Bubba Wallace Holds On in Double Overtime

 

Mother Nature wasn’t going to deprive Bubba Wallace of the most important win of his career, not on this Sunday afternoon.

 

Unsure of the amount of fuel left in his No. 23 Toyota, Wallace survived a rain shower and two overtime restarts at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to win the Brickyard 400 presented by PPG, punching his ticket to the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

 

Wallace was comfortably ahead of runner-up Kyle Larson with four laps left in regulation, but the sudden shower forced NASCAR to call the fifth caution of the afternoon.

 

The rain was gone almost as quickly as it appeared, and after a short stoppage to dry the track, Wallace pulled ahead of Larson on the first overtime restart. A five-car accident on the backstretch, however, sent the race to a second extra period.

 

Wallace stayed on track for the next restart — hoping his fuel would last — and again pulled away from Larson and this time took the white flag without incident. After one more circuit, he crossed the finish line 0.222 seconds ahead of Larson to claim the trophy in the crown-jewel event.

 

The third victory of Wallace’s career ended a 100-race dry spell dating to Sept. 11, 2022 at Kansas Speedway. He led 30 laps, including the last 26, as the race went eight circuits beyond the scheduled 160.

 

“Oh, my gosh, I’m just so proud of this team,” Wallace said. “That adrenaline rush is crazy, ’cause I’m coming off that right now — and I’m worn out.”

 

“It’s unbelievable,” he said. “To win here at the Brickyard, knowing how big this race is, knowing all the noise that’s going on in the background, to set that all aside is a testament to these people here on this 23 team. It’s been getting old right around the cut line (for the playoffs).”

 

Kyle Larson finished second; Denny Hamlin placed third; Ryan Preece came in fourth and Brad Keselowski completed the top five.

Three in a Row: Connor Zilisch Stays Hot

 

As contrary as it might seem, there was ambivalence in Connor Zilisch’s victory in Saturday’s Pennzoil 250 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

 

Yes, Zilisch won his third straight NASCAR Xfinity Series race and added to his inarguable credentials as a budding superstar. What’s more, Zilisch delivered victory No. 100 to JR Motorsports, the organization founded by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his sister, Kelly Earnhardt Miller.

 

But Zilisch’s victory came at the expense of teammate Justin Allgaier, who made a heroic move on the outside to retake the lead from Kyle Larson on Lap 74 and had the win in his sights until the following restart on Lap 87.

 

That’s when Larson’s No. 17 Chevrolet broke loose in Turn 1 and turned Allgaier’s Chevrolet into the outside wall and out of the race.

 

That left Zilisch and Taylor Gray to battle for the lead after a restart with four laps left. With a push from the Ford of Sam Mayer, Zilisch took control on Lap 99 of 100 and held on to win by 0.339 seconds over Mayer as Gray slipped to third.

 

“I see some bricks that look kissable, and I’m going to kiss them,” Zilisch said, referencing an Indianapolis tradition started by NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Jarrett. “This is awesome. One hundred wins for JRM. Congrats to Dale, Kelley, L.W. (Miller), everybody who’s raced for JRM, everybody who works at JRM.”

 

“I’m the smallest part of this team, and I’m so glad to be a part of it.”

 

“I hate it for Justin, because he’s been the cornerstone of the company for so many years,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said of the reigning series champion. “He’s been dependable, reliable, great with our partners and he wants to do these things for us.”

Layne Riggs Leads 160 Laps, Wins at IRP

 

The post-race celebration said it all.

 

Layne Riggs planted the nose of his No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford firmly against the outside of the pit row wall and lit up his tires as members of his team stood on the barrier and pumped their fists repeatedly.

 

The elation was well-deserved after Riggs scored his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series victory at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Friday night’s TSport 200.

 

With his second victory of the season and a sweep of the first two stages, Riggs cut into the dominating lead of Corey Heim with two races left in the regular season.

 

Nevertheless, Heim, who ran third in a balky No. 11 Toyota, clinched the regular-season title.

 

“I’ll tell you, this truck was badass, man,” Riggs said after climbing from the F-150 on pit road. “It was so great. I was just out front saving my tires at the end. Then I was just waiting for a late-race caution (which never came), trying to run the bottom and trying to keep the least amount of distance to keep the distance off my tires.

 

“It’s so great to get (sponsor) Clew Nicotine Pouches in Victory Lane. That’s only their second race with us, and we’re super excited to have them. That was a pretty cool celebration.”

Brent Crews rebounds at Lucas Oil IRP

 

Brent Crews helped Joe Gibbs Racing check another box in the ARCA Menards Series Friday evening at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. 

 

Gibbs’ ARCA Menards Series program had yet to win at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park prior to the LiUNA! 150 presented by Dutch Boy. Excellent second half adjustments from crew chief Matt Ross enabled Crews to overtake Brenden Queen and pull away for his second ARCA Menards Series national win of the year and third overall.

 

Crews has now won half of the ARCA Menards Series events he has entered in 2025. He knew adjustments would be needed to eclipse Queen’s stellar pace, but commended Ross for perfecting his car during the closing 75 laps.

 

“I was exhausted,” Crews said. “This JGR group did an absolutely fabulous job at the break there. [Queen] was really good in the first half and I was giving everything I had trying to hang with him. I knew Matt [Ross] and the crew had something up their sleeve to get me that extra little bit at the halfway break and that’s exactly what he did.”

Ty Dillon vs Ty Gibbs

 $1,000,000 on the Line in the In-Season Challenge

 

Racing for a Million! This weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Ty Dillon will go head-to-head with Ty Gibbs in the In-Season Challenge in the Championship Round. The driver with the highest finish will win $1 million.

 

Ty Dillon will make his sixth Cup Series start at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend in the Brickyard 400. In his five previous starts at the track, Dillon had a best finish of 13th in 2019 and had four finishes in the top 20, with his worse finish being 21st.

 

“I’m looking forward to this weekend. Our team is excited, not just the No. 10 team, but everyone at Kaulig Racing. I’ve won at Indianapolis before and kissed the bricks in the Xfinity Series and every time I’ve gone to Indy, on the big track, I’ve felt very comfortable. I ran Indy last year, so it’s one of the few tracks I’ve ran in the last year, everywhere else, I’ve had a whole year off from racing and you feel like you’re a mile behind and trying to catch up all weekend. I love going back to the tracks where I had an opportunity to run last year. Indy is a place I really look forward to racing and think we can have a good run this weekend and give ourselves a shot at winning the In-Season Challenge and walking away with the million.” Ty Dillon

 

A charge to fifth place at Dover continued Ty Gibbs’ recent surge, and he now sits in the top 16 in points after averaging an 8.0 finish over the past seven races. He’s a former Brickyard winner — on the road course and in the Xfinity Series, so take it with a grain of salt as it pertains to Sunday — but lines up well to perhaps crack through for his first Cup triumph there this weekend, with extra motivation fueling him with $1 million on the line.

 

So how do you win a race within the race? Gibbs is trying to keep it simple.“I think it’s most important to win the race, and then we can win the million bucks with it,” Ty Gibbs said.

 

As an interesting note, though Gibbs and Dillon have varying levels of NASCAR Cup series experience, neither has won a Cup race in their careers. Gibbs has twice finished runner-up — coming at Darlington a year ago and earlier this month at Chicago. Dillion’s career-best finish came in 2020 at Talladega where he took third place.

 

Gibbs qualified sixth and finished 23rd in last season’s Brickyard 400, while Dillon started 22nd and came in 19th.

Michael Mcdowell Wins Cup Series Race at Indy Road Course; Clinches Playoff Berth

 

Michael McDowell dominated Sunday’s Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Road Course to score his first win of the 2023 season after holding off a hard charging Chase Elliott.

 

The driver of the No. 34 becomes the 13th driver to punch his ticket to the postseason on a victory. It’s McDowell’s second career win in the Cup Series. His first came in the 2021 Daytona 500.

 

“I was really trying to pace myself,” McDowell said. “I figured there would be a late-race caution, and I didn’t want to burn my stuff up. I was just trying to maintain that gap.

 

“Then when I got into traffic, (Elliott) started closing, I had to push it, but I just can’t believe it.”

Ty Gibbs Distances Field, Wins Xfinity Series Race at Indy Road Course

 

In conjunction with brisk speed out front, Ty Gibbs brushed off a 43-minute weather delay to find Victory Lane in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course Saturday evening.

 

The win was Gibbs’ first in seven Xfinity Series races this season and the 12th of his Xfinity Series career. Sam Mayer finished runner-up, with AJ Allmendinger, Austin Hill and Justin Allgaier rounding out the top five.

 

“Definitely about time,” Gibbs told NBC Sports’ Dave Burns. “Really cool to get one here at the Brickyard. I grew up racing go karts in New Castle down the street, so really special to me. Thank you to He Gets Us, all glory to Jesus Christ.

 

“Awesome car, great car. Thank you, Jason Ratcliff. This is the man right here. Jason did a great job. Thank you. This is just so special to me.”

Ty Majeski Dominates Truck Series Playoff Opener at IRP

 

Ty Majeski took the checkered flag Friday night at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park to open the Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs.

 

The win marked the first of the 2023 season for the No. 98 ThorSport Racing Ford and locks Majeski into the Round of 8.

 

“We’re peaking at the right time. This is exactly when we peaked last year. It looks like we’re trending in the same direction. Hopefully this is just the start of our playoff run. We want to go and win Milwaukee, right? That’s my home race. Go win Kansas. We’ve had great trucks at all those places. Bristol and Homestead we’ve won, and Phoenix we’re in the mix to the end. That’s the end goal,” Majeski said.

Jesse Love Bags Seventh Win of 2023 in Reese’s 200 At IRP

 

After getting passed in the late stages of the ARCA race by Luke Fenhaus, Jesse Love executed the final restart of the evening perfectly to regain the lead from Fenhaus and drive away to Victory Lane in Friday’s Reese’s 200 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

 

“This is such a phenomenal team,” Love said. “I didn’t think I did a great job at saving my stuff and that came back to bite me when [Fenhaus] came by. He was really fast and I was giving this thing all it was worth. I cooled [my tires] down as much as I could [before the restart] hoping it would pay dividends and it did.”

Tony Stewart Wins His Home SRX Race at Eldora

 

For the fourth time in five dirt races for the Camping World SRX Series, Tony Stewart went to victory lane.

 

On Thursday night, Stewart took the win at the track he owns, Eldora Speedway, in the 75-lap feature race for the SRX superstars. It was a sweep of the night for the 2021 series champion, as he also won both heat races leading into the feature event. The first-ever heat race sweep gave Stewart the luxury of starting on the pole for the feature, and he would not relinquish the top spot.

Ty Gibbs and Scott Dixon Take Checkered Flags

Suarez to Start from Cup Pole

 

Ty Gibbs and Scott Dixon drove to victories in two Brickyard Weekend races Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, while Daniel Suarez won the pole position for the headlining NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday.

 

Gibbs dominated the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts NASCAR Xfinity Series race, while Dixon held off Graham Rahal to make history by winning the Gallagher Grand Prix NTT INDYCAR SERIES race on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course.

 

Gibbs, grandson of Joe Gibbs Racing owner and NFL Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, drove the No. 19 He Gets Us Toyota to a 7.959-second victory over Sam Mayer in the No. 1 Huck’s Market Chevrolet. Gibbs, who started second, took the lead on Lap 46 of the 62-lap race and never trailed thereafter.

 

“It’s really cool to get one at the Brickyard,” Gibbs said. “I grew up racing go-karts at New Castle (Indiana) right down the street. It’s really special to me. We got the Brickyard – let’s go!”

 

Suarez will start from the first spot on the grid for the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, which starts at 2:30 p.m. ET Sunday. Tickets are available at IMS.com. Suarez, a native of Mexico, earned his first pole of the 2023 season and third career Cup Series pole in the No. 99 Freeway.com Chevrolet with a lap of 1 minute, 27.968 seconds, 99.814 mph.

 

“It’s a good first day,” Suarez said. “Looking forward to carrying on tomorrow. We have to execute well. The car has the speed. Now we have to have a good, clean day and the most important thing – have fun.”

 

Reigning Verizon 200 at the Brickyard winner Tyler Reddick qualified second at 1:28.113 in the No. 45 SiriusXM Radio Toyota.

 

Chase Elliott, son of 2002 Brickyard 400 winner Bill Elliott, will start third after a lap of 1:28.335 in the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet. Michael McDowell will join Elliott in Row 2 after his best lap of 1:28.434 in the No. 34 Horizon Hobby Ford.

 

Australian Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen qualified eighth for his second Cup Series start. Van Gisbergen, from New Zealand, stunned the motorsports world by winning his Cup Series debut last month in the inaugural street race in downtown Chicago.

 

Yesterday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series winner Gibbs was the quickest rookie in NASCAR qualifying and will start 10th after a lap of 1:28.606 in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota.

Daly To Race in the NASCAR ‘Pennzoil 150’

Xfinity at the Brickyard

 

NTT INDYCAR SERIES and Indianapolis 500 veteran Conor Daly will race in the ‘Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts’ NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday, Aug. 12 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

 

Daly, from nearby Noblesville, Indiana, will drive the No. 44 Chevrolet Camaro fielded by Alpha Prime Racing. Sponsors include insurance adjuster company AAN Adjusters, Inc. and Gilreath Farms, a grass-fed cattle purveyor.

 

“Really appreciate Team Alpha Prime giving me a chance at my home track on Brickyard Weekend,” Daly said in a social media post. “Will be fun to compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series again.”

 

Daly last competed in the Xfinity Series in 2018, at Road America. But he has made two NASCAR Cup Series starts this season for The Money Team Racing, in the Daytona 500 and at Circuit of the Americas.

 

Indiana native Daly also has made 10 NTT INDYCAR SERIES starts this season, with Ed Carpenter Racing and Meyer Shank Racing.

 

Daly is the second open-wheel standout to try their hand at NASCAR Xfinity Series stock car racing on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course during Brickyard Weekend. Indianapolis 500 veteran Katherine Legge will drive in the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts in the No. 07 Chevrolet fielded by SS Green Light Racing.

 

Four international racers also will drive in the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard for the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday, Aug. 13 at IMS – 2009 Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, sports car ace and ex-F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi and Australian V8 touring car stars Shane Van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki. Van Gisbergen stunned the NASCAR world by winning his first Cup Series start last month in the series’ first-ever street race, in downtown Chicago.

 

The Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts is one of four races on the IMS road course during one of the most unique weekends in global motorsports, as it’s the only event in which the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NTT INDYCAR SERIES share the same track on the same weekend.

 

Highlights of the schedule Saturday, Aug. 12 include the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts and the Gallagher Grand Prix for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard for the NASCAR Cup Series takes center stage Sunday, Aug. 13. The future stars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES also will race in the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix on Friday, Aug. 11.

Tyler Reddick Scores Overtime Victory

 

The NASCAR Cup Series has a new road course conqueror.

 

Tyler Reddick survived a wild overtime battle against Ross Chastain — who, as it turned out, was under penalty for finagling the first corner — to win Sunday’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. Reddick’s NASCAR Cup Series victory at the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course was his second this month, the second of his career and his second at a road course.

 

“Well, we just know what we’re capable of, and we did that at Road America,” said Reddick, who led a race-high 38 laps on Sunday. “Certainly, (the announcement) was a little bump in the road, but we went out and won a race fair and square a couple weeks ago, and if we change nothing, we keep working really, really hard, we find a way back to Victory Lane.

AJ Allmendinger Cruises to Xfinity Win

 

The NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff is still six races away, but AJ Allmendinger has already clinched one title.

 

With his victory in Saturday’s Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard, the driver of the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet is the undisputed King of the Road.

 

Allmendinger was an irresistible force at the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course. He led 42 of the 62 laps and overcame a fraught 25-second pit stop that dropped him from the lead to 13th for a restart on Lap 19.

 

The victory was Allmendinger’s third of the season — all on road courses — and his fourth win in the last five Xfinity Series races on circuits that turn right as well as left, dating to his triumph in last year’s fall event at the Charlotte Roval.

 

“I knew (Alex) Bowman was really good at the long runs, and so I tried to gap him as much as I could. God, I love Indy!”

 

“We gave up stage points a little bit there as well, to the guys we’re fighting for points,” Allmendinger said. “But you know what? Points don’t mean a damn thing — we’re kissing the bricks. Hell, yeah!”

Grant Enfinger Powers to Dramatic Truck Victory

 

Grant Enfinger picked a fine time to win his first race of the season.

 

Charging to the front on fresh tires after the TSport 200 went to overtime on Friday night, Enfinger passed Zane Smith for the lead on Lap 206 of 207 and went on to win the first event in the 2022 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Playoffs. 

 

 

“We’ve just been off a little bit as an organization,” Enfinger said. “We’ve been working so hard because we’ve been sucking. It hurts to say it, but we’ve had a terrible season to this point. But we had a great Chevrolet all day. It felt like every time we got into the lead, a caution came out, and it put Hensley in a bad spot. I knew from experience to just trust his gut.”

Chandler Smith, Truck Series Star, Rules IRP

 

It was a battle of two Smiths on Friday night at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

 

When the checkered flag waved, it was Chandler Smith who bested Sammy Smith to earn his first ARCA Menards Series victory of the season during the Reese’s 200 at the 0.686-mile asphalt oval. The event was also part of the Sioux Chief Showdown schedule.

 

The triumph also marked Chandler Smith’s third-straight ARCA Menards Series victory at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park dating back to 2019.

 

“Track position was pretty big,” said Chandler Smith, who is also one of 10 Playoff drivers who will battle for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship starting Friday night at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park. “You wouldn’t think short track racing (that) aero matters, but it really does. After you’ve done some mile-and-a-half races in Trucks you start coming back and picking up on this a little bit.”

Rossi Wins Gallagher Grand Prix To End Three-Year Dry Spell

 

The drought finally is over for Alexander Rossi.

 

Rossi won the Gallagher Grand Prix on Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course to snap a 49-race winless streak, earning his first victory since capturing the NTT INDYCAR SERIES race June 23, 2019 at Road America, 1,133 days ago. This was Rossi’s eighth career victory.

 

“It’s a relief, man,” Rossi said. “It’s been so many things for so long. Thankfully something came our way.”

Kurt Busch Sidelined Again at Indianapolis

Is the Next Gen Car Safe?

 

After last weekend’s crash at Pocono Raceway, Kurt Busch will miss his second consecutive race this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.

Pocono Raceway, slamming into the wall and causing major rear damage.

 

 

Busch’s crash in Saturday’s qualifying session at Pocono left him with concussion-like symptoms that prevented him from being medically cleared to compete. After being evaluated before Sunday’s Verizon 200 at the Brickyard (2:30 p.m. ET, NBC, NBC Sports App, IMS Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), Busch was not cleared to participate in this weekend’s events.

 

Some drivers told NBC Sports last month that they felt harder impacts this year with the Next Gen car than with the previous car. More drivers spoke up about the matter Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

 

Kevin Harvick questions how much NASCAR is prioritizing safety in light of driver complaints about feeling harder impacts this year and Kurt Busch missing his second consecutive race due to concussion-like symptoms.

 

“The concerns that the drivers have just haven’t seemed to resonate into a really, really quick response into trying to make that better,” Harvick said. “That’s concerning. I know that everybody will tell you that they’re working on it.

 

“I don’t think they understand the extent of it and actually the extent of how bad it is when you hit stuff. … I don’t think anybody really understands, except for the drivers that have crashed into something, the violence that comes in the car. It doesn’t seem to be a high enough priority to me.”

 

John Patalak, managing director of safety engineering for NASCAR, told NBC Sports earlier this month that crash data this year looks similar to past years. Drivers acknowledge that but say they are feeling the impacts more.

 

Daniel Suarez remains confident that NASCAR will find solutions for the drivers.

 

“It is a bit concerning that the impact that our friend Kurt Busch had in Pocono had this kind of results,” Suarez said. “The impact didn’t look that hard, but NASCAR has a very big group of smart people working on that, and I’m sure they’re going to find answers to the questions we have.”

Byron Thanks First Responders, Others after Transporter Fire

The No. 24 Acronis Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 That William Byron Will
Drive This Weekend at The Road Course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

 

William Byron took to social media to thank first responders, his team and those in the NASCAR community for their quick help following a generator fire that damaged the No. 24 transporter outside Indianapolis Motor Speedway. 

 

A huge thank you to everyone who helped out with the 24 hauler today including the track, NASCAR, the local fire department and other team hauler drivers. Everyone jumped in and helped our team out today and that support means a lot to all of us on the 24 team.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred Thursday while the transporter was stationed near the track prior to entering for the race weekend. The specific cause of the fire has not been determined.

 

The No. 24 Acronis Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and team equipment for Sunday's road course race were not damaged. Hendrick Motorsports sent a backup transporter to Indianapolis from its Concord, North Carolina, campus on Friday morning.

 

Entering this weekend’s race, Byron is one of five drivers with multiple wins - two - on the season. Sunday’s event at the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be the first of two this season with Acronis as the primary partner on the No. 24.
