Inside Michael Jordan’s-Quest-for-NASCAR Glory

Inside Michael Jordan’s-Quest-for-NASCAR Glory

I'm so proud that in four years we've gotten to the point of competing for a championship,” Michael Jordan.

Inside Michael Jordan’s-Quest-for-NASCAR Glory

In recent years, His Airness has given up the basketball court for the racetrack, where winning a championship is still his top priority. We hit pit lane with His Airness as his 23XI Racing squad competed for a title.

It’s NASCAR’s championship weekend at Phoenix Raceway, and Tyler Reddick is hustling to his Number 45 car to put in his first qualifying lap of the day. As he speedwalks down pit lane, he spots—casually seated on the pit wall—the guy who signs his paychecks: Michael Jordan.

Yes, that Michael Jordan, the basketball GOAT and arguably most famous athlete of all time, who just so happens to be the majority owner of 23XI Racing, Reddick’s team.

“Go make it happen, big dog,” MJ says as he shakes hands with his driver.

Jordan co-founded 23XI with NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin four years ago. (Hamlin races in the Number 11 car—hence the team’s name.) Since then, His Airness has been a frequent presence at races. But for those in the know, MJ’s interest in NASCAR was no surprise. Jordan has loved the sport since he was a child growing up in North Carolina, a hotbed for stock-car racing, saying years ago that he “sets his alarm clock on Sundays” for each race.

This year, with his team making a championship charge, MJ has been a mainstay at the track, supporting his team week to week through the ups and downs of NASCAR’s 10-month season. And while he’s been able to provide lots of pep talks and encouragement, he’s found that going for a title as an owner is a lot different from when he was an NBA player.

“It's a very different feeling,” Jordan tells me via email after the race. “It's like how my parents must have felt when they would come to watch me play for the Bulls. I'm nervous, but there's truly nothing I can do. I have no ability to influence the outcome of the race, so I can only support and cheer on our team and drivers."

Of course, MJ being MJ, he’s not totally content to just sit helplessly on the sidelines. Billy Scott, Tyler Reddick’s crew chief, says that Jordan frequently speaks with him about strategy and other technical aspects of the race.

“At first it was kind of surprising how invested, how knowledgeable, and how big a fan he is,” Scott says. “He’ll have questions about tires, fall-off, things like that—stuff most fans are not even aware of.”

After a big strategy call a few weeks back in Charlotte helped Reddick avoid being bounced from the playoffs, Jordan effectively told Scott that he would pass the crew chief the ball with time running out—the ultimate sign that he had earned MJ’s trust.

“It’s just reassuring to have him around,” Scott adds. “You can see his competitive nature in everything he does. He wants to figure out a way to help and be a part of this as much as anybody.”

Jordan looks on as Reddick sets out on his qualifying lap, roaring around the oval in his souped-up Toyota Camry with Monster Energy’s “The Beast” brand emblazoned on the side. He sets the fifth-quickest lap of the session, generating roars from his team back in the pit box, MJ among them.

Later, while decompressing in his hauler (the massive 18-wheelers that serve as each NASCAR team's traveling home base from week to week), Reddick reflects on what a wild season it’s been.

“I’ve literally dreamt of being a NASCAR champion since I was a child,” he says. But winning it with MJ cheering beside him?

“Okay, maybe I didn’t dream that part up as a kid,” he laughs.

In only four years, 23XI has gone from an underdog story to a championship contender, but it’s been disrupting NASCAR since day one. For starters, it’s always been a unique team: Jordan is one of only two Black owners in the sport, and the team employs Bubba Wallace, NASCAR’s only Black driver. As time rolled on, the team brought on a second car (now fielding, appropriately enough, car numbers 23 and 45), and Nike-owned Jordan Brand came on as a sponsor.

The team’s been disrupting off the track, too. The elephant in the room throughout championship weekend is that Jordan’s team, along with one other, is currently suing NASCAR, calling out the sport’s governing body as “monopolistic bullies.” In fact, just days prior to the championship race, MJ appeared in court for the case’s first preliminary hearing.

“I put all my cards on the table,” he told reporters outside the courthouse, before quickly adding: “I’m looking forward to winning a championship this weekend.”

Back at the racetrack, co-owner Hamlin admits to the media that 23XI may end up not racing at all next season, though most insiders seem convinced that an agreement will be reached. Scott and Reddick, meanwhile, insist the legal dispute is not a distraction.

“They’ve done a good job of letting us handle the competition, so it’s been pretty well separated,” Scott says.

Reddick, looking cool and calm, insists that his attention is squarely aimed at winning the title.

“I’ve seen everyone’s mindset, the attitude of everyone around the shop, the focus,” he says. “Everything has been in a really good place, lasered in on what we need to do.”

On race day, MJ strolls up to the 23XI hauler in a green Jordan-brand shirt and camo pants, his presence drawing more than a few oohs and aahs from VIP guests and fans. He delivers a feisty speech to the team behind closed doors and high fives the pit crew as he exits. At one point, he pretends to put on headphones and says to an engineer, “Keep feeding me that info!"

Roger Penske, one of the biggest names in motorsports and a fellow NASCAR team owner, stops by to shake MJ’s hand and wish him luck. “Good luck to you as well,” Jordan replies cordially.

When the race begins, the two men’s differing ownership styles are on full display. Television coverage shows Penske watching the action stoically from a suite overlooking the track. Jordan, on the other hand, catches the entire race from the pit box, standing just feet away from his crew, practically breathing down their necks during pit stops.

As the race unfolds, Reddick hovers around the top 10 but can’t make much progress. MJ pumps his fist and high-fives Reddick’s dad when the driver makes a daring move to gain ground after a restart, putting him into fifth—and back in contention for the title. But as the laps tick away, Reddick simply can’t gain ground, and Team Penske’s Joey Logano ultimately wins the race, and the championship.

As the drivers exit their cars, MJ is the first one there to console a heartbroken Reddick.

“Enjoy your vacation, then we go right back at it,” MJ says. Reddick nods and replies, “Back to work.”

The team may have lost, but the weekend still feels like a win. In just a few years, 23XI has become a true contender, And it’s been a while since we’ve had the chance to see MJ back in contention for a title, even if it’s on a racetrack and not the hardwood.

“I don’t know when he’s last had that type of success in the sports arena,” Scott says, “but hopefully we’ve been able to give him just a small percentage of what he’s been looking for since he stopped playing.”

For his part, MJ seems content, even though he’s not exactly accustomed to losing championships.

"I'm so proud that in four years we've gotten to the point of competing for a championship,” Jordan tells me. “But I want us to keep improving. I have aspirations to win a championship and that's what we're constantly working toward."

Todd Gilliland to Carry on Love’s Travel Stop Livery Into 2025 and Beyond

Todd Gilliland to Carry on Love’s Travel Stop Livery Into 2025 and Beyond

Todd will follow in his father, David’s, footsteps

Todd Gilliland to Carry on Love’s Travel Stop Livery Into 2025 and Beyond

Todd Gilliland will enter the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season with new, yet familiar colors. Gilliland will pilot the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Front Row Motorsports (FRM). Todd will follow in his father, David’s, footsteps in representing the Love’s colors at FRM.

As Love’s enters its 13th consecutive season with FRM, it was David Gilliland who first raced the Love’s livery in the 2013 Daytona 500. David went on to race for the company in 2014 and 2015, giving the FRM partner their first pole and top-five finish.

Todd first began racing for Love’s, under the Speedco banner, in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series beginning in 2020 and again in 2021. Heading into the 2025 season, the 24-year-old driver now steps into the # 34 Love’s Travel Stops Ford and is FRM’s longest tenured driver.

"It is really humbling to race the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops Ford Mustang beginning next season," said Gilliland. “It’s just another cool moment in my career to race for a company that represented my father at FRM. The 34 Ford is what started FRM in the Cup Series and there is a lot of history with Love’s, FRM, and my family. I still remember watching my dad race the Love’s Ford."

"I do not take this next step lightly," continued Gilliland. "I have seen the rise of the team and the new level of expectations. It is an honor that Love’s is putting their trust in me to continue to grow this team and compete for wins and get into the playoffs. I am gracious for this opportunity and look forward to 2025."

Love’s will once again be the premier partner of the team and will adorn the No. 34 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for more than half of the season, beginning at the Daytona 500.

The crew chief and other partners will be announced before the start of the 2025 season.

RCR President Torrey Galida Named 2024 VBH Veteran of the Year

RCR President Torrey Galida Named 2024 VBH Veteran of the Year

"NASCAR wouldn't be here today if we didn't have our Veterans and our active troops." R. Childress

RCR President Torrey Galida Named 2024 VBH Veteran of the Year

For more than a decade, Richard Childress Racing has opened its doors to Veterans in the community to provide an opportunity for fellowship, entertainment and resources to improve the wellbeing of Veterans. For the last couple of years, Veterans Bridge Home (VBH) has been RCR’s partner in making these monthly events happen on the RCR campus. During a special Veterans Day edition of VBH/RCR’s popular Veterans Coffee event, RCR president Torrey Galida was surprised with the 2024 VBH Veteran of the Year award. This award is presented to a Veteran who exemplifies the organization’s mission of a stronger community.

Galida has welcomed thousands of Veterans to RCR’s campus each year, alongside RCR’s Chairman and CEO, Richard Childress.

“There are so many Veterans in that organization (VBH) who do so many great things and I never really put myself on that list,” said Galida. “I’ve been to some of their events. There were two recently in Charlotte, and when you attend, you really see how impressive the VBH organization is. I was really surprised and obviously very honored that they would pick me.”

Galida joined the US Navy in 1984 as an intelligence officer, and spent six years on active duty. For three years he was stationed with an F-14 fighter squadron in Virginia Beach and deployed on the aircraft carrier “USS Nimitz”, followed by three years of service at the Pentagon.

When Galida left the military, he went to business school at Duke University where he was recruited to work for Ford Motor Company as part of a rotational program for MBA students. His second rotation was within motorsports, where he learned to love the sport and began the career path that eventually led him to serving as president of RCR. Since joining RCR’s executive ranks in 2011, Galida has joined Richard Childress in being a strong proponent of supporting Veterans.

With the support of Childress, RCR and its strong base of partners have made numerous contributions to Veteran Coffee events. In the past 11 months alone, Veterans have been treated to a Coca-Cola 600 car unveil with the No. 3 Chevrolet, toy drives, special guest speakers, and even the presentation of a car to a local veteran. On average, more than 300 attendees gather on RCR’s campus on the second Wednesday of almost every month. Several of the larger Veterans Coffee events have included special programming and drawn in excess of 850 attendees.

Last April, RCR and VBH recognized Vietnam War Veterans and drew approximately 850 attendees, easily making it one of the largest gatherings of Vietnam Veterans in the country. The gathering featured several special speakers, including Colonel Walter “Joe” Marm, a retired Vietnam Veteran and recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and Colonel Norman A. McDaniel, a USAF retired Vietnam Veteran and Prisoner of War for six years.

In September, Veterans Coffee attendees were treated to visits by post 9/11 “War on Terror” Veteran and Wilkes County resident Kevin Holland, MSG, US Army Retired Veteran. Holland brought a unique perspective to Veterans Coffee in sharing his story of conducting over two thousand combat missions and his involvement on the team that located Saddam Hussein.

That following month in October, Veterans Coffee changed one local Veteran’s life forever. The National Auto Body Council (NABC) Recycled Rides program partnered up with Sherwin Williams to give away a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox so that local Veteran Keith Bracken would have transportation to and from work and to help transport his kids to school. Before the vehicle was awarded to Bracken, he would walk four miles a day to work just to provide for his family and would rely on neighbors and friends to get his kids to school. Bracken currently resides in High Point, North Carolina, after serving in the United States Marine Corps from 2006 to 2015 where he served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Earlier this fall, Deputy Vice President of Operations and retired USMC Gunnery Sergeant Mike Stuckey spoke on behalf of Toys for Tots to kick-off the 2024 campaign. VBH has participated with local Marine Corps units each year to donate new, unwrapped and unused toys to ensure kids in the community wake up to presents under the tree. Toys for Tots, a proud sponsor of the No. 3 Chevrolet driven by Austin Dillon, is currently collecting toys at RCR for children in the community.

“The support Richard Childress and his team have provided over the last 10 years has touched the lives of thousands of Veterans and their family members,” said Don Timmons, Veteran and community engagement manager of VBH “The meetings provide the opportunity for Veterans to get out of their house (de-isolate), be with other Veterans and see that they are cared about and respected for their service to our country.”

Galida said it was Timmons who first approached RCR and asked if the organization would be interested in hosting Veterans Coffee, which was an easy yes for Childress and Galida.

“I had no idea what it could be, and it’s really cool,” said Galida. “The best one we ever did was in 2019 for the 75th anniversary of D-Day. We had almost 1,400 people and 75 World War II Veterans. “The more I get to know Don, the more impressed I am with him. He’s a really great guy and does such a good job. He has an incredible network of Veterans throughout this area and the whole state. He is really committed to it and works really hard to make it all happen. Over the years, as I have gotten to see all the work that goes into it and everything that Don does, I’ve realized it’s a labor for love for him. We’re so lucky to have him.”

Following the D-Day event, RCR made it their goal to host at least two to three big events during the year where breakfast or lunch is served to Veterans along with a special program.

“The sacrifices that these Veterans have all made are really important to our country. It’s great to be able to go up and talk to them and it always makes me a little nostalgic. I always think back on the really good times I had when I was in the military. You tend to do that. You don’t think about the bad times, you think about the good times,” continued Galida.

Many of the Veterans who attend VBH/RCR’s Veterans Coffees continue to come back each month and help spread the word to bring more of their local Veterans together and give them an opportunity to connect to resources each month. According to many of the Veteran attendees, family members also benefit from these gatherings in connecting with other Veterans and their family members.

RCR’s Veterans Coffees will continue throughout 2025 and are set to be held on the second Wednesday of every month, with the exception of January and July. For more information, please visit veteransbridgehome.com or our Veterans Coffee page at rcrracing.com/rcr-veterans-coffee

Emerick, Flake Win Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builder Showdown

The event pairs the top 12 Hendrick Automotive Group Certified Master Technicians with 12 of the best engine assemblers from Hendrick Motorsports.

Emerick, Flake Win Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builder Showdown

It was a dramatic end to the 2024 Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builder Showdown presented by Valvoline, a competition held yearly on the campus of Hendrick Motorsports and named in the honor of the legendry NASCAR engine builder.

Danny Emerick, a long-time engine assembler for Hendrick Motorsports, and his Hendrick Automotive Group partner Shane Flake, both of Charlotte, North Carolina, captured the 23rd edition with a winning time of 24 minutes, 2.44 seconds. The team of Hendrick Motorsports’ Scott Vester and Hendrick Automotive Group’s Joe Gagatch, clocked in a build time of 24:33.08 to finish second.

It was the second time Emerick and Flake had teamed up in the competition, bettering their runner-up finish from 2021. The victory placed Emerick No. 1 on the all-time victory list with his seventh build championship, overtaking Vester who has six.

“We were really hungry,” said Emerick, who secured second with a time of 25:39.54 after being in the first qualifying build of the week. “We had to sit and watch all the other builds. (Shane) was so up for this challenge. I can’t tell you how excited we are to win this one. My family is here, my parents are here. This was a big one.”

“Danny helped a lot,” Flake added. “I feel like I (was) really good at the bottom end (of the engine). I followed Danny’s lead and had a lot of fun.”

The event pairs the top 12 Hendrick Automotive Group Certified Master Technicians with 12 of the best engine assemblers from Hendrick Motorsports. The teams are solidified through a blind draw on opening night, competing over a two-day period. Six separate qualifying rounds determine the two quickest teams, which compete for the title and a brand-new NAPA toolbox filled with tools for the winning team.

The goal of the competition is to piece together a 243-part R07 Chevrolet NASCAR V8 engine in the quickest amount of time with the least penalties. While it was an efficient build, Emerick and Flake still incurred a single, 30-second penalty for a loose valve cover nut. A mistake Emerick recognized as soon as the final build was complete, adding to the post-build drama.

“I know we had a loose bolt in there somewhere,” Emerick noted.

Emerick, Flake Win Randy Dorton Hendrick Engine Builder Showdown

While Emerick and Flake came out on top, the duo was a bit behind over the first half of the build, placing the oil pan and flipping the engine – a point roughly halfway through the competition - approximately two minutes behind Vester and Gagatch. Undeterred, Emerick and Flake made up quite a bit of time in the second half, attaching parts such as the valve cover, headers, and fuel injection system in an extremely efficient manner.

It was the second-consecutive year the two Hendrick Motorsports engine assemblers had gone head-to-head in the finale, with Emerick winning both times.

The week started out well for Vester and Gagatch, as they scored the quickest build of qualifying with a time of 23:06.19.

“I felt the bottom end (of the engine build) went really well,” said Vester, who also incurred a 30-second penalty. “Then we made some major mistakes on the top side, areas we had to back off (our pace) and pull the valve cover off and fix. We did change a few things from our qualifying build because we were waiting for each other to finish. It went better the second time, but we just had too many mistakes. Joe did a fantastic job both days.”

“I knew something was wrong, but didn’t know exactly what it was in the moment,” Gagatch said, who was able to grab the valve cover mid-stream to make the adjustment. “He was great at instructing me on what to do there.”

This weekend was an emotional one for Vester as well, as he’s moving over to Hendrick Automotive Group to manage the company’s Florida facilities.

“This was Scott’s last build and I wanted to be a part of it win, lose or draw,” Emerick said. “He’s been an amazing teammate and an inspiration for me to get better.”

2024 NASCAR Rookies of the Year

2024 NASCAR Rookies of the Year

Carson Hocevar – Cup; Jesse Love – Xfinity; Layne Riggs - Trucks

National Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year (ROY) points system: Since the 2018 season, the Sunoco Rookie of the Year point system mirrors the points structure that awards the season-long championship, including stage points and playoff points, with the eventual Sunoco Rookie of the Year earning the most points throughout the season.

As is the case with the season-long points structure, a race win earns a Sunoco Rookie 40 points and five playoff points. A second-place finish earns a Sunoco Rookie 35 points; a third-place finish nets 34 points, and so on. A Sunoco Rookie who wins a stage earns 10 points and one playoff point.

The Sunoco Rookie of the Year points system is in all three NASCAR national series – the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Truck Series

Carson Hocevar – Cup ROY

Carson Hocevar – #NASCAR Cup ROY

Carson Hocevar, driver of Spire Motorsports’  No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, has been named the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year.

The Portage, Mich., native earned the honors on the strength of one top-five, six top-10 and 13 top-15 finishes. In his first full-season at the controls of the No. 77 Chevrolet, Hocevar brought home a career best third-place finish in the Cup Series September visit to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.\

“Being named Sunoco Rookie of the Year is special,” said Hocevar. “I got beat out for Rookie of the Year in the CRAFTSMAN Truck series, and I didn’t run in the Xfinity Series full time so to win the award in the NASCAR Cup Series is a huge accomplishment for our whole team. It definitely didn’t come easy. Josh (Berry) has won a bunch of Xfinity races, and the No. 4 team won tons of races and a championship with Rodney (Childers) and (Kevin) Harvick. We also had Zane (Smith) in contention, who raced for Spire Motorsports and has won several Truck Series races and a championship. It was a good group of accomplished drivers vying for it, and it means a lot to come out on top. We ran really strong at the end of the year and were able to pull away in terms of points. These last several weeks show our capabilities as a team.

“This award will be something that will live with me my whole career, and I’m proud to be known as the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year. There’s an elite list of guys who have won it, and many of them went on to win races and championships. The award is something you only have one shot at. You can never go back and try to win Rookie or the Year later down the line. It is the only thing like that in racing. It is cool to win something so significant this year, and the mission is now to get the No. 77 car to Victory Lane and in the playoffs in 2025.”

Jesse Love – Xfinity ROY

Jesse Love – #NASCAR Xfinity ROY

Nineteen year old Jesse Love, who drives the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, made a name for himself already in his inaugural season at the Xfinity Series level. One win, seven top-five finishes, eighteen top-ten finishes, and five pole awards on his way to the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award.

“Jesse is an exceptionally talented racecar driver, having achieved championships in every series he has raced. Hard to believe he has been racing for 14 years, started at 5. Jesse is cool under pressure. He knows what he wants and how the car needs to feel. He races way above his years. We are looking forward to his second year in the Whelen car. The year 2025 promises to be thrilling. Jesse has demonstrated remarkable driving skill. His car control and adaptability indicate that he will keep progressing,” said RCR Xfinity Series Competition Director Danny Lawrence.

Love’s average finish in his first year of Xfinity Series competition has been an impeccable 11.97, which was better than some of the Championship 4 contenders.

While Love fell short of a Championship 4 appearance at Phoenix Raceway, he can say he made it farther than many other seasoned veterans have in the Xfinity Series.

“To get this far into the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs in our first year together is an accomplishment,” said Love.

Layne Riggs - Truck Series ROY

Layne Riggs - #NASCAR Truck Series ROY

Through 22 races, Front Row Motorsports Layne Riggs had mathematically clinched the 2024 Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors but was not officially awarded the honor until he finished the season in good standing, per the program guidelines and eligibility.

“Winning Rookie of the Year was a great testament to my team and what we were able to accomplish at the end of the season,” Riggs said. “The beginning of the year was a rocky and tough start, but we fought through the growing pains and that brought us together as a strong team. At the end of the year, we really showed what we had.”

Sunoco has a long and rich history. In 1920, Sunoco opens its first gas station in Ardmore, PA. The era of "premium gas at regular gas prices" began. Sunoco blended its first high-octane fuels, 260 and 280 in 1950 and racers came knocking. Click here for more Sunoco history.

Ford Performance & Roush Yates Engines Win 3rd NASCAR Cup Series Championship In A Row

Joey Logano – 2024 #NASCAR Cup Champion

Team Penske’s Joey Logano won Sunday’s Championship race at Phoenix Raceway, marking his 36th career NASCAR Cup Series victory, fourth of the year, and his fourth at Phoenix. This win also marks the first time Ford has won the NASCAR Cup Series title three years in a row (Logano in 2022, Blaney in 2023, and Logano in 2024) and the first time that has been achieved by Team Penske. Logano is the first Ford driver to win at least three Cup Series championships and the 10th driver in NASCAR history, joining fellow three-time winners Tony Stewart, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, David Pearson and Lee Petty; four-time champion Jeff Gordon; and seven-time champions Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty.

Joey Logano – 2024 #NASCAR Cup Champion

“Congratulations to Roger, Tim, Paul, Joey, and everyone at Team Penske on a 1-2 finish at Phoenix and the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Championship!,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “Both of the Team Penske cars were fast throughout the race and Joey did an amazing job on that last restart. We’re proud to have powered three NASCAR Cup Series Championships in a row, and it’s an honor to stand alongside such a talented and hardworking team.”

Joey Logano – 2024 #NASCAR Cup Champion

“I love the playoffs. I love it, man. What a race. What a Team Penske battle there at the end. I had a good restart and was able to get in front of the 12. He had a lot of long run speed there and that was all I had there to hold him off. We have three of them. That’s really special. What a team to fight through today. We went through a little bit of adversity in throughout the race. I can’t thank Ford enough and Shell and Pennzoil and Hunt Brother’s Pizza.  Paul Wolfe, what a crew chief I have. I’ve got the best team. I don’t know if I’m the best driver, but I’ve got the best team and together we’re very well-rounded and can show up when it matters the most. We’ve got a mentally tough team that can make things happen when it matters,” commented Logano.

Carson Hocevar Named 2024 #NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year

Zeigler Auto Group sponsored driver Carson Hocevar named 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year. Hocevar pilots the No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Spire Motorsports.

Zeigler Auto Group announced its partnership with Hocevar and Spire last December. Since then the organization has partnered with the Rookie of the Year for a series of races and philanthropic efforts in the Kalamazoo - Portage area.

"It has been an incredible experience to support Carson this year for a number of key races. This is a very well deserved accolade; and we are proud of what he represents on and off the track," said Aaron Zeigler, president and owner of Zeigler Auto Group.

The Portage, Mich., native earned the honors on the strength of one top-five, six top-10 and 13 top-15 finishes. In his first full-season at the controls of the No. 77 Chevrolet, Hocevar brought home a career best third-place finish in the Cup Series September visit to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Hocevar impressed throughout his rookie campaign, accumulating 686 points and being the top finishing rookie in 15 races on NASCAR's senior circuit. He out-distanced his next closest competitor by a handsome 107-point advantage when the checkered flag fell on Sunday's season finale at Phoenix Raceway.

"Being named Sunoco Rookie of the Year is special," said Hocevar. "I got beat out for Rookie of the Year in the CRAFTSMAN Truck series, and I didn't run in the Xfinity Series full time so to win the award in the NASCAR Cup Series is a huge accomplishment for our whole team. It definitely didn't come easy. Josh (Berry) has won a bunch of Xfinity races, and the No. 4 team won tons of races and a championship with Rodney (Childers) and (Kevin) Harvick. We also had Zane (Smith) in contention, who raced for Spire Motorsport and has won several Truck Series races and a championship. It was a good group of accomplished drivers vying for it, and it means a lot to come out on top. We ran really strong at the end of the year and were able to pull away in terms of points. These last several weeks show our capabilities as a team.

"The award will be something that will live with me my whole career, and I'm proud to be known as the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year. There's an elite list of guys who have won it, and many of them went on to win races and championships. The award is something you only have one shot at. You can never go back and try to win Rookie or the Year later down the line. It is the only thing like that in racing. It is cool to win something so significant this year, and the mission is now to get the No. 77 car in the playoffs in 2025."

The 21-year-old made his NCS debut for Spire Motorsports on June 4, 2020 at World Wide Technology Raceway. In addition to his NCS debut, Hocevar made four NASCAR Xfinity Series starts for Spire Motorsports in 2023, with a pair of top-10 finishes coming in May at Darlington Raceway (sixth) and Charlotte Motor Speedway (eighth).

Hocevar was first paired with veteran crew chief Luke Lambert last season when he competed behind the wheel of the No. 42 machine in eight of the divisions final 10 races. He scored a then career-best 11th- place finish at the 2023 Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Lambert followed Hocevar to Spire Motorsports where he was chosen to lead the team's No. 77 efforts for the 2024 season.

"I am incredibly proud of the effort Carson (Hocevar) and the No. 77 team have put into the 2024 season," said Lambert. "Carson is a tremendous talent and that combined with his effort and dedication has led to solid performance on track, and continuous improvement throughout the season. I am honored to be a part of Spire Motorsports as we continue to progress as a NASCAR Cup Series team. Carson and the No. 77 team are committed to constant improvement and look forward to building on this rookie season in 2025."

Hocevar made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) debut on August 1, 2019 at Eldora Speedway and collected four wins, one pole, 21 top-five and 33 top-10 finishes over his CRAFTSMAN Truck Series career. He finished 10th in points in 2021 and 2022 and earned a berth in the 2023 Championship 4, where he ultimately finished third in the season-ending championship point standings.

"It has been an exciting season watching Carson, Luke and the whole No. 77 team grow together," said Spire Motorsports president Doug Duchardt. "Carson's finishes have improved throughout the year and the team has been running competitively during the playoffs, racing door-to-door with the playoff contenders. We are proud of Carson and the No. 77 team for winning the NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award and I'm looking forward to seeing them continue to raise the bar next year."

Hocevar's accomplishment marks the first time a Chevrolet-backed driver has achieved the title since Daniel Hemric in 2019. He is the third Michigan-born driver to earn the honor, following in the footsteps of Erik Jones (2017) and Johnny Benson (1996.)

Aric Almirola Sweeps ’24 Xfinity Series Races at Martinsville

Tickets punched and punches thrown – it was Martinsville after all, and in Saturday’s National Debt Relief 250, Aric Almirola made Martinsville Speedway his personal playground.

Leading 150 of 250 laps in a No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota that was the clear class of the field, Almirola won his second race in his second NASCAR Xfinity Series start at the 0.526-mile short track and earned a spot for his car in the series owners’ Championship 4.

For Almirola, who won at Martinsville in April in his first Xfinity attempt, the victory was the third of the season in 13 starts and the seventh of his career.

“We had an amazing car here in the spring, and we made a few tweaks to it,” said Almirola, who also swept the first and second stages. “I wasn’t totally happy with it, honestly, in the spring. And we showed up (Friday) and we were awful. I was like ‘Oh, no, what did we do?’ ”

“They went to work last night and came up with a lot of changes to make to the car, and it was so hooked up today. It would just do everything I wanted it to. This is such a special place. This is by far my favorite race track. I’m just so thankful.”

Pole: Parker Retzlaff

Christian Eckes Survives Late-Race Restarts, Dominates Truck Series Race at Martinsville

Christian Eckes Survives Late-Race Restarts

It was indeed a special night for NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Christian Eckes, who dominated Friday night’s Long John Silver’s 200 at Martinsville Speedway.

Eschewing a trip to pit road between the first and second stages at the 0.526-mile short track, Eckes led the first 104 laps, swept the stages and worked his way back through the field from 19th after pitting at the Stage 2 break.

Undeterred by the chaos that produced 11 cautions for 81 laps, Eckes took the lead for the final time on Lap 172 in a side-by-side battle against pole winner Ty Majeski, who regained the top spot when Eckes came to pit road for the only time during the 200-lap event.

“Something really special,” Eckes said of the effort of his No. 19 McAnally-Hilgemann Racing team and the quality of his Chevrolet. “We came here last year, and we weren’t really that great… we were maybe a sixth-place truck (started sixth and finished 15th).

“And we worked really hard on it, and here we are in Victory Lane. So just super proud of this entire team.”
