For Points Leader Jeff Gordon
ONE TRACK REMAINS

Jeff Gordon has won at every track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit, except Kentucky Speedway. This weekend, he looks to complete the sweep and take the Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet SS to Victory Lane!

Point's Leader, Jeff Gordon in the #24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet SS

Kentucky is a very challenging track that is tough to win on. The transitions are tricky – it’s pretty flat from the back straightaway into to Turn 3 plus there’s a huge bump going in there. Winning at all the tracks would be something that I would be very proud of. But it seems every time we get close to accomplishing that goal, another track is added! But I think winning at all the tracks would be a pretty awesome feat.

In three starts at the 1.5 mile track in Kentucky, Gordon has:
  • 0 wins,
  • 0 poles,
  • 1 top five,
  • 3 top tens,
  • an average starting position of 11.7 and
  • an average finishing position of 7.7

Bickford Looks for Home Track Win
Saturday in Sonoma

Bickford will look for a home track win Saturday in Sonoma.
 (Getty Images for NASCAR)

In professional sports, playing a home game is considered an advantage for the competitors.

For James Bickford, driver of the No. 6 Sunrise Ford Ford in NASCAR’s K&N Pro Series West, this weekend’s Carneros 200 at Sonoma Raceway can’t come soon enough. The sixteen-year-old Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender, currently seventh in the series championship points standings, lives just 15 minutes from the track in Napa, California.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this race,” Bickford said. “Sonoma presents a lot of challenges, but I’m really looking forward to it.”

Saturday’s race will be Bickford’s first on a road course, and he expects a strong contingent of family and friends to be at the track. He will also be carrying a bit of veteran’s knowledge into the event, courtesy of his cousin, four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon.

“He took me around the course in a rental car when they were here for a tire test, and told me what he does in a Sprint Cup car in every corner,” Bickford said of Gordon, who has five wins at Sonoma and nine road course victories in his career, most all-time in NASCAR’s premier series.

Bickford said the first three races in his inaugural K&N Pro Series West season were “a little rough,” but his two most recent outings have been encouraging for him and the entire team.

“At Iowa, we had a solid fourth-place finish among the West cars, and at Kern County, we ran near the front all night and finished sixth. We are definitely headed in the right direction,” Bickford said.

Bickford knows getting his first win of the season on the twisty, 1.99-mile road course won’t be easy.

“There is zero room for mistakes, and you have to stay focused every single lap.”

Crown Royal and NASCAR Race Mom Say Thank You To Local Hero

Please help me win my first of two Crown Royal Challenges – It is so very simple and so very important. Just click on the link below and retweet. If you want to ‘favor,’ that would be a plus.

https://twitter.com/zwriter/status/477488859849035776

If you would share with your friends and family, it would be greatly appreciated!

Crown Royal and NASCAR Race Mom thank local hero Dave Geary
for all his service with a bottle of Crown Royal Black.
NASCAR Race Mom had a tough time scheduling an interview with Dave Geary. This man keeps busy. Besides working his own computer repair business, Dave’s Computer Repair And Sales, Dave is also very involved in charity work.

This morning he and his motorcycle friends, the American Legion Riders, were busy serving as an escort for a young man who had to have his leg amputated in order to save his life.

He is preparing for a ride across the United States for “The Eliminate Project.” With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus; a deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.

On Tuesday (06/17/2014), Dave will be flying off to Africa to deliver two dozen computers for orphanages and schools, at no cost to the recipients.

Dave Geary is also a retired U.S. Air Force Disabled Veteran who has lived in Escondido, CA since January 2000.

In 1991, Staff Sargent David M. Geary distinguished himself by meritorious achievement while participating in sustained aerial flight as a KC-10A Flight Engineer Technician on the Saudi Arabian Peninsula. The airmanship and courage he exhibited in the successful completion of important air refueling missions, under extreme hazardous conditions, demonstrated his outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty. Geary retired from the Air Force in 1994.

However, like most of the protagonists, NASCAR Race Mom has interviewed, Geary really does not talk much about his accomplishments. He would rather discuss his children; three of his six are currently serving in the military.

Of course we had to discuss some NASCAR. Geary is a new NASCAR Fan. “My girlfriend introduced me to NASCAR about two years ago. She knows all about the drivers and rules!”

Just like John Wayne Walding, the winner of the annual Crown Royal’s “Your Hero’s Name Here” program, Dave has never been to a NASCAR Race event. However, he would love to experience one in person. Dale Jr. is his favorite driver and we chortled about Jr.’s pass for the win past “Bad Brad” in the last race at Pocono.

It was a real pleasure to spend time with Dave Geary and thank him for all he sacrificed by partnering with Crown Royal to present him with a bottle of Crown Royal Black.  Geary is not only a Air Force hero; he continues to serve as a community leader.

John Wayne Walding
Crown Royal’s American Hero

He was to be named Toby Wayne after his grandfather; however his parent’s plans were augmented after his auspicious birth on America’s Independence Day.

“As my dad explained it to me,” John Wayne Walding recalled, “he said you have a cool birthday . . . you need a cool name to go with it!”

Justin Moore announced Green Beret John Wayne Walding as Namesake of NASCAR Brickyard 400 at the live broadcast of the CMT Music Awards.
Justin Moore announced Green Beret John Wayne Walding as Namesake
of NASCAR Brickyard 400 at the live broadcast of the CMT Music Awards.

Now as the winner of the annual Crown Royal’s “Your Hero’s Name Here” program, that “cool” name will be proudly displayed as the title of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway this July.

"The fact that Crown Royal cares enough to say 'thank you' for what I've done is a true validation for my sacrifice," Walding stated “the magnitude of those two words can not be underestimated."

John Wayne was nominated for this honor by his older brother Mark. The “Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding ‘400’ at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com will be the eighth year Crown Royal and the voting fans have awarded naming rights to a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race to a deserving American.

As part of the grand-prize package, Walding will take part in a VIP at-track experience that will include garage tours, pace car rides and concerts by Big Machine Label Group artists. He will top off his first-time NASCAR track experience by delivering the trophy bearing his name to the race winner in Victory Lane.

“I have been fighting the war for the last twelve years, so I really have not had time to take any time out and go to a race; so this is going to be one heck of a first NASCAR race . . . I am pretty sure my second race is going to suck after going to this one.” Walding bantered.

John is a Green Beret with twelve years of service with eight years in the Special Forces. In 2008, he was injured in a firefight and lost the lower part of his right leg. He has received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the Combat Infantry Badge. Within a year of losing his leg, John completed the 2009 Boston Marathon using a hand cycle! He came in fourth.

“The sacrifices that have been made by John Wayne Walding and countless heroes across the country serve as an inspiration to all of us at Crown Royal,” said Abby Wise, Brand Director for Crown Royal. “We’re excited to provide Walding a small token of our gratitude by renaming the NASCAR race at the famed Brickyard in his honor.”

John Wayne is also the founder of Five Toes Custom (5TC). 5TC is based on the idea of helping combat wounded vets and giving back to charity by building handcrafted precision rifles. The business employs wounded veterans in an effort to provide both support and direction within their lives.

However to hear John Wayne Walding tell it; he is not a hero.

“When they talk to me about the ‘Your Hero’s Name Here,’ I tell them that I am not the hero.” John Wayne Walding explained, “The guys who did not make it back are the heroes. We owe it to them to live well. Now to have this honor . . . . . I will do it for them and do the best that I can to honor their sacrifice.”

John Wayne Walding was born on the 4th of July and raised in Groesbeck, Texas. He joined the army after high school and deployed for the initial invasion into Iraq and for a second time in Afghanistan. He is the first amputee to graduate the Special Forces Sniper School. He is also a husband to his beautiful wife and a father to his four crazy children. John is thankful, humble and polite!

John Wayne Walding is a much bigger hero than he knows!

K&N Pro Series East News & Notes
Five Flags Speedway "Pensacola 150"

for the Pensacola 150.  (Getty Images for NASCAR)

With a K&N Pro Series East race under her belt at Five Flags, Ruston will be one of about 10 drivers with that experience at the oval located just north of the Gulf Coast beaches. She also has competed in a handful of late model shows at the track, but that experience is negated by changes to the racing surface.

“You used to have to conserve a lot more, but since they ground the track it’s pretty much all out every lap,” she stated. “I struggled with that a little last year because it wasn’t what I was used to there.”

A racer at heart, Ruston enjoys the shorter tracks on the schedule with Five Flags among her favorites.

“I really like the Pensacola track a lot. I like the speed there and the banking,” she said. “Some of the bigger tracks we go to it’s all about the cars. I feel that (Five Flags) is more of a driver’s track and I like that. It’s a fantastic track to race.”

John Wayne Walding
"Your Name Here" Winner

Meet the winner of Crown Royal's "Your Hero's Name Here" Program

BEING born on the fourth of July with a name like John Wayne, arguably few people could be called more American. But for this young Special Forces communications sergeant, the price of freedom was realized April 6, 2008, when he lost the lower half of his right leg to sniper fire during an operation in the Shok Valley of Afghanistan.

That day Walding, a native Texan, and his team ventured into territory previously untouched by coalition forces to capture several high-value targets. The mountain village where the insurgents were hiding had been used to stockpile weapons since the time of the Russian invasion in the 1980s.

With no roads leading into the valley, Operational Detachment-Alpha 3336, along with their Afghan commando counterparts, flew in by helicopter. Upon reaching the infiltration point, the team made a 10-foot jump out of the birds, as the pilots were unable to land. Many of them landed in a waist-deep, icy river, and with the temperatures already around 30 degrees Fahrenheit, the climate began to take its toll. In order to reach their target, the group made its way up a treacherous mountainside to the fortress-like village, which rested on a hill at about 10,000 feet.

All seemed quiet as they approached the compound. They knew the enemy was waiting for them, but were unable to tell where. When the lead element came to within a few hundred meters of the compound, they began to receive heavy fire from all directions. What ensued was a six-and-a-half-hour firefight, during which the team called in Air Force F-15s for danger-close air support 70 times. More than 150 insurgents were killed in the fight. But but due to approaching weather, rising casualties for the team, and nearly 200 insurgents closing in on their position, they were forced to withdraw.

Unfortunately, the approach route the team used to reach the village had been cut off. Stuck between a hail of gunfire and the edge of a cliff, their only option was to go down the cliff face. With intense firing still coming upon them, the team quickly scaled the mountain using rocks and branches growing out of the cliff. Every member of the team had sustained some form of injury, so the less injured helped the more critical casualties down the sheer face. Walding, having been shot near the knee by a sniper, tied his nearly severed leg to his thigh and began his descent. In order to reach the solid ground below, once he reached the bottom of the climb he, along with the others, had to make a 20-foot drop.

Walding and his teammates showed true bravery, bringing everyone off of the mountain despite the odds. Because of their teamwork and camaraderie, the 10 members of ODA 3336 present that day all returned safely, and were each awarded the Silver Star, Dec. 12, 2008.

"When you become a Green Beret, you become part of a brotherhood that you get nowhere else," Walding said.

Green Beret Announced As Namesake of Brickyard 400 During CMT Music Awards Live Broadcast

Crown Royal Awards US Army Sergeant First Class Retired John Wayne Walding Race Naming Rights Through Whisky Brand’s Annual “Your Hero’s Name Here” Program

NASHVILLE, Tenn., June 5, 2014 – When Green Beret John Wayne Walding attends his first NASCAR race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July, he’ll see a familiar name plastered around the historic race track – his own.

Walding was announced the winner of Crown Royal’s annual “Your Hero’s Name Here” program, which awards naming rights to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at IMS to a deserving American hero, during last night’s live broadcast of the CMT Music Awards. As the winner, Walding’s name will be incorporated into the official race title, the Crown Royal Presents the John Wayne Walding 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com.

Walding, of Little Elm, Texas, is a highly decorated Army veteran who served for 12 years, completing tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. While overseas in 2008, Walding was involved in a fire fight during a mission to capture a high value target, during which he lost the lower part of his right leg.

After recovering from his injury, Walding was the first amputee to graduate the Special Forces Sniper School. He completed the Army 10 miler on foot and the 2009 Boston Marathon utilizing a hand cycle, within a year of the accident. Among Walding’s many awards and badges are the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge. Walding was nominated for the program by his brother and lives in Little Elm with his wife Amy and their four children. He is the founder of Five Toes Custom, which employs wounded veterans in an effort to provide support and direction within their lives.

“The fact that Crown Royal cares enough to say ‘thank you’ for what I’ve done is a true validation for my sacrifice,” said Walding following the unveil event. “The magnitude of those two words goes above and beyond.”

On hand to take part in the program’s winner reveal event for the third year in a row was country music star and reigning ACM New Artist of the Year Justin Moore. Moore presented Walding with a custom-made Gibson guitar bearing the official race logo incorporating Walding’s name and thanked him for his service during the award show broadcast.

“To be able to be involved in this program’s winner reveal event for the third year in a row is really special to me,” said Moore. “We’ve had the opportunity to meet so many amazing heroes over the years and are looking forward to honoring John Wayne at the Brickyard this summer.”

Walding was joined in Nashville by the other four program finalists, Tara Hulett of Albany, N.Y.; James Bailey of Pamplin, Va.; Bryce Boyer of Wanship, Utah; and Tyler Whisenhunt of Gentry, Ark. The five finalists were selected from thousands of nominations submitted to CrownRoyalHeroes.com, and consumers 21+ voted for the hero they thought was most deserving of the honor.

As part of the grand-prize package, Walding will take part in a VIP at-track experience that will include garage tours, pace car rides and concerts by Big Machine Label Group artists. He’ll cap off the weekend by delivering the trophy bearing his name to the race winner in Victory Lane.

“We’re proud to participate in Crown Royal ‘Your Hero’s Name Here’ program for the third consecutive year,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “It’s been an honor to welcome so many great American heroes to our events and we’re anxious to host John Wayne for a great weekend of racing.”

truTV's Motor City Masters Heading

with Immersive Car-Design Installation

Motor City Masters Logo

Hosted by Brooke Burns, MOTOR CITY MASTERS pits 10 talented designers from different parts of the automotive industry against each other each week in the ambitious task of creating new, fully-functional concept cars based around a theme. One by one, designers who fall short will be sent home by the judges until only a single MOTOR CITY MASTER remains. Industry expert judges Jean Jennings and Harald Belker are joined by celebrity guest judges including actress Melissa Joan Hart, actor Jesse Metcalfe, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz, baseball great David Justice and former NASCAR driver Robby Gordon.

Motor City Masters is off to the races; truTV's new car design competition series will be at the center of an immersive car-design installation to be located in Pocono Raceway's Fan Fair for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from Pocono 400 during the weekend of June 7-8. Produced in collaboration with Chevrolet and premiering Tuesday, June 24, at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), Motor City Masters will bring together 10 experienced designers, with various specialties and backgrounds, all of whom share a passion for car design.

Motor City Masters judge Jean Jennings, legendary automotive journalist and former editor-in-chief of Automobile magazine, is scheduled to make appearances at Pocono Raceway throughout the weekend. She will be attending the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Drivers Meeting and will have a view of the action up close from Victory Lane. She'll also be blogging from the race at jeanknowscars.com.

truTV's Motor City Masters installation at Pocono Raceway will immerse fans in the world of custom car design, giving them the chance to emerge as Motor City Masters in their own right. Fans will have the opportunity to have their very own custom concept cars sketched out by an artist. They'll be able to pose for a photo with their sketch superimposed onto the cover of Automobile magazine, which they can then upload and share with friends via social media.

In addition to the Motor City Masters installation, truTV will be touted during sister network TNT's coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, which will begin with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from Pocono presented by the Dodge Charger on Sunday, June 8, at 1 p.m. (ET). On Saturday, members of TNT's NASCAR announcing team will describe their dream cars to two of the competing Motor City Masters designers: Camilo and Darby. The designers will sketch their ideas, which will then be showcased during TNT's NASCAR Summer Series coverage.

"NASCAR is the perfect outlet through which to spread the word about truTV's exciting new competition series Motor City Masters," said Puja Vohra, senior vice president of marketing and digital for truTV. "We look forward to plunging race fans into the fascinating world of car design, introducing them to Motor City Masters and giving them the chance to get their own design ideas put down on paper."

Among the other features of the Motor City Masters area at Pocono, a Camaro Z/28 and Corvette will be on display, exemplifying the high-end craftsmanship of Chevrolet. Fans will also be treated to their very own copy of their magazine cover shoot, as well as truTV tchotchkes (while supplies last).

Ben Rhodes turned in a dominating victory in the NASCAR Hall of Fame 150 Saturday night in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East action at historic Bowman Gray Stadium.

Rhodes, a NASCAR Next driver from Louisville, Kentucky, became the first driver in four all-time races at The Stadium to win from the pole. He led all but one of the 152 circuits to emerge with his third victory of the season and extend his lead in the K&N Pro Series East championship standings in his first Bowman Gray start.

“My Turner Scott Motorsports team just gave me a great car today,” said the 17-year-old. “(Crew chief Mark McFarland) and I communicate really well. I didn’t know what to expect here having never been here before. It’s good to have a great team to lean on.”

Rhodes’ triumph was not without challenges, however. He had to keep his No. 41 Alpha Energy Solutions Chevrolet out in front through 12 caution restarts – most with Gray Gaulding to his outside – on the tight quarter-mile for the hard-earned win.

“I had Gray right behind me just about the whole race,” said Rhodes. “I knew it was going to be a little tricky. I didn’t know if I was going to get moved up the track or not. If it wasn’t him, then it was going to be somebody else. That’s what this track creates.”

The final caution set up a green-white-checkered flag finish where Daniel Suárez beat Rhodes to the line to lead restart Lap 150, but Rhodes regained the advantage and held on for the checkers.

Suárez rallied from back in the pack after starting from the rear after making contact with the outside retaining wall during his qualifying run and finished as the NASCAR Hall of Fame 150 runner-up.

In his first appearance at the legendary quarter-mile, Rhodes posted a fast lap of 14.382 seconds (62.578 mph) to earn the all-important pole position. The Louisville, Kentucky native’s lap bested the series’ previous track record of 14.471 (62.193) established by Brett Moffitt a year ago.
