NASCAR competitors ready for Roseburg race

ROSEBURG, Ore. - NASCAR comes to Roseburg Saturday night June 5th, and drivers and promoters were at the track Friday. Preparing for the event. They were doing some test laps, checking out their cars to make sure they are operating properly, and to just get familiar with the one-third mile Douglas County Speedway track.

Chris Walker with NASCAR Marketing said most of the major tracks are on the east coast, so races like the one in Roseburg are vital to the sport.

"NASCAR wants to be on the west coast. It is a very important market for them to have a NASCAR presence in the state of Oregon. It's not only huge for NASCAR, but the citizens and residents of the state of Oregon," said Walker.

Battery Change Slowed Moses Smith’s Efforts

Moses Smith headed to Iowa Speedway for the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa “200” excited about the combined NASCAR K&N Pro Series East/West Series event. The No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/White Flyer Toyota team focused on 200-laps of great racing at the 7/8-mile track in Newton, Iowa. Smith qualified the car 29th of the 49 entries.Smith avoided the early race on-track mayhem as a car spun in turn four collecting another competitor at lap 14. Falling back to 35th just three laps later, Smith and Crew Chief Mario Isola made the decision to come to pit road to make adjustments to the car and took the opportunity to take on fuel.

When the green flag dropped, Smith had a great restart and avoided the brunt of a second crash at lap 22. Unfortunately, he sustained right rear quarter panel damage which resulted in a flat tire. The No. 16 Spotter and 2007 Champion Mike David confirmed the extent of the damage and directed Smith to the pits at lap 28 for the repairs.

Even with the No. 16 teams scrambling to get a track safety tow truck moved which was blocking Smith’s pit stall, he was able to advance from 33rd to 28th after the repairs were made. Once again under caution, Smith followed the leaders into the pits, this time opting for left side tires followed by fuel. At lap 89, Smith began to report that he was having power issues with the car. The battery was dead and the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products Toyota Camry was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop, putting Smith ten laps down from the leaders. With fresh right side tires Smith reentered the race in 38th turning his fastest lap time of the night. Smith continued to battle and was able to bring home the No. 16 Hasa Toyota in 34th.

The Goodyear Dealers of Iowa “200” can be seen on Thursday May 27th on SPEED Channel 3 pm PST.

Team Excited About Iowa

Moses Smith, piloting the No. 16 Hasa Pool Product/White Flyer Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing, finished in fourteenth overall at Iowa Speedway the last time the East and West Series met in Iowa. The Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 is the only NASCAR K&N Pro Series combined race for the East and the West Series. Each series is scored separately at this combined event posting Smith in eighth for the West Series in 2009. Moses currently is in eleventh in the point standings and only 2 points out of the top ten in the chase for the 2010 West Series championship.

“I’m looking forward to Iowa,” said Smith. “I really like running the bigger tracks. I know the Hasa team is excited because we get to run a Hasa Toyota Camry that they really have been working hard to prepare.”

Moses Smith will be participating in a Bowling Challenge on Friday May 21st at the Bass Pro Shop in Altoona, Iowa beginning at 6:30 pm. It should be a great event. If you’re in the area, please come by and meet the two-time Most Popular driver in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

NASCAR’s 2009 Most Popular Drivers

How is their 2010 season progressing?

NASCAR’s Regional Touring Series Most Popular DriversAndy Seuss, Ted Christopher, Andrew Ranger, Moses Smith, Steve Park

In July of 2009, fans were able to visit www.nascar.com and cast online votes for the “2009 Most Popular Driver of the Year Award” for each of NASCAR’s regional touring series; the NASCAR K&N Pro World Series East and West, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, NASCAR Mexico Series and NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

New in the 2009 vote, was the ability of the fans to “write in” their favorite driver if he or she were not among the nominees for a specific series. Race fans were encouraged to vote once per day.

The results were announced at each of the respective series’ season-end banquets. The winners were: NASCAR K&N Pro World Series East - Steve Park; NASCAR K&N Pro World Series West - Moses Smith; NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour - Ted Christopher; NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour - Andy Seuss; NASCAR Mexico Series - Jorge Arteaga; NASCAR Canadian Tire Series – Andrew Ranger

How is the 2010 season progressing for the 2009 NASCAR Most Popular Drivers:

NASCAR K&N Pro World Series East:

On January 2, 2010, Steve Park, and his wife Jessica announced the birth of their son Jayden Robert Park. After starting from the twenty-third position, Steve finished tenth in the NASCAR All-Star Showdown K&N Pro Series Race on January 30th at the Toyota Speedway in Irwindale, California.
Unfortunately, in March, Parks relayed that his team would not be running the series for the Championship due to finances. However, NDS Motorsports has expressed tentatively plans to have Steve Park, who drove the #35 race car for the team the two previous seasons, in select races in the #53 Chevrolet.

NASCAR K&N Pro World Series West:

Moses Smith’s 2010 season has had one common theme. When asked how his season was going, Moses explained, “2010 has been a tough start…we have had three races (two plus the showdown) and we have wrecked three cars. Now the good thing is that we should have all our bad luck out of the way for the year. The team is awesome. We have a bunch of new guys on the team who bring a ton of experience. We are really gelling. So ask me this same question after our next race in Iowa…"

Despite the bad luck, Moses managed an eight place finish at All American Speedway and finished sixteenth at the Phoenix International Raceway. He is currently eleventh in the Championship Chase.

What does winning the NASCAR “Most Popular Driver” Award mean to Moses? “First, it means a lot to me, and everyone at MSR. We take a lot of pride in racing. We don’t just race on the weekends; this is what we do every day. We build Race cars, we run a series, we take drivers to the track, and we race. A big part of our success is involving the community, the public, and most of all the fans. So the MPD award just shows all of us at MSR that everyone appreciates what we do. So even though you are voting for “Moses Smith” on the ballet, I wouldn’t be where I am if not for the whole crew at MSR, and the sponsors such as Hasa Pool Product, White Flyer, Blimpie…etc…So really you are voting for all of us.”

Whelen Modified Tour:

Christopher captured his first NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship in 2008 and finished third last year. His next race is schedule for May 28, 2010 at the Stafford Motor Speedway.

With two races in the 2010 books, Ted Christopher can boast of one win {Stafford (5/1/10)} and a fourth place finish. Christopher is currently second in the point standings; a mere fifteen points out of first. These accomplishments helped Ted ranked sixth in the March Hunter Index.

Whelen Southern Modified Tour:

Andy Seuss’ series has run three of their ten-race 2010 schedule. With his win at the Caraway Speedway, Seuss is second in the point’s fight and right in the middle of the championship battle. He finished second in points in 2009 with four wins and 10 top-five finishes in 14 races.

Mexico Series:

In 2009, Jorge Arteaga was voted the most popular driver in the NASCAR Mexico Series after he received thirty-four percent of the votes; a majority by twenty-three percent.

For 2010, Arteaga finished ninth at Nuevo Autódromo de Aguascalientes; twenty-ninth at Nuevo Autódromo de Querétaro and tenth at Autódromo Potosino. Jorge is being filmed for a reality TV series entitled NASCAR Mexico 24/7 which follows the behind-the-scenes happenings of NASCAR from the perspective of the FCV Racing Team. It's currently being broadcast on Speed TV in Latin America during race weeks.

The NASCAR Mexico Series will return to the track Saturday, May 22 at Autodromo Chiapas in Tuxtla Gutierrez. The race will mark the series' first Saturday night event.

Canadian Tire Series:

The Canadian Tire Series first 2010 race is scheduled for June 5th. However, an announcement made last month informed that Andrew Ranger, a two-time champion of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1, had signed on to compete in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East for NDS Motorsports.

The 23-year-old driver from Roxton Pond, Quebec, will take over the seat of the No. 35 Waste Management Chevrolet for the remainder of the 2010 season. Ranger’s first race in the car will be in the East/West Challenge at Iowa Speedway on May 23. Andrew has also expressed an interest in the possibility of running select NASCAR Canadian Tire Series events this season.

A Talented Field Of Stars

News & Notes: East-West ‘Challenge’ Brings A Talented Field Of Stars To The Heartland

East-West ‘Challenge’ Brings A Talented Field Of Stars To The Heartland
Some of the nation’s top young talent have emerged this season as rising stars this season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, which serves as NASCAR’s top developmental series. These newcomers, coupled with veterans of the series, will head to Newton, Iowa this week for the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 on Sunday, May 23.

Goodyear 200The fourth annual NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combination race marks the only event in which competitors from the East and West go head-to-head with championship points on the line. This year’s race serves as the third race of the season for both the East and the West.

Beyond the $183,706 in prize money and posted awards at stake, competitors are out to gain bragging rights in coming away as the top overall driver in this event each year.

Although the season is young, some talented young drivers have already started to make a name for themselves in both the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

There are 17 drivers registered for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year program in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. In the first two races this year, rookies earned 65% of the top-10 finishes, including both wins.

Ten drivers initially registered this season for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, meanwhile. Rookies garnered four of the top-10 finishing positions in the season opener, including the runner-up spot, and accounted for three in the top 10 in the second event.

While NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star Kyle Busch will not be back to defend his East-West Challenge win at Iowa, Joe Gibbs Racing will return with 17-year-old Max Gresham behind the wheel of the No. 18 Toyota. Gresham drove the same car to a third-place finish in the K&N Pro Series West race at Iowa last September.

Fellow JGR driver Brett Moffitt will look for his first win at his home track, Iowa Speedway. The 17-year-old from Grimes finished sixth overall in the East-West race and was fourth in the West Series race at Iowa last fall.

Moffitt is not the only Iowa native slated to compete in the East-West Challenge this year. He will be joined by Cedar Rapids’ Joey Gase, who will make his K&N Pro Series East debut in the No. 08 of Spraker Racing Enterprises. Gase is a development driver for SS Green Light Racing.

While the more experienced series drivers generally filled the top finishing spots in the first three editions of the East-West combination race, a few veterans have encountered tough luck each year at Iowa.

A 27th-place finish in 2008 is the best outcome in this event for Eric Holmes (No. 20 NAPA Toyota), a two-time champion in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. He also recorded a 38th-place finish in 2007 and a 36th-place finish last year.

Although Matt Kobyluck (No. 40 Mohegan Sun Resort Casino Chevrolet) is the K&N Pro Series East active wins leader, and has won at 11 different tracks, he has an average finish of 20th overall in the first three East-West Challenges at Iowa, with a best effort of eighth in 2008.

Kobyluck is the only active NASCAR K&N Pro Series East driver to compete in each of the first three East-West Challenges. Jeff Anton, John Salemi and Eddie MacDonald have competed in two apiece.

Among the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West entries this year at Iowa, four drivers have competed in all three of the previous combination races there. In addition to Holmes – Daryl Harr (No. 71 WestWorld Computers Chevrolet), David Mayhew (No. 17 MMI Services/Ron’s Rear Ends/KHI Chevrolet) and Brett Thompson (No. 61 Rich Thompson Trucking Chevrolet) will be making their fourth appearance in this event.

For some drivers focused on the season-long title, meanwhile, the Iowa event can serve as a turning point in their effort. Ryan Truex (No. 00 NAPA Toyota) crashed out and finished 33rd in last year’s race, then went on to reel off seven-straight top-three finishes to earn the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship.

The Bass Pro Shops in Altoona, Iowa,

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR and Iowa Speedway, in conjunction with The NASCAR Foundation, will hold a special NASCAR Day Bowling Challenge on Friday, May 21. The event, which will pit fans, media and the top drivers in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series, will take place at the newly opened Bass Pro Shops in Altoona, Iowa.

“We are looking forward to a little friendly rivalry with the stars from NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series, members of the Iowa media and, of course, the wonderful Iowa Speedway race fans,” said Craig Armstrong, Vice President of Promotions and Communications for the Newton oval track. “Bass Pro Shops in Altoona offered to host us in their great new bowling facility, and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate NASCAR Day than having fun with the friends of NASCAR.”

The NASCAR Day Bowling Challenge will run from 7-9 p.m. and is a perfect opportunity for fans to meet the drivers up close prior to the running of the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 at Iowa Speedway in Newton on Sunday, May 23. The fourth annual combination race between the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West – the top step in NASCAR’s developmental ladder to its national series – has quickly become a signature event on the series’ racing calendar.

NASCAR Day is celebrating its seventh year. Annually celebrated on the third Friday in May, NASCAR Day is a charitable celebration of the NASCAR spirit that enables fans and partners to join together to make a difference in the lives of children. NASCAR Day encourages fans to make a $5 donation for a collectible lapel pin which in turn will support programs that help children live happier, healthier lives.

Pins are currently available at Bass Pro Shops locations throughout the United States.

“We are so excited to have Bass Pro Shops on board as a retail partner for our NASCAR Day program this year,” said Sandy Marshall, executive director of The NASCAR Foundation. “The NASCAR Day Bowling Challenge will be a great way for area fans to come out and celebrate NASCAR Day on May 21.”

The NASCAR Day Bowling Challenge is free and open to the public.

Both series points leaders, Cole Whitt in the East and Greg Pursley in the West, will be on hand to take part in the bowling face-off, which will take place following the driver meet-and-greet and will feature six teams each comprised of two drivers, a media member, and a race fan. Fans will have a chance to win one of five spots online at www.iowaspeedway.com. The final fan will be selected from those in attendance at the event Friday evening.

Whitt, a former USAC open-wheel standout, will be joined on the East teams by fellow 18-year-old Ty Dillon, the grandson of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car owner Richard Childress; Matt Kobyluck, 2008 series champion and two-time NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown winner; Zach Germain, son of NASCAR national series car owner Steve Germain; and Joey Gase, the 17-year-old Cedar Rapids standout who will be making his series debut in his home state with Spraker Racing.

Pursley, a former NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion, will be joined on the West teams by Paulie Harraka, the 2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Sunoco Rookie of the Year; Moses Smith, the 2008 and 2009 series Most Popular Driver Award winner; Jonathon Gomez, a Late Model standout in Idaho before moving up to the West last season; Blake Koch, runner-up to Harraka for series Rookie of the Year in 2009; and Johnathan Hale, the 19-year-old California driver in his third year in the series.

The Goodyear Dealers of Iowa 200 is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. CT. The race has been won the past three years by Joey Logano (2007), Brian Ickler (2008) and Kyle Busch (2009). Ticket information for the race is available at www.iowaspeedway.com.

Remembering the #45

As the mom of a NASCAR driver, remembering Adam Kyler Petty so soon after celebrating Mother’s Day, takes on a special, if sad significance. It is difficult to believe it has been ten years since the horrific crash that took the life of the first fourth-generation driver in NASCAR history. His father Kyle Petty, grandfather Richard Petty, and great-grandfather Lee Petty have paved a golden road of racing heritage.

Having been born into stock car racing "royalty," Petty began his professional racing career in 1998, shortly after he turned eighteen. Like his father Kyle, he won his first ARCA RE/MAX Series start, in the #45 Sprint/Spree Pontiac at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

A short two years later, on May 12, 2000, Adam, age nineteen, was practicing at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway when the throttle of his car stuck, compelling him head-on into a wall. The impact killed Petty instantly. His death helped lead NASCAR to mandate the use of a kill switch on the steering wheel.

As a mother, I find it difficult to focus past the pain generated by Adam’s death. However, incredibly, five months after Adam's death, his family partnered with Paul Newman and the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp to begin the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, North Carolina, as a memorial to Adam. Victory Junction provides life-changing experiences for kids with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses. Out of despair, hope can sprout. My thoughts and prayers are with the Petty family during this difficult day.

Moses' Other Job

Star Race Cars and Moses Smith Racing jointly announced on September 7, 2009 that Moses Smith Racing, LLC. (MSR), headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, will take over all support for the approximately 300 Standard FM rotary-powered race cars currently in use across North America, as well as the MSR sports racer, a full-bodied version of the Standard FM.

For 2010, Moses Smith Racing is proud to introduce the Formula Mazda Network and the new Formula Mazda Logo. "Since our recent acquisition of the Formula Mazda, we are working diligently to reestablish the FM Network that has slowly dwindled in recent years. It is our goal to continue focusing our efforts on the rebirth of the Formula Mazda."

Chuckwalla Valley Raceway (CVR) is planned to be Southern California's premier automobile and motorcycle racing, training, and testing road course race track facility. CVR occupies 1,100 acres that is completely fenced and secured. The facility currently has one road course track operational that is 2.68 miles long (a little longer than the old Riverside International Raceway) and features seventeen (17) turns, is 40 feet wide, multiple elevation changes, a couple of double apex turns, a long banked turn, and a tricky three turn off-cambered section that mimics (to a lesser degree) the famed corkscrew at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The track was designed by internationally known motorcycle racing school operator, designer, and author ("Features of Race Track Design") Ed Bargy.

Driver Profile: Moses Smith

The following article was written by Darren Pope from the Columbia NASCAR Examiner in August of 2009. NASCAR Race Mom just rediscovered it and liked it so much; it is worth a re-post. Thanks Darren.

Recently I spoke with Camping World Series West driver Moses Smith. Smith drives the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/ White Flyer Toyota Camry in the series. I asked him several questions about his racing career and future plans. What really came through during my interview was that this is a guy who really loves racing, and he definitely has the backing of his sponsors, the support of his family and fans, and most importantly, the skill needed to achieve even more success in the future.

Moses has been racing in the CWSW since 2006 and started running full time in the series in 2007. He has posted 7 top-five and 20 top-ten career CWSW finishes and won the 2008 CWSW Most Popular Driver Award. He is certainly one of the fan favorites again this year, although according to Smith the competition is tough and repeating won't be easy. "We're working hard at it. Me and my mom and all of my fans...hopefully the fans will come through for me and we can win it again this year."

Moses mother, "z", is definitely out there promoting him in a big way. I ran across her on Twitter and it was through her that I was able to set up my interview with him. How important has she been to Moses' success? "Huge. She's a trooper," said Moses. "She's the kind of person I can go to and ask, 'Hey, what do you think about this, or what do you think about that', and she doesn't hem and haw about it. She tells me exactly what she thinks...she's played a big part in what I've been able to do."

Smith's interest in racing began early in life. His father used to race and worked on a crew when Moses was a young boy. When did Moses first know he wanted to race? "I remember hanging around race shops with my dad when I was about three years old," he said. "I think I first knew I wanted to race when I was about 10 years old."

Smith started out racing go-karts in the late 80's and saw success right from the start. He won the California State Championship and also became the youngest member of the San Diego Karting Associates Board of Directors.

Before he began his own professional racing career Moses worked in nearly every aspect of of the sport. He worked for several race teams as a mechanic and crew member, as well as a crew chief. He also worked as an Instructor for Jim Hall Kart Racing School, Skip Barber Racing School, and Bob Bondurant School of High Performance.

Moses began racing professionally when he ran a few Formula Mazda events in 2000. His success in that series was almost immediate. In 2001 Moses won the Star Mazda West Coast "Rookie of the Year" title. In 2002 he won the Star Mazda West Coast Championship, and missed winning the Star Mazda North American Pro Series Championship by a single point. He has also run races in the Toyota Atlantic Series and the Infiniti Pro Series.

What are his future plans? Well, Moses has a solid relationship with his sponsors (HASA Pool Products, White Flyer, TCI Leasing/Rentals, Blimpie Sub Shops) and he says they are always looking for new opportunities. He plans to run more races in the Camping World Series West, and maybe some Camping World Series East races. He also hopes to run a couple Nationwide Series races next year.

For now Smith is concentrating on his CWSW team. The next race on the schedule is August 15th, the Toyota/NAPA 150 at Colorado National Speedway. How does he feel about his chances there? "Pretty good. Out of all the ovals we run this is one of the tracks where we always seem to run well. I think we qualified third there last year, and finished fifth after we had a flat tire." Jokingly he added, "If we don't have any flat tires I think our chances are pretty good."

What are some of his favorite tracks on the CWSW schedule? "Out of the road courses I like Infineon...I always ran well there when I raced Formula cars." His least favorite? (Laughing) Oh, I don't know. Roseville, (All American Speedway) we just seem to tear stuff up there. It's a 1/3 mile oval and it's hard to pass without hitting something. It's just tough to race clean there."

With three races remaining on the CWSW schedule this season Smith is currently 8th in the point standings, 15 points out of 7th and 88 points out of the top five. He is one of only 9 drivers to start every race on the schedule this season. Although a CWSW championship is probably out of reach this season, a top five isn't out of the question if he can finish out the year with some strong runs.

Before wrapping up I asked Moses if there was anything he'd like to add, unfortunately I had some problems with my recording equipment near the end of the interview so the exact quote was lost, but without hesitation he told me that he wanted to thank all of his sponsors and especially the fans for all of their support. My apologies for losing that quote, but I wanted to make sure that I got that message out.

If you'd like more info on Moses, or you want to cast a vote for him as the CWSW 2009 Most Popular Driver you can find his website here.

Since I know you all like video I've included some youtube clips of Moses at the California Speedway Road Course and at Road Atlanta from his Formula Mazda days below.
