The California Racing Community is saddened to report that Bailey Schweitzer, daughter of Bakersfield Speedway owner Scott Schweitzer, died in the Las Vegas shooting. Several other Bakersfield residents were injured. It is heartbreaking and gut wrenching to have tragedy strike so close to home.

NASCAR Cup Chase contender Kevin Harvick is a Bakersfield native. He returned to Bakersfield in October 2009 in his continuous support of the local Youth Racing Series. Not only did he help these local teams raise money to build and race cars, but the Daytona 500 champ even lined up in a race with the youth teams.

Schweitzer, a former high-school cheerleader, would help out at the race track in her spare time, keeping score, promoting the track on social media, shooting videos of the races and watching her cousins and brothers compete.

She also made everyone laugh.

"Every Saturday night, we could count on her to do the funny Snapchats," like selfies with wacky filters, friend Jonathan Flippen told the 'Californian'. "When I first started helping, she became a friend to me, and eventually became (like) family to me."

Schweitzer was with her mom, Crissy Schweitzer, at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.

She was most excited to hear Luke Combs play, co-worker Katelynn Cleveland told the 'Californian.' During another set, when Cleveland's favorite song came on, Schweitzer called and broadcast it to her friend.

Schweitzer's boss at Infinity Communications told the 'Californian' that his employee could find good in anything.

She posted a picture on Facebook in 2013 of a hand-written note that said in part: "Nothing in life is easy, so make the best of all of it. Don't dwell on the negatives. Optimism is key."

Schweitzer's cousin Nick Watson and his wife, Dana Watson, set up a GoFundMe fundraising page, which has collected more than $26,000 as of Thursday to cover funeral services, medical expenses, travel and transportation.

Hearts will be heavy and no doubt tears will be flowing as Bakersfield Speedway officials will be honoring Bailey Schweitzer on Friday and Saturday nights at the 32nd annual Bud Nationals. Track officials are asking all attending to wear teal as it was Bailey Schweitzer’s favorite color. Pit gates open at noon and grandstand gates open at 4 p.m. both days (Friday and Saturday)

Brody Schweitzer, Bailey’s younger brother, will be racing in the American Stock division on Friday night and will lead those drivers out on the track in his car for a moment of silence before the National Anthem.
