Chris Buescher Moves Shane van Gisbergen on Final Lap, Wins in OT at Watkins Glen

Chris Buescher Moves Shane van Gisbergen on Final Lap, Wins in OT at Watkins Glen

A Round of 16 date at Watkins Glen International didn’t disappoint for non-playoff Chris Buescher, who bumped past Shane van Gisbergen in NASCAR Overtime to tally his first road-course victory in the Cup Series and, additionally, find Victory Lane for the first time in 2024.

Van Gisbergen, Carson Hocevar, Ross Chastain and Zane Smith rounded out the top five.

"We came here to be spoiler. We’re going to do that," said Buescher, a native of Prosper, Texas. "We would have liked to have won a couple of weeks ago (to make the playoffs), but this is huge. Such a big win for us. Everybody at RFK has worked so hard. To finally get a road-course win ‒ we’ve been so close so many times ‒ to finally pull that off is fantastic."

NASCAR Xfinity

Connor Zilisch Dazzles in Xfinity Series Debut, Wins at Watkins Glen

In his NASCAR Xfinity Series debut, Connor Zilisch survived two wild restarts in overtime to win the Mission 200 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International. The No. 88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet pilot led 45 of 90 laps, holding off runner-up finisher Sheldon Creed.

AJ Allmendinger, Parker Kligerman and Chandler Smith rounded out the top five.

“I worked so hard for this one,” a smiling Zilisch said, his voice cracking with emotion. “I’ve been working for this one for months and it’s so special to me, man. I don’t even have words.

“I don’t know how I saved enough, I sputtered up the hill,” he said of having to save fuel in the closing laps which included a restart with two laps remaining and then two more in overtime.

“With two to go, I didn’t think I was going to make it back to the line even. I’m going to enjoy this one for a while. I can’t say enough about JR Motorsports and everyone who supports me.”

ARCA

Connor Zilisch Dominates Field at Watkins Glen for Fifth National Win of 2024

A big weekend for Connor Zilisch at Watkins Glen International got off to a perfect start in Friday’s ARCA Series General Tire 100 at the Glen.

Setting a commanding tone in qualifying with a General Tire Pole run nearly one second faster than second-place William Sawalich, Zilisch faced no resistance as he pulled away for one of the most dominant victories of his young career by an 11-second margin. The perfect outing at Watkins Glen was Zilisch’s fifth ARCA Menards Series national triumph in six appearances.

“This Pinnacle Racing Group team worked hard, but this was one we wanted this year,” Zilisch said. “We worked really hard to bring a fast car to these road courses, and it means a lot to get redemption on our second-place finish from last year.”

With so much developing in Zilisch’s career, he considers himself fortunate to be in an environment where he can simultaneously learn and thrive. Only a handful of ARCA Menards Series starts remains before Zilisch departs PRG for a full year in the Xfinity Series, but he intends to excel at every opportunity with the program.

“It makes my job easier,” Zilisch said. “Every time I show up to the track, these guys bring me a fast car, and I can count on them. It’s been a lot of fun this year, and I’m super proud of everyone that is a part of this team. It’s truly a blessing to be here, and I’m looking forward to the future.”

Michael McDowell and Benebone Head to The Glen

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York and Watkins Glen International for road course racing this weekend.

#34 Michael McDowell #NASCAR

Michael McDowell #NASCAR
"Watkins Glen is a great track for us. I always know what I need out of the car. WGI is a different style of road course where we carry a lot of speed. I’ve always felt that no matter the road course that I can be up front. Now we have cars that are allowing us to do that. It’s been a lot of fun this season. It’s now time to finish the job and get a win." Michael McDowell

This weekend Benebone will return to the No. 34 Ford Mustang Dark Horse. Benebone is a leading brand of USA-made durable chew toys for dogs. The company's simple mission is to make lives better for dogs and the people who love them. Benebone's core values center around awesome products, building and serving communities, and a good dose of fun.

"We are very confident in our road course setups, and we only have one job now, to be a playoff spoiler. The new tire and track changes at The Glen should make for an exciting practice. We will adapt to those changes and plan to be at the front with a chance to win!" Travis Peterson – Crew Chief

Todd Gilliland Debuts Boozy Jerky to NASCAR World

The NASCAR Cup Series makes their annual trip to Watkins Glen, New York and Watkins Glen International this Sunday. This will not only be the 100th race for the “Next Gen” car, but Todd Gilliland’s 100th Cup Series start.

#38 Todd Gilliland #NASCAR

Todd Gilliland #NASCAR
“I’m excited for The Glen—it’s such a fun track to race on. We don’t visit many road courses, so it’s a refreshing change of pace. This weekend is significant for me, FRM, and Boozy Jerky, as it’s my 100th Cup Series start and Boozy Jerky’s debut. There’s already a lot to celebrate, & I hope we can cap it off with a win. I’m excited to have Boozy Jerky on board this weekend. Looking forward to introducing them to the NASCAR World. We have our hauler stocked up already and the entire team is excited to try it. It’ll be a good weekend.”  Todd Gilliland

Boozy Jerky will make their first NASCAR start this weekend, partnering with Gilliland and the No. 38 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for the 90-lap event. Boozy Jerky is the original booze-infused brand of beef jerky. Every bite of Boozy Jerky is meticulously hand-crafted in the US to be tender, moist, and full of rich and defining flavors.

“Watkins Glen has been a good track for us. We left there with a solid 11th-place finish last year, but I think we can do better than that. We’re building fast Ford Mustang Dark Horses; we just need to execute at the track. The plan is simple: qualify up front and stay there. That’s easier said than done. but I think we can do that this weekend.” Ryan Bergenty Crew Chief

Track activity for the NASCAR Cup Series will start Saturday, September 14th with practice and qualifying at 11:30 am ET. Go Bowling at The Glen will be Sunday, September 15th at 3:00 pm ET.

Fans can watch the action live on the USA Network or listen via the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM channel 90.

Juan Pablo Montoya Returns to #NASCAR

23XI Racing, in collaboration with the Mobil 1 brand, announced that Juan Pablo Montoya, a decorated and championship-winning driver in multiple series, will compete in the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota Camry XSE in the NASCAR Cup Series event at Watkins Glen International on September 15. The race will serve as the third and final event for the No. 50 Camry, which has competed at two previous races as part of a larger global celebration for the Mobil 1 brand to commemorate its 50th anniversary, and as a third entry for 23XI.

The 50th-anniversary commemoration began at Circuit of the Americas in March with Japanese racing star Kamui Kobayashi behind the wheel, followed by rising NASCAR star Corey Heim at Nashville Super speedway in June. For the final race of the celebration, it’s only fitting to close out with another elite international racing legend. Montoya, a NASCAR regular from 2007to 2013, will make his first NASCAR Cup Series start since the 2014 Brickyard400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In addition to NASCAR racing, theColombian-born driver has competed full-time in Formula One, CART, IndyCar, and IMSA. He has won championships in CART (1999) and IMSA (2019) and is a two-timeIndy 500 winner and three-time winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Montoya has 12 overall starts at Watkins Glen in four different series. He has one win(2010), a pole award, three top-five, and five top-10 finishes in his seven starts there in the Cup Series.

“I’m looking forward to getting back in a Cup car and racing at Watkins Glen - a track I really enjoy and had the chance to experience earlier in my career,” shared Montoya. “It’s an honor to celebrate the Mobil 1 team’s remarkable legacy in racing and be recognized for my contributions to motorsports. The Mobil 1 brand was one of my first sponsors when I started racing, so to represent the brand again as they celebrate this milestone will be so special. I’m also excited to work with 23XI and experience what the team is building.”

“Being able to have such an iconic driver like Juan Pablo Montoya to race the No. 50 car is the perfect way to complete the run of our gold paint scheme with 23XI Racing,” explained Katy Howell, Director of Global Sponsorships and Marketing Services, on behalf of the Mobil 1 team. “We worked with Juan Pablo at the beginning of his career, so to partner with a legendary driver such as himself as he returns to NASCAR is truly a dream come true. It has been an exciting year for our brand globally as we celebrate a historic milestone, and we are thrilled to have an all-star line-up for the third entry of the No. 50 Camry. Each of the drivers and teams showcase our true passion for racing that we celebrate in everything we do as a brand. It has been a privilege to continue to showcase how our products can help race teams and consumers get the most out of their engines.”

”Juan Pablo Montoya is a world-class driver who has won in everything he’s driven, and he will be a great closer to the 50th-anniversary celebration we’ve had in NASCAR with the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota,” said Steve Lauletta, President of 23XI Racing. “The events have highlighted racing legends as well as what’s next in motorsports, and 23XI has been honored to have been apart of adding to the Mobil 1 legacy and celebrating such a momentous occasion.”

As the Mobil 1 team continues to elevate the sport of racing and create unique experiences for drivers and fans, the brand has unveiled special paint schemes, liveries, and decals to honor its 50-year legacy in a variety of motorsports series around the world including IMSA, Formula One, INDYCAR, NHRA, Moto GP and many more.

With the upcoming Watkins Glen International event concluding the three-race run for the No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota Camry XSE and NASCAR Cup Series celebrations for the Mobil 1 brand, fans can tune in to cheer on Montoya as he makes his incredible return to the sport and as races towards another win.

William Byron Wins Cup Series Race at Watkins Glen

William Byron Wins Cup Series Race at Watkins Glen

William Byron added to his season highlight reel, earning his first career NASCAR Cup Series road-course victory with a dominant win in Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen at historic Watkins Glen International.

It marks a career-best fifth victory of the season, tops in the NASCAR Cup Series and the most for him in a single season in a six-year career in NASCAR’s top series. And the 25-year-old Charlotte native had to earn this one — holding off another championship challenger, Denny Hamlin, by a healthy 2.632 seconds for the win. Byron led 66 of the 90 laps — extending his advantage over the field each lap of the final 10-lap run to the checkered flag.

“Yeah, I would have to think about that a little bit, though,” Byron said when asked if he felt like it was his most dominant race win. “But it definitely feels really good, just a huge credit to the race team behind me. I want to thank Max Papis. My first road-course win, and we worked years and years for this.

“Thanks to all the guys on the team. I did a lot of laps on iRacing this week, got a new simulator at home. It’s a great win. It shows when we’re at our best, we can perform like this.”

Sam Mayer outlasts field in OT, wins at Watkins Glen

Sam Mayer outlasts field in OT, wins at Watkins Gle

JR Motorsports driver Sam Mayer survived a full-contact afternoon at Watkins Glen International — contributing his own bump and run on the final restart to take the lead in overtime and hold off the field for his second career NASCAR Xfinity Series win Saturday in the Shriners Children‘s 200 at The Glen.

Mayer‘s No. 1 JRM Chevrolet tagged the back of the day‘s most dominant driver and then-race leader Ty Gibbs, spinning Gibbs‘ No. 19 Toyota, which then collected a handful of other lead pack cars. The 21-year-old Wisconsin native pulled away from the mayhem behind and raced off to a .909-second victory over Richard Childress Racing‘s Sheldon Creed.

“On that first one, I got used up, thought I had a good one there‘‘ Mayer said of the two overtime restarts. “All glory to God for this one because we had to work our tails off for it.

“I wheel-hopped it, that‘s unfortunate, and I feel bad for doing that. Obviously, you don‘t want to take out any car like that,‘‘ Mayer added. “Just trying to get another win in the Xfinity Series. I‘ve got a lot of catching up to do. I was in there, I put my nose in there, and that‘s part of it.

“That‘s an accident, but I think everyone can agree it‘s okay for an Xfinity Series regular to win this race.”

The ARCA Series ‘General Tire 100 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International’

Jesse Love - The ARCA Series ‘General Tire 100 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International’

Jesse Love’s eighth victory in the 2023 ARCA Menards Series season was simultaneously his most unpredictable.

Love only had one lap to pass race leader Connor Zilisch as a light rain began to fall around Watkins Glen International with five laps remaining. As the two reached the final turn, Love nudged Zilisch out of the groove to narrowly steal the win in Friday’s General Tire 100 at the Glen.

“Hats off to Connor Zilisch,” Love said. “I hope he doesn’t think [the bump] was dirty. It was borderline, but I had to do something. He left the door open for me to do something when he got into the rumble strips.

“Brent Crews and Connor Zilisch are two of the best up-and-coming race car drivers in the country right now and they put that on full display today.”

With his victory, Love continues to make ARCA Menards Series history by becoming the 13th driver to win four races in a row. Should he win the next two races, Love will break the all-time record that currently stands at five consecutive victories between Tim Steele, Bruce Gould, Jack Bowsher and Harold Smith.

Sean Hingorani Dominates at Evergreen, Earns 4th West Series Win of 2023

Sean Hingorani Dominates at Evergreen, Earns 4th West Series Win of 2023

Despite entering the NAPA Auto Parts ARCA 150 at Washington’s Evergreen Speedway second in ARCA Menards Series West points behind rival Landen Lewis, Sean Hingorani had maintained confidence that he’s the favorite for the 2023 championship.

On Saturday night, the Venturini Motorsports driver proved why.

Hingorani at Evergreen picked up his fourth West Series win of the season, and he did so in dominating fashion. The 16-year-old from Newport Beach, California spent the first third of the 150-lap race on the 5/8-mile oval riding the back bumper of pole-sitter Tyler Reif before he made the pass for the lead on Lap 56.

Hingorani never looked back.

Brent Crews Ends Jesse Love’s Four-Race Win Streak, Earns First Victory at Springfield

A bump-and-run on Love shortly after the final restart of the day was all Crews needed to pull away from the field during the Dutch Boy 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and win in just his second ARCA Menards Series start.

Crews is no stranger to finding Victory Lane on a dirt track but took great pride in earning his first series victory at a historic facility like the Springfield Mile.

“This is the highest-caliber stuff I’ve ever done,” Crews said. “Being able to win [at Springfield] means a lot, but I want to give all glory to God. None of this would be possible without him, [my crew chief] Monon [Rahman] and everyone at Venturini Motorsports that puts their hands on this thing to make it fast.”

Davenport Proves Super Again, Winning Camping World SRX Thursday Night Thunder Finale at Lucas Oil Speedway In Front Of Big Crowd.

One of the biggest motorsports events in Ozarks-area racing history came to Lucas Oil Speedway on Thursday night and it did not disappoint - with a familiar face taking a trip to victory lane.

Jonathan Davenport, putting on a display worthy of his nickname of "Superman," led all 90 laps to capture the Camping World SRX Thursday Night Thunder season finale in front of an estimated 8,000 roaring fans and countless others watching on ESPN.

Davenport, one of the world premier Dirt Late Model drivers, won for the fifth time at Lucas Oil Speedway in 2023 adding to four Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series/Lucas Oil MLRA wins. The Blairsville, Georgia, native emerged from a thrilling battle with Clint Bowyer after a restart with 10 laps remaining that had the big crowd on its feet.

Brad Keselowski rallied to finish second with Ken Schrader third and Ryan Newman, the 2023 Camping World SRX champion, taking fourth.

"I'm speechless. This is awesome," said Davenport, a five-time World 100 winner and three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion. "I was just out there pacing myself, trying to keep the edges on the tires and do dirt-guys stuff.

"Man, this is an awesome experience. Thanks so much to SRX for giving me this opportunity and a chance to come out here and race with some of my heroes, legends and superstars. I'm just an ol' country boy from Georgia that runs dirt cars."

Ryan Newman clinched the series championship before the feature race went green. He entered the night with a 39-point lead and finished 45 in front of the defending champ Andretti and Keselowski who tied for second.

"It means a lot," Newman said of the championship. "Any kind of championship in any series and the Superstar Racing Experience, what can you say? Guys like TOny Stewart. Jonathan Davenport, who's won everything on dirt. Racing against Kenny Schrader, Kenny Wallace, it's just a whole lot of fun. Castroneves, an Indy Car champion and four-time winner. It's very special."

With great anticipation the NASCAR Cup Series returns to New York’s Watkins Glen International for the 23rd race of the 2021 season, the Go Bowling at The Glen, today, August 8 at 3 p.m. ET on NBCSNMRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.  Not only has the NASCAR Cup Series been on a two-week Summer hiatus while the Olympics were held, but the series also hasn’t been to Watkins Glen International since 2019 due to restrictions and schedule changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Watkins Glen International is one of four tracks left in the regular season to decide who makes it to the Playoffs in 2021. This weekend will be the 38th running of a NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen. The 2.45-mile road course located near Watkins Glen, NY is a multi-elevational course that provides great highspeed racing.

NASCAR Returns to Watkins Glen International

Clinch Scenarios: Four Races Left Till the Playoffs

Time is ticking for the NASCAR Cup Series competitors that have not clinched their spot in the 2021 Playoffs. Just four races remain in the regular season, including this weekend’s Go Bowling at The Glen (Aug. 8 at 3 p.m. ET on NBCSN, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at Watkins Glen International located just outside Watkins Glen, New York. Nine drivers have secured their fate into the postseason leaving seven spots still mathematically available heading into Sunday’s extravaganza.

Already Clinched

The following nine drivers have clinched a spot in the 16-driver postseason field: Kyle Larson, William Byron, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr.Ryan Blaney, Brad Keselowski and Alex Bowman.

Can Clinch Via Previous Wins

The following drivers could clinch if they build up enough points to ensure they will not be left out of the Playoffs due to not all winning drivers having a slot available:

If there is a repeat winner: Kurt Busch would clinch with 46 points and Christopher Bell could only clinch with help.

If there is a new winner: Both Kurt Busch and Christopher Bell could only clinch with help.

Can Clinch Via Win

The following drivers would clinch on their win alone: Kurt Busch, Christopher Bell, Michael McDowell, Aric Almirola, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Tyler Reddick and Austin Dillon.

Derek Kraus #19 #NASCAR Watkins Glen Camping World Truck Series

“We're going to eat the big apple!”

This Saturday the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers meet in New York State. The legendary Watkins Glen Road Circuit will be the setting for the 15th and final race of the regular season. The last chance for many drivers to qualify for the Playoffs, including Derek Kraus

Currently 12th in the championship, he can mathematically still integrate the top10 synonymous with direct qualification to play the title. But on the sole condition of making a full box. Win the race and the first two stages. Because with 53 points behind Stewart Friesen he has no other choice. Or hope that Friesen and Chandler Smith (who is 40 points ahead of Derek) finish low in the standings and score the minimum number of points. Derek has already managed to score 52 points in Knoxville, his career personal best. As a reminder in NCWTS the maximum possible points in a race is 60. The "easiest" and safe for Derek is to win the race because it is the assurance of getting his entry ticket for the Playoffs regardless what his closest opponents in the driver standings will do in the race.

Watkins Glen has been on the NASCAR racing calendar since 1957. This hilly track has already seen all of the world's greatest disciplines in motorsports perform on its asphalt between its legendary light blue safety rails. F1, Indycar, IMSA, even the motorbikes of WSBK, and pretty much every series from NASCAR.

Derek knows the track having raced there in 2019 in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Starting from the back of the peloton following unapproved adjustments, he was able to climb back into the top10 in 9th position. Unfortunately, the race was cut short due to the rain and lightnings.

But this experience will benefit him. Indeed, there will be neither practice nor qualifying session here. Directly the race.

#UnitedRentals176

Thanks to his last good results at Knoxville, he will start the race in 7th position. There will be 72 laps to go. The first two stages each counting 20 laps. It's a fairly short race in duration because the track is very fast. Last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic the race was canceled but if we look at the stats of the last race in 2019, the pole in the Cup Series was above 127 mph and over 124 mph in Xfinity Series. And since the NCWTS trucks are known to perform similarly to the NXS cars on the road tracks, this gives an idea of the speeds achieved on the long straight lines of the Glen. The first corner is the slowest on the circuit. The fan favorite place, the famous Esses or the Bus Stop chicane being are very fast portions.

Rumors have it that this will be the last time NASCAR uses the short version of Watkins Glen. The long version used in Indy or IMSA should be used from 2022. A wish of fans and especially drivers for more than ten years.

This weekend the #19 Toyota Tundra from McAnally-Hilgemann Racing will wear the Hunter Nation  blue and white colors for the 5th time this season. There will be 40 trucks at the start. The peculiarity of the pitlane is that it is the other way around... So the refueling is on the right and not on the left and it is on the driver's side that the tires are changed first in a 4-tire pit stop. But nothing was left to chance as MHR posted a video on their Twitter account of the pit crew training!

Note that on such a hilly road circuit and with the trees obstructing the spotter's vision, it is not one but two spotters that Derek will have the chance to hear through his helmet. After the interim in Knoxville assured by Jeff Gotelaer, it is the return of the usual Freddie Kraft who will be joined here by Anthony Warren. At 42, this former Late Models driver residing in Norfolk, Virginia, is an experienced spotter having worked with Kyle Larson, for example, for years. Since his K&N East period with REV Racing to Hendrick Motorsports in the Cup Series this year on the road crew and as an additional spotter. But he's also used to the NCWTS as he was Todd Gilliland's spotter in Knoxville.

No VD logo on Derek's truck this time around. Hopefully the 2 grams less will allow the #19 to be the fastest on the track!
