Derek Thorn - K&N Pro Series West Champion

Derek Thorn talks about his 2013 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway.

Love K1 Speed

Founded in 2003 in Carlsbad, California, K1 Speed now boost of being the premier karting company in America. Indoor karting has grown into a large industry over the last several years, not only within California, but across the nation. K1 Speed was one of the first companies to bring electric karts and indoor go kart tracks to Southern California, and they have witnessed an explosion in the market.

“The premise behind the creation of K1 Speed was to offer enthusiasts and amateurs alike an authentic and genuine racing experience in a safe, comfortable, accessible and perhaps most importantly, unique environment. Utilizing advanced European electric karts and indoor asphalt tracks, K1 Speed quickly developed a reputation as being fun and exciting, and our growth has been continuous since we first opened our doors. (from their website)”

Since Reef Indy’s cousin, Sofia surpassed the 48” height requirement, Uncle Moses decided it was time for her first trip to K-1 Speed. Sofia had driven a go-kart before; however, this would be the first time she took to the track with fellow racers!

As you can witness from the photos below Ms. Sofia loved her first visit to K1 Speed!

NASCAR Race Mom's a Winner!

They say no good deed goes unpunished. As you know NASCAR Race Mom is a huge fan of all the charitable endeavors of the NASCAR Community. NRM is an especially big fan of the benevolent work of Sprint Cup Drivers #24 Jeff Gordon and his teammate #88 Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation

In fact, just a couple of days ago, NASCAR Race Mom posted about the Jeff Gordon's Children's Raffle which ended today. The proceeds of the raffle benefited the needed funding for childhood cancer research and treatment.

NASCAR Race Mom made sure to buy her ten tickets for the raffle. While I did not win the first nor second prize, NRM was just notified that she won the #9 prize (2005 JG Daytona picture, 1998 JG diecast, 1999 JG diecast/stats book).

NASCAR Race Mom - won the 2005 JG Daytona picture, 1998 JG diecast, 1999 JG diecast/stats book

It is too bad that the picture is not autographed. NASCAR Race Mom still does not have a Jeff Gordon autograph for her NASCAR Collection. However, that does not dampen the joyous feel generated by the fact that NRM was able to help kids in need AND receive a nice reward for that good deed!

Crown Royal (DIAGEO) And the NBA Announce Multiyear Marketing Partnership!

2012 NBA ALL-STAR Weekend at Amway Center
2012 NBA ALL-STAR Weekend at Amway Center

Wow – You all know how much I love my Crown Royal. I was really excited when I heard the news that Crown Royal (DIAGEO) And the NBA Announce Multiyear Marketing Partnership! NASCAR Race Mom was never a big Basketball fan . . . . . . that is until she was able to experience the excitement, in person, for herself!

Back in February 2012, we were able to attend the 2012 NBA ALL-STAR Weekend at Amway Center. The best from the East and West clashed in the 61sth annual NBA All- Star game. It was an amazing and exhilarating event!

Now – just released: Diageo, the world’s leading premium drinks business, and the National Basketball Association (NBA) today announced a new multiyear marketing partnership that will make Diageo the exclusive spirits partner of the league. Diageo brands Ciroc® and Crown Royal® will be integrated into marketing initiatives across the NBA and NBA Development League (NBA D-League), with Diageo conducting activities under the Baileys brand with the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

The NBA provides a powerful platform for Diageo to create initiatives that communicate the importance of celebrating life responsibly. Both Ciroc and Crown Royal will work closely with the league to create innovative new programming to remind fans to drink responsibly.

Our brands have the unique privilege of participating in some of life’s greatest celebratory moments the world over and what better partner to bring those moments to life than the NBA,” said Peter McDonough, Chief Marketing and Innovation Officer, Diageo. “From the players and competition to fashion, music and nightlife, the NBA opens the door for us to leave a lasting impression with adult fans in truly innovative and meaningful ways around the game.

As part of this partnership, Crown Royal will further drive its “Reign On” campaign, now in its second year, by providing fans access to players through unique video content on digital and broadcast channels. A multi-part video series titled “On Point” will debut on TNT and feature television personality Terrence J exploring game-changing NBA moments and unique aspects of the NBA lifestyle.

Our new marketing partnership with Diageo will showcase the celebration around the NBA’s most extraordinary moments, both on and off the court,” said Mark Tatum, NBA Executive Vice President, Global Marketing Partnerships. “Storytelling about our game and our players is critical to broadening our reach and we're excited to work with Diageo to create content that we know will resonate with our fans.

Paul & Me In Orlando for the Big Game.
In Orlando for the Big Game
Fans will also be able to watch the most exciting moments during the season through a new digital series, “Reigning Moments of the Week presented by Crown Royal,” that will air on NBA Game Time on NBA TV and NBA.com.

This weekly series will culminate with two “Reigning Moments” specials that will air during the season on NBA TV. Crown Royal will also extend this series and introduce a “Crown Royal Reigning Moments” digital series for the NBA D-League.

Additionally, Ciroc will have a strong presence at NBA All-Star 2014, a global celebration of basketball in New Orleans in February. At NBA All-Star, Ciroc will be hosting a Ciroc-branded lounge and will serve as the presenting partner of Club éne-bé-a, an official party and celebration, that features live musical performances by renowned Latin artists.

Through this partnership, Diageo, Crown Royal and Ciroc will have a significant presence during NBA national game telecasts on ABC, ESPN and TNT, as well as NBA TV and NBA.com. Diageo will also release NBA-themed television advertising, packaging and point-of-sale materials at retail.

For the WNBA, Baileys will showcase inspiring stories from around the league on WNBA.com and will also serve as a Gold level partner of the WNBA Inspiring Women Luncheon.

Four-Time Champion Dario Franchitti
See You Up Front

Four-Time Champion Dario Franchitti must medically retire.

NASCAR Race Mom will miss this spirited racer.  In the Champ's own word:

“Since my racing accident in Houston, I have been in the expert care of some of the leading doctors and nurses, all of whom have made my health, my safety and my recovery their top priority," he said in a statement. "I am eternally grateful for the medical care I have received over the last several weeks. I'd also like to thank my family and friends for their unbelievable support.

"One month removed from the crash and based upon the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post-accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing. They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being. Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop.

"Racing has been my life for over 30 years and it's really tough to think that the driving side is now over. I was really looking forward to the 2014 season with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, with a goal of winning a fourth Indianapolis 500 and a fifth IndyCar Series championship.

"I'd like to thank all my fellow competitors, teammates, crew and sponsors for their incredible support over the course of this amazing ride. I'd also like to thank Hogan Racing, Team KOOL Green and Andretti Green Racing for the opportunities to compete on the racetrack, and especially Target Chip Ganassi Racing, who have become like a family to me since I joined their team back in 2008. I would be remiss if I didn't thank all my fans around the world. I can't thank you enough for standing by my side for all these years.

"I'll forever look back on my time racing in CART and the IndyCar Series with fond memories and the relationships I've forged in the sport will last a lifetime.

"Hopefully in time, I'll be able to continue in some off-track capacity with the IndyCar Series. I love open-wheel racing and I want to see it succeed. I'll be working with Chip to see how I can stay involved with the team, and with all the amazing friends I've made over the years at Target.

"As my buddy Greg Moore would say, ‘See you up front.’ ”

Get well soon Dario!

Thorn Snags K&N Pro Series West Title

Gaulding Gets Record-Setting Phoenix Victory

with a victory at Phoenix International Raceway. (Getty Images for NASCAR)

Gray Gaulding won the Casino Arizona 50 on Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway, but Derek Thorn was the man of the night.

Thorn, from Lakeport, Calif., earned his first NASCAR K&N Pro Series West championship with a 15th-place finish which was enough to hold off a trio of contenders. Thorn carried a 16-point advantage over 2011 series champion Greg Pursley into the night with Cameron Hayley and Michael Self right there, as well.

Gaulding got the win when Cole Custer spun in Turns 3 and 4 on the white-flag lap after some slight contact. It’s the first career victory for the 15-year-old out of Colonial Heights, Va., who becomes the youngest race winner in K&N West history at 15 years, 8 months and 30 days. He eclipses the mark of 16 years and 2 months established by Dylan Kwasniewski in Aug. 2011.

Fellow NASCAR K&N Pro Series East competitor and 2013 Sunoco Rookie of the Year Jesse Little crossed the line in second followed by Hayley in third. David Mayhew was fourth followed by Brandon McReynolds in fifth.

Custer recovered to finish sixth while Kelly Admiraal, Brett Thompson, Self and Cuzick completed the top 10.

The race was red flagged on the initial start after several cars got tangled on the frontstretch causing a lengthy cleanup.

The Casino Arizona 50 is slated to air on FS2 on Nov. 17 at 11a.m. ET.

K&N Pro Series West Season Finale

Cole Custer may have taken the “21 means 21” pole award; however, if you are a true K&N Pro Series West fan, your eyes will be on the Gene Price and Bob Bruncati Drivers today after the NASCAR Nationwide Race. The Casino Arizona 50 set for a 5 p.m. MT green flag.

Cole Custer, who usually contests in the K&N Pro Series East picked up where he left off in practice and earned the pole position in NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Phoenix International Raceway event earlier today.

However, four drivers remain in contention for the championship in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West; in one of the closest four-way battles in series history, just 30 points separate the top four drivers in the championship standings!

Second-year driver Derek Thorn, who pilots a Bruncati machine, leads, with a 16-point margin over series veteran Greg Pursley. Cameron Hayley is third in the standings, 18 points out of the lead – while Michael Self is fourth, still with a mathematical shot at the title. Pursley and Hayley race for Gene Price.

Here is how the series leaders qualified
  • 2-Cameron Hayley in the #24 Cabinets by Hayley/GPM Ford
  • 3-Michael Self in the #21 RCR/Golden Gate Meat Co. Chevrolet
  • 9- Greg Pursley in the #26 GPM/Star Nursery/Real Water Ford
  • 12- Derek Thorn in the #6 Sunrise Ford/Lucas Oil/Eibach Ford

If you want to “watch” this battle live, click here  to follow via “LIVE: K&N West Season Finale At Phoenix.” NASCAR Race Mom is pleasantly surprised at how comprehensive this coverage has become.

This K&N Pro Series West season finale promises to be a thrilling display of NASCAR drama. It is just a shame that this race is a mere 50 laps in duration.

**Kudos to NASCAR for extending an additional spot to the field to accommodate the 31 entries into the event.

NKNPS West Phoenix 11/9/13 Qualifying

The championship picture for the top four going for the championship.
If none of the four win...

Derek Thorn needs to finish 11th or better to clinch the title.
Greg Pursley will need to finish 16 positions ahead of Thorn.
Cameron Hayley will need to finish 19 positions ahead of Thorn.
Michael Self will need to win and have Thorn finished 28th or worse.

NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Phoenix News & Notes

Four K&N Pro Series West Drivers Remain In Championship Contention

Second-year driver Derek Thorn leads, with a 16-point margin over series veteran Greg Pursley.
Derek Thorn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 4, 2013) – Four drivers remain in contention for the championship as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West heads to Arizona this week to decide the title in the season finale at Phoenix International Raceway with the Casino Arizona 50 on Saturday, Nov. 9.

In one of the closest four-way battles in series history, just 30 points separate the top four drivers in the championship standings.

Second-year driver Derek Thorn leads, with a 16-point margin over series veteran Greg Pursley. Cameron Hayley is third in the standings, 18 points out of the lead – while Michael Self is fourth, still with a mathematical shot at the title.

Thorn of Lakeport, Calif., can capture the crown in the Bob Bruncati-owned No. 6 Sunrise Ford/Lucas Oil/Eibach Ford by finishing 11th or better, regardless where the other three contenders finish. In five series starts at PIR, Thorn has four top-five finishes – with a best finish of third in 2011.

Greg Pursley is only sixteen points out of first place.
Greg Pursley stands second in Championship
Expect a strong challenge from Pursley, however. The 2011 series champion has maintained momentum in the last half of the season, scoring four wins in the past seven races in the No. 26 GPM/Star Nursery/Real Water Ford. Pursley – a former Southern Californian who now calls Parker, Ariz., home – has three wins, four poles and seven top-fives in 10 starts at the one-mile venue that he considers his home track.

Hayley, meanwhile, has a series leading average finish of 4.57 in 14 races this year in the No. 24 Cabinets By Hayley/GPM Ford. The 17-year-old from Calgary, Alberta has two top fives in four Phoenix starts – including a runner-up in the season opener to Pursley, his teammate at Gene Price Motorsports. Hayley and Pursley have swapped spots back and forth between second and third in points three times in the past three races.

While Self has a lot of ground to make up, trailing the leader by 30 points; he still has a shot at the crown if the top three falter. The Park City, Utah driver – who won the season finale at Phoenix a year ago – will be in car owner Jim Offenbach’s familiar No. 21 RCR/Golden Gate Meat Chevrolet.

The Phoenix race is the 15th and final event in 2013 for the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West, as the West’s oldest stock car circuit wraps up its 60th season.

Crown Royal Maple - Sweet Deal

Crown Royal Maple Finish - Exceptionally Smooth Whiskey

My husband brought home a Sweet Deal. Crown Royal Maple Finish was giving away a free embossed rocks glass with each purchase. This cute eight ounce stack-able glass sports the words “Crown Royal” on the side with a Crown Royal design on the bottom!

The legendary taste of Crown Royal with a touch of natural maple flavor has become a favorite of NASCAR Race Mom. It is sweet, however, unlike some flavored whiskeys, the maple flavor tastes real. That maple zest against the warmth of the Crown Royal signature flavors of vanilla, oak and caramel – makes a perfect blend.

Now NASCAR Race Mom has the perfect drinking glass for her Crown Royal Maple!
