Ty Dillon vs Ty Gibbs

$1,000,000 on the Line in the In-Season Challenge

Ty Dillon vs Ty Gibbs $1,000,000 on the Line in the In-Season Challenge

Racing for a Million! This weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Ty Dillon will go head-to-head with Ty Gibbs in the In-Season Challenge in the Championship Round. The driver with the highest finish will win $1 million.

Ty Dillon will make his sixth Cup Series start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend in the Brickyard 400. In his five previous starts at the track, Dillon had a best finish of 13th in 2019 and had four finishes in the top 20, with his worse finish being 21st.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend. Our team is excited, not just the No. 10 team, but everyone at Kaulig Racing. I’ve won at Indianapolis before and kissed the bricks in the Xfinity Series and every time I’ve gone to Indy, on the big track, I’ve felt very comfortable. I ran Indy last year, so it’s one of the few tracks I’ve ran in the last year, everywhere else, I’ve had a whole year off from racing and you feel like you’re a mile behind and trying to catch up all weekend. I love going back to the tracks where I had an opportunity to run last year. Indy is a place I really look forward to racing and think we can have a good run this weekend and give ourselves a shot at winning the In-Season Challenge and walking away with the million.” Ty Dillon

A charge to fifth place at Dover continued Ty Gibbs’ recent surge, and he now sits in the top 16 in points after averaging an 8.0 finish over the past seven races. He’s a former Brickyard winner — on the road course and in the Xfinity Series, so take it with a grain of salt as it pertains to Sunday — but lines up well to perhaps crack through for his first Cup triumph there this weekend, with extra motivation fueling him with $1 million on the line.

So how do you win a race within the race? Gibbs is trying to keep it simple.“I think it’s most important to win the race, and then we can win the million bucks with it,” Ty Gibbs said.

As an interesting note, though Gibbs and Dillon have varying levels of NASCAR Cup series experience, neither has won a Cup race in their careers. Gibbs has twice finished runner-up — coming at Darlington a year ago and earlier this month at Chicago. Dillion’s career-best finish came in 2020 at Talladega where he took third place.

Gibbs qualified sixth and finished 23rd in last season’s Brickyard 400, while Dillon started 22nd and came in 19th.

Ty Gibbs qualified fifth and Ty Dillon twenty-sixth for today’s Brickyard 400 Presented by PPG.

Corey Day Wins 2024 Turkey Night Grand Prix

Corey Day Wins 2024 Turkey Night Grand Prix

Tough Day for NASCAR Cup Drivers

Corey Day Wins 2024 Turkey Night Grand Prix

Corey Day won the 2024 Turkey Night Grand Prix in his first start to become the youngest winner of the annual classic. Meanwhile, three NASCAR Cup regulars suffered disappointment in the 98-lap race as the highest-finishing driver was Kyle Larson in 20th.

Taking the lead from pole sitter Jacob Denney, Day led the final 17 laps after starting eighth. He pocketed $15,000 for the victory. Day, who turned 19 two days earlier, is now the youngest driver to win the Turkey Night Grand Prix and the fifth consecutive California native to win. Larson began the trend in 2019 and added another victory last year. Logan Seavey (2021) and Justin Grant (2022) are the other two Californians to win recently.

“This was my last race of the year, and I’ve never ended the year with a win in all my years racing,” Day said in a news release. “To do that feels really, really good. I look forward to this swing so much, and to just be able to come race and almost relax. It’s not as high pressure as the normal stuff I’m doing and I’m just really glad Willie [Kahne] and I could get a couple wins down here, and I’m glad to be one spot better here this year.”

Larson worked his way from 10th to fifth by Lap 44, but that was as high as he would run. Three laps later, he was spun by Day and sent to the tail of the field. Larson climbed to 20th and retired with 21 laps remaining.

This is the first time in 12 Turkey Night Grand Prix editions that Larson finished outside the top five.

The fate of Kyle Busch and Ty Gibbs was worse. Busch finished outside the transfer position in the first qualification race but, with an eighth-place result, got a little more experience by qualifying for the Last Chance Qualifier. He ran outside the top 10 in that race when he became the second driver to retire in the 15-lapper.

Gibbs was excluded from the competition when he finished 11th in the second qualification race. Former NASCAR driver JJ Yeley also finished outside the top 10 in his qualification race and saw his night end early.

Michael “Buddy” Kofoid finished second, with Daison Pursley rounding out the podium.

Christopher Bell Clinches Busch Light Pole in Kansas Qualifying

Christopher Bell Clinches Busch Light Pole in Kansas Qualifying

Kansas Speedway marks midway point of the Playoffs’ Round of 16

Christopher Bell earned a second chance on Saturday. For the second straight NASCAR Cup Series playoff race, Bell will start from the pole position after a blistering lap at 180.276 mph (29.954 seconds) in the final round of qualifying for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway (3 p.m. ET, USA, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, NBC Sports App).

As a result of his 23rd-place finish in the Round of 16 opener, Bell came to Kansas 12th in the Cup standings, just one point ahead of Bubba Wallace in 13th. The pole position at the 1.5-mile speedway gives him a chance at redemption.

“That was a lot of fun,” Bell said. “Qualifying here is very intense. That’s certainly all we had. I felt very good in practice today in race trim. Week after week we come to the race track with cars that are capable of racing for wins. …

“(Winning the pole) definitely takes a little bit of pressure off. If you’ve got a fast car, you can just go out there and run your pace. Clean air feels a lot better than being back in the pack.”

Michael McDowell dominated Sunday’s Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Road Course to score his first win of the 2023 season after holding off a hard charging Chase Elliott.

The driver of the No. 34 becomes the 13th driver to punch his ticket to the postseason on a victory. It’s McDowell’s second career win in the Cup Series. His first came in the 2021 Daytona 500.

“I was really trying to pace myself,” McDowell said. “I figured there would be a late-race caution, and I didn’t want to burn my stuff up. I was just trying to maintain that gap.

“Then when I got into traffic, (Elliott) started closing, I had to push it, but I just can’t believe it.”

The win was Gibbs’ first in seven Xfinity Series races this season and the 12th of his Xfinity Series career. Sam Mayer finished runner-up, with AJ Allmendinger, Austin Hill and Justin Allgaier rounding out the top five.

“Definitely about time,” Gibbs told NBC Sports’ Dave Burns. “Really cool to get one here at the Brickyard. I grew up racing go karts in New Castle down the street, so really special to me. Thank you to He Gets Us, all glory to Jesus Christ.

The win marked the first of the 2023 season for the No. 98 ThorSport Racing Ford and locks Majeski into the Round of 8.

“We’re peaking at the right time. This is exactly when we peaked last year. It looks like we’re trending in the same direction. Hopefully this is just the start of our playoff run. We want to go and win Milwaukee, right? That’s my home race. Go win Kansas. We’ve had great trucks at all those places. Bristol and Homestead we’ve won, and Phoenix we’re in the mix to the end. That’s the end goal,” Majeski said.

After getting passed in the late stages of the ARCA race by Luke Fenhaus, Jesse Love executed the final restart of the evening perfectly to regain the lead from Fenhaus and drive away to Victory Lane in Friday’s Reese’s 200 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

“This is such a phenomenal team,” Love said. “I didn’t think I did a great job at saving my stuff and that came back to bite me when [Fenhaus] came by. He was really fast and I was giving this thing all it was worth. I cooled [my tires] down as much as I could [before the restart] hoping it would pay dividends and it did.”

For the fourth time in five dirt races for the Camping World SRX Series, Tony Stewart went to victory lane.

On Thursday night, Stewart took the win at the track he owns, Eldora Speedway, in the 75-lap feature race for the SRX superstars. It was a sweep of the night for the 2021 series champion, as he also won both heat races leading into the feature event. The first-ever heat race sweep gave Stewart the luxury of starting on the pole for the feature, and he would not relinquish the top spot.

“What an awesome night at Eldora Speedway Brought home the win and got to climb the fence again for our friends at Bass Pro Shops! Great having Ron Capps join the Superstar Racing Experience. Thanks to all the fans that came out and to Camping World for their support.” Tony Stewart

Ty Gibbs Takes Checkered Flags - #NASCAR Xfinity

Ty Gibbs and Scott Dixon drove to victories in two Brickyard Weekend races Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, while Daniel Suarez won the pole position for the headlining NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday.

Gibbs dominated the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts NASCAR Xfinity Series race, while Dixon held off Graham Rahal to make history by winning the Gallagher Grand Prix NTT INDYCAR SERIES race on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course.

Gibbs, grandson of Joe Gibbs Racing owner and NFL Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, drove the No. 19 He Gets Us Toyota to a 7.959-second victory over Sam Mayer in the No. 1 Huck’s Market Chevrolet. Gibbs, who started second, took the lead on Lap 46 of the 62-lap race and never trailed thereafter.

“It’s really cool to get one at the Brickyard,” Gibbs said. “I grew up racing go-karts at New Castle (Indiana) right down the street. It’s really special to me. We got the Brickyard – let’s go!”

Suarez will start from the first spot on the grid for the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, which starts at 2:30 p.m. ET Sunday. Tickets are available at IMS.com. Suarez, a native of Mexico, earned his first pole of the 2023 season and third career Cup Series pole in the No. 99 Freeway.com Chevrolet with a lap of 1 minute, 27.968 seconds, 99.814 mph.

“It’s a good first day,” Suarez said. “Looking forward to carrying on tomorrow. We have to execute well. The car has the speed. Now we have to have a good, clean day and the most important thing – have fun.”

Reigning Verizon 200 at the Brickyard winner Tyler Reddick qualified second at 1:28.113 in the No. 45 SiriusXM Radio Toyota.

Chase Elliott, son of 2002 Brickyard 400 winner Bill Elliott, will start third after a lap of 1:28.335 in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet. Michael McDowell will join Elliott in Row 2 after his best lap of 1:28.434 in the No. 34 Horizon Hobby Ford.

Australian Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen qualified eighth for his second Cup Series start. Van Gisbergen, from New Zealand, stunned the motorsports world by winning his Cup Series debut last month in the inaugural street race in downtown Chicago.

Yesterday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series winner Gibbs was the quickest rookie in NASCAR qualifying and will start 10th after a lap of 1:28.606 in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota.

NASCAR Fetes Its National Champions In Nashville Awards Ceremony

NASCAR Fetes Its National Champions In Nashville Awards Ceremony

Headlining the event was #NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano, who drives the No. 22 Ford for Team Penske.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that deuces were wild on Thursday night at the Music City Center, where NASCAR honored the champions of its top three national series at the annual NASCAR Awards.

Headlining the event was NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano, who drives the No. 22 Ford for Team Penske. The title was Logano’s second, following the championship he won for team owner Roger Penske in 2018.

Logano also made a two-time winner of crew chief Paul Wolfe, who earned his first title a decade earlier while on the pit box for Brad Keselowski.

Logano won two of the 10 Playoff races—the first Round of 8 race at Las Vegas to guarantee a spot in the Championship 4 as well as the race that decided the title, the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix.

The 2022 champion ended the season with four wins—in addition, his victory on the exhibition Clash at the Coliseum, the competitive debut of NASCAR’s new Next Gen Cup race car.

“22 in ’22,” Logano said, repeating the motto that had driven his race team throughout the season.

Introduced by friend and IndyCar legend Mario Andretti, Logano paid homage to his team owner and his parents.

“Mom, Dad… Letting me chase my dreams means so much,” said Logano, 32.

He congratulated Penske for winning both the Cup Series and IndyCar championships in the same season.

“That’s never happened before, guys,” said Logano, who ended his speech with advice for young drivers.

“Coming from a guy that has made plenty mistakes in front of a lot of people… plenty of them still remind me of my mistakes,” said Logano, the youngest driver to win a Cup race at 19 years, 35 days. “No regrets.

“I challenge you to take risks, make the big moves, stand up for what’s right. Because it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about winning and growing. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.”

Penske described Logano as “the leader on the track and off the track. Obviously, we’ve signed him up for five more years.”

Wolfe was just as effusive in his praise.

“Joey—he’s the guy that motivates us all,” said Wolfe, who contrasted his first championship with Keselowski with the current title.

“Ten years ago… that first one was so early in my career I didn’t know any better,” Wolfe said.

In addition to recognizing the accomplishments of each of the 16 Playoff drivers, the NASCAR Awards also honored NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Ty Gibbs and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Zane Smith.

Gibbs won the Xfinity Series title at Phoenix, picking up his seventh victory of the season in the process. But hours later, Gibbs’ father, Coy Gibbs died in his sleep at age 49.

When Ty Gibbs took the stage at the Music City Center, he was greeted with a standing ovation.

“Wow! Thank you. It means a lot,” Gibbs said. “Thank you for all the claps. Thank you for all the support. I really appreciate it.”

Team owner Joe Gibbs, Ty’s grandfather, echoed the sentiment.

“Thanks so much for the way you’ve reached out in these last few weeks for our family,” Joe Gibbs said.

Ben Kennedy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing development and strategy, introduced Zane Smith with high praise.

“At such a young age (23), one can’t help but feel like we’re watching a future NASCAR superstar writing the beginning of his story,” Kennedy said.

Smith’s parents were in Phoenix to watch the driver of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford win his fourth race of the season and the accompanying title.

“I’m still not sure if my mom was more excited to see me win or get a picture with Jeff Gordon after the race, since she’s always told me that was her dream,” Smith quipped. “So, I’m happy we were both able to accomplish our dreams that night.”

Ralph Maccarone was honored as the winner of the prestigious Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award. In 2012, Maccarone founded Who We Play For to inspire and empower schools, sports clubs and communities to provide heart screenings for all student athletes and students.

Team owner Justin Marks, who fields cars for Playoff drivers Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez, was honored with the Myers Brothers Award for outstanding contributions to stock car racing. Marks’ Trackhouse Racing enjoyed a breakout season, with Chastain winning twice and Suarez once—and Chastain leaving an indelible mark on the sport with his eye-popping high-speed trip around the Martinsville wall to earn a spot in the Championship 4.

For the fifth straight year, Chase Elliott won the NMPA Most Popular Driver Award, the only significant honor in the sport determined sole by vote of the fans. Elliott’s father, Bill Elliott, won the award a record 16 times. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was voted Most Popular Driver for 15 seasons.

Noah Gragson was the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ Most Popular Driver, and Hailie Deegan earned the honor in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Jes Ferreira from CSM Production was honored as the winner of the Comcast Community Champion of the Year award for her commitment as the single parent of two adopted children.

“We are pleased to announce our return to    keting Officer at NASCAR. “We are delighted to bring the celebration to Nashville once again, as the city’s energy and passion for motorsports never cease to amaze us. We are looking forward to being back following the conclusion of the 2022 season.”

The formal postseason Awards are a tradition that stretches back to 1981, when the event was held in New York City. It relocated to Las Vegas in 2009 and then called Nashville its home for the first time in 2019. Over the last two years NASCAR has seen a tremendous turnout from the Nashville fans not only at the race track, but for the celebration of Champion’s week. NASCAR looks to continue the tradition and conclude the season at one of the most iconic cities in the country.

Coy Gibbs Obituary

Coy Gibbs Obituary

OBITUARY: On Sunday, November 6th, Coy Randall Gibbs died peacefully in his sleep, hours after celebrating the Xfinity Championship won by his oldest son Ty. It was a happy day and Coy’s last moments on earth were filled with joy and laughter. Though grief-stricken, the Gibbs family rests in the knowledge that Coy now knows joy that far exceeds any earthly experience.

Coy is survived by his wife of nearly 24 years, Heather, and their four children, Ty (20), Elle (18), Case (16), and Jett (14). He is also survived by parents, Joe and Pat Gibbs along with 9 nieces and nephews. Coy was 49 years old and joins his brother JD in heaven, who preceded him in death in 2019, also at the age of 49.

An accomplished athlete, Coy played 4-years as a starting linebacker at Stanford and competed as a driver in the NASCAR Late-Model, All-Pro, and Truck series, earning Rookie of the Year in All-Pro. His professional life was spent coaching alongside his father in the NFL, founding the JGR Motocross team he ran for over a decade, and serving most recently serving as the Vice Chairman and COO of Joe Gibbs Racing.

Coy would not care to be remembered for any of these accomplishments and made that clear in his remarks in the media center after Saturday’s championship win. What mattered most to Coy on Saturday was not his title at JGR but his role as Ty’s dad. Similarly, he was an advocate for Elle, encouraging her to pursue college admission at the highest levels and proud of her drive and determination. He coached Case and Jett in numerous sports and enjoyed watching them compete and excel.

Coy was never comfortable in the spotlight and preferred to support those he loved from the background. He was a passionate entrepreneur and loved setting others up for success, whether his own children, his late brother’s sons, the JGR family, the ministries of JGR, and the Pop Warner players he coached for 8 seasons. He was fiercely loyal, quietly generous, mercilessly sarcastic, and tender-hearted in ways he rarely allowed others to see. These people and these moments were his treasures. And heaven is now his reward.
