2024 NASCAR Rookies of the Year

2024 NASCAR Rookies of the Year

Carson Hocevar – Cup; Jesse Love – Xfinity; Layne Riggs - Trucks

National Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year (ROY) points system: Since the 2018 season, the Sunoco Rookie of the Year point system mirrors the points structure that awards the season-long championship, including stage points and playoff points, with the eventual Sunoco Rookie of the Year earning the most points throughout the season.

As is the case with the season-long points structure, a race win earns a Sunoco Rookie 40 points and five playoff points. A second-place finish earns a Sunoco Rookie 35 points; a third-place finish nets 34 points, and so on. A Sunoco Rookie who wins a stage earns 10 points and one playoff point.

The Sunoco Rookie of the Year points system is in all three NASCAR national series – the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Truck Series

Carson Hocevar – Cup ROY

Carson Hocevar – #NASCAR Cup ROY

Carson Hocevar, driver of Spire Motorsports’  No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, has been named the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year.

The Portage, Mich., native earned the honors on the strength of one top-five, six top-10 and 13 top-15 finishes. In his first full-season at the controls of the No. 77 Chevrolet, Hocevar brought home a career best third-place finish in the Cup Series September visit to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.\

“Being named Sunoco Rookie of the Year is special,” said Hocevar. “I got beat out for Rookie of the Year in the CRAFTSMAN Truck series, and I didn’t run in the Xfinity Series full time so to win the award in the NASCAR Cup Series is a huge accomplishment for our whole team. It definitely didn’t come easy. Josh (Berry) has won a bunch of Xfinity races, and the No. 4 team won tons of races and a championship with Rodney (Childers) and (Kevin) Harvick. We also had Zane (Smith) in contention, who raced for Spire Motorsports and has won several Truck Series races and a championship. It was a good group of accomplished drivers vying for it, and it means a lot to come out on top. We ran really strong at the end of the year and were able to pull away in terms of points. These last several weeks show our capabilities as a team.

“This award will be something that will live with me my whole career, and I’m proud to be known as the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year. There’s an elite list of guys who have won it, and many of them went on to win races and championships. The award is something you only have one shot at. You can never go back and try to win Rookie or the Year later down the line. It is the only thing like that in racing. It is cool to win something so significant this year, and the mission is now to get the No. 77 car to Victory Lane and in the playoffs in 2025.”

Jesse Love – Xfinity ROY

Jesse Love – #NASCAR Xfinity ROY

Nineteen year old Jesse Love, who drives the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing, made a name for himself already in his inaugural season at the Xfinity Series level. One win, seven top-five finishes, eighteen top-ten finishes, and five pole awards on his way to the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award.

“Jesse is an exceptionally talented racecar driver, having achieved championships in every series he has raced. Hard to believe he has been racing for 14 years, started at 5. Jesse is cool under pressure. He knows what he wants and how the car needs to feel. He races way above his years. We are looking forward to his second year in the Whelen car. The year 2025 promises to be thrilling. Jesse has demonstrated remarkable driving skill. His car control and adaptability indicate that he will keep progressing,” said RCR Xfinity Series Competition Director Danny Lawrence.

Love’s average finish in his first year of Xfinity Series competition has been an impeccable 11.97, which was better than some of the Championship 4 contenders.

While Love fell short of a Championship 4 appearance at Phoenix Raceway, he can say he made it farther than many other seasoned veterans have in the Xfinity Series.

“To get this far into the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs in our first year together is an accomplishment,” said Love.

Layne Riggs - Truck Series ROY

Layne Riggs - #NASCAR Truck Series ROY

Through 22 races, Front Row Motorsports Layne Riggs had mathematically clinched the 2024 Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors but was not officially awarded the honor until he finished the season in good standing, per the program guidelines and eligibility.

“Winning Rookie of the Year was a great testament to my team and what we were able to accomplish at the end of the season,” Riggs said. “The beginning of the year was a rocky and tough start, but we fought through the growing pains and that brought us together as a strong team. At the end of the year, we really showed what we had.”

Carson Hocevar Named 2024 #NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year

Zeigler Auto Group sponsored driver Carson Hocevar named 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year. Hocevar pilots the No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Spire Motorsports.

Zeigler Auto Group announced its partnership with Hocevar and Spire last December. Since then the organization has partnered with the Rookie of the Year for a series of races and philanthropic efforts in the Kalamazoo - Portage area.

"It has been an incredible experience to support Carson this year for a number of key races. This is a very well deserved accolade; and we are proud of what he represents on and off the track," said Aaron Zeigler, president and owner of Zeigler Auto Group.

The Portage, Mich., native earned the honors on the strength of one top-five, six top-10 and 13 top-15 finishes. In his first full-season at the controls of the No. 77 Chevrolet, Hocevar brought home a career best third-place finish in the Cup Series September visit to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International.

Hocevar impressed throughout his rookie campaign, accumulating 686 points and being the top finishing rookie in 15 races on NASCAR's senior circuit. He out-distanced his next closest competitor by a handsome 107-point advantage when the checkered flag fell on Sunday's season finale at Phoenix Raceway.

"Being named Sunoco Rookie of the Year is special," said Hocevar. "I got beat out for Rookie of the Year in the CRAFTSMAN Truck series, and I didn't run in the Xfinity Series full time so to win the award in the NASCAR Cup Series is a huge accomplishment for our whole team. It definitely didn't come easy. Josh (Berry) has won a bunch of Xfinity races, and the No. 4 team won tons of races and a championship with Rodney (Childers) and (Kevin) Harvick. We also had Zane (Smith) in contention, who raced for Spire Motorsport and has won several Truck Series races and a championship. It was a good group of accomplished drivers vying for it, and it means a lot to come out on top. We ran really strong at the end of the year and were able to pull away in terms of points. These last several weeks show our capabilities as a team.

"The award will be something that will live with me my whole career, and I'm proud to be known as the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year. There's an elite list of guys who have won it, and many of them went on to win races and championships. The award is something you only have one shot at. You can never go back and try to win Rookie or the Year later down the line. It is the only thing like that in racing. It is cool to win something so significant this year, and the mission is now to get the No. 77 car in the playoffs in 2025."

The 21-year-old made his NCS debut for Spire Motorsports on June 4, 2020 at World Wide Technology Raceway. In addition to his NCS debut, Hocevar made four NASCAR Xfinity Series starts for Spire Motorsports in 2023, with a pair of top-10 finishes coming in May at Darlington Raceway (sixth) and Charlotte Motor Speedway (eighth).

Hocevar was first paired with veteran crew chief Luke Lambert last season when he competed behind the wheel of the No. 42 machine in eight of the divisions final 10 races. He scored a then career-best 11th- place finish at the 2023 Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Lambert followed Hocevar to Spire Motorsports where he was chosen to lead the team's No. 77 efforts for the 2024 season.

"I am incredibly proud of the effort Carson (Hocevar) and the No. 77 team have put into the 2024 season," said Lambert. "Carson is a tremendous talent and that combined with his effort and dedication has led to solid performance on track, and continuous improvement throughout the season. I am honored to be a part of Spire Motorsports as we continue to progress as a NASCAR Cup Series team. Carson and the No. 77 team are committed to constant improvement and look forward to building on this rookie season in 2025."

Hocevar made his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) debut on August 1, 2019 at Eldora Speedway and collected four wins, one pole, 21 top-five and 33 top-10 finishes over his CRAFTSMAN Truck Series career. He finished 10th in points in 2021 and 2022 and earned a berth in the 2023 Championship 4, where he ultimately finished third in the season-ending championship point standings.

"It has been an exciting season watching Carson, Luke and the whole No. 77 team grow together," said Spire Motorsports president Doug Duchardt. "Carson's finishes have improved throughout the year and the team has been running competitively during the playoffs, racing door-to-door with the playoff contenders. We are proud of Carson and the No. 77 team for winning the NASCAR Cup Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award and I'm looking forward to seeing them continue to raise the bar next year."

Hocevar's accomplishment marks the first time a Chevrolet-backed driver has achieved the title since Daniel Hemric in 2019. He is the third Michigan-born driver to earn the honor, following in the footsteps of Erik Jones (2017) and Johnny Benson (1996.)

Daniel Dye to receive 2022 ARCA Menards Series Bounty Rookie Challenge Award

Daniel Dye to receive 2022 ARCA Menards Series Bounty Rookie Challenge Award

@danieldye43 finished second in the 2022 ARCA Menards Series standings

The 2022 ARCA Menards Series Bounty Rookie Challenge winner Daniel Dye will receive his award on Friday, February 17 in the lead-up to that evening’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

Dye will be joined by NASCAR Cup Series driver Chris Buescher, who won the ARCA rookie of the year award in 2011, the year before he earned the series championship.

Dye joins a distinguished list of former rookies of the year, dating back to Bill Granger in 1957. Since then, sixty-four others have earned the top rookie award including notables Charlie Glotzbach, former NASCAR Cup Series champion and Daytona 500 winner Benny Parsons, three-time series champion Dave Dayton, former series champions Lee Raymond and Bill Venturini, NASCAR Hall of Famer Davey Allison, ten-time series champion and all-time leading series winner Frank Kimmel, 2021 Daytona 500 winner Michael McDowell, NASCAR Cup Series stars Buescher and Alex Bowman, current NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series contender Hailey Deegan, and reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Ty Gibbs.

“First off, earning a Rookie of the Year honor in any level of sports is impressive, and to do it in this series where there’s so much young talent coming up through the ranks is a great accomplishment,” Buescher said. “If I think back to my time in the ARCA series, it was a fight to earn this trophy and ultimately the series title a year later. The things I learned very early on in my career have been invaluable in where I am today, and my congratulations goes out to Daniel on his success; I’m excited to see where the ARCA Series is headed in 2023.”

“The list of drivers who have been the rookie of the year in the ARCA Menards Series includes some of the most recognizable names in American stock car history,” said ARCA president Ron Drager. “We are proud of our long, rich history and the accomplishments of those who have made the ARCA Menards Series their racing home, and the drivers who have gone on to success in the NASCAR national touring series.

“Daniel Dye joins that exclusive club of drivers who have won the ARCA Menards Series Bounty Rookie of Year, and he did so in a season that saw him challenge for race wins and the overall series championship. His GMS Racing team, led by veteran crew chief Chad Bryant – who has guided Parker Kligerman, Dakoda Armstrong, Kyle Weatherman, and Dalton Sargeant to rookie of the year honors as well – was solid all year. We look forward to watching Daniel’s career flourish and grow in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and beyond in the coming years.”

The battle for the 2023 ARCA Menards Series Bounty Rookie Challenge kicks off on Saturday, February 18 in the 60th annual Daytona ARCA 200 at Daytona International Speedway. The race will be televised live on FS1 starting at 1:30 p.m. ET, and it will be broadcast on select affiliates of the MRN Radio network.

Corey Heim Jumps to Sunoco Rookie Standings Lead after Gateway

Corey Heim Jumps to Sunoco Rookie Standings Lead after Gateway

Corey Heim Jumps to Sunoco Rookie Standings Lead after Gateway

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings had a major shakeup this past weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway as Corey Heim jumped from third to first among rookies after his overtime-win in the Toyota 200.

Heim, driving part-time for Kyle Busch Motorsports, has managed to take the lead in the rookie standings having only ran six of the 11 total races this season. His control of the rookie title can also be attributed to his other win this season at Atlanta. He joins Zane Smith as the only other Camping World Truck Series driver with multiple wins this season, as well as being the lone rookie to make it to Victory Lane.

Heim has continued to show speed in his most recent string of starts, scoring three front-row starting positions, two top-five finishes and one win (Gateway). The rest of the rookie field will have a chance to catch up in the standings as Kyle Busch will be piloting the #51 KBM Toyota this weekend at Sonoma.

Prior to last week’s race, Lawless Alan held the lead in the Camping World Truck Series Sunoco Rookie standings. Alan, now sitting second in rookie points, drove the #45 team to their fifth top-20 finish this season, the most among full-time rookies. Being one of two rookies for Niece Motorsports, Alan will go to Sonoma looking to distance himself from teammate Dean Thompson, as well gain ground on an inactive Corey Heim. As for Thompson, he will look to build on a 14th-place finish at Gateway while also hoping to improve on being fourth in the rookie standings ladder. Thompson previously finished sixth in his lone other start at Sonoma during 2019’s ARCA Menard’s Series West race at the track.

Jack Wood, driver for GMS Racing and native of Looming, California, will be returning home to make headway in Sonoma after a 19th-place outing at Gateway last weekend. Sitting third in the series rookie standings, Wood will be coming back to a track he last raced at in 2019 in the ARCA Menards Series West where he finished 16th.

Blaine Perkins of CR7 Motorsports scored a DNF the last time the Truck Series went to a road course at COTA, running into transmission issues three laps into the race. His team hopes for Saturday to not be a repeat of those events as Perkins looks to enhance his fifth place standing among rookies after a 22nd-place finish at Gateway.

Berry Still Holding On

Josh Berry (#NASCAR Xfinity)

Josh Berry and Ty Gibbs have put on quite a show in the Xfinity Series during their rookie season. The two drivers, who are both running partial schedules, have consistently run up front – grabbing wins and making themselves a part of the mix. Last weekend at Watkins Glen was no different as Gibbs grabbed his third win in 10 starts. Berry didn’t compete at Watkins Glen.

But Berry has been able to hold off Gibbs in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings for several weeks. Berry has 397 points and six awards while Gibbs has seven awards but only 379 points. Ryan Vargas is in third with Jade Buford in fourth and Sam Mayer in fifth.

Gibbs has only competed in 10 of 20 races. He now has three wins, eight top fives and eight top 10s to his name. Gibbs will be back behind the wheel of the No. 54 Toyota this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course.

Hailie Deegan Caps History-Making Season With Sunoco Rookie Honors

Hailie Deegan Caps History-Making Season With Sunoco Rookie Honors
Hailie Deegan’s rookie season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West could best be summed up as “mission accomplished.”

Series West Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award. (Meg Oliphant/NASCAR)

Deegan just wrapped up her first season driving the Bill McAnally Racing No. 19 Mobil 1/NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota Camry in the West division of NASCAR’s top developmental series.

The 17-year-old from Temecula, California had a history-making season – becoming the first female driver to win a NASCAR K&N Pro Series race and first woman to win a pole award in the series. She also became the first woman to win the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series.

“This year has pretty much been a dream season for me,” said Deegan, a member of the NASCAR Next program, which spotlights NASCAR’s rising stars. “Everything that I wanted to accomplish, we accomplished.

“It’s been a really good learning year for me,” she said. “Everyone surrounding me, we’ve had tons of positive people and tons of positive results. This year was definitely a successful year.”

Deegan capped her season off by clinching the rookie title in the final race of the year at Kern County Raceway Park on Saturday.

“We ended up winning the Rookie of the Year, which is pretty cool,” she said. “It was kind of like my last goal for the year.”

In addition to taking the rookie award, Deegan finished fifth in the overall championship standings. She had one win, two poles, five top-five finishes, and 12 top-10 finishes in 14 races.

“It’s been exciting to watch Hailie’s development in the NASCAR K&N Series this year,” said team owner Bill McAnally. “She made a big step in graduating to this series, but she demonstrated that she was ready for it. It’s been great to see her succeed.”

Deegan started off the season with top-10 finishes in the first three races. She stepped things up in the next two races, with back-to-back top-five finishes at Southern California’s Orange Show Speedway and Colorado National Speedway, just north of Denver.

She led the contingent of BMR drivers with a seventh-place finish on the road course at California’s Sonoma Raceway and then scored her first podium finish, coming home in the runner-up spot at Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Oregon.

Deegan’s only subpar finishes of the season were the result of contact in the two NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combination races – at Iowa Speedway and at Gateway Motorsports Park. Sandwiched between the two combo events, she had a seventh-place finish at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. She captured the spotlight as the K&N West raced at the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where she won the pole award and finished second.

Deegan grabbed even bigger headlines at the next event at Idaho’s Meridian Speedway, using a bump-and-run move on the last lap to win the race. She followed that up with a seventh-place finish at All American Speedway in Roseville, California.

Deegan garnered her second pole award in the season finale at KCRP near Bakersfield, California and went on to finish sixth, after contact from another car in the final laps.

In addition to racing the full schedule of 14 K&N West events this year, Deegan also competed in four races in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East – racing at New Smyrna, Bristol, Memphis, and New Hampshire.

Hailie Deegan, driver of the No. 19 Mobil 1 / NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota, had a win, five top fives and 12 top 10s in 14 starts in her first year in the #NASCAR K&N Pro Series West.

Deegan, the daughter of legendary X-Games athlete Brian Deegan, won multiple championships in off-road racing – where she began her racing career at the age of 8. She transitioned to stock cars, racing in late models before making her debut this year in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series.
