ARCA Menards Series Competitors Seek to Conquer the Monster Mile

#ARCA Menards Series Competitors Seek to Conquer the Monster Mile

ARCA Menards Series Competitors Seek to Conquer the Monster Mile

The first of four combination events the ARCA Menards Series East shares with the national division to close out 2025 begins this weekend at Dover Motor Speedway, a facility that has more than earned its moniker as ‘The Monster Mile’.

Despite being a mile in length, what separates Dover from other similar facilities is its corners banked at 24 degrees. Precision and care are imperative to navigate the self-cleaning banking, as one wrong move could end not only one driver’s day, but several others attempting to avoid the chaos.

Although Dover has existed for over five decades, the ARCA Menards Series platform did not visit the track until 2020 when it took over sanctioning for the East Series, which had a presence there since 1987. The list of East Series winners at Dover includes names like Jimmy Spencer, Bubba Wallace, Austin Hill, Sam Mayer and Ty Gibbs.

Last year was the first time the national ARCA Menards Series competed at Dover alongside the East Series, with Connor Zilisch taking the checkered flag. Drivers from both divisions will once again seek to emerge victorious at the Monster Mile and gain momentum, especially with the East Series title fight entering its home stretch.

Truex Brothers Sweep Dover

Truex Brothers Sweep Dover

It’s a Truex Takeover in Dover

Truex Sweep (photo by Rolando @RTR_Graphics97)

You could say NASCAR’s stop at Dover (De.) Motor Speedway was “All in the Family;” a kin-to-win kind of weekend. Martin Truex Jr. answered his younger brother Ryan’s NASCAR Xfinity Series victory on Saturday with a win in Monday’s rain-delayed Wurth 400 NASCAR Cup Series race – the fourth win of his career at the one-mile oval he considers his “home track.”

Truex, who started 17th in the 36-car field after qualifying was cancelled due to weather, methodically worked his way forward in the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. The 42-year-old New Jersey native finally took the lead for the first time with 69 laps remaining and led all but one of those final laps to claim his first points-paying victory of the season, ending a 54-race winless streak.

He and his JGR pit crew ultimately had to earn the win with pit strategy and pit execution. On a pit stop during the race’s final caution period, Truex’s team opted to put only right-side tires on his Toyota. With the quick stop, he was able to beat the field back out to the track and then on the ensuing re-start – with seven laps to go – hold off a hard-charging Ross Chastain, whose No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet had taken four fresh tires on the stop.

“It feels incredible,’’ Truex said. “I feel like we’ve been close a bunch of times, that’s for sure. Felt today, with that caution, what’s going to happen here and then good call by [crew chief] James [Small] to take two (tires) and then I was able to get a pretty good re-start.

“Just thanks to everybody that stuck with me. … we knew we could do this. We’ve shown we can lead laps and have dominated races and it just never all came together. I’ve said we just had to keep doing what we were doing and not overthink it.’’

“It’s just special, you know,’’ Truex said. “This is a special place. Good day for my family and to see Ryan win Saturday he’s worked so hard for so long to get good opportunities and it’s awesome.

“And then for us, we’ve given away a few here over the years so it’s nice to see it come around our way. Just excited and had a hot rod. Just needed to get it out front.”

This win marks the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion Ryan Truex’s 32nd career win and first since a victory at Richmond, Va. on Sept. 11, 2021. Snapping the streak and sharing Dover’s Victory Circle with his younger brother, Ryan, truly made the week for the veteran.

Thirty-One year old Ryan Truex led a dominating 124 of the 200 laps on Saturday. He swept both stage wins and ultimately took the checkered flag an impressive 4.8-seconds ahead of the field to claim his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory in the ‘A-GAME 200.’

“I’m just so thankful, all these fans, my team, they really stuck behind me,” said a smiling and emotional Truex, who becomes the 13th different NASCAR Xfinity Series driver to claim his first win at Dover.

“Most people didn’t believe in me, and I still did – my girlfriend, my family, my parents, my brother did. I’m just so thankful to be here.

“I felt like with 20 to go, I was just waiting for something to happen,’’ he continued, ‘just praying, please God keep everything straight and let’s get to the end of this. What a car, what an amazing Toyota Supra. I’m speechless.

“I thought I’d be more emotional right now, but when I crossed the flag I couldn’t even talk on the radio and I’m not an emotional guy. This is for everyone that doubted me.”

Ryan Truex Wins First Career Xfinity Race

Ryan Truex Wins First Career Xfinity Race

On Hometown Track - Dover Motor Speedway

Of all the places for Ryan Truex to absolutely turn in a career day, the 31-year-old led a dominating 124 of the 200 laps at his hometown Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway.  He swept both stage wins and ultimately took the checkered flag an impressive 4.8-seconds ahead of the field to claim his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series victory in Saturday’s A-GAME 200.

It was such a big day for the 31-year-old who has raced in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series – primarily part-time – for nine seasons and is scheduled to only make a handful of starts in 2023. Yet he parlayed this part-time opportunity driving the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota into a hugely sentimental victory at a special place – one the Mayetta, N.J. native has always claimed as his “home track.’’

Just before steering his Toyota into Dover’s Victory Lane, he stopped and was greeted by his older brother, NASCAR Cup Series driver Martin Truex Jr. – the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion, who similarly earned his first victory in that series at Dover back in 2007.

Ryan made his Xfinity Series debut as an 18-year-old driving for Michael Waltrip in 2010, and has since made 73 assorted starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series as well.

And now he is a bona fide winner in one of NASCAR’s headline series.

“I belong here, and I just proved that,’’ said Truex, whose 124 laps out front Saturday were more than his previous career total (67) in 88 starts.

“I’ve known it for a while and people around me have known it for a while. And now everyone in this garage area knows it. My goal is to drive a race car fulltime next year and hopefully we can make it happen.’’

Next up today on the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule is Dover Motor Speedway for Sunday’s DuraMAX Drydene 400 presented by RelaDyne (3 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio); the 11th race of the year.

Aptly nicknamed the Monster Mile, Dover Motor Speedway is a one-mile concrete paved oval located in Dover, Delaware. Dover Motor Speedway, originally known as Dover Downs International Speedway, has hosted 103 NASCAR Cup Series races dating back to the inaugural event on July 6, 1969. The first Dover Cup Series race was won by NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty driving a Petty Enterprises Ford (115.772 mph, 02:35:28). Petty actually won the first two Cup events at the track (1969, 1970).

In total, the 103 NASCAR Cup Series races at Dover Motor Speedway have produced 42 different pole winners and 39 different race winners. NASCAR Hall of Famer David Pearson leads the series in poles at Dover Motor Speedway with six (1969, 1973 sweep, 1974, 1975, 1981). Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin leads all active series drivers in poles at Dover with four (2012, 2013, 2015, 2019). Seven of the 42 NASCAR Cup Series Dover Motor Speedway pole winners are active this weekend.

Recently retired driver, Jimmie Johnson, holds the NASCAR Cup Series record for the most wins at Dover Motor Speedway with 11 victories (2002 sweep, 2005 Playoffs, 2009 sweep, 2010 Playoffs, Spring of 2012, 2013 Playoffs, Spring of 2014, Spring of 2015, and Spring of 2017). Three drivers are tied for the most wins among active competitors at Dover – Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch – each have three wins. Of the 39 different NASCAR Cup Series winners at Dover Motor Speedway, nine are active this weekend.

Taylor Gray takes ARCA East Victory

'General Tire 125' Results

Taylor Gray takes #ARCA East Victory

Taylor Gray grabbed the momentum his race team was seeking in a big way Friday at Dover Motor Speedway.

And his reward was a new Monster Trophy to display.

Gray led 115 of 125 laps and cruised to his first victory at the Monster Mile with a victory in the General Tire 125 ARCA Menards Series East race.

It was the first ARCA Menards Series East victory of the year for Gray, 17, a New Mexico native, who has also made two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts this year.

Gray has top-three finishes in all three AMSE races so far in 2022 but Friday marked his first trip to Victory Lane.

“Hard work has paid off, finally,” Gray said. “We’ll take this momentum and go to Nashville [next race in series is May 7] and see what we can do.

“We’ve been working hard and making gains.”

Gray, driving the No. 17 Ford for David Gilliland Racing, topped second-place Jesse Love by 1.456 seconds at the checkered flag, with Conner Jones in third and Rajah Caruth in fourth.

Sammy Smith, who entered Friday as the ARCA Menards Series points leader after winning the season’s first two races, finished fifth.

Gray, who earned the pole position with a track record lap of 160.915 mph earlier on Friday.

And after capping a long day at Dover with a big victory, Gray already has a place in mind to keep his newly-won Monster Trophy.

“It’s a super cool trophy, probably one of my favorite trophies on the circuit,” Gray said. “It’s probably going to go right in my living room.”

Dover Motor Speedway partners with General Tire #ARCA Menards Series East Race

General Tire is the entitlement sponsor of the ARCA Menards Series East race on Friday, April 29, at Dover Motor Speedway, the opening race of the Monster Mile’s NASCAR tripleheader weekend this spring, track and company officials said today.

For the fourth consecutive year, the General Tire 125 ARCA Menards Series East race will take the green flag on the high‐banked, one‐mile concrete oval at Dover.

General Tire has manufactured tires for American passenger and commercial vehicles for more than 100 years, since its founding in Ohio in 1915 as The General Tire & Rubber Company.

“We are proud to continue our partnership at the iconic Monster Mile,” said Travis Roffler, director of marketing for General Tire. “Over the past three years we’ve seen some action-packed racing at the Dover venue, so we are thrilled to sponsor this event again. As we’ve continued to support the ARCA Menards Series since we first became a partner in 2016, our track partnerships help to expand both of our brands even more.”

The ARCA Menards Series East has been a staple of Dover Motor Speedway’s race calendar every year since 2001. Past Dover winners in ARCA Menards Series East events include Aric Almirola, Harrison Burton and Bubba Wallace

In recent years, the ARCA Menards Series East served as a proving ground for top drivers such as William Byron, Justin Haley and Joey Logano. Ty Gibbs won the 2021 General Tire 125 at Dover.

“The General Tire 125 is a terrific opening race for our big tripleheader weekend this spring,” said Mike Tatoian, Dover Motor Speedway’s president. “We appreciate General Tire’s continued support of our Speedway and the development of talented, young drivers in the ARCA Menards Series East division. We look forward to our fans returning to the Monster Mile for another exciting race weekend at our venue.”

The April 29-May 1 NASCAR tripleheader weekend also includes the DuraMAX Drydene 400 presented by RelaDyne NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, May 1 (3 p.m., FS1) and the A-GAME 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash race on Saturday, April 30 (1:30 p.m., FS1).

Ty Gibbs is Perfect in Return to the Monster Mile.

Race Winner Ty Gibbs is Perfect in Return to the Monster Mile.

A year after watching a sure win get away at Dover International Speedway following late-race contact with the wall, the 18-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, put together a perfect day Friday in the ARCA Menards Series’ return to the “Monster Mile.”

Gibbs was fastest in practice, won the General Tire Pole Award, and led very lap en route to the win in the General Tire 125.

A wreck ended his day last year, after he led a race-high 110 laps. Friday, the 18-year-old from Charlotte, North Carolina, returned to Dover International Speedway for ARCA Menards Series East’s General Tire 125.

He won the General Tire Pole Award with a lap of 23.168 seconds (155.387 mph) around the concrete mile track in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
