Next Race - The Bullring at Las Vegas
The prestigious series has served as a springboard for such notable NASCAR drivers as Kevin Harvick, Las Vegan Brendan Gaughan, Daytona 500 winner Derrike Cope, Chad Little, Ron Hornaday Jr and David Gilliland.
The K&N Pro Series West tour first visited Southern Nevada at the old Las Vegas Speedway Park (where the Bullring now sits) in 1994 and 1995. In 1996, it moved to the then-new LVMS 1.5-mile superspeedway until 2002. The series also competed at the Bullring from 2000-2002.
The series’ origins can be traced back to 1954, when NASCAR came to the West Coast and began sanctioning the Pacific Coast Late Model circuit in California, which included stops in San Diego (Balboa Stadium), Oakland, San Mateo (Bay Meadows Speedway) and Gardena (Carrell Speedway).
“It’s a natural fit for K&N to partner with Las Vegas Motor Speedway.,” said Steve Williams, Vice President of K&N. “It’s a quality facility with a dedication to racing for almost every type of motorsport, just like K&N filters. Because of that it is the ideal facility to add to the Pro Series schedule.”
“K&N is a company with a long history in motorsports and its technology has benefitted race teams with increased and reliable horsepower for 40 years,” said Steve Rogers, C.E.O. of K&N. “Our roots in NASCAR go back to the 1970s and this feels like a partnership long overdue. After supporting grassroots and professional racing for decades, we love the idea of supporting a developmental series that provides great racing excitement while developing the top tier drivers of tomorrow.”
Today’s K&N Pro Series West stars include three-time champion Eric Holmes (2006, 2008, 2010), 2004 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series champion Greg Pursley and 2010 Sunoco Rookie of the Year Luis Martinez Jr.
Joining the K&N Pro Series West contingent on June 11 will be the NASCAR Super Late Model, NASCAR Charger, NASCAR Bomber, Legend Cars and Bandolero classes.
The Bullring offers family entertainment at family-friendly prices. The Bullring’s concession stand features $1 hot dogs, $1 sodas and $1 beer.

Location, Location, Location!
"Being located at a race track was my three year goal for the Formula Mazda when I took over the manufacturing rights in September of 2009. Although a bit early, moving to the Ranch completes this goal." said Smith.
The location and access to track will help to propel the FM class into the future and allow for an easily accessible race car test drive environment. The ability for potential FM owners to test drive and enjoy the Formula Mazda will bring more drivers into the class and make the racing even more fun than it already is.
Moses has also taken the reigns of the well-established Texas Autosports and the Formula Car Challenge presented by Goodyear Southwest Series. Tim and Sandy Magrath spent fourteen years living and breathing Formula Mazda, and it shows. Their hard work and dedication are evident in the success of the arrive and drive program, their race team, the FCC Southwest Series, and Formula Mazda in general. It is with bittersweet feelings that Moses Smith Racing jointly announced that Tim and Sandy have decided to "change gears" and move on to a different adventure in their lives.
Moses Smith Racing LLC will remain the manufacturer of the Formula Mazda and Formula Mazda parts, and will now be located in Cresson, TX. The existing shop in Tempe, AZ has already been closed. Texas Autosports, under new ownership, will remain as it has been, the coordinator of the Southwest Formula Car Challenge Series, Southwest Formula Mazda and Pro Mazda parts dealer, prep shop, and race team.

COMBINATION RACE AT IOWA SPEEDWAY
- This will be the fifth edition of the East-West combination race at Iowa Speedway. In addition, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West visited the .875-mile track in Newton, Iowa for a stand-alone series race in 2009.
- Iowa Speedway, located about 30 miles east of Des Moines, is owned and operated by U.S. Motorsport Corporation. It was designed by former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Rusty Wallace. The track opened in September of 2006.
- The four East-West Combination events have resulted in four different winners – Joey Logano (2007), Brian Ickler (2008), Kyle Busch (2009) and Max Gresham (2010).
- The four events have also produced four different Coors Light Pole winners – Kevin Harvick (2007), Austin Dillon (2008), Busch (2009) and David Mayhew (2010).
- Busch was the only driver to win the E-W race at Iowa from the pole. Ickler started the furthest back and won, coming from seventh on the grid.
- Only four drivers had multiple top-five finishes in the E-W action at Iowa. Ickler, Mayhew, Jeffrey Earnhardt and Jesus Hernandez each registered two top fives.
- Hernandez has the most top 10 finishes in the combination races, finishing in the top 10 in all three E-W events he started.
- With an average finish of 5.33, Hernandez also leads that category.
- Busch has led the most laps of competition in E-W action at Iowa. He was out front for 168 laps in his dominating win in 2009.
- Only five drivers competed in all four E-W combination races at Iowa – Mayhew, Daryl Harr, Eric Holmes, Matt Kobyluck and Brett Thompson.
- Last year’s event was the only East-West combination race at Iowa to be extended by a late-race caution for a green-white-checkered finish.
- Chevrolet went to Victory Lane in the first two E-W events, while the two most recent wins went to Toyota.
- 104 different drivers have competed in the four E-W combination events at Iowa.

Capture the Crown
(Part Two)
The weekend started off rather unexpectedly. After landing at the Byrd International Airport (RIC), NRM was greeted with a signboard by my driver Warren! Now that does not happen to NASCAR Race Mom too often! Warren was very polite and efficient, as he escorted me to my hotel.
After checking into the Richmond Marriott , the entire “Capture the Crown” group drove to the Richmond International Raceway to obtain their track credentials. RIR is conveniently located in Henrico County, just outside the city of Richmond, Virginia. It is a large facility and can hold over 100,000 fans, workers and race team members. Now NASCAR Race Mom has been to numerous short tracks, especially on the West Coast. However, the enormousness and history of “America’s Premier Short Track” was not lost on me.
To finish out our day of arrival, the group vanned to the Book Binders for dinner. It was the perfect atmosphere for us bloggers to get to know our Crown Royal Hosts Zack, Jennifer, and Catlin.
The service was excellent and the manager even stopped by our table for a chat. My grilled salmon; baked potato, loaded with butter and chives; and spinach was tasty and so filling I had to forgo desert.
However, I did have a responsible nightcap (Crown Over Crushed Ice) before retiring to my hotel room. The anticipation made it difficult for me to fall asleep, but I knew that NASCAR Race Mom would need her rest for the thrilling day ahead. The Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400 promised to be fun-filled and exhilarating!
Before signing off, NASCAR Race Mom cannot pass up this opportunity to congratulate NASCAR Driver Matt Kenseth, his sponsor Crown Royal and the entire #17 team on their second win in the last five races, and their sixth place standing in the championship points. Could this be the year that Matt and Crown Royal win the championship? It is going to be an extraordinary 2011 NASCAR Season.
Remember you can follow Matt on twitter and on Facebook .

Looking Forward To Iowa Speedway
Bill McAnally Racing driver Moses Smith and the No. 16 HASA Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota team are off to Iowa Speedway as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West meet up with their counterpart from the East. Both will be battling for their own series championship points and for a starting spot in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.
Moses Smith heads to Iowa Speedway for the Goodyear Dealers of Iowa '175' presented by Tompkins Industries. The Hasa/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota team is excited about the combined NASCAR K&N Pro Series East/West Series event. The No. 16 team is focused on 175-laps of great racing at the 7/8-mile track in Newton, Iowa and closing the gap on the point leader.
This will be Smith's fifth visit to Iowa Speedway. A great effort by driver and team showed as Smith has two top-ten finishes of the West Series drivers. Smith is currently second in the chase for the 2011 championship.
"We have had a fast Hasa Toyota Camry everywhere this year," said Smith, "but we have also had some back luck during previous visits to Iowa. We're hoping to continue the momentum we've been building this season as we head to this very competitive race event. We don't see some these drivers throughout the race season so we don't necessarily know what to expect. But we're ready for whatever comes our way."
"Greg Purlsey (current point leader) is going to continue to be tough. We're keeping him in our sights and the HASA/NAPA team will be focused on our goal of winning races and bring home a championship for our race partners," said the newly transplanted Texan. Smith recently uprooted his open-wheeled business from Arizona to Cresson, Texas. Smith is the new owner of Texas Autosports which builds cars for Formula Mazda Series.
The Goodyear Dealers of Iowa '175' presented by Tompkins Industries can be seen on Thursday June 2nd on SPEED Channel at 3 pm PST. Please check your local listings.

Text Ride to Donate - Kyle Petty Charity Ride
Approximately 175 motorcycle enthusiasts, NASCAR fans and Victory Junction supporters including Kyle Petty and former NFL running back Herschel Walker, will hit the road on May 7 through May 14, 2011 for the 17th Anniversary Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America.
For the last seven years, Victory Junction has been the Ride’s primary beneficiary. The camp was founded by Kyle and his wife, Pattie, to honor their son Adam. Adam Petty was killed during practice for a NASCAR race at New Hampshire International Speedway. Located on 84 acres in Randleman, N.C., the Victory Junction camp opened its doors in 2004 to enrich the lives of children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses by creating camping experiences that are memorable, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound.
"May is a hard month and it always is. Adam went on the ride with us from the very beginning,” Kyle informed. “When you lose a child, or you lose a son, it’s pretty hard on a family. We look at the camp and we look at the ride as one. We lost one son but we gained about 12,000 other kids that are part of our family. . . . being on the ride has a healing effect.”
When NASCAR Race Mom asked Mr. Petty what the average West Coast short track racer and/or fan could do to help the cause, he did not hesitate with his answer.
“We are excited about a new way to donate this year. Just text “RIDE” to 27722 to donate $10.00 to the Kyle Petty Charity Ride and help send kids to Victory Junction! When you confirm the text, the donation will appear on your bill.”
Petty went on to report that the Charity Ride has raised nearly $14 million in its sixteen years and shows no signs of slowing down. You can donate all year long.
Fans can follow Kyle Petty and the riders on several social media pages, including facebook.com/kpcharityride, twitter.com/kpcharityride, and twitter.com/kylepetty.

Capture the Crown
NASCAR Race Mom at RIR
Sitting in front of my computer, in my quiet office, wearing my freshly laundered purple camo Crown Royal T-Shirt; I have come to the certainty that my weekend at the “America’s Premier Short Track” in Richmond, Virginia has supplied me with a mountainous amount of material for my blog. Therefore rather than blast my audience with precipitous facts, my participation in “Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400” will be covered in a mini-series of posts.
For those of you less familiar with me, my name is “z.” - better known as NASCAR Race Mom. For fourteen weekends of the racing season, you can locate me at a track participating in the K&N Pro Series West. This series serves as NASCAR's top developmental series and encompasses NASCAR's oldest stock car series in the West, which dates back to 1954. It runs on a challenging combination of speedways, short tracks and road courses, and the series has made its mark throughout the years with tough competition and exciting racing.
My oldest son races in this series and yes, I am the typical proud momma. Moses Smith, the #16 Hasa Pool Products / NAPA Gold Filters Toyota was recently voted the Most Popular Driver for the third year in a row. He finished the 2010 season in fourth place and after three races is in second place for the 2011 season.
Crown Royal’s “Capture the Crown” media event, was my first visit to the Richmond International Raceway. NRM learned that this short track has a RESPECT theme that is an awareness initiative to promote a first-class and safe atmosphere. NASCAR Race Mom was impressed at its simplicity yet effectiveness. The track emphasizes that the race fans:
- Be respectful of everyone;
- Be a good neighbor;
- Be responsible;
- Be attentive;
- Take pride and
- Have fun.
This makes a perfect conduit into my Crown Royal racing weekend. NASCAR Race Mom found Crown Royal to be a perfect business model for the RESPECT theme. As the number one selling Canadian Whisky brand in the US by value, Crown Royal has a tradition as long and distinctive as its taste.
As I savored my Crown Royal at the track, I was consistently reminded how Crown Royal takes pride in their product and of their attentiveness to detail. Quoting one of my Crown Royal Hosts, “We at Crown Royal want to encourage people to drink responsibly. We have always represented quality over quantity, and we want to get that message across to fans of NASCAR.” Their motto of “Please Drink Responsibly” was displayed below every official race logo.
Lastly, as my next in this series of posts will witness; NASCAR Race Mom had a very fun time at the “Crown Royal Presents the Matthew and Daniel Hansen 400.”

No. 16 Second At Miller
Moses Smith, driver of the No. 16 Hasa Pool Products/NAPA Gold Filters Toyota Camry finished in second leading fourteen lap at the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West event at Miller Motorsports Park (Toole, UT). The veteran driver from Bill McAnally Racing is in close pursuit of the point leader seeking his first series championship. Smith is second in the 2011 NASCAR K&N Pro Series West chase for the championship. He is only 58 points out of first with eleven races left in the 2011 race season.
Smith qualified the No. 16 Hasa Toyota on row six for the scheduled 50-lap race event on the East Course at MMP. He made a scheduled pit stop at lap 10 for fuel. He would restart the race at lap eleven in 26th. At lap 18, Smith was in the top ten with his focus set on the leader. He took the lead at lap 20. He radioed in that he thought his left front fender may have gotten “banged up a bit” during the course of very tight racing and that the Hasa Toyota was “tight.”
Smith led from lap 20 until lap 33 when he suffered a right rear flat. Crew Chief Mario Isola had him return to pit road a lap later to top off with fuel. The No.16 Hasa Toyota was back at it now in 21st. Spotter Mike David kept Smith focused as he navigated thru traffic and back in the top ten at lap 45.
With few scheduled laps left, Smith knew it was time to “go”. The caution came out at lap 49 as a car was stopped in turn three. With a “Green, White, Checkered” scenario, Smith, who was now in 7th was on the move when another caution flag was displayed, this time as two cars were involved in an accident at turn seven. Smith was now in third. Another attempt was made at lap 55 bringing the lap count up to 60 before the final restart. A last hard charge yielded Smith another position to finish the race in second. He continues to hold the series record at miller with the most top-five finishes.
The race was set to run 50 laps but eventually went to 63 laps, pushing the race an addition 13 laps and more than 28 miles past the scheduled distance.
“All those yellows at the end really helped me move up,” laughed Smith. “This was a tough race. We experienced really cold weather. When I woke up race day at the hotel and looked out, I saw over 3 inches of snow on the ground. I wasn’t sure if were racing. But then we got to the track just a few miles away and though it was cold, the track was clear and ready to race on.”
“This is a really tough track to pass on. After all that door banging action, we came away solid in our momentum to win a championship and some left side damage. I think the fans saw a great show. On to Iowa.”
The next race for the teams from Bill McAnally Racing will be on Saturday, May 21st at Iowa Speedway in Newton, Iowa. It is the annual East/West combination event. NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch holds the qualifying record for this event.

Moses qualified twelfth and suffered a flat tire while leading the race. However, he persevered and finished second. Pursley held off Moses Smith's furious challenge as a pair of green-white-checkered attempts pushed the scheduled 50-lap race to 63 laps.
