Nemechek and Hill are NASCAR Xfinity Favorites

Food City 300 Xfinity Playoff Opener Tonight

 

For the first time in NASCAR history Bristol Motor Speedway will serve as host to a Playoff race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The longtime home of the final Xfinity regular season race, Bristol is now the Round of 12 kick-off race.

 

While the Playoff opener is a huge deal and the 12 Playoff contenders will share the majority of headlines, one moonlighting driver is also garnering his share of the spotlight.

 

Dale Earnhardt Jr.

 

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who famously coined the phrase “It’s Bristol, baby!” is suiting up to race at the iconic short track for the first time since he retired from full-time driving in 2017. Earnhardt will be at the controls of the blue, yellow and white No. 88 Hellmann’s Mayonnaise Chevy for JR Motorsports, giving his team five entries in what promises to be a very thrilling Food City 300 (7:30 p.m., USA Network and PRN Radio) on Friday night.

 

John Hunter Nemechek

 

Six-time season winner John Hunter Nemechek comes to Bristol as the Playoff top seed, fresh off a win in Kansas, where he dominated the action and took the checkered flag a full seven seconds in front of the second-place finisher. The veteran driver of the No. 20 machine for Joe Gibbs Racing, has posted 13 top fives and 19 top 10s in a season that he has been out front for most of the time.

 

“I’m looking forward to getting the Playoffs started at Bristol," Nemechek said. "We came (to Kansas) trying to get the Regular Season Championship. I thought that we were going to have a 60-point day this weekend, and that’s what we did. We controlled what we could control. We did everything that we possibly could. So, let’s go to the Playoffs—I’m ready.”

Austin Hill

 

Meanwhile, Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Hill is right there behind Nemechek, and ironically claimed the regular season Xfinity title in his No. 21 Chevy. Hill won four times and posted 15 top fives and claimed 19 top 10s and certainly plans to battle door handle to door handle with Nemechek down the stretch.

 

“Just happy that we were able to bring home the Regular Season Championship, get the extra 15 bonus points--which is huge,” said Hill, who finished fifth in the regular season-finale. “But we’ve got to go to work. We’ve got to be better. The 20 (Nemechek) was the class of the field all day (at Kansas).”

 

In addition to Nemechek and Hill, there is a strong group of drivers among the 12 Playoff qualifiers, including former Bristol winner Justin Allgaier, and a host of drivers who have won at Bristol in either the Trucks or the ARCA series, including Sam Mayer, Chandler Smith, and Sammy Smith.

 

Five other drivers have tons of experience and are expected to make some Playoff noise come Friday night, including Josh Berry, Cole Custer, Sheldon Creed, Daniel Hemric and Parker Kligerman.

Two local Knoxville standouts are also in the field, as FOX race analyst Trevor Bayne, winner of the 2011 Daytona 500, will drive the No. 19 machine for Joe Gibbs Racing, and past Bristol ARCA winner Chad Finchum will pilot the No. 08 machine for SS GreenLight Racing.

Bayne, DiBenedetto, Allmendinger, Buescher, Whitt Round Out Lineup For STP 500 Pre-Race Experience At Martinsville Speedway

Chase Elliott and Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace Jr. Are Also A Part of The Pre-Race Experience.

The Pre-Race Experience not only gives fans a chance to sign the start/finish line and watch STP 500 driver introductions from the track, it also give them the opportunity to hear from seven different Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers in emceed question-and-answer sessions.

Trevor Bayne, Matt DiBenedetto, AJ Allmendinger, Chris Buescher and Cole Whitt are the latest to add their names to the list of drivers participating in the $25 experience.

“These five drivers all bring a different element to the Pre-Race Experience as we continue to do everything we can to make this a fun, affordable event for fans the morning of the STP 500,” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “They have competed in everything from a Late Model Stock Car to a Cup car at Martinsville and will give fans great insight into driving at our historic facility and their lives outside of a race car.”

Bayne, DiBenedetto, Allmendinger, Buescher and Whitt will join Chase Elliott, the 2016 Sunoco Rookie of the Year and two-time NASCAR Playoff contender, and Darrell ‘Bubba’ Wallace Jr. as a part of the Pre-Race Experience.

The Pre-Race Experience gives fans the chance to watch driver introductions from the track, along with a morning full of fun and excitement on the track.

In addition to the emceed question-and-answer sessions, the Pre-Race Experience offers fans the opportunity to walk the frontstretch on race morning, sign the start/finish line, have a photo opportunity in mock Victory Lane, and enjoy music, games and prizes.

The cost of the Pre-Race Experience is $25 for adults and $15 for youth 17-and-under.

The driver question-and-answer sessions, music, games and prizes will be held on the frontstretch beginning at 10:00 a.m. and will remain open until the conclusion of driver introductions.

Admission to the Pre-Race Experience does not include a ticket for the STP 500.

The STP 500 weekend presented by whosyourdriver.org is March 23-25.

Inside ‘Jack’s Garage’ with Trevor Bayne

Trevor Bayne is ready for the 2018 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (#MENCS) season. On January 24th, the driver of the No. 6 AdvoCare Ford Fusion joined Claire B. Lang for this week’s episode of “Jack’s Garage.”

Trevor discussed his family’s offseason move to Tennessee and how he feels going into the upcoming MENCS season.

The Knoxville, Tennessee, native relocated his family last December from the Charlotte area to his hometown, which is more than 200 miles from Roush’s headquarters in Concord, North Carolina.

Bayne, though, plans to travel weekly to his team’s shop so he can meet with officials and crew members on Tuesday or Wednesday.

“They’ve been great with it,” Bayne said during the NASCAR on NBC podcast of Roush’s reaction to the move. “As long as I’m committed in getting my work done, they shouldn’t know a difference.

“A lot of drivers will (use video conferencing) or call into the meeting, and it’s like being there, but I actually want to be present as much as possible for the guys who aren’t in the meeting. The guys working in the shop or body shop that want to see you and know what’s going on to know that you’re committed.”

NASCAR stars who got their starts in the K&N Series

Kyle Larson: Driving for Rev Racing as a member of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program, a 19-year-old Larson found Victory Lane twice and won the championship in his K&N Pro Series East season debut in 2012. He also made one start in the K&N Pro Series West (Sonoma, 2014), which resulted in a win. 

Darrell Wallace Jr.:  Darrell Wallace Jr. won his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East debut in 2010 at Greenville, driving for Rev Racing and the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program. He became the first African-American driver to win a race in series history en route to Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors. Wallace went on to pick up five more wins between 2010-12 before moving up the NASCAR ladder. 

Joey Logano: In 2007, Logano drove for Joe Gibbs Racing and started the wave of young talent in the series, becoming the first NASCAR K&N Pro Series East driver to win Sunoco Rookie of the Year and the championship in the same season at 17. Logano also won two K&N Pro Series West races over the years, and twice won the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. 

Chase Elliott: Elliott started racing in the K&N Pro Series East in 2011 at 15 years old. He earned his first NASCAR victory in 2012 at Iowa Speedway, and also took a 2016 trip to Victory Lane in the K&N Pro Series West at Sonoma. 

Ben Kennedy: Kennedy's K&N experience has paved the way for opportunities in the NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. The Daytona Beach, Florida, native has 42 starts in the K&N Pro Series East since 2010, with his first start coming at age 18. He's won twice during that time, both coming in a 2013 full-time season that saw him finish fourth in the series standings. Kennedy also has made seven career starts in the K&N Pro Series West. 

William Byron: Just two years ago, William Byron made his name known through the K&N Pro Series East; four wins in the division propelled him to earn the 2015 K&N Pro Series East title, paving the way for a Camping World Truck Series ride with Kyle Busch Motorsports the following season. The future Hendrick Motorsports driver also made two starts in the West division in 2015. 

Kevin Harvick: The California native has run 23 events in the K&N Pro Series West over a span of eight seasons, including his full-time season in 1998 when he won the series championship. Harvick has seven wins in the K&N Pro Series West, his most recent trip to Victory Lane occurring earlier this season at Sonoma 

Austin Dillon: Dillon ran a full season in the K&N Pro Series East in 2008, earning one win at Greenville and finishing second in the championship standings. He raced three additional East events in 2009 and 2014, as well as three K&N Pro Series West races in 2009, 2014 and 2015. 

Daniel Suarez: The 2016 XFINITY Series champion made 43 starts in the K&N Pro Series Series East, notching three wins in 2013 and 2014 while driving for Rev Racing as a member of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program. He also has four starts in the West Series, his most recent start coming this season at Sonoma Raceway. 

Ryan Blaney: A young Ryan Blaney made eight starts in the K&N Pro Series East and West in 2011 and 2012, earning his first NASCAR win in the 2011 West finale at Phoenix. Blaney also ran the K&N Pro Series West race at Sonoma this season 

Ty Dillon: Dillon made 11 starts in the K&N Pro Series East in 2009-2010, recording a win at Gresham Motorsports Park at the age of 18. He also two starts in the West Series in 2010 and 2011. 

Trevor Bayne: The 2011 Daytona 500 winner, Trevor Bayne scored his first NASCAR victory at Thompson in 2008 in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc., Bayne also won two poles and finished fourth in the championship standings. 

Martin Truex Jr.: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series points leader, Martin Truex Jr. made his NASCAR debut in the K&N Pro East in 2000 at 20, running three full seasons and then a partial schedule in 2003. He collected five wins and 13 pole awards in that span before moving up to the NASCAR XFINITY Series in 2004 and winning the first of back-to-back championships. 

Alex Bowman: Before being tabbed to replace Dale Earnhardt Jr. next year, Alex Bowman transitioned from sprint cars to stock cars with a season in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East in 2011. Bowman finished sixth in the championship standings and edged Chase Elliott and Corey LaJoie for the series’ Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors. 

Currently, Harrison Burton and Todd Gilliland are two K&N Pro Series drivers on their way to stardom. The two drivers have been battling on track all season long with a total of seven East wins between them -- Burton has four, while Gilliland has three. 

Currently, Burton leads Gilliland in the standings by just four points. Gilliland also has six wins and leads the K&N Pro West standings, where he is the defending series champion. The East has three races remaining (concluding at Dover on Sept. 29), and the West four (finishing at California’s Kern County on Nov. 4).

Event to be held during “AAA 400 Drive for Autism” Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race

 

Dover International Speedway is once again hosting a special event for families of children on the autism spectrum.

On Sunday, June 4, during the “AAA 400 Drive for Autism” Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race, Autism Awareness Day at the Races will provide families with a sensory-friendly environment to enjoy 400 laps of North America’s top motorsports series. Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers Daniel Suarez, Danica Patrick, A.J. Allmendinger, Trevor Bayne and Jamie McMurray are scheduled to make appearances at the event, as well as Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series team owner Richard Childress.

Autism Awareness Day at the Races tickets cost $95 for adults and $25 for children ages 12 and under. Call 800-441-RACE or click here to order. On event day, the gate opens promptly at 9 a.m.

The event, in its sixth consecutive year, is a joint effort between Dover International Speedway and Autism Delaware, supported by AAA and Ollie’s Bargain Outlet. A portion of the proceeds supports Autism Delaware. Click here for more information on Autism Delaware and its programs.

The Autism Awareness Day at the Races ticket package will include seating in the climate-controlled grandstands at the Monster Mile, which offers views of the backstretch as well as the highly-banked concrete turns. In five years, more than 3,000 people have participated in the program.

Other highlights include information booths with items of interest to families affected by autism, a hot lunch buffet, non-alcoholic beverages and much more.

As in years past, a reserved area near the grandstand seats will provide a quiet zone, with muted lighting and sound, allowing attendees to take a break from the race and crowds when necessary. The room includes comfortable seating, games, and video screens to help fans keep up with the race or watch family friendly movies. Autism Delaware’s service professionals will also be on hand to assist families as needed.

A Wild, Action-Filled Afternoon at Thunder Valley

Carl Michael Edwards II 'walked away' from NASCAR with one year remaining on his contract with Joe Gibbs Racing before the start of the 2017 season; therefore he will not be able to defend his 2016 win.

The recent retiree won the 2016 Food City 500 at the Bristol Motor Speedway (BMS) in a controlling manner. 

Starting from the preferred positon of pole, Edwards lead two hundred and seventy-six (276) and beat Dale Earnhardt Jr. to the checkered by .766 seconds.

However, that was not the only story of the April BMS event.

Rookie Chase Elliott posted a career-best fourth-place result a week after recording a career-best fifth at Texas. Chase earned himself ten top-five finishes last season.

Trevor Bayne ran fifth, scoring his first top-five since his surprise victory in the 2011 season-opening Daytona 500. Bayne makes his sixth career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) start at Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon.

However, most heartwarming, was the tale of Matt DiBenedetto. He crossed the finish line in sixth, scoring a best-ever finish (and only the second top 10) for BK Racing. Matt’s emotional interview after the race was moving. 

The Food City 500 is the cornerstone event of the 2017 Spring race weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, and one of the most anticipated events on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

The Most Surprising Champions in the #NASCAR DAYTONA 500

Just in time for Speedweeks

“The Great American Race” is no stranger to the unexpected as, over the course of 58 years, the DAYTONA 500 has seen its fair share of surprise champions.

Below are some of the most surprising – and memorable – champions in the history of the DAYTONA 500.

Trevor Bayne

On a new racing surface, Trevor Bayne drove the famed No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford to Gatorade Victory Lane after two green-white-checkered attempts in the 2011 DAYTONA 500. Bayne, who turned 20 years old the previous day, became the youngest driver to win “The Great American Race”. In addition, he brought the legendary Wood Brothers their first victory in 10 years.

Tiny Lund

Heading into the 1963 DAYTONA 500, Tiny Lund was without a ride for “The Great American Race.” However, only 10 days before the race, Lund heroically helped pull Marvin Panch from the wreckage of a burning car during a sports car test. At Panch’s suggestion, Lund was tabbed by the Wood Brothers to take over behind the wheel of the No. 21. Lund went on to win the race thanks to a bold strategy by the Wood Brothers that planned for the completion of the race on one fuel stop less than the rest of the field. Though Lund ran out of gas on the final lap, his car was able to coast to the finish line for his only DAYTONA 500 victory.

Michael Waltrip

Prior to February 18, 2001, Waltrip was winless in 462 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series starts. The 2001 DAYTONA 500 would prove to be his first win in the premier series as he used drafting help from Dale Earnhardt Jr. to join his brother Darrell as a DAYTONA 500 champion – making history as the first brother combination to win the DAYTONA 500.

Derrike Cope

In one of the greatest upsets in NASCAR history, Derrike Cope passed Dale Earnhardt on the last lap in Turn 3 to win the 1990 DAYTONA 500 after Earnhardt ran over a piece of bell housing. It was Cope’s third DAYTONA 500 start as he became the fourth driver in DAYTONA 500 history to earn his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory in “The Great American Race.”

Marvin Panch

The overwhelming favorite to win the 1961 DAYTONA 500 was pole-winner Fireball Roberts, driving one of Smokey Yunick’s powerful, factory-backed 1961 Pontiacs. Marvin Panch, driving a year-old 1960 Yunick Pontiac, essentially a back-up team car, was an afterthought until he was running in third place late in the race. Fortuitously, second-place Banjo Roberts spun out after blowing an engine with 18 laps to go and leader Fireball Roberts blew his engine with 13 laps to go, handing the lead and the win to Panch.

Ward Burton

Burton’s 2002 DAYTONA 500 victory may be the wildest of them all. During a red-flag stoppage on Lap 195, race leader and two-time DAYTONA 500 champion Sterling Marlin got out of his car and tried to fix a crumpled fender, resulting in him being sent to the back of the field on the restart. Burton inherited the lead and proceeded to hold off Elliott Sadler and Geoff Bodine to the finish. His victory gave Dodge its first DAYTONA 500 victory since 1974.

Pete Hamilton

New England native Pete Hamilton had never won a NASCAR race when he arrived at Daytona in 1970, driving the No. 40 Petty Enterprises Plymouth Superbird, with Richard Petty’s brother, Maurice, as his crew chief. Richard Petty was the presumptive favorite, but lost an engine and finished 39th. Hamilton survived a fierce late-race battle with David Pearson by taking four tires on the last pit stop, while Pearson only took two.
