Kraus Leads BMR Trio Headed To Combo Race

Annual K&N Pro Series East-West Event In Iowa

Derek Kraus will lead the charge as Bill McAnally Racing goes for a fifth consecutive win in the annual NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combination race at Iowa Speedway on Friday.

Teams from across the country will travel to the 7/8-mile track in Newton, Iowa for the Casey’s General Stores 150.

Todd Gilliland won the prestigious race for BMR in 2016 and 2017 – his two full seasons in the K&N West, in which he won back-to-back championships. Brandon McReynolds swept two combination events for BMR in 2015, the last year in which Iowa Speedway hosted two East-West races in a season. He was the first driver with multiple wins in the event.

Kraus, who took over BMR’s No. 16 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry after Gilliland graduated to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year, returns to Iowa after winning the pole and finishing 11th in last season’s East-West race.

The 16-year-old NASCAR Next driver from Stratford, Wisconsin is currently third in the K&N West championship standings – with two wins, five top-five, and six top-10 finishes in seven starts this year. He won the most recent K&N West race – at Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Oregon last month. This past weekend, in his first visit to New Hampshire Motor Speedway, he set a track record in winning the pole and had a fifth-place finish in K&N East action.

Cole Rouse

Cole Rouse – a 21-year-old from Fort Smith, Arkansas – returns to Iowa Speedway, where he finished 12th in the combination race in his rookie season in 2016.

Rouse is fourth in the championship standings, as he competes in his first season with BMR; driving the No. 99 NAPA Filters Toyota Camry. He has three top-five and six top-10 finishes in K&N West action this year – including a sixth-place finish at Roseburg. He finished 10th in the K&N East race at New Hampshire.

Hailie Deegan

Seventeen-year-old series rookie Hailie Deegan of Temecula, California will be competing in her first combination race at Iowa. A member of the NASCAR Next program that spotlights NASCAR’s rising stars, Deegan drives BMR’s No. 19 Mobil 1 / NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota Camry.

She leads in rookie points for the K&N West and is fifth in the overall championship standings – with three top-five and seven top-10 finishes. She had a career-best second-place finish at Roseburg and was 16th at New Hampshire.

A special VIP experience is planned for a group of NAPA guests at Iowa Speedway on Friday. Their visit, coordinated by Sales Manager Randy Judge of NAPA’s Des Moines Distribution Center, will take them behind-the-scenes with a tour of the NASCAR garage and a special meet-and-greet with BMR’s drivers. The guests will also have the opportunity to be present at the drivers meeting and attend the driver introductions.

Activities off the track continue after the race, with the NAPA AUTO PARTS Concert Series at Iowa Speedway featuring a performance by Dylan Scott.

The BMR drivers are slated to go on stage during the event.

This marks the fourth straight year for the NAPA Auto Parts Concert Series to be featured at the speedway.

The East-West combination race from Iowa is scheduled to be televised on NBCSN on Aug. 2 at 3 p.m. PT.

Since it’s opening race in 1990, New Hampshire Motor Speedway has long-served as one of the premier stages on the schedule for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

This weekend is no different.

Racing will kick off today with the fifth running of the All-Star Shootout for the Whelen Modified Tour. The twenty-car, thirty-five-lap special event will serve as a precursor to Saturday’s Eastern Oil & Propane 100.

Saturday’s racing will be capped off with the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East in the United Site Services 70.

The ‘United Site Services 70’ is scheduled for seventy (70) laps on the 1.058 mile paved track for 74.06 miles.

Since NASCAR lowered the minimum age to compete in the touring series in 2007, the K&N Pro Series East event at New Hampshire has been a defining moment on the resume of a number of rising stars. Joey Logano (2007), Ryan Truex (2010), Max Gresham (2011), Kyle Larson (2012) and William Byron (2015) all won at the “Magic Mile” en route to their series titles.

The maximum starting field for this event is thirty-six cars; with only twenty-two names on the entry list – everyone will race.

PRACTICE: Harrison Burton Continues Fast Pace at Bristol

Reigning NASCAR K&N Pro Series East champion Harrison Burton has been fast at Bristol Motor Speedway every time he’s been behind the wheel.

On Friday afternoon, that trend continued. The Huntersville, North Carolina native paced the field with a lap of 122.787 mph (15.627 seconds) around the World’s Fastest Half-Mile in the one and only practice session for Saturday’s Zombie Auto 150.

In two previous K&N Pro East starts at Bristol, Burton started on the pole both times (2016 and 2017). His engine expired in the 2016 event, ending his afternoon prematurely. He won the rain-shortened race last year.

In the season-opening race at New Smyrna, Burton started first and finished third.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular Noah Gragson was second fastest with a lap of 15.652 (122.591). In 2016, the Las Vegas, Nevada native started 14th and finished 12th in his only other K&N East start at Thunder Valley.

Tyler Dippel (15.664), Anthony Alfredo (15.668) and Brandon McReynolds (15.676) rounded out the top five when the 60-minute practice session concluded.

Two-time and reigning K&N Pro West champion Todd Gilliland, Cole Rouse, Spencer Davis, Tyler Ankrum and Derek Kraus completed the top 10.

The K&N Pro East will hit the track for group qualifying later on Friday at 6 p.m. ET, with the green flag for the Zombie Auto 150 scheduled to fly at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Gilliland and Burton Prepare for Final Showdown

NASCAR Next drivers Todd Gilliland and Harrison Burton will face off for the 2017 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship at Dover International Speedway on Friday, September 29 – the final showdown of the season.

Gilliland enters the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation 125 presented by Carl Deputy & Son Builders with an eight-point advantage over Burton. The 17-year-old, Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, native has all the confidence he needs as he looks to seal the deal and win his first K&N Pro Series East championship.

“It’s been a battle for the points lead and it’s nice to add a few points to that,” Gilliland said after a runner-up finish in the most recent race at New Jersey Motorsports Park. “I’m really confident about our Dover package. I was lucky enough to run the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race earlier this year and get some laps there. It’s going to be a huge race for us but I have confidence in everyone on our team.”

Both Gilliland and Burton competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Dover back in June. Burton, 16, finished 13th while Gilliland finished 20th. That run, along with his motivation, gives the Huntersville, North Carolina, driver assurance that he can still win the championship on Friday.

“It hasn't slipped away yet,” Burton proclaimed. “We’ve got one more race to run, we’ve got one more race to win. That’s the thing about this team is we never give up no matter what the circumstances. I’m going to prepare as best I can and hopefully have a fast racecar. If we can do that, we can do anything. I’m telling you, we are not out of this by any stretch of the imagination.”

Burton is also leaning on his father, Jeff Burton for advice. Burton, who is currently an analyst for NBC Sports NASCAR coverage, won a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at the Monster Mile back in 2006.

“You would be ignorant not to listen to a guy like my dad,” Burton explained. “He’s really smart about the sport and I feel like he was one of the better drivers out there. Especially at Dover, I feel like he was one of those guys who could go to Dover and kick butt. I’ve got to learn as much as I can from him, but I’ve got to learn from my past experiences too and use those in the future.”

Todd Gilliland assumed the points lead when he picked up a victory at Virginia's Langley Speedway back on September 4th. He extended his points lead at New Jersey by finishing second, one spot ahead of Burton.

Friday’s National Fallen Firefighters Foundation 125 presented by Carl Deputy & Son Builders, which will determine the championship, will get underway at 5 p.m. ET. Practice will be held at 8 a.m. ET and qualifying at 1 p.m. ET.

Gilliland Wins / Van Wieringen Impresses

NASCAR Race Mom (NRM) was bummed that she was not able to attend the K&N Pro Series East race yesterday. Not for the reason you might think. 

Sure watching Todd Gilliland manage his patience and tires in order to surge back to the lead of the race for the laps that counted would have been exciting to witness. Todd, who is working to make NASCAR history by winning the two NASCAR K&N Pro Series stock car titles – East and West – in the same year, made positive progress towards that ambition. He now leads in the East by six points over Harrison Burton and in the West by five points over teammate Chris Eggleston.

“I think we were all saving tires from second on back,” Gilliland said after the race. “Dad told me we were kind of in the line and when [Bassett] was trying to get away like that, we just had to be mentally tough and let him get out there. That’s always tough as a racecar driver but, in a 150 lap race, you’ve got to know when to let them go.” .

There are two East races and three West races remaining in the 2017 season. Quite a lot of pressure for the seventeen-year-old.

What NRM missed most, however, was the hard-charging drive by Dominique Van Wieringen. The Canadian qualified a mediocre twelfth out of the field of fourteen. It was her first race of the season. She had been sidelined for a lack of funding. I believe her opportunity to return to the K&N Pro Series stage came when she was asked to sub for Tyle Dippel, who was running an ARCA race the same night.

Dippel, a former winner in the series, had only managed a season’s best of fifth place in the ride. Nonetheless, it would appear that Dominique was aware of the importance of making the best of her unexpected break.

Van Wieringen  rallied from her “back of the pack” starting spot to finish on podium in third. Twice, on laps 126 and 140, she went to the outside in three-wide situations to gain two positions.

“I learned, when I started racing late models, that you’ve got to make the outside work and I was dead set determined to be the one that makes the outside work,” Van Wieringen stated. “I haven’t raced in over a year and I was worried, with our qualifying result, that we would be able to make our way up in the top-three so this is an exhilarating moment.”

Opinion: Dominique Van Wieringen has shown so much potential and talent. It is a shame that she cannot garner the funding necessary to remain on track. Hopefully a sponsor out there will take notice.

K&N Pro Series East Races Today

Burton and Gilliland Continue Championship Battle 

The K&N Pro Series East "Visit Hampton VA 150” at Langley will be run today. Originally scheduled for Saturday, September 2nd ; it was rescheduled “due to weather.” NASCAR Next drivers Harrison Burton and Todd Gilliland will enter the race separated by only four points in the championship standings!

Neither driver has competed with the series at Langley, however, unfamiliarity has not slowed either in 2017. Gilliland won at Michigan’s Berlin Raceway in his first K&N Pro Series East visit to the track, while Burton won seven days later at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in his first series race there.

The race delay worked well for Todd, who competed in the Camping World Truck Series events on Saturday and Sunday. He started the truck race from thirteenth and improve two spots for an eleventh place finish.
