Forbes’ ‘Women in Sports to Watch’ in 2019 - NASCAR's Hailie Deegan, Julie Giese

Julie Giese and Hailie Deegan earned their way onto the Forbes’ list of “Women In Sports To Watch” in 2019.

Ms. Giese

Julie Giese has been with the International Speedway Corporation (ISC) since 2001 when she joined Watkins Glen International as the director of public relations.

In October 2018, ISC announced that Julie Giese, Managing Director of Business Operations for ISC Design & Development, had been promoted to President of ISM Raceway.

Beginning in November 2018, Giese assumed oversight of promotion and operation of the all-new ISM Raceway. Giese’s first major event, the Can-Am 500, was part of the Raceway’s Opening Weekend on Nov. 9, 10 and 11 2018.

On what’s ahead in 2019: In 2019, we will look to showcase ISM Raceway as not only a motorsports venue, but as a world-class venue for entertainment as well. We look forward to working with organizations to host various types of new events at our newly modernized venue space that benefit the local Phoenix area. We’ll also continue to work on enhancing the guest experience at our NASCAR events to position ourselves as having the most immersive experience in all of motorsports.

In 2018, seventeen-year-young, Hailie Rochelle Deegan competed full-time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West and part-time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East, driving the No. 19 Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing.

In her rookie year, Deegan’s K&N Pro Series West stats include one record-breaking win (Meridian Speedway), five top-fives and twelve top-tens on the fourteen-race schedule. If that were not enough; Hailie also captured two pole awards and finished an impressive fifth in the point standings.

Hailie Deegan topped her History-Making 2018 Season With K&N Pro Series West Sunoco Rookie Honors and received the Autoweek Rising Star Award.

On what’s ahead in 2019: I just announced I’ll be running again in the K&N Pro Series West next year. I’m looking forward to battling for a championship. That’s something that’s going to take a lot of work, but I think we’ve already accomplished winning races. I think winning a championship is something that we could potentially do next year.

K&N Pro Series West Finale

Direction Bakersfield - Tale of Two Dereks!!!

That's it, it's the finale. This season in K&N Pro Series West has been very fast. With finally 14 races after the cancellation of the Spokane step, it was necessary to have zero problem and to be very regular to hope to obtain the title of champion.

And except for a huge disaster, and provided there are enough drivers involved (minimum 25 in the entry list), the title can hardly escape to Derek Thorn. He will not have been the most flamboyant on the track with 2 victories (like Kody Vanderwal), 175 laps led on 1872 possible. Only one pole ... But he will have been hyper constant and still in the top 10, still on the lead lap. With an excellent average finish of 3.0. It's experience more than the panache that will allow him on October 27 to obtain a second title of champion in West Series. But beware, this title is well deserved and Derek Thorn is a beautiful champion.

Derek Thorn - #6 Ford (Car Owner: Bob Bruncati)

It’s also a perfect combination between him and his owner Bob Bruncati and his crew chief Bill Sedgwick. Together they reiterate their feat of 2013. For Bob Bruncati, it will be the third title owner (Jason Bowles in 2009 and Derek Thorn in 2013). But far away of the 8 titles of BMR. For Bill Sedgwick, twice champion as a driver (1991 and 1992), it will be the 5th as crew chief (with Mike Duncan in 2004 and 2005, then Bowles 2009 and Thorn 2013). This will put him on par with Parky Nall (5 titles in the 60s) and it will be one more to equal the absolute record held by Richard Elder (6 titles). Congratulations to him, he enters the history of the NASCAR.

Derek Kraus - #16 Toyota (Car Owner: Mike Curb )

That said, personally, I’m a little disappointed because it’s not the "Derek" that I would have liked to see crowned 2018 West champion. Derek Kraus has known the opposite of Derek Thorn. He was incredible on track but lack of being regular. He leads the winner standings with 3 successes, poles with 5, laps led with 569. But he also suffered a crash in Las Vegas, a big mechanical problem in Iowa and finally victim of a collision in Roseville while he was still in the front of the pack at the time.

Luck. We could talk about it for hours. But without a little luck, difficult in motorsport to get the grail. We've seen it, for Derek, in the last two races in K&N Pro Series East. 2018 was not really a lucky year for Derek. This does not detract from his qualities. He demonstrated perfect control behind the wheel. A real mastery. Always impressive during his meteoric returns on the front lead as he makes his way through the pack after a pit stop or other reasons or problems.

Next year will be the last year with the current format for the K&N East and West series. NASCAR has bought ARCA, 2020 will mark a big change. For an old monkey like me, it will be the end of an era. A heartbreak for sure. I’m an eternal lover of the West Series. But wait to see, it may be the beginning of a brand new and beautiful adventure.

I have been wearing a beard for decades. But I'm ready to shave if Derek does not get a good ride for 2019.

So since I'm not in the secret of Gods ...

I formally ask Bill McAnally, for whom I have the greatest respect, but also the NAPA brand to give back the #16 to Derek in 2019 for him to win the title in K&N West. But I'm also asking David Gilliland and Bo LeMastus of DGR-Crosley to give him the #1 in K&N East to allow Derek to become the first driver to win the two K&N crowns the same year. Todd Gilliland had failed in the last race of East in 2017. Derek has the talent to get there and the bad luck will leave him alone. Believe me. Betting on Derek Kraus is an investment that will pay off. So to all who read this, share to the fullest, make your voice heard, express your desire to see Derek get the opportunity to become the champion he deserves to be.

Derek who is the master of Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, CA. In 3 participations here, he got a second place and two wins. Other drivers know they will have to outdo themselves if they want to visit Victory Lane instead of Derek Kraus.

Short Track Action

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) and Camping World Truck (NCWTS) Series will be in action at Martinsville Speedway this weekend. The NASCAR Xfinity Series is off.

MENCS heads to the first race of the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Playoffs. The NCWTS enters the first race in the Round of 6.

Also on Saturday, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West (KNWest) will finish their season at Kern County Raceway Park. While Derek Kraus has the most 2018 series (3), consistency has Derek Thorn in the lead by twenty-six points (26).

First Female Driver To Score Series Victory

Hailie Deegan made history on Saturday night by winning the NAPA AUTO PARTS Idaho 208 at Idaho’s Meridian Speedway and becoming the first female driver to win in the history of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series.

The 17-year-old NASCAR Next driver from Temecula, California was making just her 12th start in the West’s oldest stock car series – driving Bill McAnally Racing’s No. 19 Mobil 1 / NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota Camry.

“I was in bed last night thinking, ‘If it comes down, last lap, I’m in second, I’m a car length off of him, what am I going to do?'”, Deegan said. “And I found that Turn 1 spot. I knew what exactly I had to do there. I was doing it to some other people just getting right under them to get them a little light to get them, not wrecking loose, nothing crazy, but enough to just get a little under them and make the pass happen. We did that. I knew exactly what I had to do the last lap. I did it, we executed, and we made it happen.” Deegan edged out BMR teammate Cole Rouse with a last-lap pass to win by .329 seconds and lead a 1-2-3 finish for BMR. Derek Kraus, who led 190 laps in dominating the event ended up third.

“I was behind Cole and I knew we were faster,” Deegan said of the closing laps. “Cole was over driving a little bit and I knew I was faster if I hit my marks. The last few laps I hit my marks. I knew I had to give Cole a little push up in (Turn) 1 to get past him. I gave him a little nudge and got him a little loose and I got under him and we won.”

Deegan talked about being the first female driver to win in the series.

“It hasn’t even sunk in yet,” she said. “It’s going to be a crazy next couple of days.

“I’m so happy that Toyota and Bill took a chance on me this year,” she said. “They took a chance on me – Jack Irving and Toyota, NAPA, and Bill. They’re the ones who took the chance on me and it paid off.”

Deegan had become the first female to win a pole in the series, setting the fast mark in qualifying at the most recent event on the circuit – at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt Track earlier this month. Her previous best career finish was second, which she registered on two occasions this year – at Las Vegas (two weeks ago) and at Douglas County Speedway in Roseburg, Oregon in June. That tied the series’ record for highest finish by a woman in either the K&N Pro Series East or West.

With her win, Deegan regained the lead in rookie points for the series and moved to fifth in the overall championship standings. In 12 starts, she has one win, five top-five, and 10 top-10 series finishes.

Deegan has won multiple championships in off-road racing, where she began her racing career at the age of 8. Her racing resume also includes competition in late models and super late models.

The Meridian race is slated to be televised on NBCSN on Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. PT.

RAGBRAI to Make Pit Stop at Iowa Speedway

Cyclists invited to Ride The Track to benefit Iowa Speedway Cares

Thousands of bicyclists from around the world will pedal through Newton, Iowa on Wednesday, July 25. Newton has been chosen as an overnight stop for the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), which runs July 22-28, 2018. The City of Newton will serve as host city for the first time since Iowa Speedway was built in 2006.

RAGBRAI cyclists are invited to Ride The Track from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, July 25. For a $5 donation to Iowa Speedway Cares, the Speedway’s charitable arm, riders can take as many laps around the 7/8-mile oval as they would like.

Tomorrow, an estimated 20,000 cyclists, volunteers and sponsors will embark on a 59.1-mile ride from Ames to Newton that will include the Ride The Track event at Iowa Speedway.

“Of the 200-plus events we’ll host at Iowa Speedway this year, RAGBRAI might be one of the most unique,” said Iowa Speedway President David Hyatt. “The riders will get a chance to check their speed with a lap on the ‘Fastest Short Track on the Planet’ just two days before the stars of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series compete here to wrap up our 2018 race season.

“The City of Newton is, and has been, a tremendous supporter of Iowa Speedway since it was built. We are excited to see our community on a grand stage in an international spotlight.”

RAGBRAI started Sunday in the western town of Onawa, Iowa. The ride then moves through central Iowa, stopping in Ames on Tuesday and proceeding east to Newton. RAGBRAI is a non-competitive bicycle ride organized by The Des Moines Register and goes from west to east across the state of Iowa. Started in 1973, RAGBRAI is the oldest, largest and longest tour of its kind in the world.

The overnight stop for RAGBRAI will come at the same time teams, drivers and Iowa Speedway make final preparations for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Casey’s General Store 150 and NASCAR Xfinity Series U.S. Cellular 250 presented by The Rasmussen Group July 27-28.

BMR 16-Year-Olds Capture Spotlight At Roseburg

Kraus, Deegan Finish 1-2 In K&N West Action #NASCAR #KNWest

Two 16-year-old NASCAR Next drivers from Bill McAnally Racing claimed the top two spots in NASCAR K&N Pro Series West action at Douglas County Speedway on Saturday night, with Derek Kraus holding off Hailie Deegan in a two-lap dash to the finish to win the Clint Newell Toyota 150 presented by NAPA AUTO PARTS.

It marked the second win of the season and third career series victory for the Stratford, Wisconsin driver who pilots the No. 16 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry.

Deegan – a rookie from Temecula, California – grabbed her career-best runner-up finish in just her seventh career start, driving the No. 19 Mobil 1 / NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota Camry.

The third BMR driver, Cole Rouse, ran with the lead pack through much of the race; but was relegated to a sixth-place finish after contact from another car late in the event.

After starting second on the grid, Kraus jumped into the lead on Lap 21 and paced the field to the finish. It appeared he was going to cruise to victory, with a lead of more than six seconds as the laps began to wind down – but that lead evaporated with a string of four cautions late in the race. Although he was challenged on each restart, Kraus maintained command as the racing went into overtime.

“Our NAPA Toyota was really good,” Kraus said. “We were able to get out front with a pretty big lead by the middle part of the race. Then we were really good on the restarts there at the end and that was the difference. We were able to avoid spinning our tires and pulled away.”

Deegan started fourth and maintained the spot through the first half of the race. She was up to third by the midway point, as the BMR drivers ran 1-2-3. She moved to second a few laps later and then found herself on offense and defense during the restarts late in the race. Deegan crossed the finish line .493 seconds behind her teammate to take second, equaling the best finish by a female driver in the series.

“Our Toyota was one of the fastest cars on the track,” said Deegan, who said she changed her approach for this race – choosing to get more aggressive earlier in the event.

“In this race, I came to the realization that I need to start working on people earlier in the race and not ride around,” she said.

Kraus remains third in the championship standings, just nine points out of first. He has two wins, five top-five, and six top-10 finishes in seven races this season.

Rouse is fourth in the standings, 24 points out of the lead. The 20-year-old from Fort Smith, Arkansas has three top-five, and six top-10 finishes this year.

Deegan continues to lead the rookie field and is fifth in the overall standings, 27 points out of first. She has three top-five and seven top-10 finishes.

The BMR team was involved in a variety of activities leading up to Saturday’s race in Roseburg. The drivers made a visit to the Clint Newell Auto Group dealership, as well as an appearance at the NAPA AUTO PARTS Store in nearby Winston. BMR’s 2-seater No. 16 NAPA Toyota provided some thrilling laps around the speedway to selected guests. A NAPA customer kickoff dinner was held Friday night, and NAPA guests were hosted at a VIP Hospitality at the track on Saturday.

The Clint Newell Toyota 150 Presented by NAPA AUTO PARTS is slated to be televised on NBCSN on July 6 at 10 a.m. PT.

The next event on the series schedule will be the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East-West combination race at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa on July 27.

Don’t Forget the #NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Action Today

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West will make its 12th straight trip — and 16th overall — to the Colorado National Speedway, located just outside of Denver. Colorado. This has been the year of surprises, though, as Kody Vanderwal has used a pair of wins at Tucson Speedway to remain in title contention. Kody Vanderwal hails from nearby LaSalle, Colorado.

The maximum starting field is 22 cars, for each race, including Provisionals.

Qualifying groups will be determined by each vehicle’s overall fastest single lap from the official practice sessions.

The first 18 cars will secure starting positions based on the qualifying session. The remaining four spots will be awarded through the provisional process.

RIP - Danny Letner

January 3, 1928 - March 30, 2018

Danny Letner was a former NASCAR driver from Downey, CA. He competed in twenty-seven NASCAR Cup events in his career, spanning from 1951 to 1963.

Letner was quite successful with two cup wins (1954-Oakland & 1955-Tucson); and five top-five and ten top-ten finishes.

Letner also competed in the K&N Pro Series West from 1954 to 1957. In 1954, competing in only six of the schedule nine races, he still finished second in the points standings.

Running a full season the following year, Danny was crowned the Series Champion. 

Danny Letner, a West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame member, passed away March 30 at age ninety. He is survived by his wife, Billie, children and grandchildren.

The #NASCAR K&N Pro Series returns to NBCSN

NBC Sports Group and NASCAR are partnering to deliver NASCAR K&N Pro Series and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour coverage on NBCSN throughout the 2018 season. The organizations announced the full broadcast schedule, where fans can tune-in to see the next generation of drivers competing to make a name for themselves on the track.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West returns to NBCSN on Tuesday, March 20 at 11 p.m. ET from Kern County Raceway Park, followed by the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Myrtle Beach Speedway on Wednesday, March 21 at 6 p.m. ET.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East returns to NBCSN on Friday, April 20 at 1 a.m. ET from Bristol Motor Speedway.

NBCSN will air a total of 37 regional series events, culminating with championship races for all three series. Fans can tune-in to watch victors crowned in the K&N Pro Series East and NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on Oct. 11 and Oct. 18, respectively, followed by the K&N Pro Series West Championship on Nov. 1. NASCAR’s touring series will also be featured in regular highlights and reports on “NASCAR America,” weekdays at 5 p.m. ET on NBCSN.
