Appeals Panel Overturns L2-Level Penalty to No. 19 Team

Appeals Panel Overturns L2-Level Penalty to No. 19 Team

The National Motorsports Appeals Panel on Wednesday overturned the L2-level penalty levied against the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 19 team stemming from the season-opening race at Daytona International Speedway

Chase Briscoe piloted the No. 19 JGR Toyota to a fourth-place finish in the 2025 Daytona 500 while claiming the Busch Light Pole Award for the race as well. However, further inspection at the NASCAR Research & Development Center in Concord, North Carolina, initially found the No. 19 in violation of Section 14.1 of the Rule Book, which pertains to overall assembled vehicles rules, and 14.5.8, which deals with the spoiler.

Specifically, the spoiler base was found to be modified on the No. 19 car. The spoiler base is a single-source part and cannot be modified.

In overturning the ruling, the three-member panel determined: “The panel believes that the elongation of some of the holes on the No. 19 Cup car spoiler base is caused by the process of attaching that specific spoiler base to the rear deck and not modification of the single source part.”

“We appreciate the process NASCAR has in place that allowed us the opportunity to present our explanation of what led to the penalty issued to our No. 19 team,” team owner Joe Gibbs said in a statement. “We are thankful for the consideration and ruling by the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. It is obviously great news for our 19 team and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. We look forward to focusing on the remainder of our season starting this weekend in Phoenix.”

Briscoe was initially docked 100 driver points and 10 playoff points. JGR was fined $100,000 and deducted 100 owner points, as well as 10 playoff points. Crew chief James Small was suspended for four races. All of that is rescinded following the appeal.

With the ruling overturned, Briscoe is now 15th in the Cup Series standings with 72 points earned on the season. Prior to the panel’s decision, Briscoe was placed 40th in the Cup table.

“Biggest points day of my career! We’re back!” Briscoe posted on social media. “In all seriousness thank you to NASCAR for giving us the option to show our evidence and huge thank you to everyone at (Joe Gibbs Racing) who put in countless hours to put everything together.”

The three-member panel was comprised of Dixon Johnston, Hunter Nickell and Cathy Rice.

Joe Gibbs Racing Announces Multi-Year Partnership with KING’S HAWAIIAN®

Joe Gibbs Racing Announces Multi-Year Partnership with KING’S HAWAIIAN®

Denny Hamlin

Joe Gibbs Racing announced today that the organization has signed a multi-year agreement with King’s Hawaiian. As part of the partnership, Denny Hamlin will drive the No. 11 King’s Hawaiian Toyota Camry XSE in four NASCAR Cup Series races this season.

2025 marks the 75th anniversary of King’s Hawaiian. While the company has grown since Robert Taira founded his first bakery in Hilo, HI in 1950, King’s Hawaiian has remained a family-owned business dedicated to making irresistible food that brings people together, sparking good times and inspiring joy in every bite. Today, they are best known for their best-selling Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls, Slider Buns, and Hamburger Buns, as well as the newest addition to the snacking game, irresistibly sweet and salty Pretzel Bites!

“We are thrilled to have King’s Hawaiian join our family at Joe Gibbs Racing,” said Joe Gibbs, owner and founder of Joe Gibbs Racing. “Their dinner rolls and other products have really become a part of the daily lives of so many families over the past 75 years and we look forward to helping them celebrate such a significant anniversary this season both on and off the track.”

King’s Hawaiian is scheduled to be the primary sponsor of Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota for races at Atlanta Motor Speedway (June 28), Daytona International Speedway (August 23), Bristol Motor Speedway (September 13), and Martinsville Speedway (October 26). In addition to its four-race primary sponsorship, King’s Hawaiian will also be featured as a full-season associate partner with Hamlin and the No. 11 team.

"As two family-owned businesses with a shared commitment to excellence and a long-standing tradition of continuous innovation and entrepreneurship, we are thrilled to announce this partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing and Denny Hamlin,” said Raouf Moussa, chief marketing officer for King’s Hawaiian. “This collaboration represents a perfect alignment of values and a unique opportunity to engage with the passionate NASCAR community to showcase our irresistible products and aloha spirit to millions of fans across the country."

Hamlin will be competing in his 20th full-time season in the NASCAR Cup Series. Entering 2025, Hamlin is tied for 12th on the all-time wins list with 54 victories, including three wins last year. 2025 is a year of change for the 44-year-old Virginia native as he will be working with crew chief Chris Gayle after Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Hamlin’s previous crew chief Chris Gabehart has been promoted to the team’s competition director role.

The King’s Hawaiian slate of races lines up well with Hamlin’s on-track success. He owns victories at all four tracks, including five at Martinsville, four at Bristol, three at Daytona, and one at Atlanta.

“We’re very excited to welcome King’s Hawaiian to our team,” said Hamlin. “It’s certainly a product we are very familiar with in our household and a great brand that has made a strong commitment to our sport. I’m looking forward to all the exciting things that we can do on and off the track to elevate their program to the next level.”

King's Hawaiian had served previously as a primary sponsorship partner for Brad Keselowski and the No. 6 RFK Racing team. King's Hawaiian's partnership with RFK Racing last three seasons from 2022 to 2024.

Teammates Martin Truex Jr. & Denny Hamlin Vie for Regular Season Championship

Teammates Martin Truex Jr. & Denny Hamlin Vie for Regular Season Championship

Truex Jr Starts P13 tonight with Hamlin P19

Teammates Martin Truex Jr. & Denny Hamlin Vie for Regular Season Championship

It all comes down to unpredictable Daytona International Speedway to decide who will win this season’s NASCAR Cup Series Regular Season Championship. One thing is for certain, a Joe Gibbs Racing driver will be taking home the prestigious honor, trophy and fifteen (15) Playoff bonus points. The question is, ‘Which one?’

Currently, Martin Truex Jr. holds the NASCAR Cup Series’ point standings lead by 39 points over his teammate Denny Hamlin in second. Truex can clinch the Regular Season Championship, no matter what Hamlin does, if he scores 22 points tonight.

Seems not too difficult, and normally that might be the case, but this time Truex is facing some daunting obstacles. The first being the unpredictability of ‘superspeedway racing,’ and Truex has not won a superspeedway event in the NASCAR Cup Series in his career. At Daytona, Truex has made 36 starts posting three top fives and six top 10s. He has finished runner-up at the 2.5-mile track twice, the most recent coming in the 2018 DAYTONA 500, where finished runner-up to Denny Hamlin.

The second biggest obstacle to overcome this weekend is his teammate Denny Hamlin, who just so happens to be one of the best active drivers on superspeedways. He leads all drivers entered this weekend in wins at Daytona International Speedway with three victories (2016, 2019, 2020). In total, Hamlin has made 35 starts at Daytona putting up three wins, 11 top fives, and 12 top 10s.

Teammates Martin Truex Jr. & Denny Hamlin Vie for Regular Season Championship

If Truex (2017) wins the 2023 Regular Season Championship this weekend, he will join Kyle Busch (2018, 2019) as the only two drivers to win it multiple times.

If Hamlin takes the Regular Season Championship, he will become the sixth different driver in series history to win the prestigious honor; joining Kyle Busch (2018, 2019), Chase Elliott (2022), Kyle Larson (2021), Kevin Harvick (2020) and Martin Truex JR. (2017).

Coy Gibbs Obituary

Gibbs Obituary

James Funeral Home of Huntersville is Serving the Family.

Coy Gibbs Obituary

OBITUARY: On Sunday, November 6th, Coy Randall Gibbs died peacefully in his sleep, hours after celebrating the Xfinity Championship won by his oldest son Ty. It was a happy day and Coy’s last moments on earth were filled with joy and laughter. Though grief-stricken, the Gibbs family rests in the knowledge that Coy now knows joy that far exceeds any earthly experience.

Coy is survived by his wife of nearly 24 years, Heather, and their four children, Ty (20), Elle (18), Case (16), and Jett (14). He is also survived by parents, Joe and Pat Gibbs along with 9 nieces and nephews. Coy was 49 years old and joins his brother JD in heaven, who preceded him in death in 2019, also at the age of 49.

An accomplished athlete, Coy played 4-years as a starting linebacker at Stanford and competed as a driver in the NASCAR Late-Model, All-Pro, and Truck series, earning Rookie of the Year in All-Pro. His professional life was spent coaching alongside his father in the NFL, founding the JGR Motocross team he ran for over a decade, and serving most recently serving as the Vice Chairman and COO of Joe Gibbs Racing.

Coy would not care to be remembered for any of these accomplishments and made that clear in his remarks in the media center after Saturday’s championship win. What mattered most to Coy on Saturday was not his title at JGR but his role as Ty’s dad. Similarly, he was an advocate for Elle, encouraging her to pursue college admission at the highest levels and proud of her drive and determination. He coached Case and Jett in numerous sports and enjoyed watching them compete and excel.

Coy was never comfortable in the spotlight and preferred to support those he loved from the background. He was a passionate entrepreneur and loved setting others up for success, whether his own children, his late brother’s sons, the JGR family, the ministries of JGR, and the Pop Warner players he coached for 8 seasons. He was fiercely loyal, quietly generous, mercilessly sarcastic, and tender-hearted in ways he rarely allowed others to see. These people and these moments were his treasures. And heaven is now his reward.

The 17-year-old North Carolina driver dominated the General Tire #ANYWHEREISPOSSIBLE 200 at Pocono Raceway Friday en route to his third career ARCA Menards Series win.

To get the victory, Gibbs out-ran runner up Chandler Smith and third-place Sam Mayer, who were celebrating their 18th and 17th birthdays, respectively, on race day.

Two weeks after he held off Mayer at Ohio’s Toledo Speedway in the ARCA Menards Series East, Gibbs was even better in his No. Monster/Terrible Herbst/ORCA Toyota; his margin of victory on the 2.5-mile tri-oval was 2.314 seconds. It was Gibbs’ sixth win in the ARCA Menards, East and West series in just 21 starts.

Gibbs is also the 28th consecutive different ARCA Menards winner at Pocono, a streak that dates back to 2006 and includes current NASCAR Cup Series drivers Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Joey Logano, Ty Dillon, Chase Elliott and Cole Custer.

Chandler Smith, who was fastest in practice earlier in the day, passed Mayer late to take the second spot but could not run down Gibbs.

Bret Holmes finished fourth and championship points leader Michael Self was fifth.

Hailie Deegan, Derek Griffith, Drew Dollar, Ryan Huff and Scott Melton rounded out the top 10.

Self was able to improve his points lead to 15 on Dollar and 16 on Deegan after four races. Holmes, who picked up his second straight top five in ARCA Menards Series is 24 back of Self.

The ARCA Menards Series will be back on track for the Calypso Lemonade 200 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis on Friday, July 3, 2020.

Joe Gibbs Racing Hot Streak

Joe Gibbs Racing Hot Streak #NASCAR

JGR Has Won The Last Three Consecutive Pocono Cup Races

In five of the last nine NASCAR Cup Series races at Pocono Raceway one team has been unstoppable – Joe Gibbs Racing.

Starting with Matt Kenseth’s win on Aug. 2, 2015, Joe Gibbs Racing has won five of the last nine NASCAR Cup Series races at Pocono Raceway including the last three consecutive - Kyle Busch’s win in July of 2017 and his back-to-back victories in July 2018 and June 2019 and Denny Hamlin’s victory last July.

Now as the series returns for a special doubleheader weekend at Pocono Raceway, two JGR drivers (Kyle Busch & Erik Jones) are still looking for their first wins of 2020. Busch, the defending winner of last season’s June Pocono race, is currently ninth in points, the highest ranked driver in the standings without a win this year. But Pocono has been particularly good to Busch as of late, in his last seven series starts at the track he has put up three wins and seven consecutive top 10s.

Busch’s teammate Erik Jones hasn’t won at Pocono Raceway yet, but he has put up some impressive performances in his six career starts, collecting four top fives and the series leading average finish of 8.3. Jones will need to claw his way back into postseason contention, as he dropped to 17th in the standings following Talladega - the first spot outside the Playoff cutoff. He is just one point behind Tyler Reddick in 16th.

Plus, let’s not forget five-time Pocono winner Denny Hamlin (2006 sweep, July 2009, June 2010 and July 2019) and two-time winner Martin Truex Jr. (June 2015, June 2018) will be in the mix this weekend as well. Hamlin leads the series in wins this season with three victories (Daytona, Darlington, Homestead) and will be looking to pad his series leading 18 Playoff points this weekend.

His teammate Truex also has a victory this season (Martinsville) and will look to get his first Pocono checkered flag for Joe Gibbs Racing. The New Jersey native’s previous two series wins at Pocono were with Furniture Row Racing, and he actually is one of just 11 drivers to accomplish the feat in multiple manufacturers (Chevrolet, Toyota); joining Kurt Busch (Ford, Dodge, Chevrolet), Bill Elliott (Buick, Ford), Darrell Waltrip (Buick, Chevrolet), Denny Hamlin (Chevrolet, Toyota), Geoffrey Bodine (Chevrolet, Ford), Harry Gant (Chevrolet, Oldsmobile), Kasey Kahne (Dodge, Chevrolet), Rusty Wallace (Ford, Pontiac), Terry Labonte (Ford, Chevrolet) and Tim Richmond (Pontiac, Chevrolet).

Rest In Peace J.D. Gibbs

Rest In Peace J.D. Gibbs

Co-Founder of Joe Gibbs Racing, Dies at 49

Rest In Peace J.D. Gibbs - NASCAR

J.D. Gibbs, who followed his famous father’s path from football to stock-car racing, died Friday evening. He was 49.

Gibbs’ passing was announced by Joe Gibbs Racing, the family’s racing team, citing “complications following a long battle with a degenerative neurological disease.” Gibbs had undergone treatment for symptoms impacting areas of brain function in recent years.

Gibbs served as president and later co-chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing. Before joining the organization’s senior management, Gibbs was an over-the-wall crewmember and a part-time driver, making 13 NASCAR national series starts from 1998-2002.

Rest In Peace J.D. Gibbs - NASCAR

“We were privileged to watch J.D. Gibbs grow within the sport, displaying an endearing personality, a keen eye for talent and the strong business acumen that helped grow Joe Gibbs Racing into a pre-eminent NASCAR team,” NASCAR Chairman & CEO Jim France said in a statement. “The NASCAR family has lost a truly special member. On behalf of NASCAR and the France family, I extend my deepest condolences to Joe Gibbs, Pat, Melissa, Coy and the entire Gibbs family.”

“I wasn’t really stellar from an athletic standpoint,” J.D. Gibbs told the Richmond Times-Dispatch in 2006. “So for me to go into business, starting a family business with my dad, was really great. I’m glad we had a chance to do that together.”

J.D. Gibbs’ competitive spirit translated into his management style, fueling a period of dramatic growth for Joe Gibbs Racing. The organization expanded to a two-car team in 1999 and quickly snared its first two championships — with Bobby Labonte in 2000 and Tony Stewart in 2002.

The younger Gibbs was also instrumental in forming the JGR Diversity Program in conjunction with his father and the late Reggie White, an NFL Hall of Famer. That initiative groomed Aric Almirola for a career in NASCAR’s big leagues and continued with the ascension of Mexican-born standout Daniel Suarez to the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series ranks.

During difficult times, one guy was flourishing and that was Stewart, who had his greatest season and arguably, the best summer stretch in NASCAR history with J.D. running day-to-day operations in 2005. Stewart scored five wins and had career-highs in top-fives (17) and top-10s (25), good enough to bring home his second Cup Series title. It was JGR’s third title in six years and J.D.’s first and only Cup title as a sole owner.

On J.D.’s 47th birthday in 2016, Hamlin eked out future teammate Martin Truex, Jr. by 0.010 seconds in the closest Daytona 500 finish in history. Known for crediting J.D. as the guy that gave him his big break in NASCAR, Hamlin dedicated the victory to him. “It’s the pinnacle of my career, for sure. I haven’t got a championship yet. This is obviously the biggest win for myself,” said Hamlin. “It’s just the circumstances, J.D. Gibbs, who found me about 12, 13 years ago, it’s his birthday today, he’s been so pivotal to myself and my team and supporting me for the past 11 years.”

Joe Gibbs Racing Announces Crew Chief Hires For 2019 Season

Joe Gibbs Racing Announces Crew Chief Hires For 2019 Season

Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) announces today it’s crew chief lineup for the 2019 season.

  • Chris Gabehart Named Crew Chief and Eric Phillips Named Car Chief for No. 11 MENCS Toyota
  • Jeff Meendering Named Crew Chief for the No. 19 Xfinity Series Toyota
  • Ben Beshore Named Crew Chief for No. 18 Xfinity Series Toyota
  • Mark McFarland Named Crew Chief for JGR’s ARCA Series Toyota

Chris Gabehart will serve as crew chief on the No. 11 MENCS Toyota. Gabehart spent the past three seasons as a crew chief in JGR’s Xfinity Series program, capturing a total of nine wins over that time. Eric Phillips will also make the move from the Xfinity Series to assume the role of car chief with the No. 11 team. He compiled eight wins over three seasons as crew chief on the No. 18 Xfinity Series team.

In addition, JGR announces the addition of two crew chiefs to its Xfinity Series program.

Jeff Meendering returns to the organization to fill the role vacated by Gabehart as crew chief on the No. 19 Xfinity Series with driver Brandon Jones. Meendering spent that past two seasons with Stewart-Haas Racing as crew chief on the No. 00 car.

Ben Beshore will move from his current role as engineer on JGR’s No. 18 MENCS team to replace the vacancy left by Phillips as crew chief for the No. 18 Xfinity Series Toyota.

JGR’s ARCA Series team will also have an addition for 2019 with the hire of crew chief Mark McFarland. He joins the organization from MDM Motorsports where he served as team manager and crew chief in the K&N Series as well as ARCA.

“With such a short offseason it’s important to start work toward the 2019 season immediately and we are proud with the teams we have assembled now, both in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and in the Xfinity Series,” said Joe Gibbs, Owner of Joe Gibbs Racing. “With Chris Gabehart joining Adam Stevens, Chris Gayle, and Cole Pearn on the Cup side we believe we have the right leaders in place to benefit our entire organization.

“In addition, we take a tremendous amount of pride in our accomplishments in the Xfinity Series and are excited to have Jeff Meendering and Ben Beshore join Jason Ratcliff to lead our efforts there, as well as bolster our developmental program in ARCA with the addition of Mark McFarland.”

There will probably be a huge party at the Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) facility on Monday, as the organization and Toyota swept the weekend at Richmond Raceway for the second time in 2018.

Christopher Bell – #NASCAR Xfinity Series

Christopher Bell kicked off the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs with his win at Richmond Raceway. The checkered flag for the ‘GoBowling.com 250’ was his fifth win of the season.

“I’ll tell you what, buddy, that’s pretty cool,” Bell said. “It’s not very often that you get to win with a car that’s not a winning car, so we’ll take it. Just thank you to my pit crew for the awesome pit stops tonight. Jason Ratcliff [crew chief] did a great job making this thing better each and every time we hit the pit road. Man, I'm just pumped. To be able to sweep Richmond and to get five wins on top of that just couldn’t be happier.”

Bell also won the Xfinity Series race at Richmond in April.

However, in the end, it was 2015 Champion, Busch who held off a hard-charging Harvick in the ‘Federated Auto Parts 400’ for the win at Richmond Raceway.

It was his sixth career victory at the ¾-mile track and the 50th win of his Cup Series career, tying Ned Jarrett and Junior Johnson for eleventh on the all-time list.

“It’s really good to have the win to be able to go into next week. I think anytime you can punch your ticket into the next round just makes it even better,” said Busch, who led 92 laps after starting from the rear of the field “The car wasn’t great early, but once we made some adjustments, the car really came to us and took off.”

Busch also won the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond in April.

Next Weekend

Next weekend remains prominent on all the playoff drivers' minds as four of the sixteen drivers will be eliminated. The third playoff race at Charlotte Motor Speedway offers additional question marks since it will be contested on a completely unknown circuit. The ‘Roval’ is part road course and part oval; a configuration that has never been utilized in the series.

“I’m really excited to not only get back to JGR, but to get back on track in 2018 and continue building on the success Chris Gayle and I had in 2017,” said Jones. “We were able to accomplish the goal of winning Rookie of the Year in 2017 and we’ve set some big goals for this year. With great partners in DEWALT, Reser’s Fine Foods, Sport Clips and Circle K, I know that we have all we need to get the No. 20 in Victory Lane for my first Cup win and to make 2018 our best season yet.
