The Victory Junction's counselors play a huge role in shaping the Victory Junction camp experience. They help campers look beyond their limitations and encourage them to focus on their strengths. Victory Junction caught up with one of their counselors and had to share one of her amazing camp moments.
“Victory Junction teaches you that you should never limit someone based on preconceptions of their disability. It's amazing to see campers really blossom into themselves here." - Ashley
Ashley: We had a group come to the adventure tower and there was a girl without any leg mobility who really wanted to climb the tower. I had the awesome opportunity to help her climb.
The camper couldn’t put any weight on her legs at all, so after pulling up with her arms, she would hold onto the rope as I moved her legs and supported her while she rested. When she was ready, we would start all over again- reaching up and pulling higher and higher.
Even though she was nervous and scared, she reached her goal and was so excited! She didn’t think she could climb, but she tried and challenged herself. It was awesome to watch her succeed and to have pride in her accomplishment.
Counselors provide kids with the tools they need
to be successful not just at camp, but in life.
Ashley is a first-year Victory Junction counselor. She currently attends Winthrop University, studying to become a child life specialist.
