Inspirational Sam Schmidt to Speak

Inspirational Sam Schmidt to Speak

Famous Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society Luncheon

Inspirational Sam Schmidt to Speak

Sam Schmidt, winning INDYCAR team owner and the founder of Conquer Paralysis Now, will be the keynote speaker at the luncheon of the prestigious Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society (MASCDCS) in New York City on Tuesday, September 3.

In his speech, Schmidt will recount his inspiring life story that’s seen the Las Vegas resident bounce back from a tragic accident that left him a quadriplegic and ended his racing career to become a successful team owner and celebrated advocate for spinal cord injury research, treatment and an eventual cure.

Schmidt earned his first win as an IndyCar driver at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in September 1999. Just four months later, he was involved in a crash during testing where he sustained a C-3 level spinal cord injury. Determined not to let the setback slow him down, Schmidt soon ventured into race team ownership and founded the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit and the forerunner of Conquer Paralysis Now CPN).

In the ensuing years, CPN has raised more than $40 million to fund spinal cord injury scientific research, medical treatment, rehabilitation and technological advances that lead toward a cure. In 2018, CPN opened its first DRIVEN NeuroRecovery Center in Las Vegas,  where individuals with disabilities can improve their physical, mental and emotional health, increase independence, and enhance their overall quality of life using a holistic approach to wellness.

All the while, Schmidt built what began as Sam Schmidt Motorsports into a winning mainstay in the NTT INDYCAR Series. Now known as the Arrow McLaren team of which Schmidt is part owner, the team has partnered with McLaren’s Formula 1 team since 2021. Arrow McLaren fields three full-time cars this year in the NTT INDYCAR Series for drivers Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi and Nolan Siegel

“I am honored that the Madison Avenue Sports Car Driving and Chowder Society asked me to speak at their luncheon,” Schmidt said. “It’s a renowned organization known nationwide for its dedication to the automobile experience and these entertaining lunches. I am humbled to join the list of legendary speakers.”

MASCDCS was founded in 1957 as a way for like-minded individuals to gather and share their passion for sports cars and automobile competition. Members and speakers over the years have included the likes of Walter Cronkite, Brock Yates, Edsel Ford, Bill France Sr., Janet Guthrie, Bobby Rahal, Danny Sullivan, David Hobbs, Sam Posey and many more.

Jim Donick, Chairman of the Madison Avenue Sports car Driving and Chowder Society, is eager to add Schmidt to the impressive list of speakers.

“Sam is an inspiration, not just to motoring enthusiasts like the Chowder Society, but to the broader society,” Donick said. “His story is moving and we are happy to be able to share it to a wider audience.”

Sam Schmidt is a resident of the Las Vegas area. He was an IndyCar driver before suffering an injury in practice in January 2000 in which he sustained a C-3/4/5 spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic.

About Sam Schmidt

Sam Schmidt is a resident of the Las Vegas area. He was an IndyCar driver before suffering an injury in practice in January 2000 in which he sustained a C-3/4/5 spinal cord injury that left him a quadriplegic. He created the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation (SSPF) that year to raise funds for medical research, innovative equipment used for rehabilitation, and quality-of-life issues. In 2014, the foundation was rebranded as Conquer Paralysis Now with a mission to cure paralysis while assisting those who are already disabled. Today, besides chairing Conquer Paralysis Now, Sam is a highly successful businessperson and INDYCAR team co-owner with Arrow McLaren Racing.

Roger Penske: "We can see it already"

Kyle Larson Bringing Massive Following to IndyCar

Hendrick Motorsports driver Kyle Larson joins an elite list of NASCAR Cup Series drivers after deciding to double up on racing on Memorial Day weekend in 2024. Along with competing in the highest echelon of stock car racing, the #5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 driver will also be making his Indy 500 debut on the same day next season.

Larson will be seen running an Arrow McLaren SP car sponsored by Rick Hendrick during the 108th running of the famed open-wheel race held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With NASCAR topping the charts for popularity and viewership in the United States, the NTT IndyCar Series will also be benefitting from one of stock car racing's most successful drivers making his IndyCar debut.

NASCAR and IndyCar team owner Roger Penske spoke about the 'Kyle Larson effect' on 2024 ticket sales for the iconic 500-mile-long race. According to motorsport.com:

"We are so excited to see Larson come to the speedway, I know Rick (Hendrick) talked to me about running Larson and we hadn't had the success for a couple years. I think that his skill and his fan base in the Midwest is amazing. The interest from the fan base with (Kyle) Larson coming, we can see it already in our ticket sales. He'll be a great asset to Indianapolis and the 500," Roger Penske said.

Kyle Larson will be adding yet another crown jewel of motorsports as he chases the most sought-after titles in oval and dirt track racing. With a NASCAR Cup Series championship already under his belt, Larson has the potential to be the next Tony Stewart with an IndyCar championship win as well.

Daly To Race in the NASCAR ‘Pennzoil 150’

Daly To Race in the NASCAR ‘Pennzoil 150’

Daly To Race in the NASCAR ‘Pennzoil 150’ #NASCAR #INDY

NTT INDYCAR SERIES and Indianapolis 500 veteran Conor Daly will race in the ‘Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts’ NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday, Aug. 12 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

Daly, from nearby Noblesville, Indiana, will drive the No. 44 Chevrolet Camaro fielded by Alpha Prime Racing. Sponsors include insurance adjuster company AAN Adjusters, Inc. and Gilreath Farms, a grass-fed cattle purveyor.

“Really appreciate Team Alpha Prime giving me a chance at my home track on Brickyard Weekend,” Daly said in a social media post. “Will be fun to compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series again.”

Daly last competed in the Xfinity Series in 2018, at Road America. But he has made two NASCAR Cup Series starts this season for The Money Team Racing, in the Daytona 500 and at Circuit of the Americas.

Indiana native Daly also has made 10 NTT INDYCAR SERIES starts this season, with Ed Carpenter Racing and Meyer Shank Racing.

Daly is the second open-wheel standout to try their hand at NASCAR Xfinity Series stock car racing on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course during Brickyard Weekend. Indianapolis 500 veteran Katherine Legge will drive in the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts in the No. 07 Chevrolet fielded by SS Green Light Racing.

Four international racers also will drive in the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard for the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday, Aug. 13 at IMS – 2009 Formula One World Champion Jenson Button, sports car ace and ex-F1 driver Kamui Kobayashi and Australian V8 touring car stars Shane Van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki. Van Gisbergen stunned the NASCAR world by winning his first Cup Series start last month in the series’ first-ever street race, in downtown Chicago.

The Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts is one of four races on the IMS road course during one of the most unique weekends in global motorsports, as it’s the only event in which the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NTT INDYCAR SERIES share the same track on the same weekend.

Highlights of the schedule Saturday, Aug. 12 include the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard presented by Advance Auto Parts and the Gallagher Grand Prix for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. The Verizon 200 at the Brickyard for the NASCAR Cup Series takes center stage Sunday, Aug. 13. The future stars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES also will race in the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix on Friday, Aug. 11.

NASCAR /IndyCar Race Weekend Recap (Indianapolis Motor Speedway)

NASCAR /IndyCar Race Weekend Recap (Indianapolis Motor Speedway)

Winners: AJ Allmendinger (Cup); Austin Cindric(Xfinity); plus Will Power (IndyCar)

NASCAR Cup

Allmendinger Scores Cup victory in Wild Finish

The first NASCAR Cup Series road-course race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway was full of drama — for AJ Allmendinger, who led only the last two laps of overtime to secure his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory Sunday, and for those who fell short of the cherished trophy in an action-packed final few laps.

Denny Hamlin was leading the race on the final restart with two laps to go before being hit from behind by rookie Chase Briscoe in Turn 10, just before Briscoe was supposed to serve a penalty for running off-course earlier in the lap. Instead of winning, Hamlin finished 23rd and Briscoe, 26th.

With those two cars derailed, Allmendinger moved up from third place to take the lead and hold off Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson by .929-seconds.

“We just won at Indy, what’s up,” Allmendinger yelled toward the grandstands after screaming in excitement on his team radio during his entire victory doughnut celebration in the No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet at Indianapolis’ famed yard of bricks start/finish line.

“I mean, it was survival of the fittest,” Allmendinger said. “We probably had like an eighth, 10th-place car, sped on pit road. I thought we were going to finish 12th to 15th and then those restarts were just insane.

“It’s great when you have a car owner that just says, ‘go get me trophies.’ He doesn’t care if that thing is torn up.

NASCAR Xfinity

Austin Cindric Delivers Indianapolis Win

It was essentially a storybook ending for Austin Cindric Saturday afternoon in the Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard and the 22-year old with Hoosier roots appropriately celebrated his first win at the renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course by singing “Back Home Again in Indiana” as he took a victory lap.

Cindric easily outpaced the NASCAR Xfinity Series field by 2.108-seconds to take his series-best fifth victory of the year and 13th of his career. It marked the second win on the day for Team Penske, which won an NTT IndyCar race earlier in the day at the renowned Indianapolis facility now owned by Roger Penske himself.

“Unbelievable and first of all I’ve got to thank Roger Penske for every opportunity I’ve had in my career and every opportunity he’s given race fans to enjoy this beautiful facility,” a grinning Cindric said.

“To win at this facility is amazing,” Cindric said, adding, “What this place means to me, I can’t even put into words what this means.

“Proud to be here, proud to win for Roger and proud to win at the speedway. There’s nothing bigger.”

NTT IndyCar

Power Extends Reign as King of IMS Road with First Win of Year

Will Power finally got his first victory of the 2021 NTT IndyCar Series season on a track he has mastered like no other.

Power drove the No. 12 Verizon 5G Team Penske Chevrolet to victory in the Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix on Saturday on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, his fifth career win on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile layout that debuted in 2014.

It was the 40th career INDYCAR SERIES victory for Power, who broke a tie with four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Al Unser to climb into fifth on the all-time win list. The win also was the sixth of Power’s career at IMS, as he also won the 2018 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge. Only NASCAR star Kyle Busch,  with two Brickyard 400 wins and four Xfinity Series wins on the oval, has as many major race victories at the Racing Capital of the World.

“We needed that as a group,” Power said. “I can’t tell you how good these guys have been all year. Flawless on pit stops. They’ve given me the car, and we’ve had some bad luck. I’ve made some mistakes, as well.

“So stoked to get the Verizon 5G car in Victory Lane. Oh, what a relief, man!”

Who has read Danica Patrick’s New Book?

Who has read Danica Patrick’s New Book?

Pretty Intense: The 90-Day Mind, Body and Food Plan that will absolutely Change Your Life

Who has read Danica Patrick’s New Book?

Danica Patrick has announced that she plans to race only twice in 2018, in the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. The plan is being billed as the “Danica Double.” Then Ms. Patrick is looking to retirement as a race-car driver just two months after her thirty-sixth birthday.

In the interim, Danica has released a new book entitled “Pretty Intense.” NASCAR Race Mom hasn’t read it yet, but I want to as soon as I get a spare moment.

NRM is intrigued by the Amazon Summary:

America's NASCAR standout offers a 90-day program to sculpt your body, calm your mind, and achieve your greatest goals.

Who has read Danica Patrick’s New Book?
Everything Danica Patrick does is Pretty Intense. A top athlete in her field, not to mention a fan favorite and the first woman to rule in her male-dominated sport, Danica approaches every aspect of life with the utmost intensity. Now, she shows you how you can apply her daily principles and transform your life for the better--and have fun while doing it.

Danica's 90-day high-intensity workout, protein-rich, paleo-inspired eating plan, and mental-conditioning program will get you leaner, stronger, and healthier than you've ever been before. By mixing full-body training and stretching exercises, her accessible workouts hit the holy trinity of fitness: strength, endurance, and flexibility. Bolstered by a customized eating plan for all-day energy, her program will also help you cultivate a mindset for limitless success. You will learn to aim your sights high, confront challenges and setbacks with confidence, and cross the finish line every time. Whether your goal is a stronger core, better skills in the kitchen, or a promotion at work, Danica's Pretty Intense plan will help you reach your highest potential.

Who has read Danica Patrick’s New Book?

Now, while I am not too sure that Ms. Patrick “ruled in her male-dominated sport,” she definitely made a ripple in the NASCAR Ocean. Along the way, she became a role model to many women and girls, showing that a female can compete in a male-dominated sport.

“I’ve been doing different things and talking about different things, it’s like a fresh start with my career,” said Patrick, who will turn 36 in March. “Cooking on TV with recipes I wrote, going on TV wearing workout clothes ... it’s so different. It has been fun to do something different.”

Excerpt from Danica’s Book:

Who has read Danica Patrick’s New Book?
“It’s not easy to figure out the right way to fuel your body. As a teenager, I lived in England for three years, racing Formula cars. Back then I would go to the local bookstore, which also had a coffee shop, and I would order a large latte (which I would not order now) and sit down with a stack of health and fitness books. I have always been interested in the human body and how it works, and I spent hours flipping through the pages learning new ways to take care of myself. It was the beginning of my experimentation with diets: I think the first phase was low-fat, then low-carb, then dairy-free, then whole grain, then a 40/30/30 balance . . . Then I turned my world upside down with a blood test. At the beginning of 2013, I took a test that scanned my blood against the ninety-six most common foods. Before I tell you my results, let me tell you generally what I used to eat so you can understand how shocked I was.”

Sounds both interesting and easy to read. I think I will purchase it to read on my trip to Texas this March.

If you read the book,
let me know your opinion
– is it worth a read?

Sonoma Raceway - #SonomaStrong

Sonoma Raceway has Opened its 50 Acres Campground to Northern California Fire Evacuees.

Sonoma Raceway - #SonomaStrong #NASCAR

On October 10, 2017, Sonoma Raceway offered the following statement:

Sonoma Raceway - #SonomaStrong #NASCARAll of us at Sonoma Raceway extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to those who have been touched by the devastating North Bay fires. Our facilities team and a number of local fire companies have been battling grassland fires on Cougar Mountain and elsewhere around our property, and at this point it does not appear any of the raceway's structures or other facilities are at immediate risk. We appreciate all of the good wishes that have flooded in from friends around the country.

Three days later the following was announced:

Sonoma Raceway - #SonomaStrong #NASCAR
Like many local sites that have been housing evacuees from the North Bay fires, Sonoma Raceway has been overwhelmed with generous donations from community members.

We now have more donated items than we have the capacity to use or distribute, and are no longer accepting material donations at the raceway.

In lieu of donating new or used items, we suggest you consider a financial contribution to one of these local non-profits doing incredible work in local communities:

Sonoma Raceway - #SonomaStrong #NASCAR

NASCAR Race Mom recently learned that the Sonoma Raceway also opened its 50-acre campground to evacuees seeking temporary refuge from the Northern California fires. The campground is located directly across from the raceway on Highway 121 and has not been affected by the fires.

Those in need of RV camping at Sonoma Raceway should enter the campground at Gate 6 on Highway 121, a quarter-mile north of Highway 37. The raceway will team up with United Site Services to offer basic RV services, including water/sewage service, to campers during their stay. The campground is dry with no hookups.

For more information, visit the Sonoma Raceway main office or front gate at 29355 Arnold Drive in Sonoma or call 800-870-7223 or email sonomaraceway@sonomaraceway.com.

This is just another example of how the racing family give back to the community.

Penske Race Shop Visit

Lucky kids!

CHARLOTTE, NC – Penske Racing engineer Alex Sinoyannis recently shared his racing experience on stock cars, like the new Gen 6, with a new generation of engineers from James B. Dudley High School, who will enter their concept car (pictured) in April’s Shell Eco-Marathon Americas. This initiative challenges students to develop vehicles that can travel the farthest on a gallon of fuel, and is one way Shell connects people who are interested in the energy challenges of today and tomorrow.

Lucky kids! What a creative way to interest them in both education and conservation!

Penske Racing is a racing team that competes in both the IndyCar Series and NASCAR.   The organization, a division of Penske Corporation is owned and chaired by Roger Penske.

Moses Smith Racing:
Formula Mazda-Indy Car Support Races

Race fans were treated to the Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear during the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway last weekend (August 21-22, 2010). This marked the first time the Formula Car Challenge Series was paired with the IZOD IndyCar Series in the Sonoma Valley.

The Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear is a multiple-region series with an annual national championship. The series features a multi-class format; Formula Mazda, Pro Formula Mazda, and the new FormulaSPEED2.0. All classes are powered by Mazda, and equipped with Goodyear Racing tires.

Twenty-three Standard Formula Mazda racers entered the double-header weekend. It made this one of the largest Formula Mazda races in North America this season.

On the Saturday, the first race in the standard Formula Mazda division, was won by Alan McCallum, of Houston, Texas. Alan found his way to victory lane lapping nearly a full second faster than his nearest competitor, Doug Peterson. Joe Colasacco rounded out the podium. Alan McCallum runs out of the Moses Smith Racing Shop. Unfortunately, Moses Smith, who is also the Formula Mazda class manufacturer, had to miss Alan’s historic win.

“What a great day. I had to leave the track to a ‘Support the Troops Benefit’ at a shooting range. Got to shoot a bunch of cool stuff. Mean while the MSR team was at Infineon racing...and subsequently winning the support race for Indy car! Life is good in the MSR camp!” Smith recounted.

Sunday proved to be a bit more challenging for the MSR Team. While Alan McCallum was able to place the MSR #19 on pole again, he was passed mid race. Lucas Barnett completed the pass halfway through the race and held on to the lead until turn 7 on the last lap.

McCallum barely held on as his FM got a little loose out of turn 11 headed for the checkered flag. He and Barnett crossed the finish line side by side, with Alan McCallum winning the race by a nose. Local veteran driver, Bill Weaver rounded out the podium.

McCallum is currently a student at Arizona State University, and races for Moses Smith Racing. "I came out here about a month ago and got acclimated with the track," McCallum said. "It's a relatively new car for me, but it was a lot of fun. Moses is a great guy, he helps me a lot. I learn a lot from him every day. (1)"
