Elliott Survives Wild Overtime to Win Kansas Playoff Race

 

In the last few feet of race track in the second overtime Sunday afternoon, Chase Elliott came from oblivion to steal the Hollywood Casino 400 Presented by ESPN Bet and earn a berth in the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

 

As his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet sped wide open through the final corner on Lap 273 at Kansas Speedway, Elliott’s car bounced off the side of Denny Hamlin’s Toyota on the way to the finish line.

 

Elliott, who restarted eighth for the final two-lap shootout, got to the stripe 0.069 seconds ahead of Hamlin, who led 159 laps and drove the final stretch of the second Round of 12 playoff race without benefit of power steering.

 

“Everything worked out perfect for me,” said Elliott, who picked up his second win of the season, his second at Kansas and the 21st of his career. “Had a great push through (Turns) 1 and 2. That kind of all started with the 6 (Brad Keselowski). Big run off of 2. Seas kind of parted and just was able to keep my momentum up. That was really it …

 

“I wasn’t going to lift, so I didn’t know what was going to happen. I figured at the end of the day, it was what it was at that point. We were both wide open corner exit. Wherever I ended up, I ended up. At that point, we were all committed.”

 

Denny Hamlin finished second; Christopher Bell placed third; Chase Briscoe came in fourth and Bubba Wallace completed the top five.

Brandon Jones Tames Kansas, Punches Spot in Xfinity Round Of 8 with Victory

 

With a flawlessly executed race from start to finish, Brandon Jones preserved his bragging rights at Kansas Speedway, winning Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs event.

 

The only driver in the field to have won a previous Xfinity race at the 1.5-mile intermediate track, Jones pulled away during the final 38-lap green-flag run and beat runner-up rookie sensation Connor Zilisch to the finish line by 2.787 seconds.

 

With the victory, his second of the season, his third at Kansas and the seventh of his career, Jones claimed a berth in the Round of 8. Zilisch and defending series champion Justin Allgaier also advanced to the next round on points.

 

“That was exactly like how we needed that to go down,” said Jones, who started from the pole, led 54 of 200 laps and finished second in each of the first two stages. “Two really solid stages – no mistakes. The entire day was so well executed. That’s probably by far in my career my most well-executed race.

 

“I’m so proud of these guys (his No.20 Joe Gibbs Racing team). We worked so hard all week to get here and put a race like this together.”

 

Connor Zilisch finished second; Austin Hill placed third; Sammy Smith came in fourth and Sheldon Creed completed the top five.

Brenden Queen Makes Magic Happen in Kansas for his 8th ARCA Menards Series Victory of 2025

 

Brenden Queen always seems to find his way to the front when it matters most.

 

It was more of the same Friday night in the Reese’s 150 for the ARCA Menards Series at Kansas Speedway, where Queen took the lead late and survived two overtime restarts to secure his eighth victory of a season that is all but sure to end next week with a championship for the 27-year-old from Chesapeake, Virginia.

 

“What a rookie campaign,” said Queen, who needs only start the finale next Saturday at Toledo Speedway to clinch the 2025 ARCA Menards Series championship. “One more race left. Maybe we can get nine (wins), but I think we’re closing in on what the main prize is.”

 

Giovanni Ruggiero finished second; Leland Honeyman placed third; Kris Wright came in fourth and Taylor Reimer completed the top five.

Denny Hamlin Steals Darlington Victory on Throwback Weekend

 

A perfectly executed overtime restart by Denny Hamlin following a clutch final pit stop by his Joe Gibbs Racing crew provided exactly the advantage the veteran needed to claim the trophy in Sunday’s NASCAR Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway.

 

Hamlin took the race lead out of the pits during the final late-race caution then bested the field on the ensuing restart, pulling his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota out front and ultimately to a 0.597-second victory over the day’s most dominant driver, Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron.

 

It’s the second-consecutive victory for Hamlin, who won last week at Martinsville, and it marks the first time he’s won back-to-back races since 2012 when he won at Bristol and then Atlanta the following week.

 

All smiles as he climbed out of the car, Hamlin gave all the credit to his pit crew. He was in third place at the time of the final caution — the yellow coming out for Byron’s Hendrick teammate Kyle Larson’s spin. The leaders seized the chance to pit for fresh Goodyear tires in anticipation of the overtime restart and Hamlin’s crew got him out of the pits first — ahead of 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick and Byron.

 

A perfect launch on the ensuing green flag gave Hamlin the victory over Byron, who led a race-best 243 of the 297 laps. It is Hamlin’s 56th career win, breaking a tie with NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace for 11th place on NASCAR’s all-time wins list.

 

“There’s two people I really love right now: my pit crew and Kyle Larson,” the 44-year-old Virginian Hamlin said with a grin. “Had a little assist there, so thank you.

 

“The pit crew just did an amazing job. They won it last week [at Martinsville]. They won it this week. It’s all about them.”

Brandon Jones Snaps 98-Race Winless Streak

 

After diligently working through a 98-race winless streak over the last three NASCAR Xfinity Series seasons, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Brandon Jones reminded his competitors — and his fans — Saturday that he’s still a race winner and a title contender.

 

The well-liked 28-year-old Atlanta native took the lead on a restart with 12 laps remaining in Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 at the historic Darlington Raceway — beating 2020 Cup Series champion Chase Elliott to the finish line by a healthy 1.105-second margin to hoist his first trophy since the Martinsville spring race on April, 8, 2022 — a span of 98 races.

 

The 1.366-mile Darlington track may be nicknamed “Too Tough to Tame,” but it certainly presented a tamer race than the series produced a week ago on the typically wild Martinsville half-miler. This weekend featured 14 lead changes among nine drivers — none of the changes up front a result of overly aggressive driving.

 

Instead, strategy, a fast car and unwavering belief in himself and his team made the difference for Jones.

 

“It’s nice for my confidence, right, but it’s also to prove to the haters and people that said I was incapable of doing it, wrong again,” said Jones, whose No. 20 JGR Toyota led 24 of the race’s 137 laps.

 

“This place is freaking awesome man, I love coming to Darlington,” he added, “Second win and just huge momentum. I knew we were on a high, just didn’t know when it was going to happen.”

Tanner Reif Saves His Tires, Makes Late Pass to Win West Series' Return to Tucson Speedway

 

Going slow to go fast is the best way to describe Tanner Reif’s Saturday night at Tucson Speedway.

 

Reif started third, rode at the back of the field for most of the race, then roared to the lead with two laps to go to win the ARCA Menards Series West 150 presented by the West Coast Stock Car Motorsports Hall of Fame.

 

“Everything was perfect,” Reif said in Victory Lane. “I had to work so hard for it, but this team, Central Coast Cabinets Racing, did such a good job setting this thing up. I was crying in the car. I had to compose myself.”

 

Saturday’s event, the first West Series race at Tucson since 2019, was an excellent example of an old-school tire saving race.

Sam Mayer heads west to Texas Motor Speedway for his fourth start at the 1.5-mile track and the second race of the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. The Franklin, Wis. native has scored one top-five and two top-10 efforts at the quad-oval with his best of third coming in the spring of 2022. Mayer's average finish at the Fort Worth facility is 8.0. He currently sits 10th in points, a mere 14 markers out of the cutoff spot with two races remaining. Mayer's Chevrolet will be carrying the blue and black colors of Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions on the No. 1 entry.

 

Sam Mayer: "Texas is another one of my better tracks and I'm looking forward to having a chance to get our momentum going in the right direction. We have had really fast cars these past few weeks but not a whole lot of luck, so hopefully we can turn that around this weekend in Texas and make some gains."

 

Justin Allgaier

 

By virtue of last weekend's victory at Bristol Motor Speedway, Justin Allgaier has advanced into the Round of 8 in the NXS Playoffs for the eighth consecutive season. The Illinois native has gone to Victory Lane in two of the last four races (Daytona and Bristol). In 25 NXS starts at Texas, Allgaier has scored five top fives and 13 top 10s. Allgaier has placed fourth or better in three of the last four starts at the 1.5-mile quad-oval, equating to a 3.3 average finish in those three events. His best effort was a runner-up finish in 2021.

 

Justin Allgaier: "We have been really strong at Texas the past couple of seasons, and I know that we will have that same speed again this weekend. Having already advanced into the next round of the playoffs is a great feeling and it really gives us an opportunity to take some chances that some of the other guys are not able to. Hopefully we will be able to execute the same way we have been and be up front going for the win and those extra playoff points when it counts on Saturday with our Reese's Ice Cream / Sam's Club Chevrolet."

 

Josh Berry

 

Josh Berry heads to Texas needing to gain 24 points on the line for advancement with two races yet to run in the Round of 12. In three previous starts on the 1.5-mile quad-oval, Berry's best finish is sixth, coming in this race last season. He has a pair of top-10 results in three starts and has led 46 laps there. On race tracks measuring 1.5 miles in NXS competition, Berry has three of his five victories, six top-five and 13 top-10 finishes and has led a combined 293 laps in 23 total starts. He is a previous winner at Las Vegas (twice) and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

 

Josh Berry: "We've run well at Texas in the past and there's no reason we can't continue that this weekend. This JARRETT team is working hard to make sure we unload with the speed we are capable of having. With the resin on the track, the line is going to change and we need to be ready for that to happen in order to put ourselves in a situation to score stage points throughout the day. I'm confident that we will be in contention Saturday as long as we put it all together."

 

Brandon Jones

 

Brandon Jones qualified on the pole in this event at Texas last season. The effort marked his seventh of eight career poles in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. At tracks measuring 1-2 miles in length in the NXS, Jones has recorded four wins, 19 top fives and 56 top 10s, while leading the field for a total of 377 laps . Jones has notched a pair of top 10s and an average finish of 7.5 when carrying Pelonis branding on the hood of the Menards Chevrolet in 2023.

 

Brandon Jones: "We have had a lot of speed as of late and I know this team is making sure that speed carries over to this weekend. I thought we had a car capable of winning last week and this No. 9 bunch has run up front at Texas more than not, so I'm confident that we will be near the front this weekend and hopefully battling for the win."

 

JRM's No. 9 team is the defending winner of this event. Last year the team qualified second and led 85 laps en route to its second overall victory in the Lonestar State.

JR Motorsports Revamps Crew Chief Lineup

Updated Roles, New Hires

 

JR Motorsports has revamped its crew chief roster for the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, the organization announced today. MoyerReturning veterans Jason Burdett and Taylor will assume crew chief duties with the Nos. 9 and 8 entries, respectively, while the addition of Jim Pohlman on the No. 7 and Mardy Lindley with the No. 1 team completes the crew chief lineup.

 

Entering his ninth season with JRM, Burdett is the company's winningest crew chief with 18 victories. Burdett, who led Justin Allgaier to Championship 4 appearances in five of the last seven seasons, will transition to the No. 9 Menards team with JRM's newest driver Brandon Jones. Through his first eight years with the company, Burdett racked up an impressive 110 top-five and 183 top-10 finishes.

 

Moyer moves to the No. 8 team with driver Josh Berry for 2023 to fill the role vacated by Mike Bumgarner, now serving as JRM’s director of competition. In 2019-20, Moyer served as crew chief of JRM’s No. 8 Chevrolet and its rotating roster of drivers. He has spent the past two seasons atop the pit box for Berry and Sam Mayer, leading Mayer to 12 top fives, 25 top 10s and a playoff berth through to the Round of 8 in 2022.

 

"As successful as 2022 was for JR Motorsports, we're always asking ourselves 'how can we be better?'" said Bumgarner, JRM's director of competition. "While we performed at a very high level this season, a tweak here or there can help push you even further. We were fortunate to bring in Jim (Pohlman) and Mardy (Lindley). Both have past success with their drivers and we expect that will aid in making a smooth transition."

 

A native of Oak Lawn, Illinois, the 43-year-old Pohlman comes to JRM by way of Richard Childress Racing to assume crew chief duties for the No. 7 BRANDT Professional Agriculture team and perennial championship contender Allgaier. In 2008, Pohlman helped Allgaier secure an ARCA Menards Series championship, so the pairing will be familiar. Pohlman also spent time at the Cup Series level, most notably as crew chief for Juan Pablo Montoya in 2011 with several opportunities along the way in both Cup and NXS competition.  

 

Additionally, Greenville, S.C. native Lindley, a decades-long veteran of the sport who spent the last two seasons at Kyle Busch Motorsports with six victories, joins Mayer in 2023 to lead the No. 1 team, reuniting the driver and crew chief for the first time since 2020. The Lindley / Mayer combination netted championships in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series (2019) and the ARCA Menards Series (2020). Together, the duo has more than 15 victories between the two series.

Brandon Jones led Friday’s A-GAME 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash qualifying session with a lap of 157.398 mph (22.872 seconds) at Dover Motor Speedway.

 

“I was surprised to see the lap time we laid down,” Jones said. “We were fast at practice. The track has a lot of grip this weekend.

 

“It’s a phenomenal start for us.”

Jones, 25, driving the No. 19 Toyota for owner Joe Gibbs, earned his second career pole at the Monster Mile, his first of the 2022 season and the fourth of his Xfinity Series career.

 

Sam Mayer was second fastest with a lap of 157.048 mph, followed by Josh Berry at 156.365 mph.

 

The A-GAME 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash race takes the green flag Saturday at 1:30 p.m. (FS1).

Brandon Jones - On a Roll Heading into Charlotte

Confidence Up after ARCA Win

Last night, Brandon Jones held off a late-race, spirited charge from Riley Herbst to win the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards General Tire 150 Thursday night under the lights at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Jones, in the No. 12 Mobil 1-TRD Toyota, had a 10-length lead inside of five laps to go when Herbst chopped it down to nothing coming to the white flag. Herbst got to the back bumper of Jones on the last lap but couldn't find a way around the eventual winner. Jones was able to use a lapped car to put two lengths in between himself and Herbst at the checkered flag.

"We gave it all we had…battling for the win," said Jones, who led thirty-two laps. "Every driver out there was putting it all on the line. This is just incredible. I've been to Charlotte so many times, but never been down in that winner's circle. We came to win it, and that's what we did."

Brandon Jones will make his eleventh NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) start with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) at Charlotte Motor Speedway (CMS) behind the wheel of the No. 19 Menards/Jeld-Wen Toyota Camry in the Alsco 300 tomorrow.

The twenty-one-year old Atlanta, Georgia native has been on a roll coming off his fourth consecutive top-10 finish, his first pole with JGR and a very impressive third place finish in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series last weekend with Kyle Busch Motorsports. He also tested his No. 19 Xfinity Camry earlier this month at CMS and of course won the ARCA last night.

“Coming off a top 10 run at Dover in the Xfinity Series and then getting a third-place finish in the Truck Series at Charlotte really has boosted my confidence. My team and I recently sat down and set some quarterly goals, which I feel will help us take the next step. Obviously our season-long goal is to make the playoffs, but these quarterly goals help break down that big goal into smaller pieces that are easier to attain on a step-by-step basis. As we prepare for Charlotte, I’m really going to focus on my line. The track has one of the trickiest turn 3 layouts on the circuit—arcing the corner too much, using too much throttle and not enough brakes can all be a big factor for that turn. Dover is Set for a Monster of a Good Xfinity Dash 4 Cash Finale

The 2018 version of the highly successful NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash 4 Cash program is reaching its crescendo this weekend at the famous Dover International Speedway in the OneMain Financial 200 on Saturday, May 5 (at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Four drivers qualified at Talladega for a chance to compete for the $100,000 bonus one last time this season - JR Motorsport’s Justin Allgaier and Elliott Sadler, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Brandon Jones and RSS Racing’s Ryan Sieg. Sieg was named as the fourth qualifier after Spencer Gallagher was disqualified due to a penalty announced after Talladega.

Elliott Sadler has been the most successful at banking the big checks this season, as he has brought home the last two Xfinity Dash 4 Cash bonuses (Richmond and Talladega). Joe Gibbs Racing’s Ryan Preece is only other driver to score the big Dash 4 Cash bonus this season when he won at Bristol a few weeks back.

Sadler’s been at the top of his game lately, in nine starts this season he has posted seven top-fives (series-most) and nine top-tens (series-most). He has made twenty starts at Dover and has finished in the top-ten in ten of his last twelve starts.

No stranger to winning the Dash 4 Cash is Justin Allgaier, who took home the big checks twice last season (Phoenix and Richmond) and this year is looking to make it two seasons in a row with at least one $100,00 bonus.

"Qualifying for the Dash 4 Cash is super important. Hats off to Xfinity and Comcast for all they do for the series," said Allgaier.

Justin Allgaier jumped from fifth to third in the points following his comeback run at Talladega on the final restart after running out of gas in the closing laps. He has now posted five top-fives and six top-tens this season. In fourteen series starts at the Monster Mile, he has posted four top-fives and seven top-tens; including a runner-up finish last fall.

Brandon Jones wrestled a runner-up finish from his competition in Talladega to qualify for this weekend’s Dash 4 Cash, his series career-best. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver is eighth in the championship standings and in nine starts he has posted five top-tens. He has four starts at Dover with a best finish of seventeenth in 2016.

RSS Racing’s Ryan Sieg finished sixth at Talladega to qualify for the Dash 4 Cash this weekend at Dover. Sieg is fifteenth in the series standings after posting one top-ten and an average finish of 19.7. Sieg has made eight series starts at Dover posting best finish of thirteenth in 2014; he finished sixteenth in this race last season.

All four Dash 4 Cash qualifiers this weekend are solid competitors this season and currently in the top 10 in series championship standings. Amongst the four Dash 4 Cash qualifiers this weekend, Elliott Sadler (11.8) has the best average finish, followed by Justin Allgaier (12.7), Ryan Sieg (16.1) and Brandon Jones (27.5).

#NASCAR Industry to Salute U.S. Military Units with #XFINITY Series Tribute

An American Salute Continues Independence Day Weekend; Daytona International Speedway to Host Medal of Honor Recipients, Active Service Members and Veterans

 

“NASCAR’s long-standing tradition of honoring the U.S. Armed Forces will never waver – it is woven into the fabric of our sport,” said Brent Dewar, Chief Operating Officer, NASCAR. “We have a unique opportunity with the NASCAR XFINITY Series to pay tribute to the military units and bases integral to preserving our country’s freedom.”

Several NASCAR XFINITY Series teams have personal or direct connections to the units displayed on their race cars. Driver Brendan Gaughan’s windshield will read “23RD STS,” representing the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron (U.S. Air Force) from Hurlburt Field in Fort Walton, Fla. Gaughan is one of a handful of civilians recognized as an Honorary Member of the Combat Control Association.

Elliott Sadler’s windshield will be adorned with Fort Campbell to honor JR Motorsports employee Lee Langley, who served for six years at the Army base as an infantry team leader in the 101st Airborne Division. Ty Dillon and Brandon Jones both work with Hope 4 Warriors and will honor 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines and 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines, respectively, from Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C.

Justin Allgaier will honor the U.S. Air Force 469th Flight Training Squadron through a personal connection, as Allgaier is friends with Major Robert Harms, one of the pilots serving in that specific unit. The squadron operates out of Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.

“I always look forward to getting a chance to pay homage those who serve our country at Daytona each year,” said Allgaier. “We’re thankful to Comcast for providing the space on all of our cars to support these military heroes and to NASCAR for continuing their NASCAR Salutes program. This year there’s a personal tie for me as I get to display the squadron of one of my friends. We love that we’re able to support our military, but a sticker or event will never be enough to truly give them all the credit they deserve for what they do.”

The special windshield tribute is one of several military activities planned for the Independence Day weekend races at Daytona International Speedway, culminating with Saturday’s Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola (7:45 p.m. ET on NBC, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

The race track will again host and recognize three recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award given to military service members, continuing a tradition dating back several years. The Medal of Honor recipients in attendance this weekend will include Staff Sergeant Ty Carter, Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell and Captain Florent Groberg, each representing the U.S. Army.

NASCAR, together with Daytona International Speedway and race teams, will host hundreds of active military and veterans, and their families, during the race weekend. Among them will be the 65th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army, nicknamed “The Borinqueneers,” a Puerto Rican regiment that was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in April.

Several active military members present for Saturday’s Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola will take part in a special moment of recognition for the U.S. Armed Forces before the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.

Pre-race activities will also feature a flyover of four F-16s from the 93rd Fighter Squadron from Homestead Air Reserve Base during the national anthem, which will be performed by the U.S. Army Maneuver Center of Excellence Band from Fort Benning, Ga. The national anthem will be performed as 200 military members unfurl a giant American flag in the infield.

Retired U.S. Air Force Sergeant Kelly Miller will be grand marshal for Friday’s Subway Firecracker 250 Powered By Coca-Cola. A Subway franchisee, Miller served as an aeromedical service specialist, responsible for the healthcare of Air Force pilots and flight crews. Retired Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Fred Gardner, also a Subway franchisee, will serve as the honorary starter. Gardner operated the Terrier missile first control system during Mediterranean tours.
