Darlington -The Track Too Tough To Tame

Darlington -The Track Too Tough To Tame

History of Darlington

Darlington -The Track Too Tough To Tame

Let's go back to the fall of 1949. Harold Brasington, a local businessman in rural Darlington, South Carolina, stood and stared at an old cotton field. While most just saw a used-up piece of land, Brasington saw potential for this area to become part of the fast-growing sport of racing, so he set out on the project known as Harold's Folly, a 1 1/4-mile speedway.

His original oval design was rejected when the land owner, Sherman Ramsey, informed him that he didn't want his minnow pond disturbed, and so was born DarlingtonRaceway's signature oval shape, in which turns three and four were narrowed.

Fast forward to Labor Day 1950. The first race was set, and Darlington opened its gates to a shocking 25,000 fans. Since then, the raceway has been deemed the “track too tough to tame," with names like Baker, Flock, Thomas, Pearson, Yarborough, Petty, and Johnson becoming commonplace in Victory Lane. But one of the most notable names, even to those who aren't die-hard racing fans, is Earnhardt.

Darlington -The Track Too Tough To Tame

Mom 'N' Pops

Since May 1975, in his home state of North Carolina, Earnhardt made a name for himself in racing. It didn't take long for him to catch sponsors' eyes, and in the 1979 season, he signed his first full-time Winston Cup contract, and the legend was born. His racing career was second to none and was the inspiration his four children needed to join the family business.

All of his kids have made their mark on racing either as drivers or on the pit crew. Specifically, Dale Jr., Kelley, and Kerry drove in their Mom 'N' Pops cars in the '90s. These all-white cars with a black nose and black bumper, proudly sporting the Mom 'n' Pops Country Ham logo on the front, are now classics in racing, and this Labor Day weekend, Advance Auto Parts and Valvoline are bringing that look back.

Sport Clips Haircuts VFW 200

This Xfinity Series race is set to take off Sept. 2, 2017, at the legendary Darlington Speedway. Racers will sport their throwback cars, with Advance Auto Parts driver Justin Allgaier driving the Mom 'N' Pops-inspired No. 7 car. The Advance Auto Parts logo will adorn the hood of the car exactly as the Mom 'N' Pops logo did, while Justin embraces the Earnhardt paint scheme and legacy in a race to victory. The logo may have changed, but Advance and Valvoline are maintaining the legend of the Earnhardts. It's sure to bring a bit of nostalgia to race fans everywhere.

Don't miss this throwback race, fun for the whole family, September 2 at Darlington Raceway. And be sure to take advantage of all it has to offer while you're there.

Earns a Chase Playoff Berth

Jeremy Clements Pulls Off the Spin and Win - #NASCAR #NXS

If you are like most NASCAR fans, you were glued to the television Sunday for the Xfinity Race at Road America yesterday in the ‘Johnsonville 180’. With Watkins Glen International and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in the record books, this was the last road course remains on the NASCAR XFINITY Series 2017 schedule.

Driver Brendan Gaughan was the only previous series Road America winner entered in the race. Therefore, the odds of a new Road America winner was high. However, Jeremy Clements was not high on that list. After all, he had never won a #NASCAR Xfinity series race in his two hundred and fifty-five starts.

Jeremy Clements Pulls Off the Spin and Win - #NASCAR #NXS

Jeremy drives for a family team he co-owns with his father Tony Clements. A less funded team, it was not surprising that his race vehicle is a Chevrolet that was built in 2008; the car he wrecked at Mid-Ohio two weeks earlier.

Therefore the task of winning in a top-level NASCAR event was not a simple one for Clements. It has been a decade since a driver with no Cup experience won a Xfinity race on a team with no Cup ties However, he held the race lead for a handful of laps when the leaders pitted early in the third stage and he was out in front for the one that mattered most in the 45-lap event.

“I was licking my chops,” Clements said. “I was just so excited, I couldn’t believe that the (win) was right there for me to get.

Then with just two laps remaining, Jeremy Clements and Matt Tifft battled down the stretch at Road America. Both spin after making contact and spin. Clements manage to scramble back onto the track in first place and persisted there for the win.

“I was really beating a lot of guys out of those last two corners. Especially the last corner; I could get in really deep. That’s where I thought I could pass (Tifft) at. I should have maybe been a little more patient. But it was coming on the last lap. He’s probably mad though, and I’m sorry to him.”

ABOUT JEREMY Jeremy Clements is carrying on a family tradition long rooted in NASCAR. He is the grandson of famed NASCAR owner and renowned engine builder, Crawford Clements. Jeremy’s uncle, Louis Clements, was a Championship Crew Chief with Rex White.

Jeremy Clements Pulls Off the Spin and Win - #NASCAR #NXSTogether, Crawford and Louis spent over 25 years making history with their engine development programs and ownership of race cars. Today his father and Jeremy Clements Racing Team owner, Tony Clements, continues to run Clements Automotive, a company started by Crawford in 1965.

Clements Automotive is a recognized leader in racing and performance engine building specializing in building complete racing engines, cylinder head services, dyno testing, custom porting, and CNC machining for virtually all types of racing applications including ARCA, Pro Cup, Dirt Late Model, and nascar. With racing in his blood and plenty of horsepower in his daily life, Jeremy continues the tradition.

Jeremy has outgrown the label of a “young gun” and has shown longevity with his talent, distinctive style and charm.

EARLY YEARS Introduced to racing by his grandfather, Jeremy began his racing career at the age of seven in go-karts where he picked up 47 feature wins before successfully tackling the various ranks of dirt racing. Moving to Modified and Stock four-cylinders in 1999, Jeremy would rack up 59 wins and three track championships over the next three years. His dirt experience proved beneficial in transitioning the determined teen to asphalt racing.

LATE MODEL & ARCA RACING SERIES In 2002 Jeremy made his debut in the ARCA Series, driving the No. 3 for Broadway Motors (Ken Appling) at Talladega Superspeedway. He qualified 6th 2002 and 2003, Jeremy would run several ARCA races and continue to dominate on dirt running and finished 17th. Throughout the Super Late Models.

On July 24, 2004, Jeremy suffered an injury that threatened his racing career while running his No. 51 Late Model at 311 Speedway in Madison, NC. The torque arm broke under his car and sent a steel driveshaft piercing through his cockpit, almost removing his right hand. Initially doctors predicted that he would be lucky to have any movement at all in the hand. Jeremy underwent eight surgeries and months of physical therapy to regain use of his right hand.

In July 2005, Jeremy returned to the dirt track almost exactly a year after his hand injury, testing his Late Model. During the remainder of the year he would race late models and returned to the ARCA series for two races. Jeremy continued to make strides towards his goal of running in NASCAR. In 2006 he started 10 ARCA races with Ken Appling, with 3 top 5 finishes and 1 top 10 finish. He was also selected by General Motors to participate in a three track test with Richard Childress Racing.

During the 2007 season, Jeremy started 12 ARCA races with Ken Appling, earning his first ARCA win at Nashville Superspeedway after qualifying second and leading 48 laps. He also earned 5 top 5 finishes and 2 top 10 finishes. In 2008, Jeremy ran seven races in the ARCA series with Ken Appling. He earned 2 top 5 finishes and 3 top 10 finishes and came close to repeating his 2007 win at Nashville Superspeedway, finishing in 2nd place.

NASCAR XFINITY SERIES Jeremy was one of the youngest drivers to ever qualify for a NASCAR Nationwide Series event at age 18, racing for Jerry Young at Pikes Peak on July 26, 2003. He finished the race in 31rst after an accident on lap 28 ended his day.

Jeremy would return to the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2007, running 5 races with McGill Motorsports, driving the No. 36 Chevrolet. In 2008, Jeremy ran two races for this family team, driving the No. 50 at Gateway and Homestead. During 2009, he ran the first half of the season driving the No. 50 for his family team and the second half of the season for Johnny Davis in the No. 0. His best finish came at Auto Club Speedway on October 10, 2009, where he qualified 21rst and finished in 12th position. Jeremy Clements Racing/Clements Racing Engines was formed in 2010 giving Jeremy the opportunity to run a partial schedule funded by Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. Running under Johnny Davis on a very limited budget, the team qualified for 16 races, with Jeremy’s then best NNS career finish of 10th at Gateway International Raceway.

In 2011, the decision was made to move Jeremy full time into the NNS and run a full season driving the No. 51 for Jeremy Clements Racing. Although primary sponsorship was not secured, Jeremy and JCR remained competitive in the field, completing the season with 4 top 15 finishes and 7 top 20 As in 2011, the Team would again overcome limited sponsorship support and remain competitive on the track during the 2012 season.

Last year, Clements finished the season in fifteenth position – he is currently in seventeenth position. However, with his race victory, he earned a berth in the 2017 NASCAR XFINITY Series playoffs.

Gilliland Edges Eggleston For Roseburg Win

Scores K&N Pro West Victory With Late Pass On BMR Teammate

Todd Gilliland edged his Bill McAnally Racing teammate Chris Eggleston to win the Clint Newell Toyota 150 Presented by NAPA AUTO PARTS at Douglas County Speedway on Saturday.

Todd Gilliland edged his Bill McAnally Racing teammate Chris Eggleston to win the Clint Newell Toyota 150 Presented by NAPA AUTO PARTS - #NASCAR #KNWest

The pair waged a fierce side-by-side battle around the tight 3/8-mile track, thrilling fans that packed the fairgrounds venue in Roseburg, Oregon for the annual NASCAR K&N Pro Series West event.

Gilliland, the defending series champion, pulled ahead coming to the checkered flag in the No. 16 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry – to capture his sixth victory of the season and his 13th career series win. He and Eggleston, the 2015 series champion who drives the No. 99 NAPA Belts & Hoses / NAPA Filters Toyota Camry, have won 10 of the 11 series races so far this season.

Their teammate Derek Kraus finished third in the No. 19 Carlyle Tools / NAPA Belts & Hoses Toyota Camry, to give BMR its third 1-2-3 finish of the season.

“That was tough racing right there with Chris Eggleston,” said Gilliland, a 17-year-old from Sherrills Ford, North Carolina. “We both had pretty evenly matched cars tonight. It showed when we could race side by side for a really long time.

“It was pretty nerve wracking, but we’re out here for the win and the 16 team got it tonight,” he said. “I want to thank NAPA, Toyota TRD, Frontline Enterprises, and everyone who gets us to the race track.”

Gilliland, who started third on the grid, acknowledged how tough it was to run so many laps side by side.

“It’s really flat,” he said. “The second groove usually doesn’t come in too much. Tonight, we were stuck on the bottom a lot. You just have to be really patient and stay really calm when you’re side by side like that for so many laps.”

Chris Eggleston won his fourth pole of the year in qualifying. #NASCAR #KNWest

Eggleston, who won his fourth pole of the year in qualifying, talked about the battle in which the pair traded the lead back-and-forth nine times.

“It seemed like we got off to a really good start and had a very, very well balanced race car there at the beginning,” said the series veteran from Erie, Colorado. “Even though the 16 and 19 fell way back, I felt we did a good job of conserving our tires, getting only quarter-throttle down the straight away.

“The 16 was probably a little better than us midway through the race,” Eggleston said. “He kind of used us up quite a bit here and there. We did everything we could to keep our composure and keep pace with him. He made a few mistakes in lapped traffic and we were able to get back by him. He used us up, again, and we were able to get back by him cleanly. And he used us up, again.

“I hope the fans liked it, because that was really exciting,” Eggleston said. “I wish we had been on the other side of the fence, obviously – sitting in the winner’s circle. But it was a good 1-2-3 finish for BMR.”

In last year’s Roseburg race, Gilliland and Eggleston tangled while racing for the lead and were knocked out of contention for the win.

Gilliland, a NASCAR Next driver, extended his lead in the championship standings to five points over Eggleston. Gilliland has six wins, eight top-five, and 10 top-10 finishes in 11 starts this season.

Eggleston has four wins, 10 top-five, and 11 top-10 finishes.

Kraus – a 15-year-old from Stratford, Wisconsin – leads the rookie points and is third in the overall standings. He has six top-five and seven top-10 finishes.

Saturday’s win by Gilliland marked the eighth win by BMR in the past 11 series races at the Roseburg track.

The event had a variety of special activities with sponsors, including a Fan Appreciation Gala on Friday evening. Activities on Saturday featured a big Toyota Let’s Go Places VIP Hospitality Corral and a VIP pit tour.

The race, which was the 14th series event at Douglas County Speedway, is scheduled to be televised on NBCSN on Sept. 2 at 5:30 p.m. PT.

Johnsonville Named Title Sponsor For NASCAR Xfinity Series Event at Road America

Chevrolet Extends Partnership As Official Vehicle of Road America
Road America and Chevrolet announced an extension of their partnership with Chevrolet remaining as the Official Vehicle of the storied four-mile, 14-turn road circuit, through the end of 2019.

"We're honored that Chevrolet has played a key role in Road America's racing heritage from the track's opening in 1955 to today," said George Bruggenthies, Road America president and general manager. "We're excited to celebrate this longstanding association of two iconic racing brands and to continue our long, successful relationship together."

Road America figures prominently in Chevrolet's racing history. Bill Mitchell, GM's vice president of design, was an avid racer who fielded the original Sting Ray racer driven by Corvette legends John Fitch and Dick Thompson at Road America. Mitchell chose Elkhart Lake as the venue to preview his stunning Mako Shark concept car in June 1961; the Shark's sharp-edged body and hidden headlights foreshadowed key features of the production 1963 Corvette.

Wisconsin-based racers Augie Pabst and Jim Jeffords excelled in sports car racing in the early '60s with their Chevy-powered machines. The lightweight Grand Sport Corvette created by Corvette chief engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov rumbled through Road America's rolling hills with racing luminaries Roger Penske, Jim Hall and Hap Sharp sharing the driving chores. Notable Chevrolet racers who have made their mark on the legendary circuit include Tony DeLorenzo, Jerry Thompson, John Greenwood, John Heinricy, Ron Fellows, and many more.

From the glory days of the original solid-axle Corvettes, Sting Rays, and Grand Sports to today's championship-winning Corvettes campaigned by Corvette Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the high-speed 4-mile track in Wisconsin's rolling Kettel Moraine has long been a battleground for generations of Corvette road racers. Even the inaugural Corvette World Tribute in 2011 saw the return of the Corvette Bridge. Standing like a sentinel at the approach to Turn 6, the Corvette Bridge has witnessed amazing feats by drivers and machines since it first carried the Corvette logo in 1963. Quite simply, the Wisconsin circuit has served proudly as Corvette's proving grounds and spiritual home.

Chevrolet Extends Partnership As Official Vehicle of Road America

Chevrolet will continue to activate its sponsorship with a strong annual at-track presence that includes signage, corporate hospitality and vehicle displays at major races, use of the track for private consumer events, promotions and much more. In addition, a variety of Chevy trucks and SUVs will be used on the property and Chevrolet Corvettes will serve as the Official Pace Car for most events.

"Road America is one of the most beautiful and historic race tracks at which we compete each year, and we are thrilled to continue our long-running relationship," said Michael Stouffer, Chevrolet Motorsports Marketing Manager for IndyCar and Sportscar Racing. "We've been racing there for more than 60 years, and this affiliation allows us to further showcase our products and connect with current and prospective customers through trackside displays and promotions at the track."

On Friday, August 25, NASCAR XFINITY Series team haulers will gather at a new location, Plymouth High School, in nearby Plymouth, Wis., prior to their convoy to Road America for the NASCAR XFINITY Johnsonville 180. Last year's hauler parade drew hundreds of NASCAR fans and an impressive welcome was also extended between local residents.

The Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, City of Plymouth, Plymouth Joint School District, the Downtown Arts and Merchants Group and Road America expect even greater hauler participation and attendance this year and encourage all fans, residents and businesses along the route to participate in welcoming the return of the NASCAR XFINITY Series teams to Sheboygan County.

The haulers will gather for the party at Plymouth High School between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Fans are invited to attend, free of charge and the event will be held rain or shine. The convoy to the track will be led by a Johnsonville semi and will depart around 5:30 p.m. following through Plymouth before proceeding north on Hwy 67 to Road America.

The new location of the hauler parade at Plymouth High School provides additional exposure for the new NASCAR Acceleration Nation program to nearby middle school and elementary students. The NASCAR Acceleration Nation Program is the sport's first-ever national learning and entertainment platform created just for kids.

NASCAR Acceleration Nation will impact children across the country through an in-school Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) program, created together with Scholastic. Classroom content will focus on teaching the aerodynamic principles of Drag, Downforce and Drafting, the NASCAR Three D's of Speed™.

The fun and dynamic AccelerationNation.com will engage kids with exclusive content and NASCAR-themed games and activities, while the NASCAR Acceleration Nation Experience will bring the platform to life for children and families at racetracks. Families are encouraged to come out to the hauler parade to see and learn more about the new NASCAR Acceleration Nation program.
