Generous Donation Means a Camp Experience for a Hundred Deserving Children

Generous Donation Means a Camp Experience for a Hundred Deserving Children

Victory Junction is incredibly honored to be the recipient of a $250,000 donation left by the late Walker M. "Buddy" Atkinson. Buddy's legacy will fund an unforgettable and life-changing camp experience for 100 kids!

Children shine at Victory Junction. Free from the confines of their disease, illness or disability, they discover that they can be a kid! How does this happen? Victory Junction has created a medically safe, yet exhilarating camp, that challenges children who have a serious medical condition to try things they never imagined possible. As they conquer activities like zip lining and archery, achieve things like riding a horse for the first time or experience bowling, fishing or swimming, children build confidence that will shape how they view the rest of their lives. That’s when they shine!

The magic happens on their lush 84 acres in the rolling hills of Randleman, North Carolina near Greensboro. Once children pass through their gates, the boundaries and limitations they live with on a daily basis disappear and they simply concentrate on having fun!

Victory Junction opened in 2004, to honor Adam Petty’s dream. Though just nineteen at the time of his death during practice crash in his NASCAR race car, Adam was so impressed by a visit to one of Paul Newman's Hole-in-the-Wall Gang camps for kids that he wanted get one going near the Petty family's home.

Grateful to Be a Member of Adam’s Heroes

Grateful to Be a Member of Adam’s Heroes

The Victory Junction camp experience is not just about playing games, it is about helping children learn more about their abilities and what they can do.

Grateful to Be a Member of Adam’s Heroes #nascar

I just had to take a moment away from my enjoyment of the #NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega to write about a ‘non-profit’ near and dear to my heart.

Victory Junction was launched in 2004 by then NASCAR driver Kyle Petty*  and his wife, Pattie, in memory of their son Adam. Adam Petty was a hard charging, up-and-coming racer who was killed at the young age of nineteen, during a practice run at New Hampshire International Speedway in 2000.

Grateful to Be a Member of Adam’s Heroes #nascar
The camp was found in memory of Adam and his special connection for children struggling with illness. They believe that every child, no matter their illness or diagnosis, should enjoy normal childhood experiences.

Grateful to Be a Member of Adam’s Heroes #nascarVictory Junction is where children, whose lives are filled with limitations and boundaries, face fun challenges and discover just how resilient they are.

Anyway I digress. We believe in this mission so strongly; our monthly donations are set to auto pay. Today, I received a letter from the camp’s annual fund manager thanking me for my support. As a monthly donor, I was granted entry into a new special group entitled “Adam’s Heroes” – what an unexpected honor!

They requested I tell my friends about Victory Junction; hence, this post. It takes about $2,500 to provide one week of camp to a child. Trust me, it has been personally satisfying to be part of this wonderful endeavor.

If you have an extra few dollars, hard these tough times I know; however if you can please consider donating. Thanks to the generosity of donors, families never pay for their child to attend camp.

"I see Adam in the smile of every child that comes through here - Kyle Petty"

*The Pettys are one of NASCAR’s most famous family. Adam’s great-grandfather Lee won the first Daytona 500 in 1959. Then came his son Richard, who won 200 races and seven Winston Cup championships during his career. Kyle followed his famous father and is still involved in the sport as a television analyst for NBC. In 1998, Adam made his professional debut.

Below is an awesome article by Meg Smith of Time Warner Cable:

* * * * * * *

Former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty is calling this year's charity ride the biggest and best ever.

The annual event raises money for Victory Junction, a camp that serves kids with chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses.

The Pettys have turned a deeply personal tragedy into a place where life is celebrated.

"There's not a day that goes by that you don't think of him, or a day that goes by that he doesn't cross my mind or make me laugh in a funny way,” Kyle Petty said. “There's never a time that I come to camp or I'm on a motorcycle, and I don't feel he's there with me."

When Petty's son, Adam, was killed in a NASCAR accident in 2000, he decided to open a camp to honor his son's memory.

“The idea for the camp came from a ride,” Petty said. “Adam and I were on a ride at Boggy Creek which is a sister camp to Victory Junction in Florida. Out of the blue, he's like 'why don't we build a camp in NC?'"

That's when Victory Junction was born.

"Our mission here is to serve kids with medical conditions ages 6-16,” said camp CEO Chad Coltrane. “What we want to do is provide those kids with a life-changing summer camp experience."

Kyle's annual charity ride has become the largest continuous donor to camp.

"So many people that go on the ride volunteer at camp, and we see a lot of campers along the way in every city we stop in,” Petty said.

"We've seen 23,000 kids that normally wouldn't get to go to any camp because of their afflictions,” said Richard Petty.

Supporters helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for the camp during this year's ride.

"Somewhere between $800,000 and $1,000,000 total,” Kyle Petty said.

When kids come to camp, their disabilities are left at the door, and they're able to do everything normal kids do at camp in a medically safe environment. It's all free for every single camper, thanks to fundraisers like the charity ride.

"From our standpoint, we see Adam every time we see a happy kid, and it makes us feel good, too,” Richard Petty said.

"When you see these kids leave with a smile on their face, that's a little bit of Adam smiling with each one of them,” Kyle Petty said.

This year marked the 22nd annual charity ride.

Plans are already in the works for next year's event.

The ‘Kyle Petty Charity Ride across America’ is one of the most successful and popular charity rides in the country. They are into their twenty-second year. This morning, the #kpcharityride staff maneuvered the approximately two hundred participants, including celebrities and support staff, who witnessed the fact that this was not the ride’s first such endeavor, with the precision of a military invasion. You must remember that everyone needs to be fed, breakfast, lunch and dinner; all the luggage must be transported; the motorcycles need to gassed and trip ready. . . .  and so much more.

The 2,150-mile motorcycle trip to raise money for Victory Junction – a camp for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses, left the Riviera Palm Springs parking lot at 9:00 a.m. sharp. At each of their scheduled stops, fans will be able to cheer on the riders. They will also have a chance to meet the stars involved including NASCAR Hall of Famer and Champion; Hershel McGriff, 2016 NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee; Harry Gant and Donnie Allison of NASCAR racing fame; Herschel Walker, former NFL great; retired Lt. Col. Allen West; and Rick Allen NBC NASCAR personality.

“What is new for the Victory Junction Camp,” Kyle Petty enthusiastically reported, “is that we are adding more weekends with more kids. When the economy got kind of rough, we had to cut back to about eight to ten weeks. We working on adding a couple of more weeks of summer camp.”

Kyle went on to explain that when they had to shorten the Camp’s season, they were only able to accommodate the sickest kids. It is his wish that the camp be opened up to all the kids who need to come. Petty is hopeful to include six to seven hundred more kids this year!

This #kpcharityride has been a huge success already. There are over twenty-five new riders this year. There is limit of hundred and twenty bikes and the spots went quickly. The charity ride also welcomed Nature’s Bakery as a new sponsor. Nature’s Bakery products include a variety of flavors of stone ground whole wheat fig bars, gluten free fig bars made with a blend of ancient grains, and dairy-free double chocolate brownies made with whole grains and blended with dates.

“Nature’s Bakery, who sponsors Danica Patrick,” Kyle Petty reported, “has given us ten million fig bars and apple fig and strawberry and lemon fig - - - and they are great.”

Please go to http://www.kylepettycharityride.com to learn more about this wonderful cause. Also if you are near Phoenix, Arizona, be sure to stop by tonight to thank these charitable motorcycle jockeys for all they do, year after year.

Cross-Country Motorcycle Journey Enters Its 22nd Year

Twenty two years ago, NASCAR driver Kyle Petty combined his passion for helping others with his love of motorcycles to create the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America.
