NASCAR / ARCA /SRX Race Weekend Recap (Watkins Glen, Lucas Oil, Evergreen and Springfield Mile)

NASCAR / ARCA /SRX Race Weekend Recap (Watkins Glen, Lucas Oil, Evergreen and Springfield Mile)

Winners: William Byron (Cup); Sam Mayer (Xfinity); Jesse Love (ARCA); Sean Hingorani (ARCA West); Brent Crews (ARCA Sunday) plus Jonathan Davenport (SRX)

William Byron Wins Cup Series Race at Watkins Glen

William Byron Wins Cup Series Race at Watkins Glen

William Byron added to his season highlight reel, earning his first career NASCAR Cup Series road-course victory with a dominant win in Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen at historic Watkins Glen International.

It marks a career-best fifth victory of the season, tops in the NASCAR Cup Series and the most for him in a single season in a six-year career in NASCAR’s top series. And the 25-year-old Charlotte native had to earn this one — holding off another championship challenger, Denny Hamlin, by a healthy 2.632 seconds for the win. Byron led 66 of the 90 laps — extending his advantage over the field each lap of the final 10-lap run to the checkered flag.

“Yeah, I would have to think about that a little bit, though,” Byron said when asked if he felt like it was his most dominant race win. “But it definitely feels really good, just a huge credit to the race team behind me. I want to thank Max Papis. My first road-course win, and we worked years and years for this.

“Thanks to all the guys on the team. I did a lot of laps on iRacing this week, got a new simulator at home. It’s a great win. It shows when we’re at our best, we can perform like this.”

Sam Mayer outlasts field in OT, wins at Watkins Glen

Sam Mayer outlasts field in OT, wins at Watkins Gle

JR Motorsports driver Sam Mayer survived a full-contact afternoon at Watkins Glen International — contributing his own bump and run on the final restart to take the lead in overtime and hold off the field for his second career NASCAR Xfinity Series win Saturday in the Shriners Children‘s 200 at The Glen.

Mayer‘s No. 1 JRM Chevrolet tagged the back of the day‘s most dominant driver and then-race leader Ty Gibbs, spinning Gibbs‘ No. 19 Toyota, which then collected a handful of other lead pack cars. The 21-year-old Wisconsin native pulled away from the mayhem behind and raced off to a .909-second victory over Richard Childress Racing‘s Sheldon Creed.

“On that first one, I got used up, thought I had a good one there‘‘ Mayer said of the two overtime restarts. “All glory to God for this one because we had to work our tails off for it.

“I wheel-hopped it, that‘s unfortunate, and I feel bad for doing that. Obviously, you don‘t want to take out any car like that,‘‘ Mayer added. “Just trying to get another win in the Xfinity Series. I‘ve got a lot of catching up to do. I was in there, I put my nose in there, and that‘s part of it.

“That‘s an accident, but I think everyone can agree it‘s okay for an Xfinity Series regular to win this race.”

The ARCA Series ‘General Tire 100 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International’

Jesse Love - The ARCA Series ‘General Tire 100 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International’

Jesse Love’s eighth victory in the 2023 ARCA Menards Series season was simultaneously his most unpredictable.

Love only had one lap to pass race leader Connor Zilisch as a light rain began to fall around Watkins Glen International with five laps remaining. As the two reached the final turn, Love nudged Zilisch out of the groove to narrowly steal the win in Friday’s General Tire 100 at the Glen.

“Hats off to Connor Zilisch,” Love said. “I hope he doesn’t think [the bump] was dirty. It was borderline, but I had to do something. He left the door open for me to do something when he got into the rumble strips.

“Brent Crews and Connor Zilisch are two of the best up-and-coming race car drivers in the country right now and they put that on full display today.”

With his victory, Love continues to make ARCA Menards Series history by becoming the 13th driver to win four races in a row. Should he win the next two races, Love will break the all-time record that currently stands at five consecutive victories between Tim Steele, Bruce Gould, Jack Bowsher and Harold Smith.

Pole: Corey LaJoie

Sean Hingorani Dominates at Evergreen, Earns 4th West Series Win of 2023

Sean Hingorani Dominates at Evergreen, Earns 4th West Series Win of 2023

Despite entering the NAPA Auto Parts ARCA 150 at Washington’s Evergreen Speedway second in ARCA Menards Series West points behind rival Landen Lewis, Sean Hingorani had maintained confidence that he’s the favorite for the 2023 championship.

On Saturday night, the Venturini Motorsports driver proved why.

Hingorani at Evergreen picked up his fourth West Series win of the season, and he did so in dominating fashion. The 16-year-old from Newport Beach, California spent the first third of the 150-lap race on the 5/8-mile oval riding the back bumper of pole-sitter Tyler Reif before he made the pass for the lead on Lap 56.

Hingorani never looked back.

Brent Crews Ends Jesse Love’s Four-Race Win Streak, Earns First Victory at Springfield

A bump-and-run on Love shortly after the final restart of the day was all Crews needed to pull away from the field during the Dutch Boy 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds and win in just his second ARCA Menards Series start.

Crews is no stranger to finding Victory Lane on a dirt track but took great pride in earning his first series victory at a historic facility like the Springfield Mile.

“This is the highest-caliber stuff I’ve ever done,” Crews said. “Being able to win [at Springfield] means a lot, but I want to give all glory to God. None of this would be possible without him, [my crew chief] Monon [Rahman] and everyone at Venturini Motorsports that puts their hands on this thing to make it fast.”

Davenport Proves Super Again, Winning Camping World SRX Thursday Night Thunder Finale at Lucas Oil Speedway In Front Of Big Crowd.

One of the biggest motorsports events in Ozarks-area racing history came to Lucas Oil Speedway on Thursday night and it did not disappoint - with a familiar face taking a trip to victory lane.

Jonathan Davenport, putting on a display worthy of his nickname of "Superman," led all 90 laps to capture the Camping World SRX Thursday Night Thunder season finale in front of an estimated 8,000 roaring fans and countless others watching on ESPN.

Davenport, one of the world premier Dirt Late Model drivers, won for the fifth time at Lucas Oil Speedway in 2023 adding to four Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series/Lucas Oil MLRA wins. The Blairsville, Georgia, native emerged from a thrilling battle with Clint Bowyer after a restart with 10 laps remaining that had the big crowd on its feet.

Brad Keselowski rallied to finish second with Ken Schrader third and Ryan Newman, the 2023 Camping World SRX champion, taking fourth.

"I'm speechless. This is awesome," said Davenport, a five-time World 100 winner and three-time Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion. "I was just out there pacing myself, trying to keep the edges on the tires and do dirt-guys stuff.

"Man, this is an awesome experience. Thanks so much to SRX for giving me this opportunity and a chance to come out here and race with some of my heroes, legends and superstars. I'm just an ol' country boy from Georgia that runs dirt cars."

Ryan Newman clinched the series championship before the feature race went green. He entered the night with a 39-point lead and finished 45 in front of the defending champ Andretti and Keselowski who tied for second.

"It means a lot," Newman said of the championship. "Any kind of championship in any series and the Superstar Racing Experience, what can you say? Guys like TOny Stewart. Jonathan Davenport, who's won everything on dirt. Racing against Kenny Schrader, Kenny Wallace, it's just a whole lot of fun. Castroneves, an Indy Car champion and four-time winner. It's very special."

BMR Drivers Look For Another Win At Monroe

BMR Drivers Look For Another Win At Monroe

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West travels to the Pacific Northwest this week for its traditional stop at one of the most historic tracks on the circuit – Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington.

The NAPA AUTO PARTS 175 presented by the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame on Saturday marks the 58th series visit to the .646-mile track.

The venue is popular with Bill McAnally Racing, with BMR drivers winning the two most recent series events there. Todd Gilliland took the victory in 2016 and Chris Eggleston won last year.

This year’s lineup of drivers at BMR features Derek Kraus of Stratford, Wisconsin in the No. 16 NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Camry; Cole Rouse of Fort Smith, Arkansas; in the No. 99 NAPA Filters Toyota Camry; and Hailie Deegan of Temecula, California in the No. 19 Mobil 1/NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota Camry.

Sixteen-year-old Kraus and Deegan, who recently turned 17, are members of the NASCAR Next program that spotlights NASCAR’s rising stars.

Kraus finished 11th as a rookie in last year’s series race at Evergreen Speedway. He returns there third in the championship standings – with two wins, five top-five, and six top-10 finishes in eight series starts this season.

In his only start at Evergreen Speedway, Rouse finished sixth in his rookie year in the series in 2016. He is fourth in the standings – with three top-five, and seven top-10 finishes this year.

Deegan is a series rookie who will be making just her ninth series start on Saturday. Nonetheless, she has already matched the mark for the best finish by a female driver in the series – coming home second at Roseburg, Oregon in June.

She leads rookie points in the series and is fifth in the overall standings – with three top-five and seven top-10 finishes.

NAPA AUTO PARTS will play a big role in this weekend’s race at Evergreen Speedway – with major activation, including as the title sponsor of the event.

Fans will get an early opportunity to see BMR’s NAPA team and driver Derek Kraus, as they make an appearance on Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Michael’s Toyota in Bellevue in conjunction with NAPA Seattle. Later on Friday, Brian Keene, General Manager of NAPA’s Seattle Distribution Center, will bring a group of employees and customers out to the speedway for a special VIP meet-and-greet with the BMR team.

A VIP NAPA Hospitality will be provided at the track on Saturday, courtesy of NAPA Seattle. The VIP experience for NAPA guests on Saturday will also include special pit tours. NAPA’s role in the event will also include participation in driver introductions, giving the command to start engines, waving the green flag as honorary starter, and presenting trophies after the race.

In addition to the recent wins by Eggleston and Gilliland, BMR has five other victories at Evergreen Speedway. Brendan Gaughan won there in 2000 and 2001, Austin Cameron was victorious there in 2004, Brian Ickler won there in 2007, and Eric Holmes took home the checkers in 2012.

This year’s Evergreen Speedway race is scheduled to be televised on NBCSN on Aug. 15 at 3 p.m. PT.

Todd Gilliland's win at Iowa Speedway, his fourth NASCAR K&N Pro Series West victory of the season, allowed him to retake the championship lead from Ryan Partridge  as the series heads to the Pacific Northwest this weekend. The win also tied Todd for the #KNWest record of four wins by a rookie in a season, which was set by Lance Hooper in 1996.

It is a pretty sure bet that the youngster will break Hopper's twenty-year-old record before the season's end.

Last race, the 16-year-old NASCAR Next driver from Sherrill's Ford, North Carolina, took the green flag from the second starting position behind NASCAR Next alumnus Kyle Benjamin and swapped the lead with him twice before taking the point from Benjamin heading into the halfway break.

Once the contest restarted, Benjamin grabbed the lead once again on lap eighty-one, but was quickly tracked down by Gilliland two laps later. Then the #16 of Gilliland sped away from Benjamin and the rest of the field.  He led the final sixty-eight laps of the race.

After finishing twenty-fourth at Sonoma, Gilliland has picked up two straight wins to erase Partridge's lead. However, only three slim points separate the two.

Partridge finished second to David Mayhew at Evergreen last year. Noah Gragson and defending series champion Chris Eggleston are twenty-four and twenty-five points back, respectively, and both scored top fives in last season's visit to Washington.

The NAPA Auto Parts 150 this Saturday will be the series' 52nd race at Evergreen Speedway, the only NASCAR sanctioned track in the state of Washington.  Greg Pursley holds the qualifying record in his Gene Price Ford at 22.831 seconds at 101.862 mph on July 10, 2011.

Evergreen Speedway is a located within the confines of the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, Washington. The stadium can accommodate up to 7500 spectators in the covered grandstand and an additional 5000 in the uncovered modular grandstands.

The layout of the track is unique in that it incorporates a 5/8-mile paved outer oval, a 3/8-mile paved inner oval, a 1/5-mile paved inner oval, a 1/8-mile dragstrip, and a nationally renowned figure-eight track, a 1/5-mile oval and a 3/4-mile road course.

Evergreen Speedway was tabbed the “Super Speedway of the West” by David Pearson on one of his visits to the historic NASCAR track. Evergreen played host to many NASCAR 500 lap events before California and Nevada built their super speedways. Today Evergreen Speedway is home to the NASCAR Whelen All American Series, the K&N Pro Series West as well Formula Drift.

from Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. Stephen Brashear/Getty Images.

MONROE, Wash. – It took just 12 races, but Dylan Lupton is a NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race winner.

The 19-year-old from Wilton, Calif., held off a fierce charge by Greg Pursley to win the NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by Toyota at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday.

The close finish of .194 seconds capped off a highly competitive 150-lap event on the historic .646-mile oval in Monroe, Wash. Lupton captured the lead in the closing stages by dodging a multi-car pileup among the leaders just after a restart.

Pursley, who won at Monroe in 2011, tried to overtake Lupton after the final restart, but was forced to settle for second. He was followed by points leader Derek Thorn, who recovered from the late-race accident with Eric Holmes. Braeden Havens and Carl Harr completed the top five.

Taylor Cuzick recorded his best finish of the season with a sixth place finish. Jack Sellers, Daryl Harr, Matt Tifft and pole winner Cameron Hayley rounded out the top 10.

The race featured seven lead changes among five drivers.

The NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by Toyota is slated to air on Fox Sports 1 on Sept. 8 at 9 a.m. ET.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West continues its swing through the Pacific Northwest with a visit to Spokane County Raceway in Airway Heights, Wash., for the Toyota/NAPA Auto Parts 150 on Saturday, Aug. 24.

K&N Pro Series heads to Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash. Getty Images for NASCAR
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West has passed the midway point of its season as it visits the Pacific Northwest this week for the NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by Toyota at Evergreen Speedway.

The event marks a traditional series stop at the historic track that is part of the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe, Wash. The venue has a long heritage that includes the label, “The Super Speedway of the West.”

/files/napa_150_logo_monroe_0.jpgDerek Thorn leads the championship standings by 12 points as the series heads into the final seven events of the 15-race schedule. The Lakeport, Calif., driver registered eight consecutive top-five finishes – including three wins – through the first eight races. Thorn, who pilots the No. 6 Sunrise Ford/Lucas Oil/Eibach Ford for car owner Bob Bruncati, came away with a third-place finish last year in his first visit to Monroe.

Michael Self, also with three wins this year, trails Thorn in the standings – 346 to 334. The driver of the No. 21 RCR/Golden Gate Meat Co. Chevrolet from Park City, Utah, will be looking to add to his runner-up Monroe finish from a year ago.

Fifteen points back of the leader is Cameron Hayley, who opened the season by winning the inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach non-points event at Daytona International Speedway and has been in contention for his first career series points win at multiple events through the first half of the season. The 17-year-old from Calgary, Alberta drives the No. 24 Cabinets By Hayley Ford for championship car owner Gene Price. Hayley finished 19th last year in his first visit to Monroe.

Hayley’s teammate at Gene Price Motorsports, Greg Pursley, is 36 points out of first place in the standings. Pursley, the 2011 series champion, finished sixth at Monroe last year in the No. 26 GPM/Star Nursery/Real Water Ford.

This year’s leading Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender, Dylan Lupton, is 56 markers back of first in the overall standings. The Wilton, Calif., driver – who wheels the No. 9 Vadio/Lupton Excavating/Sunrise Ford/Lucas Oil Ford – is a teammate to Thorn in the Bruncati camp.

The balance of the top 10 drivers in the standings feature Carl Harr of Edmonton, Alberta in the No. 2 WestWorld Computers Chevrolet; Taylor Cuzick of Tolleson, Ariz., in the No. 42 Freightliner of Arizona Chevrolet: Daryl Harr of Edmonton, Alberta in the No. 71 iWorld Connect Chevrolet; Dylan Hutchison of Fair Oaks, Calif., in the No. 5 Karl Kustom/Bay Bio Diesel Chevrolet; and 15-year-old series rookie Giles Thornton of Whitefish, Mont., in the No. 12 TTC Racing Chevrolet.

MONROE, Wash. – Finally Eric Holmes gets to celebrate a win at Evergreen Speedway.

After finishing in the top 10 in his three previous starts at the historic .646-mile oval, Holmes was able to pass Michael Self for the lead on Lap 131 and remained out front the rest of the way to win the NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by Gene Price Motorsports on Saturday for his first win of the season and 17th overall in NASCAR K&N Pro Series West competition.

“This is a great win. We’ve been running pretty good, but we’ve had some really bad luck this season,” Holmes said. “Maybe this can get it turned around.”

The win for the driver of the No. 20 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota out of Escalon, Calif., was especially sweet after a disappointing finish in his last start at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway at which he experienced engine problems while leading the race. He was forced to settle for a 23rd-place finish.

Additionally, the win was the 50th for Bill McAnally Racing comprised of 49 championship events and one special non-points event.

“I didn’t know about the 50-win thing until about a month ago and I wanted to be the one to get it. But with the bad luck we had been having I wasn’t sure we need the extra pressure,” he said. “I’m really happy for the whole team now that we got it. Now it’s time to move on and get some more wins down the stretch.”

For Self, the runner-up finish illustrates his progression in stock-car racing having cut his teeth on karting and open-wheel racing.

“I’m really happy with our performance tonight. Our oval program is really coming along,” said the 21-year-old out of Park City, Utah. “To come into a track like this and finish second is great. Eric’s car was just too strong for us tonight, but we’ll keep at it.”

Derek Thorn, who started from the rear of the field due to a move to a back-up car, finished third. The car change was necessitated by a hard crash into the Turn 1 wall during practice earlier in the day.  Jonathon Gomez and David Mayhew finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Holmes qualified third and remained near the front of the pack throughout the first half of the race before making his move and taking the lead from Self on Lap 131.

“I knew we had a good car in practice. I didn’t think it would be that dominant, Holmes stated. “I hustled on that restart and was able to get around (Self). It was a great race.”

Completing the top 10 were defending series champion Greg Pursley, who started from the pole, points leader Dylan Kwasniewski, Daryl Harr, Ryan Philpott and Carl Harr.

The win also gave Holmes a locked-in spot to the UNOH Battle At The Beach on the .4-mile oval at Daytona International Speedway next February during Speedweeks.

In the championship point standings, Kwasniewski remains in the top spot with a six-point advantage over teammate Pursley. Mayhew holds down the third position followed by Thorn.

The NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by Gene Price Motorsports will air on SPEED on July 26 at 3 p.m. ET.

The next event on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West schedule is the NAPA/Toyota 150 at Colorado National Speedway in Dacono, Colo., on July 28.

Podium Finish At Evergreen Speedway

Moses Smith, driver of the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota Camry for Bill McAnally Racing, finished 3rd at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington. He remains solidly in second place in the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship.

With the second half of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West 2011 season underway, Smith made his third visit to the podium. Smith has made two previous visits to Evergreen Speedway with both being top-ten finishes. “It’s challenging track in that it has a lot of bumps and dips that upset the race car. It really makes you work at it,” said Smith.

On Saturday, the No. 16 Hasa Toyota team took to the track for two practice sessions and qualifying. Smith put the Hasa/NAPA Filters entry inside of row five to start the race. ”We didn’t qualifying where we wanted to but we have 200 laps to move up.” At lap 70, Smith was running in the top-five. He gained one more position at lap 90.

There was a half-way break at lap 100 at which time crew chief Mario Isola and the Hasa team went to work putting on fresh tires and making minor adjustments. Back to green flag racing, Smith brushed the wall at lap 122. He kept pace and was still in the top-five. With less than twenty laps to go, the second thru fourth place cars went three wide going into turn one. There was a lot of close racing and more contact with the wall, but Smith is able to continue; now running in fourth. With less than five to go, Smith battled with his teammate Eric Holmes and moved into third, taking the checkered flag.

“We had some good competition here,” continued Smith. “Side by side racing for most of the 200 laps made it an exciting race. The Hasa Toyota ran great and we’re back on the podium. We’ll take it!”
