Casey Mears, BJ McLeod Claim Final Daytona 500 Spots

Joey Logano won the fourth America 250 Florida Duel of his career on Thursday night to secure a third-place starting spot in Sunday’s Daytona 500 (2:30 p.m. ET, FOX, HBO Max, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

“Just a lot of teamwork all the way through,” Logano said of the win. “I think about the 22 team in particular. Nick Hensley, our gas man, did a fantastic job getting us in position out of pit road. (Spotter) Coleman Pressley up on the roof giving us great information. My teammate Ryan Blaney being committed and working together.

 

“It’s nice when everything works out the way it’s supposed to.”

 





In a second Duel that ran caution-free, Chase Elliott took control of the race on Lap 53 of 60 and held off Carson Hocevar by 0.065 seconds to win his third 150-mile qualifying race and earn the fourth starting position for the Daytona 500.

“A great way to get the blood pumping for sure on a Thursday night,” said Elliott, who is seeking his first Daytona 500 win. “There was a lot going on those last handful (of laps). Really, ever since we came off of pit road after the cycle, we were getting after it. It was a lot of fun.

 





Casey Mears came from a lap down to earn the one Open position in the Daytona 500 available from the first Duel. Mears advanced when fellow Open competitor Corey LaJoie — running in the top five at the time — turned into the outside wall in a chain-reaction collision on the final lap of overtime.

 

Anthony Alfredo had a relatively stress-free run to claim the Daytona 500 spot available to Open cars in the second Duel, or so he thought. Though Alfredo finished 18th, 23 seconds ahead of BJ McLeod — the next-best Open driver — his finish was disallowed after post-race inspection, and McLeod will compete in the “Great American Race” on Sunday.

 

According to NASCAR Cup Series director Brad Moran, a transmission cooling hose on Alfredo’s No. 62 Chevrolet was not fastened properly, and another hose was disconnected, affecting both cooling and airflow.

In the last few feet of race track in the second overtime Sunday afternoon, Chase Elliott came from oblivion to steal the Hollywood Casino 400 Presented by ESPN Bet and earn a berth in the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

 

As his No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet sped wide open through the final corner on Lap 273 at Kansas Speedway, Elliott’s car bounced off the side of Denny Hamlin’s Toyota on the way to the finish line.

 

Elliott, who restarted eighth for the final two-lap shootout, got to the stripe 0.069 seconds ahead of Hamlin, who led 159 laps and drove the final stretch of the second Round of 12 playoff race without benefit of power steering.

 

“Everything worked out perfect for me,” said Elliott, who picked up his second win of the season, his second at Kansas and the 21st of his career. “Had a great push through (Turns) 1 and 2. That kind of all started with the 6 (Brad Keselowski). Big run off of 2. Seas kind of parted and just was able to keep my momentum up. That was really it …

 

“I wasn’t going to lift, so I didn’t know what was going to happen. I figured at the end of the day, it was what it was at that point. We were both wide open corner exit. Wherever I ended up, I ended up. At that point, we were all committed.”

 

Denny Hamlin finished second; Christopher Bell placed third; Chase Briscoe came in fourth and Bubba Wallace completed the top five.

Brandon Jones Tames Kansas, Punches Spot in Xfinity Round Of 8 with Victory

 

With a flawlessly executed race from start to finish, Brandon Jones preserved his bragging rights at Kansas Speedway, winning Saturday’s Kansas Lottery 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs event.

 

The only driver in the field to have won a previous Xfinity race at the 1.5-mile intermediate track, Jones pulled away during the final 38-lap green-flag run and beat runner-up rookie sensation Connor Zilisch to the finish line by 2.787 seconds.

 

With the victory, his second of the season, his third at Kansas and the seventh of his career, Jones claimed a berth in the Round of 8. Zilisch and defending series champion Justin Allgaier also advanced to the next round on points.

 

“That was exactly like how we needed that to go down,” said Jones, who started from the pole, led 54 of 200 laps and finished second in each of the first two stages. “Two really solid stages – no mistakes. The entire day was so well executed. That’s probably by far in my career my most well-executed race.

 

“I’m so proud of these guys (his No.20 Joe Gibbs Racing team). We worked so hard all week to get here and put a race like this together.”

 

Connor Zilisch finished second; Austin Hill placed third; Sammy Smith came in fourth and Sheldon Creed completed the top five.

Brenden Queen Makes Magic Happen in Kansas for his 8th ARCA Menards Series Victory of 2025

 

Brenden Queen always seems to find his way to the front when it matters most.

 

It was more of the same Friday night in the Reese’s 150 for the ARCA Menards Series at Kansas Speedway, where Queen took the lead late and survived two overtime restarts to secure his eighth victory of a season that is all but sure to end next week with a championship for the 27-year-old from Chesapeake, Virginia.

 

“What a rookie campaign,” said Queen, who needs only start the finale next Saturday at Toledo Speedway to clinch the 2025 ARCA Menards Series championship. “One more race left. Maybe we can get nine (wins), but I think we’re closing in on what the main prize is.”

 

Giovanni Ruggiero finished second; Leland Honeyman placed third; Kris Wright came in fourth and Taylor Reimer completed the top five.

For many decades, Sonoma Raceway has been a significant race for ARCA Menards Series West competitors every time the venue appears on the calendar.

 

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, West Series drivers competed in a combination event with the NASCAR Cup Series at Sonoma once a year. Although the West Series now only has as a support event for the Cup Series weekend, the opportunity still exists for regulars to prove themselves against the upcoming generation of stars.

 

Seven of the last 10 West Series events at Sonoma have been won by a driver who has competed full-time in either the Cup Series or NASCAR Xfinity Series. The list of Sonoma West Series winners comprises names like Kevin Harvick, Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Chase Briscoe and Sam Mayer, who emerged victorious in last year’s race.

 

As has become tradition with the West Series event at Sonoma, Friday is set to be a battle between the championship contenders and drivers seeking to gain experience. With the top five in the standings only separated by 18 points, a strong run at Sonoma is crucial toward sustaining momentum in the West Series title hunt.

Chase Elliott Wins Wild, Action-Packed Race at EchoPark Speedway

 

Timing his pass on the last lap to perfection, Georgia native Chase Elliott charged past Brad Keselowski and held off the driver of the No. 6 Ford to win Saturday night’s Quaker State 400 at Echo Park Speedway. 

The popular victory in the first event of the NASCAR Cup Series ‘In-Season Challenge’ broke a 44-race drought for Elliott dating to last year’s win at Texas Motor Speedway. The win was the second at EchoPark for the driver of the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet and the 20th of his career.

 

Elliott crossed the finish line 0.168 seconds ahead of Keselowski and 0.170 seconds in front of teammate and third-place finisher Alex Bowman.

 

“Unbelievable … unbelievable. How about that? Are you kidding me?” Elliott said with an uncharacteristic display of emotion. “I’ve never in my life. … This is unbelievable. Thank you guys so much.

 

“What a special car, and just a huge thanks to NAPA Auto Parts and everything they do for me and to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Rhealynn Mills, a cancer patient designed the fast NAPA Chevrolet tonight, so this was a lot of fun. This right here is something I’ll never forget.”

Nick Sanchez Earns First Career Xfinity Series Win

 

Nick Sanchez charged to the front after a restart with seven laps left in Friday night’s Focused Health 250 and held off fellow Sunoco rookie Carson Kvapil to secure his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory.

 

Sanchez, who rallied from a spin through the frontstretch grass at EchoPark Speedway on Lap 68, lost the top spot to Jesse Love on the final restart on Lap 157 of 163, but regained it on the following circuit.

 

Sanchez spent the next five laps doing everything in his power to keep Kvapil behind him. The win earned the 24-year-old from Miami, Fla., a berth in the Xfinity Series Playoffs.

 

“It’s a weight lifted off my shoulders, that’s for sure,” Sanchez said after climbing from his car on the front stretch. “Now we can go chase checkered flags.”

Corey Heim’s victory in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series’ debut at Lime Rock Park wasn’t just a case of domination. It was an eyelash away from perfection.

 

Heim led 99 of 100 laps at the 1.478-mile road course in bucolic Lakeville, Connecticut, to win the LiUNA! 150 — his fifth victory of the season and the 16th of his career.

 

“Yeah, that was nothing short of incredible,” Heim acknowledged. “These road courses — I really look forward to them, pre-event and whatnot, and I really prepare for them, so to see all that pay off with Safelite, Tricon, Toyota, it’s super special.

Thomas Annunziata Perseveres to Score His First ARCA Win

 

Thomas Annunziata, who qualified on the General Tire Pole with a blazing lap Friday, crossed the finish line first Saturday to score his maiden ARCA Menards Series win in just his fifth start. He did so despite getting spun on the first corner of the race.

 

“It means a lot, especially after what happened in the (NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series) race,” said Annunziata, who also competed in Saturday’s LiUNA! 150. “We got taken out at the beginning of this race, too. I wasn’t very cool, and (my team) helped me stay calm.

 

“I can’t thank Toyota, Nitro Motorsports, Venturini enough for taking the chance on me. This is the first time I’m in real winning equipment, and I get to showcase my talent. There was no better way to win that than to go back to last and have to make a comeback.”

Chase Elliott of Hendrick Motorsports won in double overtime to snap a 42-race winless streak and earn his first victory since Talladega Superspeedway on Oct. 2, 2022. It was his first Cup Series victory in 14 starts at Texas Motor Speedway. … Texas Motor Speedway has produced 22 or more lead changes in the last three races and seven of the last eight. The high during that stretch was a track-record 36 in 2022 when Tyler Reddick won. … Chevrolet is riding a four-race winning streak in large part to Hendrick Motorsports. The organization won in 2021 with Kyle Larson, ’23 with William Byron and Elliott last season. The other Chevy win came from Reddick in 2022 while with Richard Childress Racing. … Byron has finished among the top three in three of his last four visits, with a runner-up finish in 2021, a victory in ’23 and third last season. He also is riding a four-race, top-10 streak at TMS. … Brad Keselowski of RFK Racing arrives with a streak of six consecutive top-10 finishes, including a runner-up finish last season that matched his best performance in 29 starts at TMS. It may have taken Hendrick Motorsports a few years to visit victory lane at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but the organization has made up for lost time. 


With William Byron claiming a win at the 1.5-mile oval in 2021 and Kyle Larson following it up by prevailing in 2022, Hendrick Motorsports has claimed two of the last three events in southern Florida. 


Vice chairman and NASCAR Hall of Famer, Jeff Gordon, delivered the organization its first win at Homestead-Miami with Jimmie Johnson registering his record-tying seventh championship there in 2016, giving Hendrick Motorsports four wins since the track opened in 1999. 


Larson leads all active drivers with 625 laps led at Homestead and Chase Elliott is second in career average finish at 10.4.

The Chase Elliott Foundation is partnering again with NAPA and Hendrick Motorsports in a return to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the seventh edition of its “DESI9N TO DRIVE” art collaboration with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Children’s). Elliott's race car and race uniform, from head to toe, will feature designs by two cancer patients at Children's for the NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday, July 9.

 

“I’m excited for the return of the DESI9N TO DRIVE program to my home track since it really shines a light on the positive impact Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has on the region,” said Elliott, a Dawsonville, Ga. native. “With the race being run at night, I hope it creates an even greater atmosphere than years past. I can’t wait for everyone to see these summer nights-themed designs come to life at the race track.”

 

This year's DESI9N TO DRIVE program received dozens of submissions from patients at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children's. The selected designs were sketched by 11-year-old Alex Corbin and 13-year-old Kayleb Duran-Rodriguez.

 

After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2022, Alex went through surgeries, radiation, chemo, MRI tests, therapy, and now wears hearing aids due to side effects of chemo treatments. His design shows his love for smores on warm summer nights and will be depicted on Elliott’s Alpinestars racing suit, gloves, shoes, and Arai helmet.

 

Kayleb, diagnosed with Leukemia in 2020, designed Elliott’s No. 9 NAPA Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to show his love for campfires with friends and family.

 

“We are pleased to support this wonderful campaign and the kids at Children's  for another year,” said Marti Walsh, vice president of marketing, NAPA. “We’re so proud of our longstanding relationship with the Chase Elliott Foundation and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and are excited to see the impact this event has on the greater Atlanta community every year.”

 





The DESI9N TO DRIVE program has raised and donated over $350,000 to Children’s over its first six years.

 

Elliott's racing uniform and a VIP race experience are being auctioned off via The NASCAR Foundation’s auction page on eBay beginning Wednesday, July 5, and closing Wednesday, July 12, following the Atlanta race.

 

New for this year is the ability for fans to donate directly to the fundraising campaign starting today at desi9ntodrive.org.

 

All auction proceeds will go to the Chase Elliott Foundation to benefit the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s. In addition, a portion of the proceeds of each die-cast sold of the specially-designed race car will be donated with the auction proceeds and online donations.

 

“Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is thankful to collaborate with the Chase Elliott Foundation for the seventh year of DESI9N TO DRIVE,” said Beth Buursema, senior development director at the Children's Foundation. “We are very excited that two of our patients will have the chance to show off their creativity at an event that they will never forget. The Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is one of the largest pediatric cancer and blood disorders programs in the nation, caring for more than 8,900 pediatric patients every year. This continued collaboration will bring hope to our patients while furthering our mission of making kids better today and healthier tomorrow.”

Chase Elliott's start to NASCAR's annual West Coast Swing following Daytona got off to a good start with a runner-up finish at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The race marked the final time NASCAR will run on the 2-mile D-oval.

 

However, prior to heading to the next swing stop in Las Vegas, Chase suffered a leg injury while snowboarding in Colorado.

 

Elliott, the 2020 Cup Series champion, suffered the injury to his left leg today while snowboarding in Colorado. After a successful surgery, he's expected to miss six weeks before rejoining the series. Chase took to Twitter on Vegas race day to express his thanks for all the support.

 

Chase underwent a successful surgery on a fractured tibia, Hendrick Motorsports team president and general manager Jeff Andrews shared at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

 





Hendrick Motorsports has applied to NASCAR for a waiver for Elliott to remain eligible for the playoffs. Elliott is an eighteen (18) -time winner and the 2020 champion in the Cup Series. He has reached the Championship 4 in each of the last three seasons.

The spring race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway has been very, very good to Hendrick Motorsports the past two seasons.

 

Last year, Alex Bowman got the better of teammate Kyle Larson in an overtime finish as Hendrick Motorsports finished 1-2 in the race. A key two-tire call by crew chief Greg Ives set up the driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to start on the front row for the final restart. That race also saw all four Hendrick Motorsports cars finish inside the top 10 – something the team had only done one other time at Las Vegas in March of 2014.

 

"Winning Vegas last year was really good for us," Bowman said. "That has always been a really good racetrack for us. I feel like on paper it may not look it, but we’ve had some really great days there. Probably three or four would’ve-could’ve-should’ve won races there. It was good to finally get a win and hopefully we can go and back it up next time there."

 

The 29-year-old driver has had three top-six finishes in his last six runs at Las Vegas. That doesn’t include a 13th-place finish in the spring 2020 race, where he was battling for the lead prior to a late-race caution shaking up the strategy. He was also enjoying a top-10 run in the 2021 spring race before late-race misfortune took him out of contention. Bowman enters this weekend as one of four drivers with back-to-back top-10 finishes to open the season. With four top-10 finishes in his last five 1.5-mile starts, he has a great chance to extend that streak to start his time with new crew chief Blake Harris atop the box.

 

That 2021 race saw Larson get the first of 10 wins in his title season. The driver of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 led a race-high 103 laps en route to the victory. While that is his lone win at the Nevada venue, the Elk Grove, California, native has three other top-three finishes (including last year’s runner up) in the early-season race. His 11.15 average finish at the track is the fourth-best among all drivers.

 

"Vegas is a track that I like," Larson said. "It seems to be another one of those intermediate style tracks that suits my driving style because you can run different lanes. It has a lot of character with bumps and grip, so it's been a place that I have enjoyed. I've led some laps, won a race and had a few other close shots. I look forward to going there again this weekend and hopefully getting another Cup Series win."

 

Larson’s numbers at 1.5-mile tracks since coming over to Hendrick Motorsports in 2021 have been astronomical. His five wins, 13 stage wins, 1,642 laps led and average finish of 7.69 are all tops in the series over that span of time. In last season’s seven races on this track length, the 30-year-old driver earned the second-most points (261) – trailing only Ross Chastain.

 

William Byron’s  fifth-place result was a track-best finish for the Charlotte, North Carolina, native and his second straight top-10 finish in the spring race. He earned the fourth-most points on 1.5-mile tracks last season (234). While his 2023 season is not off to the start that the driver of the No. 24 RaptorTough.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 would like to have, he has run the ninth-most laps (182) in the top 10 this season.

 

Chase Elliott finished ninth for his fifth top-10 result at the facility and third top-10 in the spring. The finishes don’t fully tell the tale of how the 27-year-old has run at this 1.5-mile track. His 18 top-10 finishes in stages at Las Vegas are the second-most in the NASCAR Cup Series behind only Martin Truex Jr. In the 2020 race, the driver of the No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet led 70 laps and won both stages, before late-race trouble led to a 26th-place finish. He also led 22 laps in his 13th-place run in 2021. The Dawsonville, Georgia, native is coming off a runner-up finish at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

 

The recent success at Las Vegas feeds into the organization’s overall strength on 1.5-mile tracks. The squad has won at least one race on a 1.5-mile track in each of the last 29 seasons. The four-car brigade of Larson, Elliott, Byron and Bowman led 39% of the laps raced on that track length last year and its 705 laps led were the best mark in the series on 1.5-milers. The team was tied for the series lead in 2021 with two wins (Bowman at Las Vegas and Larson at Homestead-Miami Speedway) at 1.5-mile tracks and had the most stage wins (six).
