Free Virtual Summer Camp for Grades 7th Plus

Each year, 20 million families rely on summer camps as a way to fill the days with engaging and educational activities. But with no end in sight to U.S. social distancing, this year’s traditional summer camps are much less likely to open or have already closed.

History Through the Lens of #NASCAR

Even if social distancing restrictions loosen, many parents will continue to be concerned about exposing their kids to large groups.

Varsity Tutors will be hosting a "Virtual Summer Camp" starting on Monday (June 1st) through the end of August. Each half-day camp will be a week-long, with interactive enrichment-based classes. Plus, they'll be completely free!

One of the more unique classes is: History Through the Lens of NASCAR, which is designed for grades Seventh (7th) through Twelfth (12th).

In the class, students will learn about the origins of #NASCAR racing and how the evolution of the sport parallels and even leads to changes in American history and culture. Students will learn about the cities that host speedways, the improvements in technology that have made racing faster and safer, and the growth of the sport and its business into its unique place in American culture today.

Remember this class is free!

Coca Cola 600 Returns to Honor Fallen Service Members

Coca Cola 600 Returns to Honor Fallen Service Members #NASCAR

In what has become an annual tradition during the Coca-Cola 600, the names of U.S. Armed Forces members who sacrificed their lives for our country will be proudly displayed on the windshields of each of the 40 NASCAR Cup Series cars participating in the race.

Several of the names were chosen due to personal connections the team or sponsor had to the fallen service members.

Three of the Stewart-Haas Racing cars will feature the names of soldiers killed on May 23, 2011, when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device in the country’s eastern Kunar province. The deaths of Staff Sergeant Kristofferson Lorenzo (will be on Kevin Harvick’s No. 4 Ford), Private First Class William Blevins (on the No. 10 of Aric Almirola) and Private First Class Andrew Krippner (on the No. 14 of Clint Bowyer) had an impact on team fabricator Matthew Ridgway, a U.S. Army veteran. While Ridgway did not know the three men personally, he would later serve in the same battalion as the fallen soldiers honored on the team’s cars.
Kurt Busch and the No. 1 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet will carry the name of U.S. Navy Petty Officer Second Class Philip Grieser on the windshield during Sunday’s race. Grieser was the chief of Seabee team 1013 and was killed in a base attack in 1969 while serving in the Vietnam War. His son, Doug Newell, is an electrician for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Brennan Poole’s No. 15 Spartan Mosquito Chevy Camaro will proudly honor SFC. Nathan Ross

Chapman from 1st Special Forces Group. Chapman, from San Antonio, Texas, was killed on January 4, 2002, in Khost, Afghanistan. Three members of the Spartan Mosquito family also served in the 1st Special Forces Group.

With Sunday’s race to run without fans or special guests in attendance, each of the families honored as part of 600 Miles of Remembrance on Sunday will receive an acrylic replica of the racecar header with the fallen service member’s name and rank from NASCAR and Coca-Cola. Additionally, Coca-Cola is hosting a private pre-race virtual concert by country artist Justin Moore for Gold Star Families.

Charlotte Motor Speedway will continue its long-standing tradition of military tributes in recognition of Memorial Day Weekend. In addition to the pre-race military flyover, the race broadcast on FOX will capture a moment of silence at the conclusion of Stage 2, when all cars will stop on pit road to honor to the fallen.

The Briscoe Family Suffers a Miscarriage

The Briscoe Family Suffers a Miscarriage
Chase with Wife Marissa Briscoe during happier times. #NASCAR

Chase David Wayne Briscoe is an American professional stock car racing driver. He currently competes full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, driving the No. 98 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing with Fred Biagi.

Chase is just twenty-five years old; so most would consider him a 'kid.' However, this athlete had to deal with a grown-up tragedy yesterday.

Briscoe was at Darlington Raceway preparing for a race and watching the events unfold at home over FaceTime as a sonogram machine was brought in to double-check.

“As I watched the doctor do all the stuff on the ultra sound I’ll never forget when she said “Now for the heartbeat” and then the empty black screen I saw and hearing her say “I’m so sorry,” Briscoe wrote. "It was like time stopped, nothing else even mattered."
NRM's positive thoughts and prayers are with the Briscoe family during this difficult time.

Xfinity Series' Return Delayed Due to Weather

Xfinity Series' Return Delayed Due to Weather

Race Postponed until 05/21/2020

NASCAR postponed Tuesday night's scheduled Toyota 200 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway until Thursday at noon ET (FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) because of persistent rain showers in the region.

All the cars passed inspection with no issues before Tuesday's rain postponement was announced. Kody Vanderwal in the No. 52 Means Motorsports Chevrolet (originally starting 21st) and Joe Graf Jr. in the No. 08 SS Green Light Racing Chevrolet (originally starting 36th) will both start from the rear of the field for unapproved adjustments.

A second NASCAR Cup Series race at the historic 1.366-mile track - the Toyota 500 - is still scheduled for Wednesday evening (6 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Xfinity Series championship leader Harrison Burton will start 12th alongside Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe, who trails Burton by three points in the championship. This will be the Xfinity Series Darlington track debut for the 20-year old Burton.

Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, who is scheduled to compete in all seven of the first NASCAR races back (at Darlington and Charlotte), will start 26th. He is the only former winner in the field.
