Garcia and Mayer Win Poles for Today’s Doubleheader Races

Garcia and Mayer Win Poles for Today’s Doubleheader Races

Truck Series Race at 1:30 p.m. / O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Race at 5 p.m.,

Day one of NASCAR weekend at EchoPark Speedway wrapped up with Sam Mayer and Georgia native Jake Garcia scoring pole positions.

They will lead their respective fields to green during Saturday’s doubleheader, which includes the Fr8 Racing 208 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race (1:30 p.m., FS1 and PRN Radio) and the Bennett Transportation and Logistics 250 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race (5 p.m., The CW and PRN Radio).

Sam Mayer #Wins #NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Pole

Mayer set the pace in both rounds of O’Reilly Auto Parts Series qualifying and ultimately claimed the top spot with a speed of 174.318 mph in his No. 41 Haas Factory Team Chevy.

He outran Carson Kvapil for the pole. Kvapil will start second in his No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevy after turning a lap at 173.875 mph.

In this race last year, Mayer was swept up in a crash, relegating him to a 36th-place finish. He experienced the same fate in last week’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series season opener and looks to rebound this weekend at EchoPark Speedway in the Bennett 250.

“I feel like it’s going to be very good,” Sam Mayer said after winning the pole. “It’s my first speedway pole—it feels really good, very rewarding, everyone at Haas Factory Team did a great job. The pushes are a lot different with this [Chevy] nose, and it’s something I had to relearn last week at Daytona and it’s going to be even bigger here.”

Jake Garcia #Wins #NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Pole

Jake Garcia, a native of Monroe, Ga., is running his fourth season in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, and earned his fourth career pole in his 77th career start.

The driver of the ThorSport Racing No. 98 Ford F-150 powered to a 172.980 mph lap in the second round of qualifying to claim the top spot.

“It’s huge to start up front here in Atlanta. If you can control a lane, you put yourself in a good position to get stage points,” Garcia said after winning the pole. “It’s really special to start on the pole here. It’s a home track for me. I’m excited to lead the field to green in front of this Georgia crowd.”

Garcia’s teammate Ben Rhodes will start second in his No. 99 Ford F-150, completing the front row with a speed of 172.726 mph. Kyle Busch, defending winner of this race making his first Truck Series start of the season in the No. 7 Chevrolet, will roll off third with a lap of 172.662 mph.

William Byron Stretches Fuel for Iowa Cup Series Win

William Byron Stretches Fuel for Iowa Cup Series Win

An extraordinary spate of cautions in Sunday’s Iowa Corn 350 Powered by Ethanol allowed William Byron to save an extraordinary amount of fuel, and that proved the difference in Byron’s second victory of the season and first since the Daytona 500.

With his first victory at the 0.875-mile short track and the 15th of his career, Byron regained the series lead by 18 points over teammate Chase Elliott, who finished 14th after pitting for fuel on Lap 283 of 350.

What enabled Byron to stretch his fuel to 144 laps was a series of seven quick cautions within 65 laps of the start of the final stage. All told, 12 cautions slowed the race for 72 laps.

“Man, how about that for some fuel mileage?” Byron asked rhetorically after climbing from his car. “We’ve had our fair share of things not go our way with fuel mileage, and just super thankful for (crew chief) Rudy (Fugle), all these guys, all the engineers, all the engineers back at the shop.

“Just this whole race team, we’ve been through a lot this year. It’s been a lot of growing pains. It’s been tough on us. But it feels really good today to get a win.”

Chase Briscoe finished second; Brad Keselowski placed third; Ryan Blaney came in fourth and Ryan Preece completed the top five.

Sam Mayer Charges to 1st Xfinity Win of 2025

Sam Mayer took control of Saturday’s Hy-Vee Perks 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway after a Lap 221 restart and maintained it the rest of the way to record the first victory for the Haas Factory team and the first in the series for Ford this season.

Mayer won at Iowa for the second straight year, having triumphed in a JR Motorsports Chevrolet last season.

“This one’s everything right here,” Mayer said of his eighth career win. “First win for Haas Factory Team — that’s awesome. This car was fast all day long. I tried to botch it on pit road, but we didn’t.

“I can’t believe it. This is one of the most special wins I have. These guys (Mayer’s team), they love me to death, I love them to death, and we’re just some good ol’ boys trying to go racing.”

Jesse Love finished second; Ross Chastain placed third; Connor Zilisch came in fourth and Harrison Burton completed the top five.

Points-Leading ‘Butterbean’ Queen Races to 5th ARCA Victory of Year

The distance between Brenden Queen and Brent Crews in Friday night’s ARCA Menards Series Atlas 150 was .412 seconds.

The time between Crews and third-place finisher Lawless Alan was much more than that.

Queen and Crews dominated the latest ARCA race at Iowa Speedway and the man they call “Butterbean” held off a late charge from Crews to win his fifth race of the season.

“You have to be in it to win it, and all it takes is a lap car and you are back in it or out of it,” Queen said. “The older I get I just learn to not panic.”

“I thought the lap cars were going to get me again,” Queen said. “We’ve raced against each other hard, and we know how hard we can push each other. He’s super talented and we’re pushing each other to be better.

“With six to go, we went for the same spot and drove the wheels off it.”

Brent Crews finished second; Lawless Alan placed third; Isabella Robusto came in fourth and Lavar Scott completed the top five.

#NASCAR Charlotte Roval Race Recap

Winners: Kyle Larson(Cup) & Sam Mayer (Xfinity)

Kyle Larson Dominates at Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval

Kyle Larson Dominates at Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval

Kyle Larson cruised to his second NASCAR Cup victory this season—and his second in an elimination race. Mirroring his rout in the final Round of 16 event at Bristol Motor Speedway, Larson grabbed the lead for the restart of Stage 2 and stayed out front for 62 of the final 82 laps at the 2.28-mile, 17-turn Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval.

The driver of the No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet crossed the finish line 1.511 seconds ahead of Christopher Bell, the only driver who could stay in the same zip code with the race winner. Third-place William Byron was 8.965 seconds behind at the finish.

With his sixth victory of the season, his second at the Roval and the 29th of his career, Larson led two other Hendrick teammates into the final eight — Byron and fifth-place finisher Chase Elliott.

“Really, it’s the first time in my playoff career I’ve not been close to the cut line, so it was good to kind of have a little bit stress-free of a weekend,” said Larson, whose previous win at the Roval came during his 2021 championship season. “I think the first time I’ve been here without crashing, maybe, besides the other time I won.

“It’s known that I don’t really use the sim (simulator) much, and I was in the sim this week. It really helped me get into a rhythm I think early on and helped us kind of fine-tune our car, too.”

Sam Mayer prevails in #NASCAR Overtime

As Sam Mayer celebrated his drama-filled victory in Saturday’s Drive for the Cure 250 Presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, Parker Kligerman watched a replay of the whisker-close circumstance that knocked him out of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs.

In overtime, Mayer passed Kligerman in Turn 7 of the 2.280-mile, 17-turn circuit and pulled away to claim the victory that propelled him into the Playoffs’ Round of 8.

But Mayer’s win was devastation for Kligerman, who has never won an Xfinity Series race. Kligerman was leading, with the white flag waving, when NASCAR called a caution for Leland Honeyman’s spin into the barrier in Turn 3.

Had the caution call come a fraction of a second later, Kligerman would have been the winner under yellow. The overtime, however, gave Mayer another shot in his No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet — arguably the class of the field — and the 21-year-old from Franklin, Wisconsin took full advantage.

“We were all crossed up getting up in there (Turn 7),” Mayer said of the winning pass. “I was loose getting into (Turn) 6, and I knew that was my only shot if I got a good angle into that corner.

“He blocked the bottom, which was good for me in that it gave me a better angle up off the corner and got this Chevrolet hooked up, and we were gone from there. Now, I get to celebrate.”

Christopher Bell holds on for Homestead win, clinches return to Championship 4

In one of the most thrilling NASCAR Cup Series Playoff races of the season, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell rallied from a frustrating race start to lead the final 16 laps of Sunday‘s 4EVER 400 presented by Mobil 1 at Homestead-Miami Speedway to earn a second straight appearance in the Championship 4.

Bell, who only made his first appearance inside the top five with less than 50 laps remaining, got around a pair of the day‘s front-runners in the final laps to blaze to the lead in the No. 20 JGR Toyota and claim that automatic championship admission ticket. It‘s the 28-year-old Oklahoma native‘s second win of the season — sixth of his career — and the first of the season‘s eight playoff races to date.

“I’ve got the best team behind me, honestly I don‘t know (how we did it), that race was a whirlwind,” Bell said. “I was about ready to throw the towel in during that second stage, I got really frustrated. But (crew chief) Adam Stevens kept after it and gave me what I needed. Whenever we got some clean air, this thing was really good.

“I cannot say how proud I am to be here with our partners, driving these Toyota Camrys. Thank you to everyone who supported me. This is better than a dream come true.”

Sam Mayer holds off Herbst, seals Xfinity Series title shot with Homestead victory

Sam Mayer claimed his first career NASCAR Xfinity Series oval-race victory in the second half of a NASCAR doubleheader at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday in the Contender Boats 300 after holding off last week’s race winner Riley Herbst by a mere 0.227 seconds.

It marks the JR Motorsports driver Mayer’s fourth series victory of the season and his career, and most importantly for Mayer – who joked he didn’t breathe the final four laps – it is his ticket into the Championship 4 finale that will decide the series title at Phoenix Raceway in two weeks.

“It’s unreal, we won on an oval,” a grinning Mayer screamed into the front grandstands. “This Chevrolet Camaro was so good. It’s all about putting a full race together, and I’m so proud of these guys. They kicked tail on pit road and we made it happen with these HMS (Hendrick Motorsports) engines. It’s just really cool to be able to beat an amazing organization like that (Herbst’s Stewart-Haas Racing team). We’ve got to turn it on a little harder going into Phoenix.”

Carson Hocevar Converts Homestead Win, Joins Rhodes, Heim, Enfinger in Championship 4 Field

Carson Hocevar secured his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship 4 appearance with a victory Saturday in the Baptist Health Cancer Care 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, earning all four of his career series wins this season — the trophy Saturday most impactful among them.

Hocevar put his No. 42 Niece Motorsports Chevrolet into the lead with 11 laps remaining and held off the hard-charging Zane Smith by 2.705 seconds to claim the win over last year’s series champion, whose runner-up effort was disqualified by NASCAR after a post-race technical inspection found the defending series champion‘s No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford used an unapproved windshield support.

Hocevar celebrated the clutch win by climbing high atop the flag stand to claim the checkered flag in person. He threw it down to the cheering fans behind the fence then climbed back down on the grandstand side to high-five fans and celebrate the biggest win of his life to date.

“It kills me I can’t do a burnout but we have to take this truck to Phoenix,” a grinning Hocevar said. “This truck was so good. We just got behind on pit stops and just lost track position which was unfortunate, but man, it’s so good to feel [like this]. I love it.

“I thought we could win today with our truck, even with all the setbacks from the debris and everything, we had a shot to win and we did just that.”

Kaden Honeycutt Does it Again, Delivers a Dominant West Series Win at Madera Speedway

Saturday night’s ARCA Menards Series race at California’s Madera Speedway was a story of dΓ©jΓ  vu.

Just like he did when he made his West Series debut a few weeks ago at All American Speedway in Roseville, California, Kaden Honeycutt dominated from beginning to end in the 51FIFTY Jr Homecoming ARCA 150 presented by the West Coast Stock Car/Motorsports Hall of Fame.

The 20-year-old from Willow Park, Texas did so after recording the fastest lap in practice and qualifying on the outside pole — exactly what he did at All American.

“This feels so good. These guys work their butts off,” Honeycutt said, referring to his crew. This car was phenomenal. I was so worried about the Speedy Dry [after it was applied during a late-race red flag]. There was so much put down in [Turns] 1 and 2 in my lane and where I wanted to run.”

“But, executed on the restart, got down to the bottom and kicked their freaking butts. That’s what this team’s about.”

  • DATE: Saturday September 23, 2023
  • TV: 3:30 p.m. ET on USA
  • RADIO: 3 p.m. ET on PRN Radio and SiriusXM Ch. 90

Sam Mayer - JR Motorsports
Sam Mayer

Sam Mayer heads west to Texas Motor Speedway for his fourth start at the 1.5-mile track and the second race of the Round of 12 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. The Franklin, Wis. native has scored one top-five and two top-10 efforts at the quad-oval with his best of third coming in the spring of 2022. Mayer's average finish at the Fort Worth facility is 8.0. He currently sits 10th in points, a mere 14 markers out of the cutoff spot with two races remaining. Mayer's Chevrolet will be carrying the blue and black colors of Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions on the No. 1 entry.

Sam Mayer: "Texas is another one of my better tracks and I'm looking forward to having a chance to get our momentum going in the right direction. We have had really fast cars these past few weeks but not a whole lot of luck, so hopefully we can turn that around this weekend in Texas and make some gains."

Justin Allgaier - JR Motorsports
Justin Allgaier

By virtue of last weekend's victory at Bristol Motor Speedway, Justin Allgaier has advanced into the Round of 8 in the NXS Playoffs for the eighth consecutive season. The Illinois native has gone to Victory Lane in two of the last four races (Daytona and Bristol). In 25 NXS starts at Texas, Allgaier has scored five top fives and 13 top 10s. Allgaier has placed fourth or better in three of the last four starts at the 1.5-mile quad-oval, equating to a 3.3 average finish in those three events. His best effort was a runner-up finish in 2021.

Justin Allgaier: "We have been really strong at Texas the past couple of seasons, and I know that we will have that same speed again this weekend. Having already advanced into the next round of the playoffs is a great feeling and it really gives us an opportunity to take some chances that some of the other guys are not able to. Hopefully we will be able to execute the same way we have been and be up front going for the win and those extra playoff points when it counts on Saturday with our Reese's Ice Cream / Sam's Club Chevrolet."

Josh Berry - JR Motorsports
Josh Berry

Josh Berry heads to Texas needing to gain 24 points on the line for advancement with two races yet to run in the Round of 12. In three previous starts on the 1.5-mile quad-oval, Berry's best finish is sixth, coming in this race last season. He has a pair of top-10 results in three starts and has led 46 laps there. On race tracks measuring 1.5 miles in NXS competition, Berry has three of his five victories, six top-five and 13 top-10 finishes and has led a combined 293 laps in 23 total starts. He is a previous winner at Las Vegas (twice) and Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Josh Berry: "We've run well at Texas in the past and there's no reason we can't continue that this weekend. This JARRETT team is working hard to make sure we unload with the speed we are capable of having. With the resin on the track, the line is going to change and we need to be ready for that to happen in order to put ourselves in a situation to score stage points throughout the day. I'm confident that we will be in contention Saturday as long as we put it all together."

Brandon Jones - JR Motorsports
Brandon Jones

Brandon Jones qualified on the pole in this event at Texas last season. The effort marked his seventh of eight career poles in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. At tracks measuring 1-2 miles in length in the NXS, Jones has recorded four wins, 19 top fives and 56 top 10s, while leading the field for a total of 377 laps . Jones has notched a pair of top 10s and an average finish of 7.5 when carrying Pelonis branding on the hood of the Menards Chevrolet in 2023.

Brandon Jones: "We have had a lot of speed as of late and I know this team is making sure that speed carries over to this weekend. I thought we had a car capable of winning last week and this No. 9 bunch has run up front at Texas more than not, so I'm confident that we will be near the front this weekend and hopefully battling for the win."

JRM's No. 9 team is the defending winner of this event. Last year the team qualified second and led 85 laps en route to its second overall victory in the Lonestar State.

William Byron Wins Cup Series Race at Watkins Glen

William Byron added to his season highlight reel, earning his first career NASCAR Cup Series road-course victory with a dominant win in Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen at historic Watkins Glen International.

It marks a career-best fifth victory of the season, tops in the NASCAR Cup Series and the most for him in a single season in a six-year career in NASCAR’s top series. And the 25-year-old Charlotte native had to earn this one — holding off another championship challenger, Denny Hamlin, by a healthy 2.632 seconds for the win. Byron led 66 of the 90 laps — extending his advantage over the field each lap of the final 10-lap run to the checkered flag.

“Yeah, I would have to think about that a little bit, though,” Byron said when asked if he felt like it was his most dominant race win. “But it definitely feels really good, just a huge credit to the race team behind me. I want to thank Max Papis. My first road-course win, and we worked years and years for this.

“Thanks to all the guys on the team. I did a lot of laps on iRacing this week, got a new simulator at home. It’s a great win. It shows when we’re at our best, we can perform like this.”

Sam Mayer outlasts field in OT, wins at Watkins Gle

JR Motorsports driver Sam Mayer survived a full-contact afternoon at Watkins Glen International — contributing his own bump and run on the final restart to take the lead in overtime and hold off the field for his second career NASCAR Xfinity Series win Saturday in the Shriners Children‘s 200 at The Glen.

Mayer‘s No. 1 JRM Chevrolet tagged the back of the day‘s most dominant driver and then-race leader Ty Gibbs, spinning Gibbs‘ No. 19 Toyota, which then collected a handful of other lead pack cars. The 21-year-old Wisconsin native pulled away from the mayhem behind and raced off to a .909-second victory over Richard Childress Racing‘s Sheldon Creed.

“On that first one, I got used up, thought I had a good one there‘‘ Mayer said of the two overtime restarts. “All glory to God for this one because we had to work our tails off for it.

“I wheel-hopped it, that‘s unfortunate, and I feel bad for doing that. Obviously, you don‘t want to take out any car like that,‘‘ Mayer added. “Just trying to get another win in the Xfinity Series. I‘ve got a lot of catching up to do. I was in there, I put my nose in there, and that‘s part of it.

“That‘s an accident, but I think everyone can agree it‘s okay for an Xfinity Series regular to win this race.”

Jesse Love - The ARCA Series ‘General Tire 100 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International’

Jesse Love’s eighth victory in the 2023 ARCA Menards Series season was simultaneously his most unpredictable.

Love only had one lap to pass race leader Connor Zilisch as a light rain began to fall around Watkins Glen International with five laps remaining. As the two reached the final turn, Love nudged Zilisch out of the groove to narrowly steal the win in Friday’s General Tire 100 at the Glen.

“Hats off to Connor Zilisch,” Love said. “I hope he doesn’t think [the bump] was dirty. It was borderline, but I had to do something. He left the door open for me to do something when he got into the rumble strips.

“Brent Crews and Connor Zilisch are two of the best up-and-coming race car drivers in the country right now and they put that on full display today.”

With his victory, Love continues to make ARCA Menards Series history by becoming the 13th driver to win four races in a row. Should he win the next two races, Love will break the all-time record that currently stands at five consecutive victories between Tim Steele, Bruce Gould, Jack Bowsher and Harold Smith.

Sean Hingorani Dominates at Evergreen, Earns 4th West Series Win of 2023

Despite entering the NAPA Auto Parts ARCA 150 at Washington’s Evergreen Speedway second in ARCA Menards Series West points behind rival Landen Lewis, Sean Hingorani had maintained confidence that he’s the favorite for the 2023 championship.

On Saturday night, the Venturini Motorsports driver proved why.

Hingorani at Evergreen picked up his fourth West Series win of the season, and he did so in dominating fashion. The 16-year-old from Newport Beach, California spent the first third of the 150-lap race on the 5/8-mile oval riding the back bumper of pole-sitter Tyler Reif before he made the pass for the lead on Lap 56.

Hingorani never looked back.

A bump-and-run on Love shortly after the final restart of the day was all Crews needed to pull away from the field during the Dutch Boy 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and win in just his second ARCA Menards Series start.

Crews is no stranger to finding Victory Lane on a dirt track but took great pride in earning his first series victory at a historic facility like the Springfield Mile.

“This is the highest-caliber stuff I’ve ever done,” Crews said. “Being able to win [at Springfield] means a lot, but I want to give all glory to God. "I'm speechless. This is awesome," said Davenport, a five-time World 100 winner and three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion. "I was just out there pacing myself, trying to keep the edges on the tires and do dirt-guys stuff.

"Man, this is an awesome experience. Thanks so much to SRX for giving me this opportunity and a chance to come out here and race with some of my heroes, legends and superstars. I'm just an ol' country boy from Georgia that runs dirt cars."

Ryan Newman clinched the series championship before the feature race went green. He entered the night with a 39-point lead and finished 45 in front of the defending champ Andretti and Keselowski who tied for second.

"It means a lot," Newman said of the championship. "Any kind of championship in any series and the Superstar Racing Experience, what can you say? Guys like TOny Stewart. Jonathan Davenport, who's won everything on dirt. Racing against Kenny Schrader, Kenny Wallace, it's just a whole lot of fun. Castroneves, an Indy Car champion and four-time winner. It's very special."
