NASCAR legends Tony Stewart, Darrell Waltrip and Bill Elliott, current NASCAR superstar Ryan Newman, WWE wrestling champion Bill Goldberg, Kelley Earnhardt, sister of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-owner of JR Motorsport, former MillerCoors Chairman Pete Coors, and Bass Pro Shops Founder Johnny Morris are among the high-profile athletes, celebrities, business titans and philanthropists who are spending part of their regular day in a wheelchair as part of the Darrell Gwynn Wheelchair Challenge. The challenge, benefitting the Darrell Gwynn Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, is the brainchild of Darrell Gwynn, the legendary drag racing champion who was paralyzed in a practice run 30 years ago, as a way to commemorate the 30th anniversary of both his accident and the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month in September.

The Wheelchair Challenge asks participants to sit in the “Hot Seat” and experience a day in the life of someone who is wheelchair bound. Each of the first group of nearly two dozen participants has agreed to donate a minimum of $10,000 to the cause, which is an initiative of the Darrell Gwynn Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund, and then challenge family members, friends, colleagues, and business associates to do the same.

All participants will document their experiences on video with the hashtags #DGWheelchairChallenge #StandUpForThoseWhoCant #TheMiamiProject #SCIAwarenessMonth #ADA30, as well as tag the organization hosting the challenge:

“The Wheelchair Challenge is a unique way to honor the 30th Anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act and National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, while raising funds to help find a cure for paralysis,” said Darrell Gwynn. “When some of my close friends asked me how to also commemorate the 30th anniversary of my accident, I said to them, “how about sitting in the hot seat...how about spending some time in a wheelchair so that you might get a glimpse of what those of us in wheelchairs deal with day to day, while also providing support so that someday others with spinal cord injuries will be able to get out of their chairs and walk again.

Everyone I asked immediately said, Yes!”

Added Marc Buoniconti, president of the Buoniconti Fund who was, himself, paralyzed in a college football game 35 years ago, “The idea is to convey how it feels to lose, temporarily, a key function nearly everyone takes for granted – mobility and get the public at large to understand the challenges we face on a daily basis. This has been my reality for 35 years and Darrell’s for more than 30 years, and millions of others around the world live it daily. It is our hope that this effort will get people to understand a little bit more about the challenges millions face each day.”

Considered one of the 50 greatest racers of all-time, Darrell Gwynn was a world champion drag racer in the 1980s before his devastating practice run accident resulted in his paralysis. Ironically, Darrell was an early Miami Project supporter, even before his paralyzing injury. He proudly displayed the Miami Project logo on his car and donated a portion of his winnings after each race. In 2015, he formally joined the team and began to focus all his efforts into his role as the Director of the Darrell Gwynn Quality of Life Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund.

The Buoniconti Fund is the fundraising arm of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Based in the Lois Pope LIFE Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the fund was created by the now late Hall of Fame football player Nick Buoniconti after Marc’s accident to raise funds to find a cure and to provide cutting-edge treatments for spinal cord injuries.

After a disappointing run on Saturday, Chase Briscoe called his shot, saying he would win Sunday’s NASCAR Xfinity race at Dover. Starting from the rear in a back-up car, due to a spin out on Saturday’s race, Briscoe patiently advanced through the field. Briscoe took over the lead on lap 71 and led 19 laps to win Stage 2.

We were able to finish sixth in the first stage from the back and I knew if we could get clean air I was going to be in really good shape I am super happy to get HighPoint.com back in victory lane. It feels like it has been forever, but it has only been a month and a half. Hopefully, we can carry the momentum into the playoffs.”

The NASCAR Driver on Race, Trump Tweets, and the Noose

GQ is an international monthly men's magazine based in New York City which was founded in 1931. The publication focuses on fashion, style, and culture for men, though articles on food, movies, fitness, sex, music, travel, sports, technology, and books are also featured.

The September issues features NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace. In the profile, Wallace talks to Donavan X. Ramsey about his turbulent summer including the noose and the tweets from the President.

Shortly after Wallace made headlines for his BLM race, a noose was found in his garage at the racetrack. He remembers NASCAR president Steve Phelps had tears in his eyes and could barely form sentences:

Bubba Wallace's GQ Profile (#NASCAR)
“I’m like, ‘What the hell’s going on?’” says Wallace. “He was like, ‘Man...the way it was worded to me, a hate crime was committed.’ I immediately thought of my family, because I’m fine. I’m like, ‘Oh, okay.’ He said there was a noose found in my garage.’”

In the end, after an FBI investigation, no foul play was found. “Was it directed towards me? No. But was it a noose? People don’t want to listen to that second part.” The whole thing was called a hoax by many, including the President of the United States

“There are so many other things we could be worrying about in this world or in this country, but he wanted to take the time to send out his regards. And so be it,” Wallace says diplomatically. “I was just like, ‘You know what? I’m not even going to waste my time with this. Move on from it.’

Austin Cindric NASCAR Xfinity Win Report

Team Penske #NASCAR Xfinity Series Race Report -Daytona Road Course

August 15th, 2020 / Daytona Road Course

Austin Cindric #Wins / #22 MoneyLion Ford Mustang #NASCAR

Track:    Daytona International Speedway Road Course
Race:     UNOH 188
Date:     August 15, 2020

No. 22 MoneyLion Ford Mustang – Austin Cindric
Start:  1st
Stage 1: 1st (Eighth stage win of 2020)
Stage 2: 2nd
Finish: 1st (Seventh career NXS victory)

Laps Completed: 52/52
Laps Led: 21
Point Standings (ahead of second): 1st (+48)

Notes:

  • Austin Cindric and the No. 22 MoneyLion Ford Mustang team were victorious in the inaugural race at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course Saturday, winning the UNOH 188. The Mooresville, N.C. native led a total of 21 laps, en route to his fifth victory in the last six races of the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) season, tying the record of Sam Ard. Cindric won for the fourth time on a road course and has finished second or better in the last six races. He leads the NXS driver standings by 48 markers ahead of second place Chase Briscoe.
  • Cindric started the weather-delayed event from the first position after the field was per the new lineup formula which uses three performance metrics of the finishing position from the previous race (weighted 50%), the ranking in team owner points standings (35%), and the fastest lap from the previous race (15%) to determine lineup and pit selection order.
  • During pace laps, NASCAR decided the track was damp, allowing teams to pit and choose between slick and rain tires. Cindric started the 52-lap race on slicks once the green flag dropped. He took turn-1 wide, losing the first position but quickly regained the lead from Noah Gragson. He extended his lead before the first caution was displayed with three-laps remaining in the first stage. Cindric remained on track during the caution while most of the field came to pit road. Stage 1 restarted with a one-lap sprint and Cindric capturing his eighth stage win of the 2020 season.
  • Crew chief Brian Wilson made the call to pit during the stage caution for tires, fuel and adjustments. Cindric restarted 17th after a mixture of pit strategy shuffled the running order. Cindric raced his way to the 12th position before the caution waved for the third time on lap 17. With a series of cautions throughout the 15-lap stage, Cindric was able to battle his way to the second position at the conclusion of Stage 2. During the caution, Cindric came to pit road for fuel and tires and restarted the final stage in fourth.
  • Cindric quickly regained the runner-up position to race leader Chase Briscoe, where he ran until the caution was displayed on lap 42. The driver of the No. 22 MoneyLion Ford came to pit road for four fresh tires and fuel and would hold his position leaving pit road. With three cars remaining on track, Cindric would restart fifth with seven laps remaining. As the field entered turn 1, chaos struck as most of the field missed the turn and the caution was displayed once more with Cindric lining up second. He reclaimed the race lead with five laps remaining and never looked back to capture his seventh career NXS victory.
  • The NASCAR Xfinity Series is back in action with the Dover International Speedway double header. The first race will take place on Saturday, August 22 at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, MRN and Sirius XM NASCAR Radio followed by race two on Sunday, August 23 at 1:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN, MRN and Sirius XM NASCAR Radio.

Quote: "I'm not sure anyone was really happy with their race car.  Unfortunately, I have a tough perspective of driving really fast high-grip race cars at this track, but great credit to my team -- the MoneyLion guys -- and everyone that puts this together -- Ford Performance, Roush Yates Engines, obviously everyone at Team Penske for working hard.  That's five wins on the year and back-to-back now.  I'm really proud of that.  I didn't feel like I drove my best today, but we executed there at the end where it counts and that's what makes these races so difficult to win."

Keeping track of the Playoff bubble

The Xfinity Series is back on a road course this weekend to make history along with the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.

Keeping track of the Xfinity Playoff bubble. #NASCAR

With Austin Cindric taking home his fourth win of the season last weekend at Road America, six drivers remain locked into the Playoffs with a win. Spots seven through 12 are still up for grabs.

Although, Brandon Brown, who is holding onto the final Playoff spot right now extended his lead further over the weekend, road courses can shake up everything especially when no one has ever run a race on it.

Ross Chastain is still holding onto the seventh spot in the driver Playoff standings as the first driver without a win. Justin Allgaier is right behind Chastain in eighth and Michael Annett is in ninth. Ryan Sieg jumped up one spot to 10th while Riley Herbst, a Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender, is hanging on to the 11th spot.

NASCAR and Daytona International Speedway announced a new twist to the storied, high-banked tri-oval/infield road course with the addition of a chicane at the exit of the NASCAR turn four that will provide competitors with yet another passing zone. The new chicane now creates a 14-turn, 3.61-mile layout (from the 3.56-mile/12 turn) on the storied DAYTONA Road Course, which, for the first time in history, will play host to NASCAR’s three top national series, along with the ARCA Menards Series

The General Tire 100 at the DAYTONA Road Course (5 p.m., MAVTV / TrackPass / MRN) will be the 12th race of the ARCA Menards Series. Road course races tend to bring out new faces to the series, and the ARCA Menards Series is no different.

Canadian Andrew Ranger, a three-time NASCAR Pinty’s Series champion, is the only driver to win more than one ARCA Menards road course race. He dropped in and swept the events at New Jersey Motorsports Park from 2011-14. Ranger won four of his five road-course starts in the series including his 2011 debut at New Jersey.

Parker Chase hopes to follow in Ranger’s ‘Tire Tracks.’ Chad Bryant Racing announced Parker, 19, will pilot the team’s No. 22 VerticalBridge/Enertech Resources Ford. The Texas native, who has driven several late model events for the team as a development diver, is coming off his first IMSA podium in the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series at Wisconsin’s Road America. Chase also competed on Kyle Busch’s team in the 2020 Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona in IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in the GTD Series.

ARCA’s first road course race was October 19, 1958 at Meadowdale International Raceway outside of Chicago, Illinois. Fred Lorenzen was the winner. Meadowdale held two more races, in 1960 and 1964, won by Nelson Stacy and Elmer Musgrave, respectively.

Other winners include:
  • Ken Schrader (Heartland Park),
  • Darrell Waltrip (Heartland Park)
  • Jack Bowsher (Mid-Ohio)
  • Justin Allgaier (New Jersey)
  • Patrick Long (New Jersey)
  • Casey Roderick (New Jersey)
  • Kyle Weatherman (New Jersey)
  • Parker Kligerman (New Jersey)
  • Justin Marks (Palm Beach International)
  • Chris Buescher (Road America)
  • AustinTheriault (Road America)
  • Bob Schacht (St. Louis International)
  • Scott Lagasse (Streets of Des Moines)
  • Curtis Turner (Virginia International Raceway)
  • John Finger (Watkins Glen).

Justin Marks won the only ARCA Menards Series road course race in the rain, in 2010 at Palm Beach.

Michael Self’s Daytona Road Course Preview (#ARCA)

A Look Back: Self brought home a third place finish at Michigan Speedway, matching his best finish since the ARCA Menards Series has returned to action after a brief pause due to COVID-19 after the second race of the season. Self and the No. 25 Sinclair Oil Toyota crew have fought handling issues since the return to action, but the podium finish felt like a step in the right direction for the team. Self left Michigan leading the championship standings by just four points.

A Look Ahead: The series will now head to its first road course event since 2017. The original 2020 schedule had two road course races planned at Mid Ohio Sports Car Course and Watkins Glen, but both were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Daytona race replaces Watkins Glen, and will be the first time the series has run on the historic 3.61-mile track. Self, who coaches road racing on a regular basis, will be making his first road course start in the ARCA Menards Series.

Self on the Daytona Road Course:

“Just the thought of finally going to a road course has me as excited as I have been for any race this year. I’ve been wanting to run an ARCA car on a road course for so long, but things just haven’t worked out to make it happen. This year, I was ecstatic to see two great road courses on the original schedule, then a bit heartbroken when they were both cancelled. I’m really glad we were able to replace at least one of them with another road race. The Daytona road course is a historic track. I’ve gone to the Trans Am race each year for the last couple as a coach for the Mike Cope Racing team, so I’m very familiar with the track, and really excited to be driving it this weekend.”

About Michael Self: A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, Self is an accomplished road racer, four-time Utah State Karting champion, eight-time NASCAR K&N Pro Series winner, and eight-time ARCA Menards Series winner. Self has made seven starts in NASCAR XFINITY Series competition, driving for JD Motorsports. He scored a career-best 11th-place finish at Wisconsin’s Road America in 2015. In 2016, he helped guide Justin Haley to the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship from the spotter’s stand and as a driver’s coach.

Self returned to consistent competition in 2017 and finished fourth in the NKNPSW championship standings with two wins, seven top-fives, and 13 top-10’s in 13 starts, as well as one win, and four top-fives in six ARCA Racing Series starts. Self captured his second career ARCA Racing Series victory in the 2018 season opener at Daytona International Speedway. In 2019 Self competed full-time in the ARCA Menards series finishing second in the championship standings with four wins, 14 top-fives, and 15 top-tens in 20 starts. This year, you can catch Self behind the wheel of the No. 25 Venturini Motorsports Sinclair Oil Toyota Camry in every ARCA Racing Series event.
