Chastain Spoils Playoff Show at Kansas, Posts First Cup Series Win of the Season

Chastain Spoils Playoff Show at Kansas - #NASCAR

Ross Chastain’s No 1. Trackhouse Chevrolet came to life in the second half of Sunday‘s Hollywood Casino 400 and beat William Byron‘s Chevrolet to the finish line in a hotly contested Round of 12 opener in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs.

Chastain grabbed the lead from Martin Truex Jr. moments after the final restart on Lap 248 at Kansas Speedway and held off a charging Byron by 0.388 seconds to thwart the playoff driver‘s bid for automatic advancement into the Round of 8.

Having failed to qualify for the postseason this year, Chastain reveled in his first victory of the season, his first at Kansas and the fifth of his career.

“For us on this 1 team, it’s what Cup racing is all about,” said Chastain, who led 52 laps. “It’s what (team co-owner) Justin Marks bought into Trackhouse with Pitbull, bought into NASCAR with Trackhouse to do stuff like this — to disrupt.

“Look, there’s been times this year where we couldn’t have disrupted the minnow pond outside of Darlington, let alone a Cup race. It’s hard. It’s really tough. To come and do this, there are times where I didn’t think after practicing and qualifying we had what it took. I thought we have been way stronger here in the past. It didn’t feel great all day, but our Kubota Chevy, it was better as the rubber went down, and the adjustments were great.”

Aric Almirola Plays Spoiler, Wins Xfinity Playoffs Opener

Aric Almirola Plays Spoiler - #NASCAR

Aric Almirola surged to victory in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs opener at Kansas Speedway, bypassing Cole Custer in the 197th of 200 laps and denying the circuit’s postseason hopefuls early advancement.

"For me, to be able to scratch the itch of driving race cars and competing at a high level, I absolutely love this," Almirola said. "I did not want to walk away from exactly what I did today. That adrenaline rush of what I did today is irreplaceable. You can not do that anywhere else."

Almirola’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota led 16 of the 200 laps in the Kansas Lottery 300. His second win of the season in a part-time role was his first at the 1.5-mile Kansas City track and the sixth of his Xfinity Series career.

"It's exactly what I set out to do when Coach (Gibbs) called me. I really didn't have a plan. I was retiring and didn't know what was next," Almirola said. "Coach called, I met with him, and we talked a lot about what this could look like, and it has been so gratifying. I truly believe it was an answered prayer for me, (wife) Janice and our family."

Corey Heim Completes Season Sweep at Kansas in NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Elimination Race

Corey Heim Completes Season Sweep at Kansas - #NASCAR

Corey Heim won Friday night’s Kubota Tractor 200 in the fastest truck, but he needed help from fellow Playoff driver Ty Majeski to secure the victory in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Round of 10 elimination race at Kansas Speedway.

Majeski ran out of fuel approaching the white flag while leading, allowing Heim to surge past in his No. 11 TRICON Garage Toyota and claim his sixth victory of the season in a race that saw reigning series champion Ben Rhodes and Playoff rookie Daniel Dye eliminated from title contention.

“We were the best truck all night-it’s my favorite track, I love coming here,” said Heim, who won at the 1.5-mile speedway in the spring. “I look forward to this. I had a smile on my face all week coming to this place.

“I just thought we could sweep the year here. It’s an awesome place to come. I certainly thought we had it lost there to the 98 (Majeski), almost making it on fuel, but it just shows my team made the right call.”

The victory was Heim’s second at Kansas and the 11th of his career. He led a race-high 64 laps in an event that featured 10 lead changes among three drivers.

Tanner Gray Holds on in Thrilling Finish to Win Reese’s 150 at Kansas Speedway

Tanner Gray Holds on in Thrilling Finish - #ARCA

Although the ARCA stat sheet will show Tanner Gray dominated Friday’s Reese’s 150 at Kansas Speedway, his journey to the checkered flag was anything but smooth.

Contact with Amber Balcaen on the final restart of the day left Gray with a slow leak in his left rear tire, but he still had enough car and tire to hold off Connor Zilisch, Corey Day and Andy Jankowiak in the final laps. Gray’s resolve, and his tire, lasted until the checkered flag, resulting in his second ARCA Menards Series victory of 2024.

One more lap and Gray would have been denied the victory because his left rear tire went flat just as he reached Turn 1 on the cooldown lap. He was fortunate the tire lasted to the finish so that he could celebrate putting together a complete race behind the wheel of Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 18 Toyota.

“It’s obviously gratifying when you can come here and close these things out,” Gray said. “We’ve been in a position to win most of them this year, but I haven’t done a good a very good job on the restarts at the end. It’s been a lot of fun racing with [Joe Gibbs Racing] this year and hopefully we can do this some more in the future.”

Trevor Huddleston Dominates #ARCA West at Madera Speedway

Trevor Huddleston topped the ARCA Menards Series West portion of the 51st Harvest Classic at Madera Speedway on Saturday night.

Huddleston won the West Coast Stock Car / Motorsports Hall of Fame 150 in a door-banging duel with 2023 ARCA Menards Series West champion Sean Hingorani.

Huddleston proposed to his longtime girlfriend Nastasia Dodd in victory lane as well at the speedway where they first met.

“What a race! This car…absolutely epic! Race Car Factory, High Point Racing, everybody who made this possible - I can’t thank them enough. Getting these wins isn’t easy,” Huddleston said.

Bob Moses to Perform in #NASCAR's Rowdy Road Concert Series

Kansas Speedway announced that Bob Moses (Club Set), the Vancouver-bred duo consisting of Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance, will be performing in the Highline District on Sunday, Sept. 29, as part of NASCAR‘s Rowdy Road concert series. The concert will prelude the NASCAR Cup Series‘ return to the most exciting track on the schedule in the Hollywood Casino 400 presented by ESPN BET at 2 p.m.

“We‘re dedicated to continually leveling up the hype around our events, and having Bob Moses perform in the Highline District certainly accomplishes that,” said Kansas Speedway President Pat Warren. “With the pairing of electrifying music and racing, you won‘t find a better fan experience anywhere else than at Kansas Speedway.”

The electronic duo came to life in the Brooklyn underground scene in 2012. Early single releases on taste-making electronic label Scissor & Thread led to signing with Domino and the late 2015 release of their debut album Days Gone By.

Meshing guitar licks, a moody smolder and a dash of dance-floor ambience with lyrical depth and classic songwriting, the duo created a sound that appeals equally to club goers and rock music fans. Translating their sound seamlessly to the live performance realm, years of nonstop global touring – including appearances at every major festival from Glastonbury and Coachella to Lollapalooza and beyond – cemented the duo‘s live reputation and repeated recognition as Resident Advisor‘s Best Live Act. A standout performance on The Ellen Show, a pair of nominations at both the Junos and the Grammys (and a Grammy win), and a top 15 US Alternative radio hit with “Tearing Me Up,” have further sealed the band‘s burgeoning mainstream success.

Their 2018 album Battle Lines was met with immense praise upon release. The duo found themselves expanding their sonic palette, embracing their most inventive instincts and infusing their lyrics with a more outward-looking perspective, leading to it being named one of Billboard‘s “Best Electronic Albums of 2018.”

In 2020 with the world in quarantine, Bob Moses doubled down by releasing Desire, the continuously mixed “concept album for the club” featuring the hit title-track collaboration with ZHU and their own epic concert film Falling into Focus and its accompanying live album. In 2022 they released their third full-length album The Silence in Between powered by the pulsing lead single “Love Brand New” which topped the Alternative radio charts for weeks in both the US and Canada.

Bristol tradition: Driver / Crew Kids sing the National Anthem

Every year the kids of Motor Racing Outreach sing the national anthem.

For all of the traditions in NASCAR, one of the more endearing for fans and competitors took place last night.

It’s when the children of drivers and team members sing the national anthem at Bristol Motor Speedway. They’ve performed the song for this race every since 1999 and among those who have sung in the children’s choir are current drivers Chase Elliott, Harrison Burton, Jeb Burton, Todd Gilliland and John Hunter Nemechek.

Kyle Larson Shines Bright under the Lights with Bristol Win

Kyle Larson Shines Bright under the Lights with Bristol Win #NASCAR

After leading 462 laps in the Bass Pro Shops Night Race, Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson  showed the No. 5 team’s full potential with a dominant win in the 500-lapper at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Larson scored his fifth win of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season and advanced to the next round of the Cup Series Playoffs.

Chase Elliott, Bubba Wallace, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell rounded out the top five.

“I’ve had a lot of good cars since I’ve come to Hendrick Motorsports, but man, that was just great execution all weekend by the team,” Larson said. “We dominate a lot of races but we might not close them all out, so it feels really good to close one out here.”

“That’s pretty awesome because there’s been some legendary Hall of Famers race for Hendrick Motorsports, and we’ve all grown up watching Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson dominate,” Larson said. “So pretty cool to get my name on another record at Hendrick Motorsports.” (Larson’s 462 of 500 laps lead is the most ever by a Hendrick driver)

Cole Custer Wins at Bristol, claims Xfinity Series Regular Season Championship

Cole Custer recovered from an early brush with the outside wall to win Friday‘s Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway, the race that set the field for the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs.

Custer‘s second victory of the season, combined with a litany of trouble that befell Justin Allgaier, gave the driver of the No. 00 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford an unlikely come-from-behind victory in the battle for the regular-season title and an accompanying 15 playoff-point bonus.

“This is huge, because our confidence was going down there the last month,” said Custer, the reigning series champion who will begin his title defense at Kansas Speedway. “To get this win really means a lot…

“It‘s unbelievable. These guys never give up. It‘s been a tough month, but to be able to lead into the playoffs like this, we‘re going to really bring it to them.”

Layne Riggs goes back-to-back with Bristol Truck Series win

Layne Riggs relished his role as spoiler so much that he returned for an encore Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Riggs isn‘t competing for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship, but that didn‘t prevent him from winning the playoff opener Aug. 25 at the Milwaukee Mile.

On Thursday, Riggs passed runner-up Corey Heim for the lead on Lap 121 of 200 in the UNOH 200 Presented by Ohio Logistics and held it the rest of the way to score his second career victory and his fourth straight top five.

“Oh, my gosh, we‘ve just learned so much with the trucks,” said the driver of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford. “My team, [crew chief] Dylan (Cappello), he‘s bad-ass…

“To be running fifth, 10th and all of a sudden to go back-to-back in the playoffs—man, I wish I was in the playoffs so bad. I think we‘d be a real threat to win the championship.”

William Sawalich Repeats at Bristol to Capture his Second ARCA Menards Series East Championship

In racing, luck is often just as important as skill. That was the case for William Sawalich on Thursday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Not only did Sawalich win the Bush’s Beans 200 for the second straight season at Bristol, but he also won his second ARCA Menards Series East championship thanks to a stroke of bad luck for title rival Connor Zilisch, who entered the East Series season finale with a 16-point lead.

“We had a really fast Starkey-Soundgear Toyota Camry today,” Sawalich said. “I had Tony Hirschman in my ear just to kind of calm me down and make me be cautious around those lap cars. That was definitely the whole race right there.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Seeks Repeat Performance

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Seeks Repeat Performance

It’s Bristol, Baby

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Seeks Repeat Performance #nascar

In last year’s fall NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was a force.

Leading 47 laps, the two-time NXS champion was flying in the high line and running away with the race before a mechanical issue caused a fire in the cockpit of his No. 88 Hellmann’s Chevrolet, ending his run short of the finish.

It’s a new year and a new opportunity, but Earnhardt Jr. is ready to go after another BMS victory.

“Last year was a blast,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. #NASCAR #ItsBristolBaby

“Last year was a blast,” Earnhardt Jr. said on the latest edition of his Dale Jr. Download program. “Yes, I have thought about what would have happened had we not had the issue with it. I’ve run that over in my head a million times, and I have a vivid image of looking down at the floorboard and seeing that fire and thinking, ‘this is over.’

“I want to go back and finish the job. We have one race, and you know how tough it is, how easy it is to show up and not be on, to miss the mark or miss the setup. We don’t know, when we unload, if it’s going to be as good as it was last year. That was a winning car. That car should have won the race. That was as good as you could ask in terms of that. The chances of getting that good a car are not very good. We feel prepared and ready. It is the same Hellmann’s car we ran last year, too.”

Coincidentally, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of one of the more dominant performances on the tricky banking of the .533-mile oval. In the fall race that year, Earnhardt Jr. swept the weekend, winning both the NXS and Cup Series events in dominating fashion. Over the two races, he led 420 of the 756 laps.

Despite that, there is a bit of a nerves factor, he said.

“I get nervous, can’t help it,” he said. “Last year when we went, I was freaking out. We were one of the two cars that could miss the race (in qualifying), but we’re locked in this year (points). I told the guys that without that pressure I’m probably going to qualify worse.

“For me, I just have to keep reminding myself that if I listen to all of them, I hear, “man, you’ve got a shot! You almost won it last year.” That’s pressure, and that makes you nervous because you want to go and deliver. You have all these people setting an expectation and you’re like, ‘Now I’ve got to go run good enough to win.’ Some of us look at that and say, ‘that’s more pressure.’ Others look at it and go, ‘that’s opportunity.'”

As for expectations, Earnhardt Jr. has a few, and they are about what you would expect from a driver of his caliber.

“When I get into the car, I have to go, ‘all right, here are my expectations. Here’s what I want to be happy,'” he said. “If I go run top-five, we run like we did last year and we get to the end of the race with a chance to win or a damn good result, I’m like, ‘hell yes!’ I will be ecstatic. I just want, when the race is over with, I want to have enjoyed what I just did.”

“I want a car that drives good, a car that I can move around and be creative with and a car that I can pass with. I want to have some fun with whoever it is that I’m racing, don’t want to get pushed around. There’s a lot of options that I want to check and some I don’t, and at the end of the night…we came here to do what we did with it and had fun doing it.”

Chris Buescher Moves Shane van Gisbergen on Final Lap, Wins in OT at Watkins Glen

A Round of 16 date at Watkins Glen International didn’t disappoint for non-playoff Chris Buescher, who bumped past Shane van Gisbergen in NASCAR Overtime to tally his first road-course victory in the Cup Series and, additionally, find Victory Lane for the first time in 2024.

Van Gisbergen, Carson Hocevar, Ross Chastain and Zane Smith rounded out the top five.

"We came here to be spoiler. We’re going to do that," said Buescher, a native of Prosper, Texas. "We would have liked to have won a couple of weeks ago (to make the playoffs), but this is huge. Such a big win for us. Everybody at RFK has worked so hard. To finally get a road-course win ‒ we’ve been so close so many times ‒ to finally pull that off is fantastic."

Connor Zilisch Dazzles in Xfinity Series Debut, Wins at Watkins Glen

In his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut, Connor Zilisch survived two wild restarts in overtime to win the Mission 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. The No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet pilot led 45 of 90 laps, holding off runner-up finisher Sheldon Creed.

AJ Allmendinger, Parker Kligerman and Chandler Smith rounded out the top five.

“I worked so hard for this one,” a smiling Zilisch said, his voice cracking with emotion. “I’ve been working for this one for months and it’s so special to me, man. I don’t even have words.

“I don’t know how I saved enough, I sputtered up the hill,” he said of having to save fuel in the closing laps which included a restart with two laps remaining and then two more in overtime.

“With two to go, I didn’t think I was going to make it back to the line even. I’m going to enjoy this one for a while. I can’t say enough about JR Motorsports and everyone who supports me.”

Connor Zilisch Dominates Field at Watkins Glen for Fifth National Win of 2024

A big weekend for Connor Zilisch at Watkins Glen International got off to a perfect start in Friday’s ARCA Series General Tire 100 at the Glen.

Setting a commanding tone in qualifying with a General Tire Pole run nearly one second faster than second-place William Sawalich, Zilisch faced no resistance as he pulled away for one of the most dominant victories of his young career by an 11-second margin. The perfect outing at Watkins Glen was Zilisch’s fifth ARCA Menards Series national triumph in six appearances.

“This Pinnacle Racing Group team worked hard, but this was one we wanted this year,” Zilisch said. “We worked really hard to bring a fast car to these road courses, and it means a lot to get redemption on our second-place finish from last year.”

With so much developing in Zilisch’s career, he considers himself fortunate to be in an environment where he can simultaneously learn and thrive. Only a handful of ARCA Menards Series starts remains before Zilisch departs PRG for a full year in the Xfinity Series, but he intends to excel at every opportunity with the program.

“It makes my job easier,” Zilisch said. “Every time I show up to the track, these guys bring me a fast car, and I can count on them. It’s been a lot of fun this year, and I’m super proud of everyone that is a part of this team. It’s truly a blessing to be here, and I’m looking forward to the future.”

"Watkins Glen is a great track for us. I always know what I need out of the car. WGI is a different style of road course where we carry a lot of speed. I’ve always felt that no matter the road course that I can be up front. Now we have cars that are allowing us to do that. It’s been a lot of fun this season. It’s now time to finish the job and get a win." Michael McDowell

This weekend Benebone will return to the No. 34 Ford Mustang Dark Horse. Benebone is a leading brand of USA-made durable chew toys for dogs. The company's simple mission is to make lives better for dogs and the people who love them. Benebone's core values center around awesome products, building and serving communities, and a good dose of fun.

"We are very confident in our road course setups, and we only have one job now, to be a playoff spoiler. The new tire and track changes at The Glen should make for an exciting practice. We will adapt to those changes and plan to be at the front with a chance to win!" Travis Peterson – Crew Chief

Todd Gilliland Debuts Boozy Jerky to NASCAR World

The NASCAR Cup Series makes their annual trip to Watkins Glen, New York and Watkins Glen International this Sunday. This will not only be the 100th race for the “Next Gen” car, but Todd Gilliland’s 100th Cup Series start.

“I’m excited for The Glen—it’s such a fun track to race on. We don’t visit many road courses, so it’s a refreshing change of pace. This weekend is significant for me, FRM, and Boozy Jerky, as it’s my 100th Cup Series start and Boozy Jerky’s debut. There’s already a lot to celebrate, & I hope we can cap it off with a win. I’m excited to have Boozy Jerky on board this weekend. Looking forward to introducing them to the NASCAR World. We have our hauler stocked up already and the entire team is excited to try it. It’ll be a good weekend.”  Todd Gilliland

Boozy Jerky will make their first NASCAR start this weekend, partnering with Gilliland and the No. 38 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for the 90-lap event. Boozy Jerky is the original booze-infused brand of beef jerky. Every bite of Boozy Jerky is meticulously hand-crafted in the US to be tender, moist, and full of rich and defining flavors.

“Watkins Glen has been a good track for us. We left there with a solid 11th-place finish last year, but I think we can do better than that. We’re building fast Ford Mustang Dark Horses; we just need to execute at the track. The plan is simple: qualify up front and stay there. That’s easier said than done. but I think we can do that this weekend.” Ryan Bergenty Crew Chief

Track activity for the NASCAR Cup Series will start Saturday, September 14th with practice and qualifying at 11:30 am ET. Go Bowling at The Glen will be Sunday, September 15th at 3:00 pm ET.

Fans can watch the action live on the USA Network or listen via the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM channel 90.
