Clauson Organ Recipients To Serve as Driven2SaveLives BC39 Grand Marshals

The inaugural Driven2SaveLives BC39 presented by NOS Energy Drink will have a fitting pair of honorary race starters in a celebration of the life and legacy of late race car driver and event namesake Bryan Clauson.

Dan Alexander and Dan Gerdes, two Nebraska residents who received life-saving organ donations from Clauson, will serve as grand marshals of the event and wave the green flag on the 39-lap USAC P1 Insurance National Midget Championship feature Thursday, Sept. 6 at The Dirt Track at IMS.

The race on the new, quarter-mile clay oval inside Turn 3 of the famed IMS asphalt oval honors late USAC champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 starter Clauson and increases awareness of the Indiana Donor Network and its Driven2SaveLives campaign. A USAC-record 118 Midget cars are entered.

“Seeing both Dan Alexander and Dan Gerdes wave the green to start this historic race will provide an emotional and worthy tribute in Bryan’s honor,” Indianapolis Motor Speedway President J. Douglas Boles said. “So many members of this record-breaking field knew Bryan well, and they’ll be racing with extra passion and inspiration on Thursday night after such a moving celebration of his living legacy.”

Alexander, a 65-year old resident of Papillion, Nebraska, received Clauson’s heart. Gerdes, a 29-year-old resident of Auburn, Nebraska, received Clauson’s lungs. Clauson passed away following injuries sustained in a Midget car crash in 2016, but he saved five lives through organ donation and healed up to 75 people through tissue donation.

Clauson’s family works tirelessly in support of Driven2SaveLives, a grassroots effort among the racing community to support increased organ, tissue and eye donor registration. Indiana Donor Network and Verizon INDYCAR Series driver Stefan Wilson launched the campaign in April 2016 following the death of his brother and fellow INDYCAR driver Justin Wilson. Clauson was one of the most popular USAC racers in history and also climbed to the Indianapolis 500. He raced in the 2012, 2015 and 2016 Indy 500’s, leading laps in the 100th Running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” in 2016.

He was a three-time USAC National Midget Series Champion, two-time USAC National Sprint Car Champion and three-time USAC National Drivers Champion. He also won the 2014 Chili Bowl and was elected into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2018.

What You Need to Know about the 32nd Chili Bowl Midget Nationals

The Chili Bowl Midget Nationals is an indoor midget car racing event. It takes place at the Tulsa Expo Center in January, just two weeks after Christmas. It has been described as the "biggest Midget race of the year". 

The 1987 inaugural "Super Bowl of Midget Racing" event consisted of just fifty-two midgets competing in the 2-day event. This year there are three hundred and thirty-seven (137) drivers per-registered to participate.

2014 Chili Bowl Midget Nationals Winner Bryan Clauson was involved in a midget car crash at Belleville High-Banks Speedway on August 6, 2017 in Belleville, Kansas. He died the following night.

Bryan Clauson’s ‘Celebrate of Life’ at Kokomo Speedway

It Will Be A Day For Friends, Family And Fans; All Are Invited To Bryan Clauson’s Celebration Of Life.

 

 

A day full of stories and memories of the four-time USAC national champion Bryan Clauson will then be topped off by a race. The admission is free for the entire day and night.

Clauson was a racer from Noblesville, Indiana. He sustained injures after a crash in Kansas and died in a hospital in Nebraska earlier this month.

Kokomo Speedway  was one of his favorite tracks. The dirt track, where the Clauson won a 30-lap sprint car race on the night of this year's Indianapolis 500, will host this public event.

It all begins at 1:00 p.m., with stories shared from friends, family, competitors and car owners. USAC  announcer Dillon Welch will maintain some semblance of order.

Memories will be shared until 4:00 p.m., when it will be time to let the Kokomo Speedway track crew do their thing in preparation for the night’s races that get under way with hot laps at 6:30 p.m.

To top it all off, Tim Dugger will perform a free post-race concert where free Coca-Cola will be on hand while supplies last. It’s Coca-Cola of course since that was BC’s beverage of choice.

And for those unable to make the trip to Kokomo, www.thecushion.com  will stream the entire day and night free of charge.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Driver Ricky Stenhouse was inspired by his friend Bryan Sunday. He matched his career-best finish by bringing the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford home second to race-winner Kevin Harvick at Bristol by driving the wheels off of his car in the rain-delayed Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race.

"We really wanted to get this Bryan Clauson tribute car in Victory Lane," Stenhouse said after the race. "It just wasn't meant to be today. We made our car a lot faster throughout the race and came from two laps down to get back on the lead lap. We missed some wrecks and gave it all we had."

Note: The Indiana Donor Network will be on hand as well throughout the day with on-site registration. Those that aren’t already organ donors can register to do so on site. The record for registrations at an event is around the 100 mark. The goal tomorrow is to reach 200 organ donor registrations, as the chase for 200 lives on.

NASCAR Driver Joey Gase’s mother died suddenly of a brain aneurysm in April 2011. While he was only eighteen at the time, Joey made the courageous decision to donate her organs. From that traumatic experience, the Xfinity driver’s passion for sharing the message about donation rivals his passion for racing.

In a post shared on the Byran Clauson Facebook page, it was announced that the successful and popular racer was able to help save the lives of five others in the hospital through organ donation.

We would all like to thank you for all of your prayers and concerns over the last few days. It provided strength and comfort during a very difficult time for us.

Nothing prepares you for these moments. We have all watched from afar as other families have had to face their own tragedies or been there to support our family and friends as they have spent their own time in the hospital. However, nothing makes you ready to say goodbye. You take each moment as it comes and we could not have made it to this point with out all of you.

One of the gifts that Bryan gave us while we sat next to him praying for some good news, was the moment we found out that he was an organ donor. It shouldn’t have surprised us. All of us have felt Bryan’s generosity throughout his life. The gift of life is the most amazing gesture and Bryan will live on not only through us and all the people he touched along the way, but from the lucky individuals that will benefit from Bryan making a decision to be a donor.

It was not lost on our family as we sat huddled around him, holding his hands, comforting him and each other, saying our last goodbye that five families were also sitting in a hospital room somewhere, comforting their loved one and each other while praying for a miracle that Bryan ultimately delivered for them. We are so proud of our Bryan for making this decision.

The Nebraska Organ Recovery team made the entire process very comforting. Their compassion, love, and respect when treating Bryan did not go unnoticed. We want to acknowledge every member of the Nebraska Organ Recovery team. Thank you for loving our Bryan.

If you are a donor, thank you. If you are not, please consider for a moment becoming one. We have seen first hand how amazing it feels on both sides of the coin. It is the greatest gift that one person can give another. We promise.

NASCAR Race Mom loves the sport of racing.  However reporting the death of a track warrior always leave a big sore spot in NRM's heart.  Condolences to all the friends, family and teammates of Bryan Clauson.

Bryan Clauson, a sprint-car specialist who made 26 career starts in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, died Sunday. He was 27 years old.

Clauson crashed Saturday night during a U.S. Auto Club (USAC) midget car race at the Belleville High Banks, a half-mile dirt track in Belleville, Kansas. Amateur video showed his open-wheel sprint car flipping in Turn 4, where it was struck by another vehicle.

Clauson was airlifted to a hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, where he was pronounced dead late Sunday. His death was confirmed on Monday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where a statement from the family was read.

"NASCAR extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Bryan Clauson, a passionate competitor whose love for racing fueled his unmatched positive spirit," NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer Steve O'Donnell said in a statement. "He was a dear friend to many in the racing community, and he was loved and respected by all who knew him. He touched the lives of so many in our motorsports family, and his warm presence and relentless enthusiasm will be missed."
