Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Darlington Reminiscences

Bojangles' Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway

Darlington Raceway is one of the toughest tracks in NASCAR, especially for a rookie. However, Dale Jr.’s frustrations in his rookie season came from somewhere else. #Appreci88ion

"At Darlington, we have the throwback race weekend. It is something I was super excited about. It gives everyone the opportunity to remember the past. This year we are going to the run the car basically the rendition of the paint scheme we ran in the Xfinity Series in 1998 and 1999." – Dale Earnhardt Jr.

In 1998, Jr. was just a twenty-four year old rookie trying to make a name for himself. The 1998 NASCAR Xfinity Series season began on Saturday, February 14 and ended on Sunday, November 15. Dale Earnhardt Jr. racing for Dale Earnhardt, Inc., earned his first championship at season's end. Tony Eury, Sr. served as the team’s Crew Chief. They won seven races that year.

Throwback Scheme is so important to Dale Jr.

Earnhardt hopes he can give it a good run at the track ‘Too Tough To Tame;’ He’s never won at Darlington, but owns 10 top-10 finishes in 21 starts, with a career-best second coming in 2014.

“This scheme means a good deal to me and I hope we have as much success at Darlington as we had in this car in ’98/’99,” Earnhardt said.

“We almost won at Darlington in one of those races in (‘98) – we were door-to-door with Dick Trickle coming to the finish line and lost by a few feet. So, hopefully we can recreate some of that magic.” Dale Jr.
