Camping World SRX Series at 5 Flags

Camping World SRX Series at 5 Flags

Camping World SRX Series at 5 Flags

When the idea of a Superstar Racing Experience touring series was first tossed around a few years ago, the immediate goal was focusing on iconic short-track speedways.

As any Five Flags Speedway loyalist will attest, a list of historic short tracks would be incomplete if it didn’t include the famed half-mile asphalt oval tucked away two miles off I-10, on Pine Forest Road.

Cut to today and the Camping World SRX Series is opening its second season Saturday night at Five Flags with an otherworldly car collection of NASCAR legends, Indianapolis 500 winners and champions from other professional motorsports series. The 12-car field includes present and future Hall of Famers, such as Bill Elliott, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, Paul Tracy and others.

“We were humbled when we received the call that we were being considered for one of the six events,” Five Flags General Manager Tim Bryant said. “There are hundreds of short tracks around the country that would jump at a chance to host an SRX event. We are over-the-top excited to put on a great show for Pensacola and showcase our city.”

The 75-lap SRX race brings a CBS TV production crew, which will broadcast the two-hour event live to a national audience beginning at 7 p.m. District 1 and Board of Escambia County Commissioners Chairman Jeff Bergosh believes the two-hour Saturday primetime spotlight will enhance the city’s profile and deliver a “shot in the arm financially from all the visitors who attend.”

“This Saturday's arrival of the SRX series in Pensacola at Five Flags Speedway will be an incredible experience for Escambia County and District 1,” Bergosh continued. “With renowned drivers, this will be like an all-star event. I look forward to attending Saturday's race.”

General admission is $35 with advanced reserved seats $40 and $45 for reserved seats on race day. Grandstands open at 11 a.m. Saturday with a brief SRX autograph session beginning at 2:15 p.m. approximately. There will be a fan zone under a tent behind the grandstands and cooling misters sprinkled throughout the facility for fans to beat the blistering June heat.

The Faith Chapel Outlaws are the appetizer to SRX’s main course and will vie for a winner-take-all $3,000 in their 50-lap feature. At least 25 Outlaws will qualify at 4 p.m. Saturday before dropping the green flag at 5. Just a few years old, the Outlaws continue to be among the most competitive series at Pensacola’s high banks. Pensacola veteran Logan Boyett leads Panama City teenager Timothy Watson by a single point in the season standings heading into the big-dollar 50 lapper.

Included among the dozen SRX stars is Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series stud Bubba Pollard. Pollard earned his spot by having the best average finish (third) at the Pepperjack Kennels Twin Blizzard weekend in early April. Pollard is a machine at Five Flags with 24 Late Model career victories.

“(SRX’s) idea of adding a local into the field was really smart,” Bryant said. “It allows some of our regular race fans to identify with one of their own among the best of the best. We felt, with so many deserving drivers, the only fair way to do it was let them earn the right into the SRX race and that’s what Bubba did. I know a legion of fans from Senoia, Ga., are coming down and he already has a huge fan base here in Pensacola.”

SRX has eight full-time drivers for the 2022 season—those include Andretti, Labonte, Stewart, Daytona 500 winners Ryan Newman and Michael Waltrip and 2012 Indianapolis 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay. Elliott, Kanaan and Ernie Francis Jr. all raced with SRX last season.

“The list of drivers that SRX is bringing is incredible,” Bryant said. “It is an honor for any racetrack to host such legendary drivers. We’ve been working every day to wash, paint and spruce up this 60-year-old racetrack to make a good presentation before a nationally television audience.”

Aric Almirola Shakes Up #NASCAR Cup Playoff Standings With Unexpected Win at New Hampshire

Aric Almirola Shakes Up #NASCAR Cup Playoff Standings With Unexpected Win at New Hampshire

With a stunning victory in Sunday’s Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Aric Almirola sent shock waves through the NASCAR Cup Series’ Playoff standings.

With hard-charging Christopher Bell closing behind him, Almirola crossed the finish line at the 1.058-mile track .657 seconds ahead of the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to win the third race of his career and give Stewart-Haas Racing its first ostensible Playoff berth of the 2021 campaign.

“This is by far one of my favorite race tracks,” an elated Almirola said after taking the checkered flag. “I love coming up to the New England area and racing. I love this race track. I had this race won a couple of years ago, and I gave it away—I lost it. And I am so glad to win a race here with this race team.

“It’s so good, man. We’ve been through so much, and I just stood the test. Everybody has just been working so hard… There’ve been so many people who have continued to support us through the crappiest year ever. Man, this feels so good for them. My pit crew did a phenomenal job on pit road. There’s no doubt we’ve struggled, but guess what? We’re going Playoff racing.”

Christopher Bell Wins Third Straight Xfinity Race at New Hampshire

Christopher Bell Wins Third Straight Xfinity Race at New Hampshire

Kyle Busch had used up his eligibility for this year in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Ty Gibbs had the week off. But the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota they have driven to a combined seven victories this season was still around—much to the chagrin of the series regulars.

Competing in the Xfinity Series for the first time since he finished third in the final standings in 2019, Christopher Bell led 151 of 200 laps, swept the first two stages and won Saturday’s Ambetter Get Vaccinated 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The victory was Bell’s third straight at the 1.058-mile track and the 17th of his career. It was the sixth straight win for Joe Gibbs Racing at New Hampshire, which did not host an Xfinity Series race last year because of schedule changes necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic.

“What I’ve got figured out is I’ve got really, really fast race cars to drive,” said Bell, who started 14th and took the lead for the first time on Lap 44—one circuit before the end of the first stage. “I just love being here with Joe Gibbs Racing. All these Supras I’ve for the last three times I’ve been here have been amazing.

“Hopefully, the Camry is just a good tomorrow (in the NASCAR Cup Series race), but it just feels good to win.”

Daniel Dye Wins First ARCA Menards Series Race in Dominating Fashion

The Ty Gibbs and Corey Heim party of 2021 in the ARCA Menards Series ended Saturday night at Berlin Raceway.

Daniel Dye became the series’ third winner in the 10th race of the season. And he did so in dominating fashion. The 17-year-old rookie started on the General Tire Pole and led all but two laps of the Zinsser SmartCoat 200 for his first victory in just his second ARCA Menards Series start.

Heim and Gibbs, who rank first and second in championship points, respectively, had won all nine races in the series this year prior to the GMS Racing driver’s triumph on the 7/16-mile paved oval.

Chase Elliott Wins Camping World SRX Season Finale

Chase Elliott Wins Camping World SRX Season Finale

Reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott held off three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart to take the victory in the Camping World SRX Series season finale Saturday night at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.

Elliott crossed the stripe .439 of a second ahead of Stewart after battling his father, Bill, for much of the 77-lap race around the .596-mile oval in Music City.

“I had a ball. I got to race against two of my heroes,” Chase said. “I got to race against Dad there throughout the race and those are moments I will cherish forever. Just super thankful to be here.”

“Man, I tell you what, it was a lot of fun. I knew the way the tires were on these cars and the way Chase manages his stuff, he was going to be hard to beat. I know he didn’t have the best car, but he knows how to get it to the end.” Bragged proud father, Bill Elliott

NASCAR / ARCA / SRX Race Weekend Recap

#NASCAR / #ARCA / #SRX Race Weekend Recap

Winners: Kurt Busch (Cup); Kyle Busch (Xfinity); Austin Hill (Trucks) Corey Heim (ARCA West) plus Marco Andretti (SRX)

Kurt Busch Wins Battle of Brothers

Scores First Victory of The Season At Atlanta

Kurt Busch Wins Battle of Brothers #NASCAR

Kurt Busch outdueled his younger brother Kyle Busch in the pair’s fourth career 1-2 finish to secure his 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs position and take his 33rd career victory in Sunday’s Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart.

Busch, 42, has been particularly good at the 1.5-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway.  Sunday’s win was his fourth there, most among the current field, and the last trophy given before the historic NASCAR track is repaved and reconfigured going forward.

More importantly Sunday’s work was a big statement for Busch, who started the race with only a 25-point buffer in the championship standings with six races left to set the 16-driver playoffs field. Now with the win, he’s “in,” and his emotions climbing out of Chip Ganassi Racing’s No. 1 Chevrolet certainly reflected the relief and joy.

“Hell yeah, we beat Kyle,” a smiling Kurt Busch said after climbing out of his car, putting his fists in the air and turning toward the cheering crowd in the grandstands.

“What a battle on an old-school race track,” Kurt Busch said. “It’s been one of those years where I knew we were going to have our back against the wall, just above the (playoffs) cut-off line and needed to race hard and race smart.”

Kyle Busch Emerges from Late Tangle with Hemric

Lands 102nd Xfinity win at Atlanta

Kyle Busch Emerges from Late Tangle with Hemric #NASCAR

Kyle Busch earned his record 102nd NASCAR Xfinity Series race victory Saturday afternoon in the Credit Karma Money 250 at Atlanta Motor Speedway – taking the checkered flag in overtime to top a perfect 5-for-5 record in Xfinity starts this season.

The winningest driver in series history proclaimed Saturday’s work to be his final curtain call, the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion saying he would no longer compete in the Xfinity Series.

Ironically, in what should have been his biggest bow before the fans – his traditional victory celebration – Busch, 36, opted for a more subdued acknowledgement of the win. He placed the flag inside his Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 Toyota and conceded the win wasn’t exactly how he wanted to add to his historic victory tally.

On the previous restart with only six laps remaining in regulation, Busch was behind his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Daniel Hemric and gave him a bumper-push forward to help the two get in front of the field. But Hemric’s No. 18 JGR Toyota instead wiggled sideways, made contact with another car and hooked into the outside wall; the wreck forcing the overtime finish.

“Not quite the win we were hoping for,’’ Busch said, “a little bit of a somber win, I guess, not just for it being it the last one, but for the way it kind of happened.

“Really hate it for my teammate Daniel Hemric there on the frontstretch. Just trying to get to him, trying to push him, trying to hit him and get him moving forward. We hit that bump there on the track at the same time and it kind of juked his car and he was across traffic, I guess. Ended up wrecked, which was not all how I foresaw that all going. “But we were able to push our way through and get on to Victory Lane.”

Austin Hill survives Overtime

Wins Inaugural Truck Series Race at Knoxville

Austin Hill survives Overtime #NASCAR

At the end of a remarkable race on an equally remarkable race track, Austin Hill took home the trophy in Friday night’s Corn Belt 150 presented by Premier Chevy Dealers at Knoxville Raceway.

After a fourth attempt at overtime in the inaugural NASCAR Truck Series event at the iconic .5-mile dirt track, Hill scored his first victory of the season in a race that featured 14 cautions and a 17-car pileup in Turn 1 that could rival even the biggest “Big One” at Talladega.

“Man, I thought we were out of it,” said an elated Hill, who had shown speed throughout the race but fell back from the second position after a restart on Lap 73. “I thought we were out of it for a little bit. I had that restart outside of the 38 (Todd Gilliland) earlier in the race, and I fell back all the way to like 20th.

“I didn’t think we were going to make it back up. Track position was huge. It was really hard to get around people—you had to kind of rough ‘em up a little bit to get around ‘em. But we don’t stop, we don’t quit, even when we think we’re down and out.”

Pole Winner Derek Kraus won the first and second stages Friday and finished fifth by avoiding most of the chaos at the end of the race.

Corey Heim Muscles by Ty Gibbs To Win

Menards 250 at Elko Speedway

Corey Heim Muscles by Ty Gibbs To Win #ARCA

Corey Heim was not thinking about the ongoing ARCA Menards Series championship battle between himself and Ty Gibbs as he raced in the closing laps of Saturday night’s Menards 250 at Elko Speedway.

He was thinking about revenge.

In what the 19-year-old from Marietta, Georgia, described as a retaliation for his rival’s aggressive driving earlier in the event on the 3/8-mile paved oval, Heim, who restarted third with three laps to go in the wake of a late caution, nudged the race leader Gibbs out of the way on the evening’s final drop of the green flag. The pilot of the No. 20 Craftsman Toyota for Venturini Motorsports assumed the lead and proceeded to coast to his fourth win of the 2021 season.

“We also have a couple dents on the left rear, the left side door and the left front,” Heim responded in his post-race interview when asked about the damage on his car sustained in the incident with Gibbs. “That’s all from (Gibbs), as well. I think that’s pretty much even right there. He’s probably mad because he lost like he usually is. …

“Just paid back what he did to me earlier in the race. That’s all it comes down to.”

Marco Andretti Wins in Shootout at Slinger

Third-Generation Racer Takes First Camping World SRX Series Victory

Marco Andretti Wins in Shootout at Slinger #SRX

NTT INDYCAR Series veteran Marco Andretti won the Camping World SRX Series event Saturday night at Slinger Speedway to take his first victory in a racecar with fenders and a roof.

The third-generation racer whose grandfather is Mario Andretti and father is Michael Andretti held off local all-star Luke Fenhaus to take the win at the quarter-mile, high-banked asphalt oval 35 miles northwest of Milwaukee.

“Honestly, I know it’s not a popular win, but I tried to be as clean as possible,” said Andretti, a 16-year veteran of the NTT INDYCAR Series. “I’m so proud of him (Fenhaus). I’m trying to learn from him, to be honest with you. Just delighted to be able to do it without touching him. I know it’s not a popular win, but us old guys have to get it when we can. He’s young, he’s got a lot of time ahead of him. I had so much fun.”

The series finale is next Saturday in Nashville. If you have not watch SRX, be sure not to miss the last opportunity to do so in 2021 – the Superstar Racing Experience is exciting and super fun to watch.

The finale will feature current #NASCAR Cup Series Champion Chase Elliott racing his father “Awesome Bill” and Hailee Deegan who has demonstrated her talent in this new series.

NashCar Weekend Recap

#NashCar Weekend Recap

Winners: Kyle Larson (Cup); Kyle Busch (Xfinity); Ryan Preece (Trucks) plus Tony Stewart (SRX)

Kyle Larson Pours It On, Wins Cup Series’ First Race at Nashville Superspeedway

Kyle Larson Pours It On, Wins Cup Series’ First Race at Nashville Superspeedway

Kyle Larson continued his streak of superiority Sunday afternoon, winning the Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway — his third consecutive win, following three consecutive runner-up finishes. He hasn’t finished worse than second place in a NASCAR Cup Series race since May 2.

It’s a high performance mark the series hasn’t seen in more than a decade when former Hendrick Motorsports driver Jimmie Johnson won four straight points-paying races in 2007. Larson’s win Sunday was his third straight points-paying victory, but he also won the All-Star Race $1 million-to-win exhibition last week at Texas Motor Speedway.

“It was a great day,” Larson said, smiling at the understatement. “We never really had to run behind people, so I don’t know if one of my teammates got out front again, it probably would have been hard to pass them. This Valvoline Chevrolet was really good. It cut the middle of the corner really well and our pit crew did an awesome job again. I just hope we can keep it going.”

Kyle Busch Fends Off Allgaier, Collects 100th Xfinity Series Win

Kyle Busch Fends Off Allgaier, Collects 100th Xfinity Series Win

Kyle Busch earned his historic 100th NASCAR Xfinity Series victory Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway in epic fashion – starting on the pole position, leading a race-high 122 of the 189 laps and bettering the field on three restarts in the closing 20 laps of the Tennessee Lottery 250.

For the second race in a row, Busch had to hold off veteran Justin Allgaier on a series of late-race restarts. The margin of victory was a mere 1.11 seconds – the two dueling side by side in the final laps and exchanging the lead seven different times in the final stage of racing. The victory makes Busch a perfect 3-for-3 in Xfinity Series starts this season, and it’s the second time he has won from the pole.

“I remember growing up as a kid and watching (NASCAR Hall of Famer) Mark Martin win every week in that 60 car, just the domination he had,” said Busch, driver of the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. “And he’s No. 2 with 49 wins. Wanted to give a huge shoutout to Rowdy Nation out there, we appreciate you, Rowdy Nation. I saw a lot of you standing up when Allgaier took the lead then a lot of you sat back down when I took the lead. So, an awesome day for Rowdy Nation.”

Ryan Preece Wins his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Debut

Ryan Preece Wins his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Debut

Ryan Preece took the lead from Grant Enfinger with seven laps remaining in the Rackley Roofing 200 at Nashville Superspeedway to earn his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory Friday night in his first race in the series.

Preece, the 30-year-old Connecticut native who competes full time in the NASCAR Cup Series, is only the fifth driver in history to win in his Truck Series debut.

“That was a lot of fun,” Preece said. “Really I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know anything. I was just taking the guidance from (crew chief) Chad (Johnston) and my teammates and told them I’d be better in the race than I was in qualifying and practice. And fortunately, I lived up to that.”

Tony Stewart Takes the Checkered Flag for His First SRX Win

Tony Stewart Takes the Checkered Flag for His First SRX Win

Tony Stewart won the Camping World SRX Series race Saturday night at Knoxville Raceway, leading twice for a race-high 43 laps to take his first victory as a driver at the half-mile, semi-banked dirt oval roughly 40 miles southeast of Des Moines.

“It’s the first time I’ve been in victory lane at Knoxville,” said Stewart, who has witnessed his sprint car drivers at Tony Stewart Racing win the prestigious Knoxville Nationals 11 times. “This is where I’ve watched Donny Schatz and Steve Kinser and the greatest of the greats in sprint car racing. This is the place I’ve always wanted to be, for sure, so this is pretty cool.”

“This is the Sprint Car Capital of the World, and I want to thank the Knoxville staff and all the fans. They’re not used to tin tops, and if they see tin, they want to see it on top of the cage, not surrounding the cage. Just appreciate the fans and everybody for letting us come here.”

Hailie Deegan Demonstrates Her Ability

Hailie Deegan Demonstrates Her Ability

Racer - Hailie Rochelle Deegan

Hailie Rochelle Deegan started her career in NASCAR at the age of seventeen in 2018 while participating in the #NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. She managed to become the first female driver victorious in West Series races! She competed in the ARCA Menards Series West in 2018 and '19 for Bill McAnally, earning three victories.

She was the 2020 ARCA Menards Series Rookie of the Year, finishing third in the point standings and earned four top 5 and 17 top 10 finishes.

Hailie Deegan is currently in her rookie season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, driving the No. 1 David Gilliland Racing Ford. She is seventeenth in the point standings and third in the Sunoco Rookie of the Year battle.

NASCAR Race Mom has been watching Ms. Deegan’s on-track progress over this short four years and must express personal fatigue of hearing that Hailie is a ‘good female racer.’ Hailie’s aggressive performance at Knoxville Raceway last night in the SRX Dirt race proved her talent period, irrespective of gender.

Knoxville Raceway SRX Podium

Of the three dirt track ringers employed to spice up the second SRX race, Hailie Deegan provided the best showing spotlighted by her determined last lap pass of Ernie Francis Jr. for a second-place podium finish.

“My goal coming into this race was to prove to everyone that I deserved to be here. I feel like we did that tonight, running second to Tony Stewart, that’s a huge accomplishment for me,” said Deegan, “I feel like we just ran a clean race, we just wrapped the bottom, stayed consistent, ran my line and finished second.”

Deegan, who is splitting her SRX ride with Tony Kanaan, will be back in the series one more time this season: The July 10 race at Slinger Speedway. NRM cannot wait.

Heat Race No. 1 (12 minutes, 23 laps):

Doug Coby Wins the Inaugural Camping World SRX Series

Doug Coby Wins the Inaugural Camping World SRX Series
Inaugural Camping World SRX Series

Doug Coby won the season-opening race of the inaugural Camping World SRX Series Saturday night at Stafford Motor Speedway and scored a win for short-track racers across the United States.

Coby is a six-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion and winner of 30 races at Stafford, from the Modified Tour to SK Modifieds to Pro Stocks and Late Models. He earned his 31st and arguably biggest Stafford victory on a national stage, with his triumph in the Camping World SRX Series broadcast live on the CBS Television Network and streamed on Paramount+ Premium.

“What a special night for short-track racing in America,” said Coby, who had to fight off NASCAR veteran Greg Biffle for much of the 100-lap race around the half-mile oval. “This is a special night for Stafford Motor Speedway and everybody who is a short-track racer around the country, whether you’re dirt or asphalt.

“Just to have all these fans here and all these drivers – the guy who won the Indy 500 two weeks ago, NASCAR Hall of Famers, Daytona 500 champions, and here I am, Modified Tour guy and homegrown Stafford Speedway guy. It just goes to show there are a lot of good short-trackers out there. I like to think I’m one of them, but there are hundreds of others who are good at their craft and get around their speedway really good. It ain’t going to be easy for any invader, and I love that we were in equal cars.”

The Camping World SRX Series features world-class drivers from an array of motorsports backgrounds competing in identically prepared racecars on some of the most iconic short tracks in America. Helio Castroneves, recent winner of the Indianapolis 500 for a record-tying fourth time, was on the same stage as Coby.

“We weren’t in Modifieds that I drive all the time,” Coby said. “I haven’t driven a full-bodied car here in 20 years, so it was an adjustment for me. These cars were sporty and fun and the guys figured them out. The guys who were struggling earlier in practice sure figured them out in the heat races and did a great job. I’m just really pumped for everybody in the Modified community. That’s who I represent, that’s who I am and that’s who I’ll always be, so I’m just thrilled to bring it home for them.”

How committed was Coby to representing short-track racers in the Camping World SRX Series season opener? He skipped the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway to race at Stafford, and that meant missing a race where prior to tonight, Coby was second in the championship standings by only five points.

“I’ve got six Tour championships and I’m shooting for seven to tie Mike Stefanik, and if it takes one more year to tie a great like that, I’m happy to wait,” Coby said.

Coby finished sixth in the first heat race, and with the field inverted for the second heat race, the Milford, Connecticut-native lined up seventh in the 12-car field. In a prelude to the feature, Coby carved his way toward the front, leading the final two laps to take the win.

Victory in the second heat race earned Coby the pole for the feature. He led the first eight laps before three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart took the lead. Marco Andretti led laps 12-15 before Biffle took over on lap 16. Coby, meanwhile, never ran lower than third.

With his extensive knowledge of Stafford, Coby worked his way back to the lead, taking the top spot away from Biffle on lap 25. Biffle made Coby earn the spot, as he was never far from the back of his bumper. Biffle occasionally got his nose just to the inside of Coby’s left-rear fender and finally got around him on lap 62, but Coby’s tenacity was unmatched. Coby took the lead away from Biffle on lap 65 and held it until lap 97 when Biffle made one final charge off turn four to briefly take the lead. Coby would have none of it. He got past Biffle one final time to lead the final two laps and cross the stripe .287 of a second ahead of the 19-race winner in the NASCAR Cup Series.

“The only thing I screwed up tonight is my exit, and I’d do it all over again if that’s what it takes to win this race,” Coby said. “Thank you, fans.”

While the win was special for Coby, it was also bittersweet.

“I lost a very good friend of mine this week, Don King,” Coby said. “He was one of my best friends, gave me my first Modified Tour ride, and I know the whole crew was watching tonight.

“He’s not just my former owner, he’s one of my best friends. He has been for 20 years. We’re going to have his funeral on Monday and Tuesday and it’s going to be a tough week, but this is an opportunity to show people who believe in somebody that 20 years later they might do something good.

“When somebody passes who helped you in racing, you go race and you honor them with a good drive and you tell everybody all about it. I’m just happy to be able to acknowledge him.”

Before departing victory lane, Coby also acknowledged the opportunity afforded by the Camping World SRX Series.

“Before we go, I want to thank everybody at SRX for doing this,” Coby said. “These guys have busted their butts. I know the guys at the shop, I know how hard you work to get these cars together, and I really appreciate everything you’ve done. Ray Evernham, Tony Stewart, George Pyne, the Montag Group, everybody at CBS, the fans watching at home – a short-tracker won tonight, guys.”

For co-founder Evernham, the debut of the Camping World SRX Series was satisfying.

“I thought the guys raced hard. We tore up a little bit of equipment but, again, I think the fans enjoyed it and it’s all about the fans,” Evernham said. “The drivers did a great job tonight. I think we’ve got to give ourselves a pretty good mark on tonight based on the crowd reaction. I think it was a good show. It’s pretty humbling because I know how many people work behind the scenes to make this happen, from the television side, the advertising side, the guys who built the cars. It’s humbling that the greatest drivers in the world have come here to support this program and reach out and be right with the folks in grassroots racing.”

Stewart, who like Evernham is a co-founder of the Camping World SRX Series and a NASCAR Hall of Famer, relished Coby’s victory.

“That’s what this is supposed to be all about,” said Stewart, who finished the race in third. “The whole concept about this was to have fun and to celebrate motorsports, and I think this was a perfect example of that tonight. Let’s go five more weeks and do the same thing at five more tracks.

“This is a very aggressive six-week stretch. To be in Connecticut tonight, then to be in Iowa next week on dirt, and to go back and forth like we are for six straight weeks and having to maintain these cars and get loaded up and travel and get set up, fix cars and do that again for six straight weeks is going to be hard on our crew guys, but I wouldn’t substitute any of the guys we’ve got for this. These guys are all excited, and I think seeing their faces after we climbed out of the cars was as much fun as it was to see the fans’ faces. These guys have worked 70-, 80-hour weeks to get 16 cars ready to come to the racetrack. I’m pretty proud of these guys.”

The Camping World SRX Series leaves the pavement of Stafford’s half-mile oval behind and transitions to dirt-track racing at the legendary Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway. The second of the Camping World SRX Series’ six-race short-track schedule takes place June 19 at the half-mile, semi-banked dirt oval roughly 40 miles southeast of Des Moines.

Joining the Camping World SRX Series regulars at Knoxville are Brian Brown, Scott Bloomquist and Hailie Deegan.

Brown is a prolific sprint car driver with 180 career feature victories, including five in the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series. The Grain Valley, Missouri-native is the four-time and reigning 410 Sprint Car champion at Knoxville (2007, 2010, 2019 and 2020), where his 53 wins place him fifth on the track’s all-time win list.

Bloomquist has won more than 600 dirt late model events in his 40-year career, including 94 in the Lucas Oil Dirt National Series and 33 sanctioned by the World of Outlaws. From Mooresburg, Tennessee, Bloomquist is a nine-time national champion.

Deegan is subbing for Camping World SRX Series regular driver Tony Kanaan, who has a commitment in his native Brazil. Deegan is a fulltime driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The 19-year-old racer from Temecula, California, is a three-time winner in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West and was the first female to win a race in that series.

After Knoxville, the Camping World SRX Series stays on the dirt with its June 26 event at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. SRX returns to pavement July 3 at Lucas Oil Raceway near Indianapolis and then ventures north to Slinger (Wis.) Speedway on July 10 before its season finale July 17 at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway.

Every Camping World SRX Series race will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET on the CBS Television Network with streaming live on Paramount+ Premium.
