Camping World SRX Series at 5 Flags

 

When the idea of a Superstar Racing Experience touring series was first tossed around a few years ago, the immediate goal was focusing on iconic short-track speedways.

 

As any Five Flags Speedway loyalist will attest, a list of historic short tracks would be incomplete if it didn’t include the famed half-mile asphalt oval tucked away two miles off I-10, on Pine Forest Road.

Cut to today and the Camping World SRX Series is opening its second season Saturday night at Five Flags with an otherworldly car collection of NASCAR legends, Indianapolis 500 winners and champions from other professional motorsports series. The 12-car field includes present and future Hall of Famers, such as Bill Elliott, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, Paul Tracy and others.

 

“We were humbled when we received the call that we were being considered for one of the six events,” Five Flags General Manager Tim Bryant said. “There are hundreds of short tracks around the country that would jump at a chance to host an SRX event. We are over-the-top excited to put on a great show for Pensacola and showcase our city.”

 

The 75-lap SRX race brings a CBS TV production crew, which will broadcast the two-hour event live to a national audience beginning at 7 p.m. District 1 and Board of Escambia County Commissioners Chairman Jeff Bergosh believes the two-hour Saturday primetime spotlight will enhance the city’s profile and deliver a “shot in the arm financially from all the visitors who attend.”

 

“This Saturday's arrival of the SRX series in Pensacola at Five Flags Speedway will be an incredible experience for Escambia County and District 1,” Bergosh continued. “With renowned drivers, this will be like an all-star event. I look forward to attending Saturday's race.”

 

General admission is $35 with advanced reserved seats $40 and $45 for reserved seats on race day. Grandstands open at 11 a.m. Saturday with a brief SRX autograph session beginning at 2:15 p.m. approximately. There will be a fan zone under a tent behind the grandstands and cooling misters sprinkled throughout the facility for fans to beat the blistering June heat.

 

The Faith Chapel Outlaws are the appetizer to SRX’s main course and will vie for a winner-take-all $3,000 in their 50-lap feature. At least 25 Outlaws will qualify at 4 p.m. Saturday before dropping the green flag at 5. Just a few years old, the Outlaws continue to be among the most competitive series at Pensacola’s high banks. Pensacola veteran Logan Boyett leads Panama City teenager Timothy Watson by a single point in the season standings heading into the big-dollar 50 lapper.

 

Included among the dozen SRX stars is Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series stud Bubba Pollard. Pollard earned his spot by having the best average finish (third) at the Pepperjack Kennels Twin Blizzard weekend in early April. Pollard is a machine at Five Flags with 24 Late Model career victories.

 

“(SRX’s) idea of adding a local into the field was really smart,” Bryant said. “It allows some of our regular race fans to identify with one of their own among the best of the best. We felt, with so many deserving drivers, the only fair way to do it was let them earn the right into the SRX race and that’s what Bubba did. I know a legion of fans from Senoia, Ga., are coming down and he already has a huge fan base here in Pensacola.”

 

SRX has eight full-time drivers for the 2022 season—those include Andretti, Labonte, Stewart, Daytona 500 winners Ryan Newman and Michael Waltrip and 2012 Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay. Elliott, Kanaan and Ernie Francis Jr. all raced with SRX last season.

 

“The list of drivers that SRX is bringing is incredible,” Bryant said. “It is an honor for any racetrack to host such legendary drivers. We’ve been working every day to wash, paint and spruce up this 60-year-old racetrack to make a good presentation before a nationally television audience.”

Richard Petty, Bobby Labonte, Bill Elliott to Join FOX Sports Booth at Darlington

 

Three NASCAR Hall of Famers — Richard Petty, Bobby Labonte and Bill Elliott — will be FOX Sports’ on-air guests at Darlington Raceway.

 

FOX Sports will have a trio of Hall of Famers assisting its coverage of next weekend’s NASCAR Throwback Weekend at Darlington Raceway.

The network announced during Sunday’s Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway that Richard Petty, Bobby Labonte and Bill Elliott will join the booth for next weekend’s Goodyear 400 (Sunday, 3:30 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM) at Darlington Raceway. Petty is set to join the broadcast during Stage 1, Labonte will be a guest in Stage 2, and Elliott will slot alongside lead announcer Mike Joy and analyst Clint Bowyer in Stage 3.

FOX Sports announced the star-studded booth lineup during Stage 1 of the DuraMAX Drydene 400 at Dover Motor Speedway (set to resume at noon ET on Monday on FS1).

 

All three are former Darlington winners. Elliott was a five-time winner at the historic 1.366-mile track, including three Southern 500 victories and a season sweep of its events in 1985. Petty won there three times, claiming the Southern 500 trophy as part of his 1967 sweep. Labonte has one Darlington win, securing the Southern 500 laurels in 2000.

Fury chassis - designed by Ray Evernham and custom-built. The SRX team will handle final assembly and maintenance. The intent is to showcase driver ability.

NASCAR legends Tony Stewart, Darrell Waltrip and Bill Elliott, current NASCAR superstar Ryan Newman, WWE wrestling champion Bill Goldberg, Kelley Earnhardt, sister of NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-owner of JR Motorsport, former MillerCoors Chairman Pete Coors, and Bass Pro Shops Founder Johnny Morris are among the high-profile athletes, celebrities, business titans and philanthropists who are spending part of their regular day in a wheelchair as part of the Darrell Gwynn Wheelchair Challenge. The challenge, benefitting the Darrell Gwynn Chapter of The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, is the brainchild of Darrell Gwynn, the legendary drag racing champion who was paralyzed in a practice run 30 years ago, as a way to commemorate the 30th anniversary of both his accident and the Americans with Disabilities Act, as well as National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month in September. 

 

The Wheelchair Challenge asks participants to sit in the “Hot Seat” and experience a day in the life of someone who is wheelchair bound. Each of the first group of nearly two dozen participants has agreed to donate a minimum of $10,000 to the cause, which is an initiative of the Darrell Gwynn Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund, and then challenge family members, friends, colleagues, and business associates to do the same.

“The Wheelchair Challenge is a unique way to honor the 30th Anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act and National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, while raising funds to help find a cure for paralysis,” said Darrell Gwynn. “When some of my close friends asked me how to also commemorate the 30th anniversary of my accident, I said to them, “how about sitting in the hot seat...how about spending some time in a wheelchair so that you might get a glimpse of what those of us in wheelchairs deal with day to day, while also providing support so that someday others with spinal cord injuries will be able to get out of their chairs and walk again.

 

Everyone I asked immediately said, Yes!”



Added Marc Buoniconti, president of the Buoniconti Fund who was, himself, paralyzed in a college football game 35 years ago, “The idea is to convey how it feels to lose, temporarily, a key function nearly everyone takes for granted – mobility and get the public at large to understand the challenges we face on a daily basis. This has been my reality for 35 years and Darrell’s for more than 30 years, and millions of others around the world live it daily. It is our hope that this effort will get people to understand a little bit more about the challenges millions face each day.”

 

Considered one of the 50 greatest racers of all-time, Darrell Gwynn was a world champion drag racer in the 1980s before his devastating practice run accident resulted in his paralysis. Ironically, Darrell was an early Miami Project supporter, even before his paralyzing injury. He proudly displayed the Miami Project logo on his car and donated a portion of his winnings after each race. In 2015, he formally joined the team and began to focus all his efforts into his role as the Director of the Darrell Gwynn Quality of Life Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund.

 

The Buoniconti Fund is the fundraising arm of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Based in the Lois Pope LIFE Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the fund was created by the now late Hall of Fame football player Nick Buoniconti after Marc’s accident to raise funds to find a cure and to provide cutting-edge treatments for spinal cord injuries.

History of Michigan International Speedway (MIS)

Celebrating 50 Years of Memories 

The track is nestled on more than 1,400-plus acres in the Irish Hills of southeastern Michigan. Groundbreaking took place on September 28, 1967. Over 2.5 million yards of dirt were moved to form the D-shaped oval designed by Charles Moneypenny, who previously designed the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. The original layout included infield and exterior roads, which could be combined to form a single 3.1-mile interior/exterior road course or divided into separate 1.9-mile interior/exterior road courses. 

The road courses were designed by Formula One great Stirling Moss and are still used on a limited basis for passenger car testing by area law enforcement agencies. The last interior road course race was held in 1984, and the last time the exterior road course was used was in 1973.

THE LOPATIN ERA

The prime mover in the venture was Lawrence H. LoPatin, a Detroit-area land developer who built the speedway at an estimated cost of $4-6 million. The saucer-shaped, 18-degree banking provided exciting racing right from the start. The Inaugural Race took place on October 13, 1968. The 250-mile Indy-style event posted a purse second at the time only to the Indianapolis 500. Ronnie Bucknum collected $20,088 as the first driver to take the checkered flag.

Cale Yarborough won the first NASCAR race at the speedway on June 15, 1969, in a thrilling duel with LeeRoy Yarbrough. The two drivers battled door-to-door for most of the final 150 laps. On their final circuit, they touched twice-entering turn one, with Yarbrough brushing the outside wall. They then drafted down the back straight, and through turn three. But while coming out of the final turn, LeeRoy Yarbrough spun and crashed just 300 yards from the finish line, handing the victory to Yarborough.

Since then, MIS has hosted a number of historic races and many legendary drivers. Richard Petty, Mark Donohue, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, Gordon Johncock, Emerson Fittipaldi, Al Unser, Bobby Allison, Buddy Baker, Neil Bonnett, David Pearson, Davey Allison, Rick Mears, Dale Earnhardt, Buddy Rice, Alex Zanardi and Jeff Gordon all have celebrated wins in Victory Circle at Michigan International Speedway. MIS has honored these drivers and all of its past champions in the Walk of Champions area in the AAA Motorsports Fan Plaza.

LoPatin has been called a visionary and a man well ahead of his time. In an era well before motorsports became part of mainstream America, he dreamed of owning speedways in Michigan, Georgia, Texas, California and New Jersey - all hot spots for speedways today. LoPatin selected the land MIS sits on today for its proximity not only to Detroit, the Motor City Capital of the World, but to Chicago, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Canada and the entire Midwest.

If LoPatin and his American Raceways, Inc.(ARI), were guilty of anything, it was trying to do too much, too fast. While Michigan International Speedway has always been a profitable venture, other ARI speedways were a drain on the company's budget, and ultimately, ARI went bankrupt. In 1971, the company was forced to seek protection under bankruptcy laws, allowing the track to maintain it's racing and testing schedules. In 1972, ARI went into receivership.

THE PENSKE ERA

That's when another visionary - entrepreneur and racer Roger Penske - picked up on LoPatin's dream.

In 1973 - when the oil crisis and rising gas prices threatened all of racing - Penske envisioned turning MIS into a premier motorsports facility. After purchasing the deed to Michigan International Speedway off the Lenawee County courthouse steps for an estimated $2 million, Penske went right to work to improve the speedway to his standards. He invested millions of dollars on one capital improvement project after another with a goal of making Michigan International Speedway one of the best speedways in the world.

During Penske's ownership, the grandstands were expanded from 25,000 to over 125,000 seats, and numerous buildings were added to the property, including three garages, 28 pit terrace suites, an administration building, two ticket offices, a maintenance building, a warehouse, a sign shop, an entertainment shop, a Competition Tire building, and a Motorsports International building.

For over 25 years, Penske invested in Michigan International Speedway, long after the track's reputation was everything - and more - than he imagined it could be. He even added two racing-related businesses on the Speedway grounds - CompTire and Motorsports International. Penske later rebuilt Nazareth Speedway in Pennsylvania using the same formula s he did for Michigan - resurrecting a track out of bankruptcy. In 1997, Penske took his speedways and racing-related businesses public, forming Penske Motorsports, Inc. That same year the company built California Speedway and purchased 45 percent of Homestead-Miami Speedway. In 1998 it added North Carolina Speedway to its portfolio. 

THE ISC ERA

In July of 1999, Penske Motorsports, Inc. was purchased by the country's leader of motorsports entertainment - International Speedway Corp. ISC was founded by another visionary - Bill France - who built the world-famous Daytona International Speedway and founded NASCAR, the country's most popular racing series. ISC now owns 12 different motorsports venues, including former Penske speedways plus Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Darlington Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Richmond International Raceway, Watkins Glen, Phoenix International Raceway, Martinsville Speedway, Kansas Speedway and Chicagoland Speedway.

In August of 2000, the Speedway unveiled a new logo and announced it would add the "International" back to its name, which had been changed to Michigan Speedway in 1996 to align itself with three other Penske-owned facilities (California, Nazareth and North Carolina). Today, Michigan International Speedway is considered one of the country's premier racing facilities, and yet, it still focuses on constant improvements.

In June 2010, MIS unveiled its new suite/media center building along pit road, which features state-of-the-art accommodations for its suite customers and visiting media members.

Elliott and Waltrip added to MIS Charity Dinner presented by Consumers Energy

Racing legends will share their favorite stories at the MIS Charity Dinner presented by Consumers Energy on Saturday, June 9 at 6 p.m. NASCAR Hall of Famers Bill Elliott and Darrell Waltrip have been added to the Q&A session lineup.

They will be joined by three fellow NASCAR Hall of Famers in Dale Inman, Rusty Wallace and Leonard Wood. These five will tell their favorite Michigan International Speedway and racing stories during a special evening.

The inaugural Charity Dinner presented by Consumers Energy will start at 6 p.m. in the 50 Years of Racing Exhibit presented by Consumers Energy in the fan plaza. The event will feature a strolling dinner, dessert and drink stations, live and silent auctions, music, a photo booth and so much more. It will take place during the FireKeepers Casino 400 weekend allowing fans to watch nonstop racing on track with the LTi Printing 250 and a unique racing experience that evening.

“The Charity Dinner is great event for our fans to hear stories from five racers who enjoyed so much success on the track,” track President Rick Brenner said. “We are excited to add Bill Elliott and Darrell Waltrip to the Q&A lineup on Saturday. These five NASCAR Hall of Famers will make this a must attend event and help us raise money for charity.”

Elliott dominated at Michigan International Speedway in the 1980s in the NASCAR Cup Series. He recorded seven wins on the two-mile oval from 1984 – 89. He produced those victories in 12 races, including four straight in 1985 – 86. Elliott also started on the pole six times in those same 12 races. The 2015 NASCAR Hall of Famer finished his racing career with 44 wins and 55 poles in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Waltrip made 48 starts at the high-speed two-mile during his career. He posted two victories at Michigan International Speedway, recording wins in the 1984 Champion Spark Plug 400 and the 1977 Champion Spark Plug 400. The 2012 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee finished his illustrious career with 84 wins and 59 poles. His 84 victories are tied for third in NASCAR history.

Donations will go towards gas cards, bus tokens, food cards, clothing, utility assistance, eyeglasses, dentures, home health safety items and other essential support for patients and caregivers.

Chase won one of the most prestigious short track races in the country at the 44th Annual Snowball Derby super late model race in Pensacola, Fla. The Snowball Derby is a 300-lap super late model stock car automobile race held annually at the half-mile Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola.

First K&N Pro Cup Series Win

At age 15, Chase won his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series race of his career after taking the lead on lap 145 at Iowa Speedway. He stayed out front over the last five laps of the race and survived a green-white-checkered flag finish that extended the race to 154 laps.

World Crown 300 Victory

Chase Elliott recorded his third major super late model victory in the 29th annual World Crown 300 super late model race at Gresham Motorsports in Georgia. In front of friends and family at his local home track, the 16-year-old driver dominated all night in his No. 9 Aaron’s Dream Machine/Hendrickcars.com Chevrolet and won.

Back to Back Nationwide Series Wins

Chase followed up his first career NASCAR Nationwide Series win with his first back-to-back win the following race weekend at Darlington Raceway. Chase started sixth with three laps to go and executed a last-lap pass of Elliott Sadler to win the VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero 200, thus, becoming the youngest driver to win at Darlington Raceway since it opened in 1950.

“Darlington has always been my favorite place to watch a race,” Chase said. “Just to be a part of this race is unbelievable. To win this thing is a day I’ll never forget.”

A week out from the end of the NASCAR Nationwide Series season at Phoenix Raceway, Chase became the youngest champion in NASCAR national series history. In doing so, Chase became the first rookie to wear the Nationwide Series crown since the circuit’s infancy. And he also followed his father’s footsteps to become part of just the fifth father-son duo to claim a NASCAR national series title.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Debut

At age 19, Chase made his premier series debut for Hendrick Motorsports at Martinsville Speedway aboard the #25 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet. Chase started 27th and finished 38th.

“This is a different ballgame,” Chase said afterwards. “These guys are here in the Sprint Cup Series for a reason, and I’ve got some work to do.” Despite the self-critique, Chase made gains as the day improved after being involved in multiple early incidents.

Daytona 500 Pole

In his debut aboard the #24 car vacated by the retiring Jeff Gordon, Chase won the pole for his first-ever Daytona 500 with a top speed of 196.314 mph. Starting at the front of the grid, Chase’s day the next Sunday came to an early conclusion on lap 20 when he was involved in a multi-car incident. Chase would later return to the track to finish 37th, running 160 of 200 laps.

Chase for the Sprint Cup Qualifier

In a clutch performance at Richmond International Raceway, Chase clinched his berth in the 2016 Chase for the Sprint Cup, becoming only the third-ever rookie to make the playoff’s field. Chase did so by finishing the regular season in placed tenth in the driver points standings – a culmination of 26 points-paying events in which he earned an impressive 13 top-10 finishes and five top-five finishes.

Chase Elliott was named the 2016 Sunoco Rookie of the Year in the Sprint Cup Series after finishing the season 10th in the driver standings, recording two poles (Daytona 500, Talladega I), 10 top-5’s and 17 top-10’s. He led 358 laps and became the third rookie to ever qualify for the Chase for the Sprint Cup playoffs.

Consecutive Daytona 500 Pole Winner

Chase Elliott claimed his second consecutive Daytona 500 pole with a 46.663 sec. split to narrowly outpace his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. (46.665 sec.) on Feb. 19, 2017 at Daytona International Speedway. Chase became the first driver to win back-to-back Daytona 500 poles since Ken Schrader took three straight from 1988 to 1990.

NASCAR Playoffs Qualifier

At Richmond, Chase clinched his berth in a second-consecutive NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs. Though he entered the postseason without a win, he entered the playoffs seeded as the No. 10 driver thanks to six playoff points earned via two stage wins. Through Richmond, he earned a 14 top-10 finishes and six top-five finishes, an improvement from his rookie season the year before.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Schedule (#MENCS #NCWTS)

This weekend should prove exciting. There have been 32 Monster Energy All-Star Races. The first Monster Energy All-Star Race was in 1985 and held at Charlotte Motor Speedway – won by NASCAR Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip (Buick). Thirty-One of the Monster Energy All-Star Races have been held at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 1986, the event was held at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and won by Bill Elliott. The 1986 season was also the first year for what is now known as the Monster Energy Open.

The Monster Energy Open (6 p.m. ET on FS1) will occur prior to the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race on Saturday. It includes three stages (20 laps/20 laps/10 laps). The winner of each stage earns a spot in the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star race. The Monster Energy Open field will be set by two rounds of traditional knockout qualifying.

NASCAR will travel to Lincoln, Alabama for a doubleheader at Talladega Superspeedway this weekend with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Sprint Cup Series. The Xfinity Series is off and will return to action on November 5th at the Texas Motor Speedway.

Talladega Superspeedway, formerly known as Alabama International Motor Speedway (AIMS) opened for racing in 1969. The stands currently capacity are 78 000 seats.

The track is tri-oval shaped and is 4.28 km (2.666 mile) long. Surface is paved with four turns. Banking in turns are 33°, frontstretch 16.5° and backstretch 2°.

Track record, for NASCAR Series, is held by Bill Elliott with 212.809 mph (44.998 sec.) in April 30, 1987.  Elliott is the father to Cup Chase Driver - Chase Elliott.

Watch the video below as eleven-year-old Chase Elliott explains his weighted outlook. Chase is also show interviewing drivers he is now competing against, soon-to-retire Tony “Smoke” Stewart, and six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson.

Chase Elliott continues to impress. In the Sprint Cup Series this year, he can boast of two poles, six top-five and eleven top-ten finishes. The twenty-year-old also earned a win in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Amazing, the young rookie is currently eleventh in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Driver Points, between Jimmie Johnson who sits eights and Smoke, who after missing eight races is in twenty-seventh.

2015 NMPA Sprint Most Popular Driver Award Voting Opens September 6th

The National Motorsports Press Association and Sprint are pleased to announce that voting for the 2015 NMPA Sprint Most Popular Driver award will open Sunday, September 6.

The NMPA Sprint Most Popular Driver award is the only major NASCAR award determined solely by fan vote. The voting period will open at 12:01 a.m. ET Sunday and run through 11:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, November 22. Fans can visit www.mostpopulardriver.com to cast their vote for this year’s award. Votes will also be received via the NASCAR Mobile application.

Since the award’s inception in 1953, 19 drivers have won the award. NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott has won the award more than any other driver (16 times). Dale Earnhardt Jr. has won it the last 12 years in a row.

Voting is limited to one vote per person per email address per day. Fans are encouraged to share their votes on Facebook and Twitter. The official Twitter hashtag for the NMPA Sprint Most Popular Driver Award is #SprintMPD.

Eligible drivers for the award are those who have declared to compete for the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.

“The Most Popular Driver Award is one of the NMPA’s most significant awards, and I’m very pleased to partner with Sprint again this year,” said NMPA President Brian Nelson. “We expect the 2015 vote to be one of the biggest yet.”

The winner of this year’s award will be announced during NBCSN’s broadcast of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards on Dec. 4 in Las Vegas. A $10,000 donation will be made to the winning driver’s charity of choice.

The Most Popular Driver award program is one of the longest-running awards presented each year by the National Motorsports Press Association.

There was rhyme – “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville.” And there was reason – a premier series championship, enough wins to put him in the top 20 all time and the adulation of millions of fans.

In a 37-year driving career, Bill Elliott’s compiled a list of accolades that put him near the top of a number of NASCAR’s all-time lists. His 44 wins rank 16th all time and his 55 poles rank eighth. But, of course, his most prestigious accomplishment came in 1988 when he won the NASCAR premier series championship with six wins, 15 top fives and 22 top 10s in 29 races.

All that, combined with an affable demeanor, endeared him to fans. Fans adored him – and that adoration led to a record 16 Most Popular Driver Awards. Elliott returned that love with big stage success – and lots of it.

He won the Daytona 500 twice and the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway three times. And in 1985, he won both of those along with the Winston 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, earning him the “Winston Million” – a $1 million bonus for winning those three of four marquee events.

The #NASCAR Induction Ceremony is Approaching

 Class of 2015 Induction Ceremony Draws Near

Each year five legends are inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Tickets are still available for the Class of 2015 Induction Ceremony to be held on Friday, January 30. Highlighting the event is the official induction of Bill Elliott, Fred Lorenzen, Wendell Scott, Joe Weatherly and Rex White.

Drivers, celebrities and legends of the sport will take the stage to usher a new class into the Hall during this premier celebration of ultimate recognition. Tickets start at $45 and can be purchased online. A new Hall of Honor exhibit showcasing each of the inductees with stock cars and personal memorabilia will also be unveiled during induction weekend.

After a fifth place finish, Eighteen-Year-Old William Clyde Elliott II, more widely known as Chase Elliott, left the Phoenix International Raceway as NASCAR's Youngest National Series Champion. The son of 1988 Winston Cup Series champion Bill Elliott and Cindy Elliott also made history as the first rookie to win a NASCAR national series championship.

Chase's Father had not expected such a remarkable season.  “Absolutely no way,” Bill reported. “To be able to set foot in his first Nationwide car in January this year, to be here at the end of November as a Nationwide champion, it’s an incredible feat, not only for him but for the team.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., co-owner of Elliott's JR Motorsports race team, has said that his driver is likely to run another full season on NASCAR's No. 2 circuit next year. However, Hendrick, also a co-owner at JRM, sounded as if a few premier series starts would also be sprinkled into that mix.
