Sonoma Raceway Security Guard Charged with Assaulting Wheelchair-Using Racer during NASCAR Event

Sonoma Raceway Security Guard Charged with Assaulting Wheelchair-Using Racer during #NASCAR Even

On August 24, 2024, Chase Johnson faced a life-altering moment during the Gold Cup with High Limit Series at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA. On this particular night, Chase was battling forward through the field when everything changed in an instant and his car crashed. The safety team quickly removed him from the car and he was transported to Chico Hospital where he was eventually life-flighted to UC Davis Medical Center.

Hours later, Chase underwent a 9-hour surgery to address severe spinal injuries. His doctors repaired and removed bone in his cervical and thoracic spine, including fractures at C5, C6, C7, and a small C1 fracture. His spinal cord was compressed and bruised heavily in this area and is the priority. They also discovered fractures in his T10 and T11 vertebrae, but these did not require surgery.

Unfortunately last weekend, Chase was injured again in a confrontation while leaving the Sonoma Race Track.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Johnson and his partner were exiting through an access point with valid passes when Security Guard Rosiles blocked them.

“The guard pushed the victim, causing his wheelchair to tip over, resulting in the victim losing consciousness and sustaining injuries,” the Sheriff’s Office reported.

In the Facebook post, Johnson’s wife, Hayley Johnson, said the two were leaving and attempting to reach a handicap parking area when Rosiles allowed other people through but refused them access. When they asked to speak to a supervisor, she wrote, he declined — then first told them to leave, and moments later demanded they stay.

Rosiles then shoved Johnson, she wrote, flipping the wheelchair backward. Johnson struck his head on the pavement and lost consciousness for roughly 15 seconds.

Chase was treated at the track’s medical center before being transported to a hospital, where he remained overnight.

Alexander Rosiles, the Sonoma Raceway security guard from Stockton, CA was arrested around 3 p.m. following a confrontation with the victim and his partner, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Rosiles, charged with assault and battery, appeared briefly in Sonoma County Superior Court on Tuesday, where a judge set his plea for Aug. 12.

It was last reported that, Rosiles, age 27 remains in custody on $35,000 bail. Prosecutors also allege he violated the terms of a previous assault conviction from March 2019 in San Joaquin County.

Shane van Gisbergen Dominates, Lands Back-to-Back Wins

Shane van Gisbergen Dominates at Sonoma, Lands Back-to-Back Wins

Shane van Gisbergen powered to his third victory of the NASCAR Cup Series season, surviving a flurry of late caution periods and turning in another dominant road-course performance Sunday afternoon at Sonoma Raceway

Van Gisbergen’s No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet led 97 of the 110 laps in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 and secured a 1.128-second margin of victory at the checkered flag. His first win at the 1.99-mile California circuit was the fourth of his Cup Series career.

Van Gisbergen has now won three of the last five Cup Series races, including back-to-back victories after last weekend’s triumph in the Chicago Street Race. Sunday’s win ties him for the series lead this season with fellow three-time winners Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell.

“Awesome job, boys,” the No. 88 crew told SVG on the team radio after the checkers. “Awesome job. What a run we’re on.”

“We had an amazing car,” van Gisbergen said. “Chase Briscoe, what a great racer and gave me respect. Jumped the last (restart) a little bit, and it was pretty tense, but amazing. So stoked for Red Bull, Trackhouse, Chevy. I believe we had a really fun weekend here, some great races, and I hope everyone enjoyed that.”

Connor Zilisch Holds Off van Gisbergen for Epic Xfinity Win

Connor Zilisch Holds Off van Gisbergen for Epic Xfinity Win

In closing laps of the Pit Boss/FoodMaxx 250 at Sonoma Raceway, the pupil schooled the master.

Taking shot after shot from JR Motorsports teammate Shane van Gisbergen over the final two laps, Connor Zilisch held off the more experienced driver to claim his third NASCAR Xfinity Series victory of the season and the fourth of his career.

In what was a two-driver show from start to finish, Zilisch and van Gisbergen, the pole winner, combined to lead 70 of the 79 laps, surrendering the top spot only when they short-pitted the first and second stages to recover track position at the stage breaks.

“First, hats off to Shane,” Zilisch said after climbing from his car. “That was awesome. All race long, I felt like we were racing each other with respect. I wheel-hopped a little bit in Turn 7 one time and got into him. Otherwise, it was awesome to get to race against him finally and battle with him the whole race long.”

“It’s always the hardest trying to save fuel while someone’s breathing down your neck,” Zilisch said. “There was a chance that he could have gotten by me when he hit me, but he let me have it and raced me clean. I respect the hell out of him for that, and I’m looking forward to racing against him more.

“We’re going to race each other at Watkins Glen, and that’s one of my favorite tracks, so I hope I can beat him again there.”

William Sawalich Wins a Wine Country Thriller at Sonoma Raceway

William Sawalich Wins a Wine Country Thriller at Sonoma Raceway

For most of Friday’s General Tire 200 at Sonoma Raceway, William Sawalich re-established the dominant form he enjoyed during his time on the ARCA Menards Series platform.

A one-lap shootout forced Sawalich to dig in and fight for a trip to Victory Lane at the 1.990-mile road course. After Alon Day moved him off track in Turn 1, Sawalich regrouped and gave chase as Day battled Christian Eckes for the race lead.

The pursuit lasted until the final corner, when Day attempted to pass Eckes on the outside while Sawalich drove underneath both. Eckes refused to surrender the top spot to Sawalich, with the two exchanging contact multiple times as they hustled towards the checkered flag.

Sawalich prevailed over Eckes by only .066 seconds, earning the hardest wire-to-wire victory of his career.

“That was definitely our race, but it sucks it had to happen that way,” Sawalich said. “We did what we could to get our Starkey Camry in Victory Lane, so I’m glad that we’re here. It took me a while to figure out how to do a burnout. “

For many decades, Sonoma Raceway has been a significant race for ARCA Menards Series West competitors every time the venue appears on the calendar.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, West Series drivers competed in a combination event with the NASCAR Cup Series at Sonoma once a year. Although the West Series now only has as a support event for the Cup Series weekend, the opportunity still exists for regulars to prove themselves against the upcoming generation of stars.

Seven of the last 10 West Series events at Sonoma have been won by a driver who has competed full-time in either the Cup Series or NASCAR Xfinity Series. The list of Sonoma West Series winners comprises names like Kevin Harvick, Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Chase Briscoe and Sam Mayer, who emerged victorious in last year’s race.

As has become tradition with the West Series event at Sonoma, Friday is set to be a battle between the championship contenders and drivers seeking to gain experience. With the top five in the standings only separated by 18 points, a strong run at Sonoma is crucial toward sustaining momentum in the West Series title hunt.

What to Expect at California's Premier Motorsports Event of the Year

What to Expect at California's Premier Motorsports Event of the Year

  • Sonoma Raceway is NASCAR's only stop in California this year, hosting the highly anticipated event from July 11-13.
  • The challenging Sonoma track requires drivers to exhibit strategy and technique, featuring elevation changes and narrow racing lines.
  • The Toyota/Save Mart 350 race showcases the unique combination of Wine Country's beauty and high-speed motorsport thrill.

This year—for the first time—Sonoma Raceway is NASCAR's only stop in California, which means that when the haulers pull into our garages after their longest journey of the season, we'll be ready to host the best weekend on the calendar. The July 11-13 NASCAR weekend is just around the corner, so whether you're a die-hard fan or coming for the first time, here's what you should expect at California's premier motorsports event of the year.

While the main event is racing, NASCAR weekend at Sonoma is about more than just who takes home the win; it's about creating lifelong memories and fostering a sense of community. Campers roll in Thursday morning, ready to turn NASCAR into a weekend-long party with friends and family. To them, fireside dinners and high-speed racing are all you need. An extra bonus is that they get to welcome the Cup Series haulers when they roll in Friday morning for the Hauler Parade.

Campers don't get to have all the fun, though. Race weekend will be packed with fun for the whole family. Whether you want to let the kids roam free in the Kids Zone (join the Kids Club here), compete with your friends to see who has the better axe throw, or get some merch signed by your favorite driver, there's something for everyone in our Fan Zone. For fans who can't get enough of the racing, our Historic Trans Am Series will bring a remarkable collection of restored race cars from the golden era of American road racing. These cars will race on the track both Friday and Saturday and will be on display on Sunday.

Sonoma will also be hosting various events throughout the weekend. Our Farm to Finish Line event, happening on Saturday at 10 a.m., will celebrate California's agriculture as local farmers and ranchers showcase interactive displays throughout the day. Fans can sample fresh, local products and get merch signed during the Xfinity Series Drivers Autograph Session. Our generous sponsor, THOR, will be hosting our annual Camper Appreciation Party on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. in the Speedway Experience. There will be live music, activities, and guest appearances like Kyle Busch. Fans can enjoy complimentary beer and Coca-Cola while supplies last.

On Sunday, our Trackside Live show will give fans all the pre-race fun they could ever ask for. From driver interviews to fan engagement, this is the perfect way to kick off Sunday's race. The pre-race fun doesn't stop there; the Patriots Jet Team will put on an epic air show to showcase their skills. No matter where you are on the property, fans will be able to soak in the electrifying demonstration. Following the air show, the NASCAR Cup Series drivers will be doing their driver introductions on the pre-race stage as they gear up to battle it out on the track.

Once the green flag flies on Sunday, that's when everything starts to come together. The Cup Series drivers go head-to-head on one of the most challenging tracks on the calendar. Unlike traditional oval tracks, road courses challenge drivers with elevation changes, left AND right turns, and narrow racing lines. To come out on top, drivers will need to test their strategy, finesse, and technique.

As NASCAR's only stop in California, there is no better place to host this year's Toyota/Save Mart 350. With Sonoma Raceway nestled in the Sonoma Mountains, racing fans can experience a true Californian oasis where Wine Country meets high-speed racing.

Do your best to find shaded areas, especially if you’re bringing a soft sided cooler (no bigger than 14x14x14) and feel free to set up your own picnic on the hills as you soak in the view.

Wanting to go the extra mile with your gear and enhance your race experience? Sonoma Raceway also offers Racing Electronic Scanners that allow fans to tune directly into a driver’s in-car audio. Listen to your favorite team or driver communicate with each other throughout the race!

Driver appearances are also something you don’t want to miss. Keep an eye on Sonoma’s appearances schedule  to see if you can find your favorite driver!

Stick Around for Post-Race Action

The fun doesn’t end when the race ends! Stick around for the post-race festivities and watch as the winner celebrates in Victory Lane. If you’re lucky enough, you might even get an autograph from the winner!

Didn’t get the see the Hauler Parade? Watch them leave the track as they begin their longest journey of the season. Help us send them off on a good note as they drive coast to coast from Sonoma to Dover.

Nine-Year-Old Singer of the Xfinity Series 'National Anthem'

Who is Isis Mikayle Castillo?

Over the last twenty years, NASCAR Race Mom (NRM) has been to a plethora of races and consequently listened to a gaggle of National Anthems. Last night’s performance by nine-year-old Isis Mikayle Castillo at the start of NASCAR Xfinity Series Event at Sonoma Raceway was by far the most enjoyable.

After scouring the internet, little was found regarding this young rising star. She is an inspiring singer, dancer and actor from the Bay Area in California.

Isis is a very active individual who you can follow her on her Instagram, Twitter and YouTube channels.

Well done young lady - NRM is sure we will hear much more about Ms. Isis in the near future.

#NASCAR Cup Regular Ryan Preece Dominates

NASCAR Cup Series regular Ryan Preece took full advantage of the opportunity to gain experience at Sonoma Raceway in preparation for Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 by starting from the pole and then dominating Friday’s ARCA Menards Series West General Tire 200.

Preece and the No. 9 Stewart-Haas Ford was the class of the field on the 10-turn, 1.99-mile road course, crossing the finish line 9.675 seconds ahead of NASCAR Xfinity Series regular Sammy Smith. Fellow NXS competitor Riley Herbst was third, while ARCA Menards Series West regulars Jack Wood and William Sawalich finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

“Laps mean a lot, especially now in today’s world of racing,” said Preece. “You don’t get much practice, so any opportunity you can to get in the seat, you take.”

“I feel like, as a Cup driver, you’re expected to win, right? Even though I don’t have a lot of road course experience, I felt like I had to win today.”

NASCAR Cup Regular Ryan Preece Dominates

“Road racing is a totally different art. AJ Allmendinger comes to mind: when you look at him as someone who really set the bar and how much he can get out of a road race car. Today I had a really good race car. I was able to just work on me to find little things and I feel that was extremely beneficial for tomorrow and Sunday.”
