Michael McDowell still has work to do to qualify for the NASCAR All-Star Race, but McDowell's pit crew left North Wilkesboro Speedway on Friday with 100,000 reasons to celebrate. Despite entering NASCAR All-Star Open qualifying as a heavy underdog, McDowell's No. 71 Spire Motorsports crew collected a $100,000 bonus for changing four tires in 12.587 seconds to win the NASCAR Pit Crew Challenge presented by Mechanix Wear.

McDowell will start fourth in Sunday's All-Star Open after Shane van Gisbergen, Carson Hocevar and Noah Gragson topped the No. 71 team's overall time across three laps and a four-tire pit stop. McDowell has to finish in the top two in the Open to advance to Sunday night's $1 million NASCAR All-Star Race, but his team stole the spotlight on Friday.

"This is awesome," said Dax Hollifield, the jackman on the No. 71 crew and a former Virginia Tech football player. "It's definitely beyond my wildest dreams. We've been working hard this year. We're probably the youngest team on pit road. "

"It was just hard work and determination that made the difference. I've got no words. I can't breathe. I blacked out during the stop."

Wood Brothers Racing to Serve as Dignitaries for NASCAR All-Star Race

Wood Brothers Racing to Serve as Dignitaries for #NASCAR All-Star Race

Legendary Track Honors Legendary Team

The Wood family — (left to right) Keven Wood, Jordan (Wood) Hicks, Jon Wood,
Kim Wood Hall, Len Wood and Eddie Wood — will help kick off the All-Star Race
on Sunday, May 18, in celebration of Wood Brothers Racing’s 75th year.

As Wood Brothers Racing celebrates their 75th year in 2025, North Wilkesboro Speedway will honor the team with dignitary roles for the NASCAR All-Star Race on May 18. Founded in 1950 by brothers Glenn and Leonard Wood, the oldest active NASCAR team has participated in races at the historic facility since 1957, shortly after the track was paved for the first time.

Wood Brothers Racing remains a family-run organization, with Glenn’s sons Eddie and Len Wood serving as chief executive officer and chief operating officer, respectively. Their sister, Kim Wood, is the team’s chief financial officer. Eddie’s children, Jon and Jordan, work alongside them as team president and chief marketing officer.

Len will serve as the honorary starter for the NASCAR All-Star Race, while Eddie will be the honorary pace car driver in a Ford Mustang Dark Horse. Team President Jon Wood and former All-Star Race winner and NASCAR on FOX analyst Michael Waltrip will give the command to start engines as Grand Marshals for the main event.

“North Wilkesboro holds a special place in the history of our team and the sport, and it’s one of those tracks where NASCAR’s roots run deep,” said Jon Wood, “My family has been fortunate to be part of some incredible moments there over the years. As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, it means a great deal to be recognized at a place that helped shape the sport and our team into what it is today.”

During the race, Josh Berry will pilot the No. 21 with a special throwback paint scheme to Michael Waltrip’s 1996 All-Star Race win at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

A Star-Studded Team in NASCAR’s All-Star Event

The Wood Brothers have been part of the NASCAR All-Star event since its second running, making their first appearance with Kyle Petty in 1986. They would later make appearances in the exhibition event with some of NASCAR’s most notable names, including Neil Bonnett, Morgan Shepherd, Michael Waltrip, Elliott Sadler, Ricky Rudd, Trevor Bayne, Ryan Blaney and Matt DiBenedetto.

In 1996, Waltrip picked up an unlikely win in the All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, his first victory at the Cup level. He transferred from the Open after finishing fifth and then led the final nine laps to take the victory over Rusty Wallace and Dale Earnhardt, after executing a three-wide pass to take the lead. He was the first driver to transfer from the Open and win the race.

More recently, in 2017, driving for the historic team, Ryan Blaney won the first segment of the Open and transferred to the All-Star Race. In 2020, DiBenedetto won the Open and transferred to the main event, and in 2021, he won the fan vote in the team’s most recent All-Star Race appearance.

A Historic Team at a Legendary Race Track

Between 1957 and 1996, Wood Brothers Racing recorded 46 starts, two wins, 14 top-five finishes and 23 top-10 finishes at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Team founder Glenn Wood won two poles at the venue in 1958 and 1959. Other legendary drivers competing for the Wood Brothers at North Wilkesboro Speedway included Marvin Panch, who recorded both team wins at the track in 1963 and 1964; Joe Weatherly; Curtis Turner; Tiny Lund; Cale Yarborough; Buddy Baker; Kyle Petty; Bonnett; Dale Jarrett; Shepherd; and Waltrip.

Since the revival of the venerable venue, Harrison Burton competed in the Open for the Wood Brothers in both 2023 and 2024. In 2025, Berry will pilot the famous No. 21 at North Wilkesboro Speedway for the All-Star Race, striving to create yet another unforgettable moment for the historic team at the legendary race track.

The 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race will feature more on-track action than ever before. In addition to all the NASCAR Cup Series activity, fans can enjoy zMAX CARS Tour feature races both Thursday, with The Reverend Whiskey 75 (Pro Late Models) and Friday, with the Window World 100 (Late Model Stock Cars), nights, along with the Window World 250 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race and a Jake Owen concert presented by Raymer Oil on the frontstretch Saturday.

New NASCAR All-Star Format Brings It All to North Wilkesboro

New #NASCAR All-Star Format Brings It All to North Wilkesboro

Maximum Action, Fun And Value

New NASCAR All-Star Format Brings It All to North Wilkesboro

The 2025 NASCAR All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway delivers more bang for your buck than ever before. With 50 additional laps added to the main event on Sunday, May 18, fans can expect even more exhilarating action under the lights at NASCAR’s most storied short track.

But the All-Star Race is the finale of a loaded four-day lineup that gives ticket holders incredible value all weekend long.

Here’s what a four-day ticket unlocks:

  • Thursday & Friday – High-octane short track racing with Thursday's zMAX CARS Tour Pro Late Models' The Reverend 75 and the zMAX CARS Tour Late Model Stocks' 100-lapper on Friday.
  • Friday – The return of the Pit Crew Challenge presented by Mechanix Wear, a fan-favorite event where split-second stops set the tone for Sunday
  • Saturday – A jam-packed day featuring Window World 250 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series practice, qualifying and race in addition to All-Star Heat Races and a Jake Owen concert presented by Raymer Oil
  • Sunday – A full slate with the ground-pounding NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour; the always-intense All-Star Open, and the main event: the NASCAR All-Star Race

A Format Built for Drama

This year's race format introduces a new layer of strategy and suspense with the potential for a "promoter’s caution" — a late-race reset that could flip the script and reward bold calls from atop the pit box.

Plus, for the first time, fans will witness a manufacturer’s showdown play out on track. With top drivers from Chevrolet, Ford, and Toyota all equally represented, the battle for bragging rights adds even more juice to the All-Star spotlight.

Whether you're Team Bowtie, Team Blue Oval, or siding with the Toyota sombrero, fans will have an additional rooting interest when NASCAR's biggest stars engage in 250 laps of four-wheeled combat.

Kyle Busch Defeats Ryan Blaney For Pole

Kyle Busch Defeats Ryan Blaney For Pole

In Head-To-Head Match Up to Earn Pole for NASCAR All-Star Race

Kyle Busch Defeats Ryan Blaney For Pole

Kyle Busch and the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota will start from the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR All-Star Race after defeating Ryan Blaney and the No. 12 Team Penske Ford in a head-to-head matchup for the $1 million-to-win non-points race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Each driver had to win two rounds of competition to make the final-round pairing for the opportunity to then lead the 24-car field for Sunday evening’s 125-lap race.

Sunday’s on-track schedule begins with The NASCAR Open for non-all-star qualifiers at 4:30 p.m., with three drivers transferring to the All-Star Race due to their on-track performance and one more earning a spot from the fan vote. Following the Blake Shelton concert that begins at 5:30 p.m., the NASCAR All-Star Race will begin at 7 p.m. (TV: FS1, Radio: MRN, SiriusXM Radio, 95.9 The Ranch).

The first-of-its-kind format began with a traditional single-car, one-lap opening round. From there, the fastest eight qualifiers transferred to a three-round, head-to-head eliminations bracket featuring two cars staged in adjacent pit stalls near the end of pit road. At the sound of an alert, each pit crew performed a four-tire stop and, at the drop of the jack, drivers exited their pit stalls (with no speed limit) onto the track. The first car back to the start/finish line advanced to the next round with the final pairing competing for the pole.

William Byron was quickest in the first round of NASCAR All-Star Race qualifying, with a best single-lap run of 28.528 seconds at 189.288 mph in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. The balance of the top eight qualifiers moving on to the single-elimination bracket were Blaney, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex, Jr., Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain, and Aric Almirola.

In the Round of 8, Byron defeated Almirola, Blaney got around Chastain, Larson ended Kurt Busch’s competition, and Kyle Busch got past JGR teammate Truex.

In the Round of 4, the final pairing was set when Blaney got by Byron and Larson stalled at the starting lights to give Busch an uncontested run to the start/finish.

2022 NASCAR Open and NASCAR All-Star Race Formats

2022 NASCAR Open and NASCAR All-Star Race Formats

The NASCAR All-Star Race has become one of the sport’s most innovative exhibition events, where formats and technical elements can be tested on a grand scale and this weekend’s spectacular will be no different.

NASCAR and Texas Motor Speedway announced the format and eligibility for the NASCAR All-Star Race on Sunday, May 22 that features four stages and 125 laps of on-track competition for a $1 million payday, stage winner incentives, amplified roles for the pit crews, and a distinctive head-to-head elimination qualifying format.

The NASCAR All-Star Race returns to Texas Motor Speedway for the second consecutive season and this 38th edition brings some unique twists for the eligible Cup drivers pursuing the winner-take-all $1 million payday. The most prominent twist will come in the form of a four-round qualifying format with head-to-head elimination rounds and the pivotal role of the pit crews.

The NASCAR All-Star Qualifying format is as follows:

  • • Opening round is the traditional single-car, one-lap format in reverse order of the current 2022 owner points.
  • • Fastest eight qualifiers transfer to a three-round, head-to-head elimination bracket.
  • • Elimination bracket will feature two cars staged in adjacent pit stalls near the end of pit road.
  • • At the sound of an alert, each pit crew will perform a four-tire stop and, at the drop of the jack, drivers will exit their pit stalls (with no speed limit) onto the track.
  • • First car back to the start/finish line advances to the next round.
  • • Final pairing competes for the pole.

The NASCAR All-Star Race format is as follows:

The race will consist of four stages, with the first three 25 laps in length and the fourth and final being a 50-lap shootout for the $1 million prize. The new format has provided a major incentive to win any of the opening three stages or the pit stop competition during the break between Stages 2 and 3.

  • • Stage 1 (25 laps): Stage 1 winner will start on the pole in the final stage as long as he finishes 15th or better in Stages 2 and 3.
  • • Stage 2 (25 laps): Stage 2 winner starts second in final stage as long as he finishes 15th or better in Stage 3.
  • • Special Stage Break (Pit Stop Competition): Each team must pit and perform a four-tire stop. The team with the shortest time on pit road (pit in/pit out) wins the pit crew award and the driver will start fourth in the final stage as long as he finishes 15th or better in Stage 3.
  • • Stage 3 (25 laps): Stage 3 winner starts third in final stage.
  • • Stage 4 (50 laps): Stage 1 winner starts first, Stage 2 winner second, Stage 3 winner third and pit stop competition winner fourth. If a “natural” caution occurs between laps 15-25 of the final stage, standard race procedures will be in effect. If no “natural” caution occurs during that time, NASCAR will call an “All Star” competition caution.
  • • Winner of Stage 4 earns $1 million.

NASCAR All-Star Open format is as follows:

  • • The NASCAR All-Star Open will run immediately prior to the NASCAR All-Star Race and will include three stages (20 laps / 20 laps / 10 laps).
  • • The winner of each stage will earn a spot in the NASCAR All-Star Race.
  • • The winner of the Fan Vote will also earn a spot in the NASCAR All-Star Race. Fans may vote for their favorite driver by visiting NASCAR.com.

Who’s already locked into the Main Event – the 2022 NASCAR All-Stars Heading into this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, 20 different drivers have earned their spot in the NASCAR All-Star Race on May 22 at 8 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Drivers eligible for the 2022 NASCAR All-Star Race consist of:

  • • Cup Series drivers who have earned a points-paying race victory in either 2021 or 2022.
  • • Previous NASCAR All-Star Race winners who are competing full-time this season.
  • • Previous NASCAR Cup Series champions who are competing full-time this season.

In total, 24 drivers will make a start in this season’s NASCAR All-Star race and four additional positions will be added to the NASCAR All-Star Race field following the NASCAR All-Star Open – the NASCAR Open Stage 1 Winner, the NASCAR Open Stage 2 Winner, the NASCAR All-Star Open Winner, and the Fan Vote Winner.
