Hardee’s Returns to NASCAR as an Official Partner

Joins 23XI Racing as Primary Partner of Bubba Wallace and the No. 23

 

NASCAR announced that Hardee’s,  the iconic American quick-service restaurant brand, is returning to the sport in a major way as the Official Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) of NASCAR. In addition to the multiyear agreement, Hardee’s also will join 23XI Racing as a primary partner with Bubba Wallace and the No. 23 team, marking one of the most significant comebacks of a heritage brand in recent NASCAR history. Throughout the season, Wallace will drive the No. 23 Hardee’s car at several races, starting in Martinsville, and Hardee’s branding will be included all season on the No. 23 team’s uniforms and equipment and Wallace’s firesuit.

 

For decades, Hardee’s has been interwoven with NASCAR’s fabric, having sponsored some of the sport’s most legendary names and moments. During the 1980s and 1990s, Hardee’s-backed entries achieved 12 NASCAR Cup Series victories, driven by Hall of Famers including Bobby Allison (1981), Cale Yarborough (1983–1988), Alan Kulwicki (1985), and Dale Jarrett (1988–1989). Allison captured three wins—including the prestigious Coca-Cola 600 — in the famed No. 28 Hardee’s car in 1981. Yarborough went on to secure nine victories with Hardee’s, including back-to-back Daytona 500 titles in 1983 and 1984, cementing the brand’s place in NASCAR history.

Bubba Wallace Holds On in Double Overtime

 

Mother Nature wasn’t going to deprive Bubba Wallace of the most important win of his career, not on this Sunday afternoon.

 

Unsure of the amount of fuel left in his No. 23 Toyota, Wallace survived a rain shower and two overtime restarts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to win the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG, punching his ticket to the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

 

Wallace was comfortably ahead of runner-up Kyle Larson with four laps left in regulation, but the sudden shower forced NASCAR to call the fifth caution of the afternoon.

 

The rain was gone almost as quickly as it appeared, and after a short stoppage to dry the track, Wallace pulled ahead of Larson on the first overtime restart. A five-car accident on the backstretch, however, sent the race to a second extra period.

 

Wallace stayed on track for the next restart — hoping his fuel would last — and again pulled away from Larson and this time took the white flag without incident. After one more circuit, he crossed the finish line 0.222 seconds ahead of Larson to claim the trophy in the crown-jewel event.

 

The third victory of Wallace’s career ended a 100-race dry spell dating to Sept. 11, 2022 at Kansas Speedway. He led 30 laps, including the last 26, as the race went eight circuits beyond the scheduled 160.

 

“Oh, my gosh, I’m just so proud of this team,” Wallace said. “That adrenaline rush is crazy, ’cause I’m coming off that right now — and I’m worn out.”

 

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “To win here at the Brickyard, knowing how big this race is, knowing all the noise that’s going on in the background, to set that all aside is a testament to these people here on this 23 team. It’s been getting old right around the cut line (for the playoffs).”

 

Kyle Larson finished second; Denny Hamlin placed third; Ryan Preece came in fourth and Brad Keselowski completed the top five.

Three in a Row: Connor Zilisch Stays Hot

 

As contrary as it might seem, there was ambivalence in Connor Zilisch’s victory in Saturday’s Pennzoil 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

 

Yes, Zilisch won his third straight NASCAR Xfinity Series race and added to his inarguable credentials as a budding superstar. What’s more, Zilisch delivered victory No. 100 to JR Motorsports, the organization founded by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister, Kelly Earnhardt Miller.

 

But Zilisch’s victory came at the expense of teammate Justin Allgaier, who made a heroic move on the outside to retake the lead from Kyle Larson on Lap 74 and had the win in his sights until the following restart on Lap 87.

 

That’s when Larson’s No. 17 Chevrolet broke loose in Turn 1 and turned Allgaier’s Chevrolet into the outside wall and out of the race.

 

That left Zilisch and Taylor Gray to battle for the lead after a restart with four laps left. With a push from the Ford of Sam Mayer, Zilisch took control on Lap 99 of 100 and held on to win by 0.339 seconds over Mayer as Gray slipped to third.

 

“I see some bricks that look kissable, and I’m going to kiss them,” Zilisch said, referencing an Indianapolis tradition started by NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett. “This is awesome. One hundred wins for JRM. Congrats to Dale, Kelley, L.W. (Miller), everybody who’s raced for JRM, everybody who works at JRM.”

 

“I’m the smallest part of this team, and I’m so glad to be a part of it.”

 

“I hate it for Justin, because he’s been the cornerstone of the company for so many years,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said of the reigning series champion. “He’s been dependable, reliable, great with our partners and he wants to do these things for us.”

Layne Riggs Leads 160 Laps, Wins at IRP

 

The post-race celebration said it all.

 

Layne Riggs planted the nose of his No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford firmly against the outside of the pit row wall and lit up his tires as members of his team stood on the barrier and pumped their fists repeatedly.

 

The elation was well-deserved after Riggs scored his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Friday night’s TSport 200.

 

With his second victory of the season and a sweep of the first two stages, Riggs cut into the dominating lead of Corey Heim with two races left in the regular season.

 

Nevertheless, Heim, who ran third in a balky No. 11 Toyota, clinched the regular-season title.

 

“I’ll tell you, this truck was badass, man,” Riggs said after climbing from the F-150 on pit road. “It was so great. I was just out front saving my tires at the end. Then I was just waiting for a late-race caution (which never came), trying to run the bottom and trying to keep the least amount of distance to keep the distance off my tires.

 

“It’s so great to get (sponsor) Clew Nicotine Pouches in Victory Lane. That’s only their second race with us, and we’re super excited to have them. That was a pretty cool celebration.”

Brent Crews rebounds at Lucas Oil IRP

 

Brent Crews helped Joe Gibbs Racing check another box in the ARCA Menards Series Friday evening at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. 

 

Gibbs’ ARCA Menards Series program had yet to win at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park prior to the LiUNA! 150 presented by Dutch Boy. Excellent second half adjustments from crew chief Matt Ross enabled Crews to overtake Brenden Queen and pull away for his second ARCA Menards Series national win of the year and third overall.

 

Crews has now won half of the ARCA Menards Series events he has entered in 2025. He knew adjustments would be needed to eclipse Queen’s stellar pace, but commended Ross for perfecting his car during the closing 75 laps.

 

“I was exhausted,” Crews said. “This JGR group did an absolutely fabulous job at the break there. [Queen] was really good in the first half and I was giving everything I had trying to hang with him. I knew Matt [Ross] and the crew had something up their sleeve to get me that extra little bit at the halfway break and that’s exactly what he did.”

Inside Michael Jordan’s-Quest-for-NASCAR Glory

I'm so proud that in four years we've gotten to the point of competing for a championship,” Michael Jordan.

 

In recent years, His Airness has given up the basketball court for the racetrack, where winning a championship is still his top priority. We hit pit lane with His Airness as his 23XI Racing squad competed for a title.

 

It’s NASCAR’s championship weekend at Phoenix Raceway, and Tyler Reddick is hustling to his Number 45 car to put in his first qualifying lap of the day. As he speedwalks down pit lane, he spots—casually seated on the pit wall—the guy who signs his paychecks: Michael Jordan.

 

Yes, that Michael Jordan, the basketball GOAT and arguably most famous athlete of all time, who just so happens to be the majority owner of 23XI Racing, Reddick’s team.

 

“Go make it happen, big dog,” MJ says as he shakes hands with his driver.

 

Jordan co-founded 23XI with NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin four years ago. (Hamlin races in the Number 11 car—hence the team’s name.) Since then, His Airness has been a frequent presence at races. But for those in the know, MJ’s interest in NASCAR was no surprise. Jordan has loved the sport since he was a child growing up in North Carolina, a hotbed for stock-car racing, saying years ago that he “sets his alarm clock on Sundays” for each race.

 

This year, with his team making a championship charge, MJ has been a mainstay at the track, supporting his team week to week through the ups and downs of NASCAR’s 10-month season. And while he’s been able to provide lots of pep talks and encouragement, he’s found that going for a title as an owner is a lot different from when he was an NBA player.

 

“It's a very different feeling,” Jordan tells me via email after the race. “It's like how my parents must have felt when they would come to watch me play for the Bulls. I'm nervous, but there's truly nothing I can do. I have no ability to influence the outcome of the race, so I can only support and cheer on our team and drivers."

 

Of course, MJ being MJ, he’s not totally content to just sit helplessly on the sidelines. Billy Scott, Tyler Reddick’s crew chief, says that Jordan frequently speaks with him about strategy and other technical aspects of the race.

 

“At first it was kind of surprising how invested, how knowledgeable, and how big a fan he is,” Scott says. “He’ll have questions about tires, fall-off, things like that—stuff most fans are not even aware of.”

 

After a big strategy call a few weeks back in Charlotte helped Reddick avoid being bounced from the playoffs, Jordan effectively told Scott that he would pass the crew chief the ball with time running out—the ultimate sign that he had earned MJ’s trust.

 

“It’s just reassuring to have him around,” Scott adds. “You can see his competitive nature in everything he does. He wants to figure out a way to help and be a part of this as much as anybody.”

 

Jordan looks on as Reddick sets out on his qualifying lap, roaring around the oval in his souped-up Toyota Camry with Monster Energy’s “The Beast” brand emblazoned on the side. He sets the fifth-quickest lap of the session, generating roars from his team back in the pit box, MJ among them.

 

Later, while decompressing in his hauler (the massive 18-wheelers that serve as each NASCAR team's traveling home base from week to week), Reddick reflects on what a wild season it’s been.

 

“I’ve literally dreamt of being a NASCAR champion since I was a child,” he says. But winning it with MJ cheering beside him?

 

“Okay, maybe I didn’t dream that part up as a kid,” he laughs.

 

In only four years, 23XI has gone from an underdog story to a championship contender, but it’s been disrupting NASCAR since day one. For starters, it’s always been a unique team: Jordan is one of only two Black owners in the sport, and the team employs Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only Black driver. As time rolled on, the team brought on a second car (now fielding, appropriately enough, car numbers 23 and 45), and Nike-owned Jordan Brand came on as a sponsor.

 

The team’s been disrupting off the track, too. The elephant in the room throughout championship weekend is that Jordan’s team, along with one other, is currently suing NASCAR, calling out the sport’s governing body as “monopolistic bullies.” In fact, just days prior to the championship race, MJ appeared in court for the case’s first preliminary hearing.

 

“I put all my cards on the table,” he told reporters outside the courthouse, before quickly adding: “I’m looking forward to winning a championship this weekend.”

 

Back at the racetrack, co-owner Hamlin admits to the media that 23XI may end up not racing at all next season, though most insiders seem convinced that an agreement will be reached. Scott and Reddick, meanwhile, insist the legal dispute is not a distraction.

 

“They’ve done a good job of letting us handle the competition, so it’s been pretty well separated,” Scott says.

 

Reddick, looking cool and calm, insists that his attention is squarely aimed at winning the title.

 

“I’ve seen everyone’s mindset, the attitude of everyone around the shop, the focus,” he says. “Everything has been in a really good place, lasered in on what we need to do.”

 

On race day, MJ strolls up to the 23XI hauler in a green Jordan-brand shirt and camo pants, his presence drawing more than a few oohs and aahs from VIP guests and fans. He delivers a feisty speech to the team behind closed doors and high fives the pit crew as he exits. At one point, he pretends to put on headphones and says to an engineer, “Keep feeding me that info!"

 

Roger Penske, one of the biggest names in motorsports and a fellow NASCAR team owner, stops by to shake MJ’s hand and wish him luck. “Good luck to you as well,” Jordan replies cordially.

 

When the race begins, the two men’s differing ownership styles are on full display. Television coverage shows Penske watching the action stoically from a suite overlooking the track. Jordan, on the other hand, catches the entire race from the pit box, standing just feet away from his crew, practically breathing down their necks during pit stops.

 

As the race unfolds, Reddick hovers around the top 10 but can’t make much progress. MJ pumps his fist and high-fives Reddick’s dad when the driver makes a daring move to gain ground after a restart, putting him into fifth—and back in contention for the title. But as the laps tick away, Reddick simply can’t gain ground, and Team Penske’s Joey Logano ultimately wins the race, and the championship.

As the drivers exit their cars, MJ is the first one there to console a heartbroken Reddick.

 

“Enjoy your vacation, then we go right back at it,” MJ says. Reddick nods and replies, “Back to work.”

 

The team may have lost, but the weekend still feels like a win. In just a few years, 23XI has become a true contender, And it’s been a while since we’ve had the chance to see MJ back in contention for a title, even if it’s on a racetrack and not the hardwood.

 

“I don’t know when he’s last had that type of success in the sports arena,” Scott says, “but hopefully we’ve been able to give him just a small percentage of what he’s been looking for since he stopped playing.”

 

For his part, MJ seems content, even though he’s not exactly accustomed to losing championships.

 

"I'm so proud that in four years we've gotten to the point of competing for a championship,” Jordan tells me. “But I want us to keep improving. I have aspirations to win a championship and that's what we're constantly working toward."

Wallace and Herbst's High-Stakes Pursuit

Looking to Hit the Jackpot at Las Vegas

 

Bubba Wallace and Riley Herbst are gearing up for racing in Las Vegas, aiming for triumph at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway with Wallace in Cup and Herbst in Xfinity. Both drivers showcased their skill at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last year, with Wallace earning a fourth-place finish in the Pennzoil 400 and Herbst picking up his first career Xfinity win in October. Reflecting on the 2023 season, Wallace raced to clinch a playoff spot in the round of 16 based on points. This momentum propelled Bubba in the second playoff round, concluding the season with five top-5 finishes, ten top-10 finishes, and 285 laps led—an achievement marking a new career best.

 

Herbst, a Las Vegas native, is looking to continue a hot streak at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Coming out of Daytona and Atlanta, finishing in sixth and 15th, the Stewart-Haas driver is looking to drive his way to the front of the pack yet again. Herbst stands third in the Xfinity Series Driver Standings with 74 points, right behind Austin Hill and Sheldon Creed.

 

“I feel like we have the momentum,” Herbst said. “I walk into the garage in the Xfinity Series, knowing that I can win any race, lead every lap and that I am a championship contender. “I think, you know, that's new, and that happened after my win here in Las Vegas, and hopefully, we can continue that roll and be a dominant force this year.”

Ahead of 2024 NASCAR Season

 

As 23XI Racing looks towards a successful future, they’re making a slight tweak to their aesthetic.

Bubba Wallace Earns Pole for 'Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400'

#NASCAR Cup Series Round Of 12 Playoff Opener

 

Championship contender Bubba Wallace opened the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Round of 12 in promising fashion by earning the pole position in Saturday’s qualifying for the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Texas Motor Speedway.

 

Wallace, driver of the No. 23 McDonald’s Toyota for 23XI Racing, posted a lap speed of 188.337 miles per hour (28.672 seconds) in the final round of qualifying to earn his first pole position of the season and second of his career. His other pole came last August at Michigan International Speedway.

 

Wallace, the final seed in the field of 12 playoff drivers, will lead the 36-car field to the green flag for Sunday’s Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 beginning at 2:30 p.m. (TV: USA, Radio: PRN, SiriusXM).

 

“We have the best track position right now, but we know with strategy, everything is going to change and evolve (tomorrow),” Wallace said. “We are going to get behind at some point, so it is just a matter of making the most of every situation that we are in. Right now, we start on the pole, if we lead all the laps – some people may pit and cut it. You are going to get behind at some point, so we’ve got to figure out how to get back up there, but you can’t get complacent on the small victories. It takes a lot of them to get to a big victory, but it’s a good start.”

 

Wallace easily topped his previously best starting position at Texas Motor Speedway of 10th, which came in the spring race of 2019, in eight career starts.

 

“Was I expecting it? I don’t know,” he said. “In qualifying, I tend to try too hard and overthink things. I need to stop that and just go out and do. So that was a good surprise.”

 

Wallace, the last driver to qualify in the 10-driver final round of qualifying, edged out Prosper, Texas native Chris Buescher of RFK Racing. Buescher, driver of the No. 17 Fastenal Ford, ran a lap of 188.081 mph (28.711), which was .039 of a second shy of Wallace’s pole-winning time. The qualifying run was his best of the season, topping his fourth at Michigan.

Kansas Speedway marks midway point of the Playoffs’ Round of 16

 

Christopher Bell earned a second chance on Saturday. For the second straight NASCAR Cup Series playoff race, Bell will start from the pole position after a blistering lap at 180.276 mph (29.954 seconds) in the final round of qualifying for Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway (3 p.m. ET, USA, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, NBC Sports App).

 

As a result of his 23rd-place finish in the Round of 16 opener, Bell came to Kansas 12th in the Cup standings, just one point ahead of Bubba Wallace in 13th. The pole position at the 1.5-mile speedway gives him a chance at redemption.

 

“That was a lot of fun,” Bell said. “Qualifying here is very intense. That’s certainly all we had. I felt very good in practice today in race trim. Week after week we come to the race track with cars that are capable of racing for wins. …

 

“(Winning the pole) definitely takes a little bit of pressure off. If you’ve got a fast car, you can just go out there and run your pace. Clean air feels a lot better than being back in the pack.”

Bubba Wallace Retaliates (Again)

Wallace & Austin Dillon With Ten Laps to Go

 

On Sunday, NASCAR unloaded in Los Angeles, California. The 1/4-mile bullring inside the Los Angeles Coliseum brought drama to stock car racing.

 

Bubba Wallace (#23) and Austin Dillon (#3) found themselves jostling for position often, routinely going back and forth at the front of the pack.

 

With 10 laps to go, Austin Dillon was in second with Bubba Wallace in third. Race leader and eventual winner, Martin Truex Jr (#19) picked the inside lane for a restart, as did Dillon. Bubba Wallace elected for the front row, outside.

 

As you can see in the video below: Dillion rear-ended Wallace, spinning the No. 23 car out.

"The No. 3 just never tried to make a corner, he just always would run into my left rear," Wallace said. "I got run into the fence by him down the straightaway on that restart, so I gave him a shot. And then we get dumped. It sucks."

"I chose the restart there behind Martin (Truex Jr.) thinking that if we could get off (Turn) 2, then I could just race," Dillon said. "But it just doesn't go that way. You're just getting beat. . . . He was probably pretty frustrated at that point."

 

It is interesting to note that ahead of the 2023 season, NASCAR announced new rules for on-track altercations. The response likely stems following the incident between Kyle Larson and Bubba Wallace. Luckily this incident was not as ferocious.
