kevin Harvick will be in the Fox Booth next season as he begins his post-retirement journey.

South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway

South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway

Entry list, live stream, more for 2023 race featuring Dale Earnhardt Jr., other NASCAR stars

South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway

Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr. is getting used to racing his Late Model Stock Car at Florence Motor Speedway. Having finished ninth in last year’s South Carolina 400 at the NASCAR Home Track, the 49-year-old during Saturday’s edition of the race will have his third chance at a Florence victory in 2023.

Earnhardt is included on the loaded entry list for this year’s South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway (Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET on FloRacing). He finished sixth in the track’s Locked In 150 a couple months ago to secure his place in the 250-lap feature. Earnhardt also ran Florence’s Icebreaker in February, when he logged a 16th-place finish.

Today’s South Carolina 400 figures to be another action-packed show one year after Late Model Stock star Brenden “Butterbean” Queen took the checkered flag in what was his debut race with Lee Pulliam Performance. Queen is back for 2023, as is Carson Kvapil, the JR Motorsports driver whom Queen outlasted for last year’s win.

After winning the Locked In 150 in September, South Carolina short-track racing veteran Sam Yarbrough will start the 2023 South Carolina 400 from the pole position.

That’s all we know ahead of a long day of practice and qualifying Saturday as more than 40 Late Model Stock Car competitors look to add a Florence crown jewel to their trophy cases that evening.

Pre-race ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. ET, immediately followed by feature racing. Twin Late Model heat races will begin the feature action, followed by the Street Stock and Mini Stock races. The 250-lap Late Model feature will close the night.

Entry list

Dale Earnhardt Jr. headlines the entry list for today’s South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway. But the NASCAR legend’s Hall of Fame credentials will do little to help him against a stacked field of Late Model Stock Car aces.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. headlines the entry list for Saturday’s South Carolina 400 at Florence Motor Speedway.

For example, Earnhardt will race against the driver who delivered JR Motorsports the 2020 NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series national championship. Josh Berry, who will drive the No. 4 Ford Mustang in the NASCAR Cup Series next season for Stewart-Haas Racing, will pilot Kevin Harvick’s late model at Florence.

Last year’s SC 400 front-runners Brenden Queen and Carson Kvapil are back in the field for 2023. As are talented late model drivers William Sawalich, Kaden Honeycutt, Doug Barnes Jr., Katie Hettinger, Kade Brown, Carter Langley, Brandon Pierce, Ryan Glenski, Landon Huffman, Josh Williams and Stephen Nasse, to name a few.

JR Motorsports Xfinity Team Preview

'Andy's Frozen Custard 300' at TMS

  • TRACK: Texas Motor Speedway
  • RACE: Andy's Frozen Custard 300 (200 laps / 300 miles)
  • DATE: Saturday September 23, 2023
  • TV: 3:30 p.m. ET on USA
  • RADIO: 3 p.m. ET on PRN Radio and SiriusXM Ch. 90

Sam Mayer - JR Motorsports
Sam Mayer

Sam Mayer heads west to Texas Motor Speedway for his fourth start at the 1.5-mile track and the second race of the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. The Franklin, Wis. native has scored one top-five and two top-10 efforts at the quad-oval with his best of third coming in the spring of 2022. Mayer's average finish at the Fort Worth facility is 8.0. He currently sits 10th in points, a mere 14 markers out of the cutoff spot with two races remaining. Mayer's Chevrolet will be carrying the blue and black colors of Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions on the No. 1 entry.

Sam Mayer: "Texas is another one of my better tracks and I'm looking forward to having a chance to get our momentum going in the right direction. We have had really fast cars these past few weeks but not a whole lot of luck, so hopefully we can turn that around this weekend in Texas and make some gains."

Justin Allgaier - JR Motorsports
Justin Allgaier

By virtue of last weekend's victory at Bristol Motor Speedway, Justin Allgaier has advanced into the Round of 8 in the NXS Playoffs for the eighth consecutive season. The Illinois native has gone to Victory Lane in two of the last four races (Daytona and Bristol). In 25 NXS starts at Texas, Allgaier has scored five top fives and 13 top 10s. Allgaier has placed fourth or better in three of the last four starts at the 1.5-mile quad-oval, equating to a 3.3 average finish in those three events. His best effort was a runner-up finish in 2021.

Justin Allgaier: "We have been really strong at Texas the past couple of seasons, and I know that we will have that same speed again this weekend. Having already advanced into the next round of the playoffs is a great feeling and it really gives us an opportunity to take some chances that some of the other guys are not able to. Hopefully we will be able to execute the same way we have been and be up front going for the win and those extra playoff points when it counts on Saturday with our Reese's Ice Cream / Sam's Club Chevrolet."

Josh Berry - JR Motorsports
Josh Berry

Josh Berry heads to Texas needing to gain 24 points on the line for advancement with two races yet to run in the Round of 12. In three previous starts on the 1.5-mile quad-oval, Berry's best finish is sixth, coming in this race last season. He has a pair of top-10 results in three starts and has led 46 laps there. On race tracks measuring 1.5 miles in NXS competition, Berry has three of his five victories, six top-five and 13 top-10 finishes and has led a combined 293 laps in 23 total starts. He is a previous winner at Las Vegas (twice) and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Josh Berry: "We've run well at Texas in the past and there's no reason we can't continue that this weekend. This JARRETT team is working hard to make sure we unload with the speed we are capable of having. With the resin on the track, the line is going to change and we need to be ready for that to happen in order to put ourselves in a situation to score stage points throughout the day. I'm confident that we will be in contention Saturday as long as we put it all together."

Brandon Jones - JR Motorsports
Brandon Jones

Brandon Jones qualified on the pole in this event at Texas last season. The effort marked his seventh of eight career poles in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. At tracks measuring 1-2 miles in length in the NXS, Jones has recorded four wins, 19 top fives and 56 top 10s, while leading the field for a total of 377 laps . Jones has notched a pair of top 10s and an average finish of 7.5 when carrying Pelonis branding on the hood of the Menards Chevrolet in 2023.

Brandon Jones: "We have had a lot of speed as of late and I know this team is making sure that speed carries over to this weekend. I thought we had a car capable of winning last week and this No. 9 bunch has run up front at Texas more than not, so I'm confident that we will be near the front this weekend and hopefully battling for the win."

JRM's No. 9 team is the defending winner of this event. Last year the team qualified second and led 85 laps en route to its second overall victory in the Lonestar State.

Noah Gragson Suspended by Team

Noah Gragson Suspended by Team

Josh Berry to Race the #42 Legacy Motor Club Entry

Legacy Motor Club said Saturday that Noah Gragson had been suspended for Sunday’s race at Michigan for “actions that do not represent the values of our team.”

Gragson will be replaced by Josh Berry in the No. 42 car for Sunday’s race. Berry — who will replace Kevin Harvick at Stewart-Haas Racing in 2024 — succeeded Gragson in the No. 9 Xfinity Series car at JR Motorsports when Gragson moved up to the Cup Series in 2023.

“I am disappointed in myself for my lack of attention and actions on social media,” Gragson wrote. “I understand the severity of this situation. I love and appreciate everyone. I try to create everyone equally no matter who they are. I messed up plain and simple.”

Apparently, the twenty-five-year-old Gragson liked an Instagram meme mocking the 2020 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Gragson is currently in thirty-third place in the 2023 point standings with no top ten finishes. He is second out of two rookies illegible for the Sunoco Rookie of The Year standings.

JR Motorsports Revamps Crew Chief Lineup

JR Motorsports Revamps Crew Chief Lineup

Updated Roles, New Hires

JR Motorsports Revamps Crew Chief Lineup - Updated Roles, New Hires

JR Motorsports has revamped its crew chief roster for the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, the organization announced today. MoyerReturning veterans Jason Burdett and Taylor will assume crew chief duties with the Nos. 9 and 8 entries, respectively, while the addition of Jim Pohlman on the No. 7 and Mardy Lindley with the No. 1 team completes the crew chief lineup.

Entering his ninth season with JRM, Burdett is the company's winningest crew chief with 18 victories. Burdett, who led Justin Allgaier to Championship 4 appearances in five of the last seven seasons, will transition to the No. 9 Menards team with JRM's newest driver Brandon Jones. Through his first eight years with the company, Burdett racked up an impressive 110 top-five and 183 top-10 finishes.

Moyer moves to the No. 8 team with driver Josh Berry for 2023 to fill the role vacated by Mike Bumgarner, now serving as JRM’s director of competition. In 2019-20, Moyer served as crew chief of JRM’s No. 8 Chevrolet and its rotating roster of drivers. He has spent the past two seasons atop the pit box for Berry and Sam Mayer, leading Mayer to 12 top fives, 25 top 10s and a playoff berth through to the Round of 8 in 2022.

"As successful as 2022 was for JR Motorsports, we're always asking ourselves 'how can we be better?'" said Bumgarner, JRM's director of competition. "While we performed at a very high level this season, a tweak here or there can help push you even further. We were fortunate to bring in Jim (Pohlman) and Mardy (Lindley). Both have past success with their drivers and we expect that will aid in making a smooth transition."

A native of Oak Lawn, Illinois, the 43-year-old Pohlman comes to JRM by way of Richard Childress Racing to assume crew chief duties for the No. 7 BRANDT Professional Agriculture team and perennial championship contender Allgaier. In 2008, Pohlman helped Allgaier secure an ARCA Menards Series championship, so the pairing will be familiar. Pohlman also spent time at the Cup Series level, most notably as crew chief for Juan Pablo Montoya in 2011 with several opportunities along the way in both Cup and NXS competition.

Additionally, Greenville, S.C. native Lindley, a decades-long veteran of the sport who spent the last two seasons at Kyle Busch Motorsports with six victories, joins Mayer in 2023 to lead the No. 1 team, reuniting the driver and crew chief for the first time since 2020. The Lindley / Mayer combination netted championships in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series (2019) and the ARCA Menards Series (2020). Together, the duo has more than 15 victories between the two series.

Setting the Xfinity Series Playoff Stage

Setting the Xfinity Series Playoff Stage

Only Josh Berry has Cinched his Spot in the Championship 4

The NASCAR Xfinity Series kicked off the Playoffs Round of 8 last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a race that saw JR Motorsports driver Josh Berry take the checkered flag and secure his spot in the Championship 4 Round for the first-time in his career.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series now heads to Homestead-Miami Speedway for the ‘Contender Boats 300’ to keep the Playoffs rolling. Drivers will fill the grid on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 4:30 p.m. ET on the USA Network, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

The 1.5-mile South Florida track has produced 21 different race winners and 20 different pole winners in 28 races. The first race held at Homestead-Miami Speedway was a NASCAR Xfinity Series event on November 5, 1995 – the inaugural Xfinity Series race was won by NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett (Ford, 92.229 mph).

Casey Mears set the track’s qualifying record in 2004 with a speed of 177.936 mph while Tyler Reddick set the race record with a speed of 140.515 mph in 2018. Joe Nemechek has posted the most wins at the track (three) along with the most lead lap finishes (11) and laps completed (3,514). Only five races have been won from the pole or first starting position, most recently by Harrison Burton with his win in 2020.

This will be the first time that Homestead-Miami Speedway serves as the fifth race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. During the Playoff Era (2016-2022), the track was home to the championship race from 2016 to 2019. Daniel Suárez (2016), William Byron (2017) and Tyler Reddick (2018, 2019) took the checkered flags in those seasons. In the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the 1.5-mile track was not featured in the postseason but was on the regular season schedule.

The Xfinity Series will kick off its weekend with practice on Friday, Oct. 21 at 6:05 p.m. ET followed by qualifying at 6:35 p.m. ET on the USA Network and streamed on the NBC Sports App.

One clinched. Three spots up for grabs

The championship race at Phoenix Raceway is now only two weeks away and drivers are starting to feel the heat as time in running short. JR Motorsports’ Josh Berry clinched his spot in the Championship 4 with his win last weekend in Las Vegas so now the remaining seven Playoff drivers will have to bring their A-game this weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in hopes of clinching their spot before the Round of 8 concludes at Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 29.

Already Clinched

The following driver has clinched a spot in the four-driver field of the next round: Josh Berry.

Can Clinch Via Points

If there is a repeat winner or a win by a driver who cannot advance to the next round, the following drivers could clinch by being 56 points above the third winless driver in the standings. The same point requirements listed below would hold true if a new win comes from among Noah Gragson or Ty Gibbs.

  • Noah Gragson: Could only clinch with help
  • Ty Gibbs: Could only clinch with help

If there is a new winner from Justin Allgaier or another winless driver lower in the standings but still eligible to advance to the next round, the following drivers could clinch by being 56 points above the second winless driver in the standings.

  • Noah Gragson: Could only clinch with help

Can Clinch Via Win

The following drivers would clinch on their win alone: Noah Gragson, Ty Gibbs, Justin Allgaier, Austin Hill, AJ Allmendinger, Brandon Jones, Sam Mayer.

With Championships on the line, competition is got heated in Las Vegas. Below is a recap of the three events contested there this weekend.

Joey Logano Clinches Championship 4 Berth

Joey Logano Clinches Championship 4 Berth

Joey Logano battled his way back to the front of the field in the final laps, then capitalized on his fresher tires and passed Ross Chastain in the closing laps to win Sunday’s Round of 8 opener at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“Man, what a great car,” Logano said. “Penske cars were all fast. All of them were really fast today. Oh, man, all you want to do is get to the Championship Four when the season starts and race for a championship, and we’ve got the team to do it. I don’t see why we can’t win at this point.

“Racing Ross was fun. He was doing a good job air-blocking me, and I was just trying to be patient, and eventually, I was like, ‘I’ve got to go here.’ Just great to win out here in Vegas again, and it means so much getting to the championship.”

The win cements Logano into his fifth Championship 4 appearance.

Josh Berry Punches Ticket to Championship 4

Josh Berry’s resume would indicate he’s a top-shelf short track racer, but the JR Motorsports driver may need to expand that profile. Berry’s No. 8 JR Motorsports Chevrolet led a commanding 65 laps en route to the win in the Alsco Uniforms 302 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday — his second victory in the last three races on the high-banked 1.5-miler.

Berry took the lead from AJ Allmendinger with 34 laps remaining — the pair racing hard side-by-side at the front of the field on a late race restart. Berry even got shoved into the outside wall before recovering and moving into the lead for his fifth career win.

With Berry’s win and automatic berth into the Championship 4, Gragson now leads the standings by 19 points over Gibbs and 29 points ahead of Allgaier.

“I was a little bit tight off (Turn) 4 the whole time, and [Allmendinger] left me a lane but nothing extra, but I wasn’t letting off,” said Berry, who hadn’t led a lap in the last six races. “That was for a trip to Phoenix and I was willing to hit the wall or whatever. We’ve had a tough couple weeks or months, but we knew we could do this if we were at our best.

“Had a caution with 30 to go and was able to wrestle the lead away from those guys and build enough of a [points] gap to keep it,” Berry said. “I tell you, I’m just speechless.”

Taylor Gray hits Jackpot with Dominant Victory

Taylor Gray hits Jackpot with Dominant Victory

Even with one of the largest fields in recent ARCA Menards Series West history on hand at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday, nobody could touch Taylor Gray.

From the opening green flag, Gray faced little resistance from his competition and claimed a wire-to-wire victory in the penultimate event on the 2022 ARCA West calendar, which was his fifth in the series and eighth across all three ARCA divisions.

The only obstacles Gray faced came during the numerous restarts in Friday’s Star Nursery 150, but he knew the car prepared by David Gilliland Racing would be strong enough to maintain control of the top spot.

“Landen [Lewis] gave me a little bit of a hard time on those restarts,” Gray said. “All props to my guys who work so hard at the shop. They work their butts off every week so we can come out and do things like this. It was a good race car and a good day.”
