How NASCAR’s New Championship Format Works

NASCAR has announced a return to The Chase championship format for all three national series beginning in 2026, with a modified structure from the previous iteration designed to reward performance throughout the season and provide a larger sample size to determine the championship.

 

Below is a breakdown of how the new format works.

 

HOW MANY DRIVERS MAKE THE POSTSEASON?

The number of postseason drivers remains the same from the previous elimination-style format, but the manner in which drivers qualify changes (more on that below). For the NASCAR Cup Series, 16 drivers advance to The Chase. The number of drivers for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series is 12 and for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, 10.

 

HOW DO DRIVERS QUALIFY FOR THE CHASE?

The top 16 drivers following the regular-season finale for the NASCAR Cup Series advance to the postseason. It’s the top 12 drivers for the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and top 10 for the Craftsman Truck Series.

CAN DRIVERS QUALIFY FOR THE CHASE VIA ‘WIN AND IN’?

No, “win and in” is no longer a means to advance to the postseason. It is strictly based on points standings for each national series.

 

HOW MANY POSTSEASON RACES ARE THERE?

Like the previous elimination-style format, there are 10 Chase races for the Cup Series following a 26-race regular season. There are nine Chase races for the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and seven for NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

 

ARE THERE ANY CHANGES TO THE POINTS STRUCTURE?

Yes. Wins are now worth 55 points, which is a notable increase from the previous structure of 40 points for a win. The remaining positions pay the same points (35 for second, 34 for third, 33 for fourth, etc.) and stage points are also the same (10 points for first, nine points for second, eight points for third, etc.). The goal is to reward drivers who go for wins, not just strong points days, and ensure aggressive racing and strong team performance remain central to each weekend.

 

ONCE THE CHASE BEGINS, ARE THERE ANY ELIMINATIONS?

No, The Chase does not have eliminations.

 

ARE POINTS RESEEDED FOR THE CHASE?

Yes, points are re-seeded just once for The Chase — following the end of the regular season and based on where drivers finish in the standings for the regular season.

 

Here is what reseeded points look like for the NASCAR Cup Series. (The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series seedings will be the same, except cut off at 12 and 10, respectively.)

Yes. As recognition for sustained excellence, the top driver at the end of the regular season will earn a 25-point cushion over the second seed. The entirety of the regular season is valued with the descending points structure.

 

HOW IS THE CHAMPION DETERMINED?

Whichever driver in The Chase has the most points following the season finale is the champion.

 

HOW WAS THE CHASE FORMAT DECIDED?

The changes come after an extensive review that included collaboration between owners, drivers, OEMs, tracks, broadcast partners and — most importantly — the fans. The enhanced format follows an exhaustive Playoff Committee and fan-feedback review that put forward three key recommendations:

 

• A larger sample size for a championship
• Bolster the importance of each race
• Rewarding consistency while maintaining the importance of winning

#NASCAR to Announce New Championship Format

Ricky Stenhouse Confirms on Fox and Friends

 

NASCAR confirmed on Thursday afternoon that they have scheduled a press conference "to announce the championship format for the 2026 season and beyond", bringing an end to the modern format after 12 years.

 

That announcement is scheduled to take place on Monday, January 12 at 3:30 p.m. ET at NASCAR Productions Facility in Concord, North Carolina, and it is set to end months of speculation regarding what the new format might look like.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., NASCAR Cup Series driver for Hyak Motorsports, went on Fox & Friends this morning to talk about the 2026 NASCAR points format. He described it as “points oriented” as well as “something we used to use and was well appreciated”.

 

The announcement comes ahead of the 2026 racing season, which is set to begin with the exhibition Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 1 (8 p.m. ET, FOX, HBO Max, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

 

The NASCAR Cup Series campaign begins in earnest with the 68th running of the “Great American Race,” the Daytona 500 on Sunday, Feb. 15 (2:30 p.m. ET, FOX, HBO Max, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

The NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs Championship 4 field is cemented after William Byron’s  walkoff win on Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.

 

Both Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe clinched Championship 4 spots by winning earlier in the semifinal round, and despite having engine issues at Martinsville, they will fight for the Bill France Cup next Sunday at Phoenix Raceway (3 p.m. ET, NBC, Peacock, HBO Max, MRN Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, NBC Sports App).

 

Kyle Larson clinched the final spot in the title-deciding round by seven points over Christopher Bell.

 

Only one this is for certain; it will be a Joe Gibbs Racing Driver (Briscoe or Hamlin) or a Hendrick Motorsports Driver (Byron or Larson) with the championship cup next weekend.

NASCAR Xfinity Playoff 4

Connor Zilisch; Carson Kvapil; Justin Allgaier; Jesse Love

Of the four drivers fighting for the 2025 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship next weekend.JR Motorsports teammates Connor Zilisch and Justin Allgaier were already locked in before Martinsville, but they will be joined by teammate Carson Kvapil, so JRM drivers will make up 75% of the final four.

 

The other driver is a fellow member of Team Chevrolet, ensuring a bowtie-backed driver wins it all. That will be Jesse Love  for Richard Childress Racing.

NASCAR Craftsman Truck Playoff 4

Corey Heim; Ty Majeski; Tyler Ankrum; Kaden Honeycutt

Corey Heim has had a dominant season, shattering a win record that has been standing since the 1990s. He has led over 1500 laps, and is in a completely different universe when his stats are compared to his title rivals. Further, Heim has also been here before, making the Championship 4 in both 2023 and 2024 as well.

 

Nevertheless, Corey will have to best Ty Majeski; Tyler Ankrum; Kaden Honeycutt to win the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship.

Ford Captures All Three 2023 NASCAR Championships

Ryan Blaney Wins Cup Series Title

 

Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney drove Mustang to its second straight NASCAR Cup Series title by winning the championship race at Phoenix Raceway, capping a weekend that saw Ford claim all three of NASCAR’s major touring titles for the first time in its history.

 

Blaney got the job done by finishing second in the race, and beating fellow Championship 4 drivers Kyle Larson and William Byron, who ended up right behind in third and fourth, respectively.

 

The race came down to a 31-lap dash to the finish. Blaney restarted sixth while Larson was third and Byron fifth, but the Team Penske driver passed Byron three laps later and then battled Larson for the next eight circuits before finally getting past him on lap 292 of the 312-lap event.

 

From that point on, he was able to maintain his advantage and finish second to race-winner Ross Chastain.

 

“I didn't want a caution,” said Blaney after he passed Larson for the championship lead. “Once I got to the white, I felt pretty good about it, but it's just about getting there and finishing it off.”

 

Cole Custer Wins NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship

 

The third time was the charm for Cole Custer, who won his first series championship after finished second in his previous two attempts. This marks the seventh NXS championship for Ford and second in the last four years after Austin Cindric won in 2020. Ford’s other champions include: Greg Biffle (2002), Carl Edwards (2007), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (2011-12), and Chris Buescher (2015).

 

This marks the second time Stewart-Haas has won an NXS championship with Ford after Custer delivered the owner’s title in 2018. This continues a streak that has seen Mustang win a driver’s or owner’s championship in all but three seasons since coming to the series full-time in 2011.

 

“I thought it was over. I mean, I went from first to third and I was able to shift the car all night and the Doug Yates horsepower worked out and pulled me off the corner. I can’t believe we won that thing after going back to third on that restart, but I can’t say enough about these guys. I mean, we started the year off and it was a struggle and we kind of had to dig deep with each other and really talk about how to get better. To see how much this group has grown through the year and to be a part of something, I knew I wanted to work with JT. I knew that he was the guy that could make it happen and I wouldn’t want to do it with anybody else. I just can’t thank Gene Haas enough. He’s given me opportunities and I wouldn’t be here without him. I can’t thank him enough, and Ford Performance, Haas Automation, everybody at Stewart-Haas Racing. It’s awesome to bring one back to Stewart-Haas right now. Man, I’m gonna enjoy this. I’ve been waiting to hear Wayne on the radio for a few times now, so I’m pumped.”

 

Ben Rhodes Drives F-150 To Second Straight Truck Series Championship

 

Ford Performance and ThorSport Racing’s Ben Rhodes claimed his second Truck Series championship in the last three years, and the second consecutive for Ford, with a hard-earned fifth-place finish in the No. 99 Ford F-150 Cautions in a race filled with restarts, retribution, extra laps and high-action Friday night at Phoenix Raceway.

 

The evening that featured 12 caution periods, 29 laps of overtime competition and plenty of high-stakes racing – especially among the four championship contenders that earned a chance to settle the season title.

 

“I can’t even believe it,” the 26-year-old Kentucky native Rhodes said of his dramatic title win. “It’s just so awesome, man. To go 25 laps into overtime, do you know what that feels like? It’s crazy. I didn’t think we were going to make it. I thought we were going to pop a tire, that anything that could have gone wrong was going to go wrong. Grant [Enfinger] almost got me. But hats off to him, he ran a great race. I wouldn’t want to race against anybody else for the championship. He raced me clean, and I respect the heck out of him for it.”

NASCAR Fetes Its National Champions In Nashville Awards Ceremony

 

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that deuces were wild on Thursday night at the Music City Center, where NASCAR honored the champions of its top three national series at the annual NASCAR Awards.

 

Headlining the event was NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano, who drives the No. 22 Ford for Team Penske. The title was Logano’s second, following the championship he won for team owner Roger Penske in 2018.

 

Logano also made a two-time winner of crew chief Paul Wolfe, who earned his first title a decade earlier while on the pit box for Brad Keselowski.

 

Logano won two of the 10 Playoff races—the first Round of 8 race at Las Vegas to guarantee a spot in the Championship 4 as well as the race that decided the title, the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race at Phoenix.

 

The 2022 champion ended the season with four wins—in addition, his victory on the exhibition Clash at the Coliseum, the competitive debut of NASCAR’s new Next Gen Cup race car.

 

“22 in ’22,” Logano said, repeating the motto that had driven his race team throughout the season.

 

Introduced by friend and IndyCar legend Mario Andretti, Logano paid homage to his team owner and his parents.

 

“Mom, Dad… Letting me chase my dreams means so much,” said Logano, 32.

 

He congratulated Penske for winning both the Cup Series and IndyCar championships in the same season.

 

“That’s never happened before, guys,” said Logano, who ended his speech with advice for young drivers. 

 

“Coming from a guy that has made plenty mistakes in front of a lot of people… plenty of them still remind me of my mistakes,” said Logano, the youngest driver to win a Cup race at 19 years, 35 days. “No regrets. 

 

“I challenge you to take risks, make the big moves, stand up for what’s right. Because it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about winning and growing. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas.”

 

Penske described Logano as “the leader on the track and off the track. Obviously, we’ve signed him up for five more years.”

 

Wolfe was just as effusive in his praise.

 

“Joey—he’s the guy that motivates us all,” said Wolfe, who contrasted his first championship with Keselowski with the current title.

 

“Ten years ago… that first one was so early in my career I didn’t know any better,” Wolfe said. 

 

In addition to recognizing the accomplishments of each of the 16 Playoff drivers, the NASCAR Awards also honored NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Ty Gibbs and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Zane Smith.

 

Gibbs won the Xfinity Series title at Phoenix, picking up his seventh victory of the season in the process. But hours later, Gibbs’ father, Coy Gibbs died in his sleep at age 49.

 

When Ty Gibbs took the stage at the Music City Center, he was greeted with a standing ovation.

 

“Wow! Thank you. It means a lot,” Gibbs said. “Thank you for all the claps. Thank you for all the support. I really appreciate it.”

 

Team owner Joe Gibbs, Ty’s grandfather, echoed the sentiment.

 

“Thanks so much for the way you’ve reached out in these last few weeks for our family,” Joe Gibbs said.

 

Ben Kennedy, NASCAR senior vice president of racing development and strategy, introduced Zane Smith with high praise.

 

“At such a young age (23), one can’t help but feel like we’re watching a future NASCAR superstar writing the beginning of his story,” Kennedy said. 

 

Smith’s parents were in Phoenix to watch the driver of the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford win his fourth race of the season and the accompanying title.

 

“I’m still not sure if my mom was more excited to see me win or get a picture with Jeff Gordon after the race, since she’s always told me that was her dream,” Smith quipped. “So, I’m happy we were both able to accomplish our dreams that night.”

 

Ralph Maccarone was honored as the winner of the prestigious Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award. In 2012, Maccarone founded Who We Play For to inspire and empower schools, sports clubs and communities to provide heart screenings for all student athletes and students.

 

Team owner Justin Marks, who fields cars for Playoff drivers Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez, was honored with the Myers Brothers Award for outstanding contributions to stock car racing. Marks’ Trackhouse Racing enjoyed a breakout season, with Chastain winning twice and Suarez once—and Chastain leaving an indelible mark on the sport with his eye-popping high-speed trip around the Martinsville wall to earn a spot in the Championship 4.

 

For the fifth straight year, Chase Elliott won the NMPA Most Popular Driver Award, the only significant honor in the sport determined sole by vote of the fans. Elliott’s father, Bill Elliott, won the award a record 16 times. Dale Earnhardt Jr. was voted Most Popular Driver for 15 seasons.

 

Noah Gragson was the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ Most Popular Driver, and Hailie Deegan earned the honor in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

 

Jes Ferreira from CSM Production was honored as the winner of the Comcast Community Champion of the Year award for her commitment as the single parent of two adopted children.

NASCAR returns to Nashville for Champion’s Week

 

As an eventful 2022 race season enters its final turn, NASCAR announced the return of its Champion’s Week celebration to Nashville on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1.

 

The NASCAR Awards will be held on Dec. 1 at the Music City Center to formally crown this season’s NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champions. Fellow drivers, industry personalities and celebrities will take over downtown Nashville for the third year to celebrate an unforgettable 2022 season.

 

“We are pleased to announce our return to    keting Officer at NASCAR. “We are delighted to bring the celebration to Nashville once again, as the city’s energy and passion for motorsports never cease to amaze us. We are looking forward to being back following the conclusion of the 2022 season.”

 

The formal postseason Awards are a tradition that stretches back to 1981, when the event was held in New York City. It relocated to Las Vegas in 2009 and then called Nashville its home for the first time in 2019. Over the last two years NASCAR has seen a tremendous turnout from the Nashville fans not only at the race track, but for the celebration of Champion’s week. NASCAR looks to continue the tradition and conclude the season at one of the most iconic cities in the country.

Zane Smith Proves Third Time is Charm

Wins Truck Series Title

 

Nothing short of an upward trajectory has defined Zane Smith through his first three seasons as a full-time driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

 

Smith — the Rookie of the Year in 2020 and a two-time Championship 4 driver heading into 2022 — certainly brought a winning pedigree to the table. After all, Smith had already amassed three wins, 10 top-five and 27 top-10 finishes before the 2022 calendar season was a forethought.

 

But that pedigree was missing one thing, and a big one at that.

Not to worry, however. This pedigree soared to new heights following the season’s 2022 title race in Phoenix as the No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford driver toppled the triple-Toyota threat of Ty Majeski, Ben Rhodes  and Chandler Smith to net the 23-year-old his first truck title in his already-blossomed racing career.

 

Rewinding the clocks to 2020 might have established Smith’s precedent right away, considering he concluded his rookie year spectacle with three straight top-three finishes, branching between the Round of 8 and Championship 4 (third at Texas, third at Martinsville and second at Phoenix). But his 2021 campaign would have painted the picture more succinctly, considering how close Smith came to claiming the title that season. After finishing outside the top 25 through the first two Round of 8 playoff races (29th at Las Vegas and 33rd at Talladega), Smith needed to win if he wished to keep fate in his own hands. And he did just that. After winning a frantic overtime finish at Martinsville in late October, Smith’s 2021 Championship 4 berth was set in stone. But while his top-five finish at Phoenix a week later certainly wasn’t too shabby of a result, Smith finished runner-up in the championship behind Rhodes.

 

Oh, so close. Yet so far, still.

 

For Smith, 2022 would be different. While his first and second Championship 4 appearances certainly brought some glamour, 2022 needed to take another step forward toward a potential title. Third time’s the charm, so the saying goes.

 

Winning the 2022 season-opener on Feb. 18 at Daytona established the tone, and while a second place finish a week later at Vegas was disqualified following post-race inspection, Smith didn’t falter.

 

Instead, he continued to drive and thrive.

 

Winning three races (Daytona, Circuit of The Americas and Kansas) and finishing inside the top 10 in all but the disqualification within the first eight races to begin the season cemented Smith’s place as a title contender. Having a career season certainly helped his case, too — heading into the title race at Phoenix, Smith’s 2022 season included three wins, 13 top-five and 18 top-10 finishes, with the latter two marks leading the field. Maintaining a net-positive average finish (8.0) compared to his average start (10.1) only made the resume that much more impressive.

 

But a strong regular season — and a just-as-sturdy playoff run, where Smith finished inside the top 10 in five of six postseason races heading into the championship — would be almost all for naught without that championship trophy. Sure, the campaign would have arguably still been a success, but falling just short once again would have left a sour taste in the mouth of an otherwise sweet season.

 

But not this time. Instead of falling just short of the title mark, Smith soared above the rest and delivered what he was oh, so close to achieving almost a year to the day.

 

Moving the clocks back to 2020 and 2021 might have shown Smith’s talent in racing an entire season. But his 2022 emphasized tenacity in starting strong and building momentum toward the truck circuit’s premier prize. And so, claiming the championship came into being.

 

Smith’s trajectory has again leaped forward. And consider the pedigree enhanced, too.

Holding off defending champion Ben Rhodes by .236 seconds at the end of a wild final two laps of Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150, Smith put it succinctly after a celebratory burnout at Phoenix Raceway.

 

“The third time’s the charm,” exulted an emotional Smith, who said he was crying throughout the final lap after wresting the lead from Rhodes one circuit earlier.

 

“I’m going to win this,” Zane Smith said of his mind-set in overtime. “There was no other option. I was either backing it in the fence wrecking, or I was leaving tonight with a championship trophy. There were no other options, and when I saw the 18 (Chandler Smith) get underneath me I was worried that I got him too loose underneath me.

 

“Fortunately, he stayed off of me. I have a lot of respect for all three of (the other title competitors). It’s pretty impressive for some of the racing we’ve seen lately for us three to go at it that hard and that clean.”

 

Zane will return to Front Row Motorsports next season, where he’ll defend his championship and compete in selected NASCAR Cup Series races, starting with the Daytona 500.

Denver Mayor Hancock Proclaimed ‘Furniture Row Racing Day’ in the Mile High City

Congratulations to Martin Truex Jr., who is the new NASCAR Cup Series Champion. Truex and his Furniture Row Racing crew held off Kyle Busch by .681 seconds at Homestead-Miami Speedway to win the Ford Eco-Boost 400 and his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title.

"It's just overwhelming," a tearful Truex said in Victory Lane. "To think about all the rough days and bad days, the days that we couldn't run 20th, to be here. I never thought this day would come, and to be here is so unbelievable."

Once the team returned to Denver, Mayor Michael B. Hancock read a proclamation proclaiming Furniture Row Racing Day in the Mile High City, the home base for the racing team. Truex presented Mayor Hancock with a Furniture Row Racing crew shirt.

Snap - There is a Busch in the White House

If you are not following Joe Gibb’s Racing and/or NASCAR on Snapchat, you are missing out on some great insider coverage. Yesterday both accounts followed reigning #NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion, Kyle Busch and entourage as they visited the White House and met with President Obama.

It's a tradition for championship teams to get an appearance at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., and Busch brought along the men of Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 18 team who helped him win the 2015 Sprint Cup Championship last November.

"I think there were some people who thought we were going to see a Bush back here in the White House this year, but they didn't know it was going to be Kyle," Obama joked.

President Barack Obama smiled as he honored the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing team during a ceremony at the White House. In addition to remarking that he wanted to take Busch's race car for a drive, Obama also pointed out how Busch has a similar surname to someone who many thought would win the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

On Snapchat Kyle Busch reported, “So we just got finished up with the President here, at the White House, in Washington DC, Pretty Cool really neat to have him honor us for the championship last year, myself and the whole team, it was pretty awesome. He even made an M&M joke in there I think, cool opportunity here, I am standing in an oval room, I wouldn’t say it was the Oval Office . . . but you notice I am turning left . . . just kind of what we do, neat opportunity here today and I am looking forward to being able to doing sometime soon. Next time if we get the chance to come back here it will be with someone different . . . So Thanks President Obama and see you later”
