Saturday’s New England short track showdown at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) hosted three different divisions in a unique tripleheader aimed at highlighting three of the best short track divisions from both the United States and Canada. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and NASCAR Pinty’s Series joined the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour for the event.

NASCAR Race Mom is partial to the K&N Pro Series, where you can get acquainted with the ‘NASCAR Stars of Tomorrow’ in an ‘Up & Close’ setting.

The K&N Pro Series’ ‘Apple Barrel 125’ was the first series race at NHMS not held on a Cup weekend in nearly two decades. The race was the longest at the track for the series since 2011.

“It will be a little different being there without one of the top three series, it’s a little weird,” said Tyler Ankrum, the California rookie who leads the K&N Pro Series East standings with four wins — one of them at Loudon in July. “Every NASCAR track we’ve gone to all year, the Cup Series is there with us. You need to still be on top of your game, though — you should be on top of your game no matter what. You want to feel like a Rick Hendrick or a Joe Gibbs is watching you at these types of tracks, and they should be watching us. We’re the next thing — along with the Modifieds and the Pinty’s guys.”

Practice belonged to Chase Cabre. After Friday’s two practice sessions, it was Chase who paced the field in preparation for the thirteenth race of the fourteen-race championship points schedule. Brandon McReynolds, who posted a time of 29.498 seconds (129.121 mph) was just one-thousandth of a second behind Cabre.

Derek Kraus, a native of Stratford, Wisconsin, topped the qualifying charts with a time of 29.273 seconds (130.113 mph) around the 1.053-mile oval. Kraus’ pole marks the seventh of his K&N Pro Series career and second at New Hampshire.

Race format included two scheduled breaks in the ‘Apple Barrel 125’, during which, teams had the opportunity to change tires, adjust on the setup and get the car dialed in for the final laps. If the team put on new tires on the first stop, they were allowed to put that first scuffed set on during the second break; or they could ride it out and put on the new tires during the second stop.

After getting passed for the lead in the winding laps, Brandon McReynolds capitalized on a green-white-checkered finish to win the Apple Barrel 125 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday.

It is the first NASCAR K&N Pro Series East victory of McReynolds’ career in his 24th attempt dating back to 2011.

“It was pretty wild” said McReynolds. “I’ve always watched a lot of film on this place seeing races of my Dad when he won here so it’s a pretty special place to me — they call it the ‘Magic Mile’ which is pretty fitting.”

Brandon’s father, Larry, is a twenty-three-time NASCAR Cup Series winning crew chief including a 1996 win here at New Hampshire.

Despite a thirteenth place finish, Tyler Ankrum clinched the 2018 K&N Pro East title with one race remaining. Ankrum, a seventeen-year-old native of San Bernardino, California had yet to finish outside of the top-ten prior to today’s race, however, with teammate Tyler Dippel finishing just one spot ahead in twelfth, Ankrum leads Dippel by 50 points. The maximum a driver can earn in an event is fourty-eight.  Ankrum has four wins with an average finish of 4.3 this season.

The K&N Pro Series East season closer will be held at Dover International Speedway on Friday, October 5th.

Derek Kraus Gets Redemption, Wins at Gateway

In the second of two combination races between the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West this season, Derek Kraus was able get the best of both those worlds in Friday night’s Monaco Gateway Classic presented by the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame at Gateway Motorsports Park, as he wound up in Victory Lane.

Following finishes of 20th at Iowa and ninth at Evergreen, both where he ran out of fuel, the Stratford, Wisconsin, native was able to pull away late in the 120-lap event to earn his third K&N Pro Series win of the season and fourth of his career. It was a win he called his biggest.

“It was definitely a difficult night,” a relieved Kraus said. “About 15 laps into it, something with the spark plug went wrong, was really slow down the straightaways. We fell back, I don’t even know where we were, but we restarted the second stage in the back and drove up to third and caught the front two.”

Justin Haley Wins Thrilling Truck Playoff Race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series made the annual trip to Canada to open up their 2018 Playoffs at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Despite missing the 2018 Playoffs, Todd Gilliland seemed almost destined to win his first career truck series race Sunday at CTMP. Taking the lead on Lap 53 from Johnny Sauter, it was smooth sailing for Gilliland, until a late race caution set up a thrilling NASCAR Overtime battle with his Kyle Busch Motorsports teammate and Playoff driver Noah Gragson. Gragson, who won both previous stages, dove to pass Gilliland in the final turn.

In similar shades to the move made by Chase Elliott in the 2013 race, the contact sent both Gragson and Gilliland spinning. The two trucks blocked the racetrack, causing a massive pile up coming to the checkered flag. The ensuing carnage allowed fellow Playoff driver Justin Haley to sneak through the wreckage and win the Chevrolet Silverado 250.

The 19-year-old driver from Winamac, Indiana lead only a single lap all race long and it proved to be the most important one. With this victory, Haley claims his second checkered flag of the 2018 season.

"We were just in the right place at the right time" said Haley celebrating in Victory Lane. "I can’t thank everyone at GMS Racing enough; it was a truly blessed day."

Justin Allgaier Celebrates with a Burnout After Winning the ‘Johnsonville 180’

Justin Allgaier Powers to Fourth Xfinity Win of 2018 at Road America

Continuing to make the most of his banner year in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Justin Allgaier took advantage of a mistake by James Davison in the closing laps of the Johnsonville 180 to cruise to his fourth win of the season at the 4.048-mile road course of Road America.

Allgaier who used pit strategy throughout the 45-lap event to keep his No. 7 BRANDT Chevrolet Camaro up front elected to stay out when the final caution waved at Lap 38 when Josh Bilicki crashed in Turn 12.

But, a push from Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell on the Lap 39 restart, Davison grabbed the lead entering Turn 1 from Allgaier – but the Australian made a mistake and overshot the corner in Turn 8 – handing the lead back to Allgaier who then cruised to a 5.303 second victory over Matt Tifft.

"The last restart there, (James Davison) kind of left before I did and (Matt Tifft) gave me a shot based on he didn't think (Davison) was going. I spun the tires really bad after I got hit," Allgaier said in Victory Lane. "I thought I had gave it away.

"Then when he made the mistake down in (Turn) 8, I knew I just had to be smooth and fast. This team is awesome. I told them on the radio after the race that it was an honor to drive these race cars. I can thank everyone enough that's on this race team and back at JR Motorsports."

RAGBRAI to Make Pit Stop at Iowa Speedway

Cyclists invited to Ride The Track to benefit Iowa Speedway Cares

Thousands of bicyclists from around the world will pedal through Newton, Iowa on Wednesday, July 25. Newton has been chosen as an overnight stop for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), which runs July 22-28, 2018. The City of Newton will serve as host city for the first time since Iowa Speedway was built in 2006.

Cyclists invited to Ride The Track to benefit Iowa Speedway Cares

RAGBRAI cyclists are invited to Ride The Track from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, July 25. For a $5 donation to Iowa Speedway Cares, the Speedway’s charitable arm, riders can take as many laps around the 7/8-mile oval as they would like.

Tomorrow, an estimated 20,000 cyclists, volunteers and sponsors will embark on a 59.1-mile ride from Ames to Newton that will include the Ride The Track event at Iowa Speedway.

“Of the 200-plus events we’ll host at Iowa Speedway this year, RAGBRAI might be one of the most unique,” said Iowa Speedway President David Hyatt. “The riders will get a chance to check their speed with a lap on the ‘Fastest Short Track on the Planet’ just two days before the stars of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series compete here to wrap up our 2018 race season.

“The City of Newton is, and has been, a tremendous supporter of Iowa Speedway since it was built. We are excited to see our community on a grand stage in an international spotlight.”

RAGBRAI started Sunday in the western town of Onawa, Iowa.
RAGBRAI started Sunday in the western town of Onawa, Iowa. The ride then moves through central Iowa, stopping in Ames on Tuesday and proceeding east to Newton. RAGBRAI is a non-competitive bicycle ride organized by The Des Moines Register and goes from west to east across the state of Iowa. Started in 1973, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest tour of its kind in the world.

The overnight stop for RAGBRAI will come at the same time teams, drivers and Iowa Speedway make final preparations for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Casey’s General Store 150 and NASCAR Xfinity Series U.S. Cellular 250 presented by The Rasmussen Group July 27-28.

The stars of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series will close out the race season in Iowa this weekend. Tickets to the final NASCAR race weekend of 2018 at Iowa Speedway are still available. For tickets, call 1.866.787.8946. To learn more, visit www.IowaSpeedway.com.

K&N Pro Series East at New Jersey Motorsports Park

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series, which includes the East and the West, is the top step in NASCAR’s developmental ladder before driver’s progress to the three national series.

Since 2007, NASCAR K&N Pro Series veterans have made a significant impact at the national level, including 2011 Daytona 500 champion Trevor Bayne, 2015 Daytona 500 champion Joey Logano, and 2014 NASCAR XFINITY Series champion Chase Elliott, along with Ryan Blaney, Austin and Ty Dillon, Kyle Larson, Ryan Truex, Darrell Wallace Jr., and others.

The series introduces NASCAR fans to the next generation of stars, and the diverse mix of short tracks, road courses, and national series speedways appeals to a broad range of motorsports fans. With identical series racing throughout the country, the K&N Pro Series provides a cost-effective opportunity for young drivers to gain valuable experience and exposure to highly competitive racing.

Road-course racing is always the wild card in the championship picture for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. After a full round of racing around Tennessee and Virginia — five races at four tracks — the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East heads north for the twists and turns of road-course racing today. New Jersey Motorsports Park will host the series for the third consecutive season.

The field includes its regular collection of road-course experts, led by Will Rodgers and Ernie Francis Jr. Rodgers swept the K&N Pro East races on road courses last year, including New Jersey, and finished runner-up to Kevin Harvick in the K&N Pro West race at California’s Sonoma Raceway. Francis is making his series’ debut. The 20-year-old NASCAR Drive for Development driver is a four-time Trans-Am champion.

The JUSTDRIVE.com 125 will be 55 laps (126.5 miles) to be run in two (2) segments. The five (5) minute break will occur at or near the conclusion of Laps 28. At the conclusion of the break, lead lap vehicles that elected to pit will line up – in the order they were running at the beginning of the break — behind the lead lap vehicles that elected not to pit in order of running.

Saturday at Langley Speedway in the Visit Hampton VA 150. (Logan Whitton, NKP)

Tyler Dippel started competing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series in 2016, following a stint in Super Late Models across the East Coast. Before racing on asphalt in a stock car for the first time in 2014, Dippel competed in the DIRTCar Racing Series, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors.

More recently, earlier this month, DGR-Crosley announced that 18-year-old Tyler Dippel had joined the team to compete in the remainder of the 2018 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East (NKNPSE) events. Dippel was set to pilot the No. 54 TyCar Trenchless Technologies / D&A Concrete Toyota Camry starting this weekend at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va.

"Tyler comes to us with a lot of experience in the K&N Series," said David Gilliland, President of DGR-Crosley. "We've competed against him on a regular basis over the past two years. I've had the opportunity to watch him grow as a driver, and he's shown how much potential he has behind the wheel. He has the talent and speed that we need - I'm excited to see what we can do together this season."

"Tyler comes to us with a lot of experience in the K&N Series," said David Gilliland, President of DGR-Crosley.
That move proved most advantageous. Dippel and the No. 54 TyCar Trenchless Technologies / D&A Concrete Toyota hit the track for the first time at Langley Speedway on Friday, April 27 for a test day.

On Saturday, the Wallkill, New York native completed the weekend sweep, winning his second career NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race on Saturday night at Langley Speedway after being quickest in both forty-five minute practice sessions and starting on the pole for the Visit Hampton VA 150.

After finishing ninth at New Smyrna and sixth at Bristol earlier this season, Dippel was relieved to finally earn the victory this season.

“What a weekend. I can’t thank all my guys enough, all the people that stick behind me,” said Dippel. “My mom and dad, D&A Concrete, just everyone. It feels so good to be back here. I can’t thank the DGR guys enough. I think we’re just getting started here at DGR. I can’t wait for the rest of the year.”

Tyler Dippel holds off Anthony Alfredo and Tyler Ankrum in the closing laps.

Tyler Dippel is now second in points; a mere two points behind teammate Tyler Ankrum.

On Friday afternoon, that trend continued. The Huntersville, North Carolina native paced the field with a lap of 122.787 mph (15.627 seconds) around the World’s Fastest Half-Mile in the one and only practice session for Saturday’s Zombie Auto 150.

In two previous K&N Pro East starts at Bristol, Burton started on the pole both times (2016 and 2017). His engine expired in the 2016 event, ending his afternoon prematurely. He won the rain-shortened race last year.

In the season-opening race at New Smyrna, Burton started first and finished third.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular Noah Gragson was second fastest with a lap of 15.652 (122.591). In 2016, the Las Vegas, Nevada native started 14th and finished 12th in his only other K&N East start at Thunder Valley.

Tyler Dippel (15.664), Anthony Alfredo (15.668) and Brandon McReynolds (15.676) rounded out the top five when the 60-minute practice session concluded.

Two-time and reigning K&N Pro West champion Todd Gilliland, Cole Rouse, Spencer Davis, Tyler Ankrum and Derek Kraus completed the top 10.

The K&N Pro East will hit the track for group qualifying later on Friday at 6 p.m. ET, with the green flag for the Zombie Auto 150 scheduled to fly at 4 p.m. Saturday.
