Hamlin Looking for Record Fourth Homestead-Miami NASCAR Cup Victory

Hamlin Looking for Record Fourth Homestead-Miami NASCAR Cup Victory

Dixie Vodka 400 on Sunday

Hamlin Looking for Record Fourth Homestead-Miami NASCAR Cup Victory

As the NASCAR Cup Series heads for Homestead-Miami Speedway for Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400 (3:30 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), Denny Hamlin has a shot at another record. With three victories at the 1.5-mile track, he is tied with Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart for most wins at the venue, which has hosted Cup events since 1999.

Boosting his chances, Hamlin expects the season’s first race on an intermediate speedway to run closer to last year’s form than either the DAYTONA 500 or the DAYTONA Road Course event, both of which produced first-time winners (McDowell and Christopher Bell). Kevin Harvick led the series with nine Cup victories last year, followed by Hamlin with seven.

“I think it will be more status quo on where we were last year,” Hamlin said. “That doesn’t mean me and Kevin, since it’s a mile-and-a-half, that we are going to dominate. With the mid-tier teams, this is where the resources that they don’t have will come into factor a little bit more.

“I don’t think I would call the 20 car (Bell) mid-tier, and I don’t think I would call the 34 (McDowell) a shock, because we were at a superspeedway. I think the winners list is like, ‘Oh wow, where (are) our superstars?’ but we are about to get into a chunk of the season where you are going to start to see some of your normal winners in the bracket.”

Also arguing in Hamlin’s favor is his starting spot. With fifth and third-place finishes and his strength in the stages of the first two races, Hamlin leads the series standings and will start from the pole at Homestead. That’s exactly where Hamlin started last year, when he collected his third win at the track.

In fact, seven of the winners in 22 Homestead-Miami Cup races have started from the front row, three from the pole and four from the second spot. That’s good news for Joey Logano, whose victory at Homestead in 2018 locked up the series championship. Logano starts second on the grid on Sunday.

Nor can you ignore the “rim riders” who have had success running the wall at the 1.5-mile track. Tyler Reddick finished fourth at Homestead last year after claiming back-to-back NASCAR Xfinity Series titles by winning at the track. Kyle Larson, notorious for running the wall, has three top-five finishes in seven starts there.

Harrison Burton Looks to tie his Father with Second Triumph at the 1.5-mile Venue in Saturday’s Contender Boats 250

A look at Saturday’s Contender Boats 250

  • Saturday’s Contender Boats 250 will be the 28th NASCAR Xfinity Series race held at the venue.
  •  Last season, Harrison Burton, son two-time Homestead-Miami winner Jeff Burton, won his first race at the track after leading only 11 laps. Noah Gragson in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, led a race-high 81 laps and ended up finishing fifth.
  • The win made the younger Burton the youngest series winner at the track (19 years, 8 months, 4 days).
  • After making the Playoffs a year ago and winning Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors, Burton has started the second strong yet again with a third- and a sixth-place at Daytona over the last two weekend.
  • The inaugural NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway was on Nov. 5, 1995 where Dale Jarrett took home the win and Joe Nemechek won the pole.
  • There have been 20 different race winners at the track in the Xfinity Series.
  • Tyler Reddick holds the race record from Nov. 17, 2018 at 140.515 mph.
  • There have been five races won from the pole or first starting position. That’s good news for Austin Cindric, who will go off first tomorrow and will be flanked by Daniel Hemric. Burton rolls off third, followed by Brandon Joes, Brett Moffitt, Brandon Brown, Justin Haley, Jeremy Clements, and Myatt Snider rounds out the top 10.
  • Starting positions of other notable drivers include Ty Dillon (13th), Justin Allgaier (19th), Gragson (23rd) and AJ Allmendinger (24th).
  • Three drivers in history got their first Xfinity Series career win at HMS: Cole Custer (2017), Kasey Kahn (2003) and Regan Smith (2012).

Armando Christian Perez – better known in the entertainment world as Pitbull – has made a name for himself globally through his musical talents. The GRAMMY Award-winning artist has made it a priority to give back to his hometown in numerous ways.

His philanthropy is highlighted by the school he started in 2013. Sports Leadership and Management (SLAM) is a public, tuition-free charter for middle and high school students. This year, the school commenced a curriculum designed for students who want to follow in Pitbull’s footsteps, and pursue a career in music.

““Mr. 305” is not just a Miami native, but someone who has remembered his roots and continually gives back to the community,” said Homestead-Miami Speedway President Al Garcia. “Providing our local youth opportunities such as this is imperative as they progress in their academic careers, and this performance affords them this special chance. We are excited and honored to have them be an integral part of our NASCAR race weekend.”

Pitbull comes to Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend as a part owner of Trackhouse Racing, a first-year team in the NASCAR Cup Series and whose No. 99 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE is driven by Daniel Suárez , a product of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity Program. Suárez will compete in Sunday’s Dixie Vodka 400 NASCAR Cup Series race, which gets a 3:30 p.m. start (FOX/ MRN-Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 90).

Pitbull “Mr. 305” Returns to Home Track

“Mr. 305” Returns to Home Track

This Weekend as a NASCAR Team Owner

Pitbull and Daniel Suarez (#NASCAR)

Michael McDowell captured the 2021 NASCAR season-opener on February 14 in grand fashion, taking the checkered flag in the coveted DAYTONA 500 at the venerable Daytona International Speedway. With no NASCAR Cup Series wins in his 14 seasons and 357 starts entering the race, the 36-year old McDowell became the DAYTONA 500 champion as a huge underdog.

His rise to the top of the NASCAR world required a great deal of patience and perseverance. It’s those same traits that recently attracted Armando Christian Perez – better known across the world as Pitbull – into the world of NASCAR as a team owner.

In January, the Grammy-award winning musical artist and Miami native became a part-owner of first-year team, Trackhouse Racing. This weekend, Pitbull will be making his first trip to his home track as a team owner, as Homestead-Miami Speedway hosts the NASCAR Xfinity Series Contender Boats 250 on Saturday (4:30 pm, FS1/ MRN-Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 90), to be followed by the Dixie Vodka 400 on Sunday (3:30 pm, FOX/ MRN-Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 90). Daniel Suárez will be piloting the No. 99 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE for Trackhouse Racing in Sunday’s premier series race.

Along with former NASCAR driver Justin Marks, Pitbull, also known as “Mr. 305” and “Mr. Worldwide,” is hoping to propel the team to the same success that he has had in his esteemed musical career.

“What I love about NASCAR is the ultimate underdog story. I'm your ultimate underdog,” said Perez, a Miami native. “When you're an underdog, you’ve got a chip on your shoulder. You're a fighter, you're a champion, and you welcome failure. What I mean by that, failure becomes the mother of your success. I tell people all the time there's no losing, only learning; no failure, only opportunities; no problems, just solutions.”

Pitbull’s success has not been limited to his music. Having grown up in Miami and attended Coral Park High School, he understood the need to improve the path to victory for Miami’s youth. In 2013 he opened the first SLAM Academy in the heart of Little Havana, a tuition-free public charter middle and high school. Sports Leadership and Management now operates nationwide, including Atlanta and Las Vegas. Starting that school was done from the heart, similar to his venture into NASCAR team ownership.

Getting involved in the team, this is deeper than sponsorships, this is a movement,” Perez said “This is a revolution; taking a sport and creating a culture because when we first opened SLAM, we had brought a NASCAR car to SLAM the first day eight years ago. If you would have seen the look on those kids' faces when they saw that car, they just had no clue that it was actually something that was tangible.”

Through his team ownership, involvement with SLAM and his music, Pitbull hopes to create unity in his space. For many years, NASCAR has been known to bring generations of families together, forging memories that last a lifetime. It’s a primary goal of his and something he feels that is well within reach.

“It goes to show you through inspiring, no matter what, we're always going to find a way to bring people together,’ Perez said. “That's what I'm all about. As you can see in these times we're living in right now, the most important thing is to let everybody know out there there's only one most important race, it's the human race. It was these races are about at this point, bringing the sport, creating the culture, letting everybody out there know through the races, through the cars, through our stories, we just want everybody out there to enjoy and we're going to utilize it as a form of uniting everybody out there.”

Only a limited number of premium seating is available for the Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami, as socially-distanced grandstand availabilities have reached capacity. Premium options to purchase for the NASCAR Cup Series race are in the following areas:

Champions Club - An enclosed, air-conditioned area complete with upscale food and beverage offerings. The most popular premium seating area on property, access comes with reserved outdoor chairback seating. Sits high atop Turn 1 with one of the most breathtaking views in all of NASCAR.

GEICO RV Parking – Fans with RVs have the opportunity to be either inside or outside the 1.5-mile venue. As part of GEICO Grounds Turn 2, reserved spots are complete with water and electrical hookups, while on the outside of the track there are two RV parks, one reserved and the other non-reserved.

For information on how to purchase the above, fans can visit https://www.homesteadmiamispeedway.com/upgrades or call 866-409-RACE (7223).

One Race after COVID-19 Violation

Chip Ganassi Fined and Suspended

NASCAR officials issued a one-race suspension Monday to team owner Chip Ganassi for violating COVID-19 event protocols last weekend at Daytona International Speedway.

Ganassi violated Section 12.8.1.b of the NASCAR Rule Book, a subsection of the member conduct guidelines that includes compliance with COVID-19 event procedures. Officials said that Ganassi’s penalty was “for bringing into the competition area a non-essential individual that was restricted from the footprint.”

Ganassi was also fined $30,000. Pending any potential appeal, he is barred from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Chip Ganassi Racing is still permitted to field its two entries — the No. 1 Chevrolet for driver Kurt Busch and the No. 42 Chevy for Ross Chastain — in Sunday’s event.

“Unbelievable, I don’t even have words for it,” Ben Rhodes said after climbing out of this truck just below the flag-stand on the frontstretch. “I don’t even know what to say, this is so cool.

“I just have to thank my team. The Bombardier Tundra was fast all day. ThorSport Racing gave me a truck that handled this year and we were fast. Rich (Lushes) is a really good crew chief. It’s good to be paired up with him and all of the guys on my team. I’m just thrilled. I don’t know what to say. I’ve been on cloud nine all week, so it’s above that. I’m just so happy.” (Ben Rhodes)

“Never fun being the first loser,” Sheldon Creed said. “But my guys brought a fast truck and I felt like we were on top of the strategy there going to slicks early. Man, got hit by a lapper there leading and I don’t think that did us any favors and got to the lead, saving fuel and then worked way back to the lead got pushed out the way on the restart, just doing everything I could there. Wished it could have stayed green.”

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series next race is March 5 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (9 p.m. ET on FS1, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

Castrol® Supports Roush Fenway Racing To Power First Carbon Neutral NASCAR Race Team

Roush Fenway will be powered by Castrol as it delivers carbon reduction and offset programs across team's operations both on and off the track

Roush Fenway #NASCAR Driver Ryan Newman #6

Roush Fenway Racing today announced that the team has become the first carbon neutral NASCAR race team, powered by its official sponsor Castrol. Throughout the 2021 NASCAR season, Castrol will power the Roush Fenway team by supporting Roush Fenway's carbon reduction and offset programs across their operations both on and off the track.

"As an organization, Roush Fenway has always been environmentally conscious," said Roush Fenway President Steve Newmark. "Our hope with this program is to demonstrate that every business, small or large, and regardless of industry, can contribute to address global climate challenges. We hope to set an example and highlight that small steps by many can make a real difference."

Roush Fenway has achieved carbon neutrality for the entire organization including operations, the two race teams and race cars for the period between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2020, according to the PAS 2060 standard as verified by ERM CVS (independent 3rd party).

Roush Fenway #NASCAR Driver Ryan Newman #6

The partnership between Roush Fenway and Castrol is designed to help the team better manage its greenhouse gas emissions by tracking, quantifying, and reducing those emissions, and offsetting the balance with high-quality carbon offsets.

"At Castrol, we believe that small steps together can make a difference," said Castrol's Vice President of Marketing Rayne Pacek. "We want to play our part and teaming up with Roush Fenway to achieve their carbon neutral ambitions is a notable milestone in the sport and another step in supporting our partners in their efforts to drive change."

In addition to working with Roush Fenway, Castrol plans to drive change by expanding its carbon neutral product range, reducing the carbon used in its production, and offering a new and expanded range of services – all to give consumers and customers more lower carbon choices.

"It's an honor to pave the way in the sport and bring awareness to the importance of reducing your carbon footprint," said Roush Fenway Driver Ryan Newman. "Every business can make choices to help promote a more sustainable future and this program makes me proud to be part of a team that takes the initiative to drive change."

As part of the program, Newman's traditionally green and red Castrol No 6. Ford Mustang will don an all-white paint scheme featuring a grey Castrol badge and muted logos from partners like Ford Motor Company, Kohler Generators, Oscar Mayer, Coca-Cola, Guaranteed Rate, MacTools, and Wyndham Rewards to show their support of the initiative. This paint scheme will be used at the Daytona Road Course on Sunday, February 21, 2021.

The initiative is part of Castrol's ongoing relationship with Roush Fenway and is another step towards supporting its partners in achieving their lower carbon ambitions. Consumers interested in learning more about Roush Fenway carbon neutral initiative powered by Castrol can visit Castrol.com/DrivingForChange. Visitors can also enter for a chance to win Ryan Newman race-used gear following the Daytona Road Race on February 21, 2021.

New Reality TV Show Puts Audience Behind the Wheel of a Race Car

New Reality TV Show Puts Audience Behind the Wheel of a Race Car
Damon Surzyshyn /New Reality TV Show Puts Audience Behind the Wheel of a Race Car

A new reality series is coming to CBS Sports Net this weekend. Going Pro SRO America, from Nomad Digital allows viewers to see first-hand what it's like to compete in pro racing in the SRO TC America car race series.

Going Pro SRO America follows Damon Surzyshyn's amateur-to-pro journey as part of the Subaru Motorsport USA team competing at the greatest race tracks in America.

The seven-episode series provides a glimpse into the world of professional racing where the audience gets full access to every part of the racing experience. From race strategy, car prep, in the pits and the behind the wheel, viewers will see what it takes to compete and win at the professional level.

"Racing is fun and stressful," says Surzyshyn. "Racing professionally for the first time with a camera documenting every move adds another layer, and when you're also producing the show during a pandemic, well, that's really over the top, as I discovered."

Despite the hurdles, Surzyshyn states that making the leap to pro racing has been exhilarating.

"Amateur racing is about fun, and pro racing is about winning." he says. "It's so much more competitive, and there is a ton of pressure to max out the potential of the car. Racing against huge talents such as Nick Wittmer, Mark and Mat Pombo, and Eric Powell just took everything to a much higher level."

Going Pro SRO America premieres on CBS SN with back-to-back episodes starting at 2:30pm ET Sunday February 21st with a replay at 10pm PT.

Bridget, 19, has been driving ARCA West since 2019 with her mom as crew chief. Sarah is a former short-course off-road racer herself, and her husband Adam serves as the on-track spotter. The upcoming nine-race ARCA Menards Series West season starts on March 12 and runs through November 11.

“I’ve grown up in an environment where both my parents are hands-on with tools,” said Bridget, who is the only full-time female racer on the Arca West series. “I’m proud that GEARWRENCH recognizes this and is very supportive of my racing program in 2021 as I continue to chase my goals.”

NASCAR Race Mom binge watched the first three of the ten-episode season. Lots of Laughs. However, what surprised this writer was the NASCAR insider realities intermingle in the comedy. “Congratulations to Michael, Drew, Jerry, Bob and the Front Row Motorsports organization for winning the Daytona 500,” said Doug Yates, President and CEO of Roush Yates Engines. “This was such an amazing weekend of racing, to win both the Cup and Xfinity races is such a blessing. Congrats, to Austin, Brian, Roger, and Team Penske for winning the Xfinity race and marking Roush Yates Engines’ 150th NASCAR Xfinity win. I’m so proud of our entire team and our partnership with Ford Performance to power these fast Fords.”

It was a story book ending for McDowell, recording the Ford Mustang’s first Daytona 500 win and his first win in his 358th career start. McDowell is the eighth driver to get his first win at Daytona.

“I just can’t believe it,” McDowell commented. “The only thing I can think of is just God is so good. For so many years I’ve just been grinding it out trying to stay in this sport. Bob Jenkins gave me a great opportunity to go full-time in a competitive car and Drew Blickensderfer and my whole entire team we’ve been working so hard for years to get into this position and I’m so thankful to Love’s Travel Stops and Speeco and Ford, Doug Yates. All of my Ford partners out there. I just can’t believe it. I’m so thankful. It’s amazing.”

The 500-mile, Great American Race all came down to the last lap. McDowell, following Ford teammates Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski, found himself in position to take the lead after Logano and Keselowski had an on-track incident in Turn 3 of the final lap. McDowell took the lead, and it became a drag race to the checkered flag with Chase Elliott and Austin Dillon. After a video tape review, McDowell was announced the official winner, beating Elliott by over a car length as the raced ended under caution.

“There’s no better way to start the season than by winning NASCAR’s biggest race,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “There aren’t many things that Mustang hasn’t achieved in its storied history, but winning the Daytona 500 was one of them and we’re excited about adding that to the list.”

Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Kevin Harvick finished P4 and Cole Custer P11, while Team Penske teammates Logano and Keselowski finished P12 and P13 respectively.

In an overtime finish, the current NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion, Cindric held off a hard charging Brett Moffitt on the last lap, to take the checkered flag .104 seconds in front of Moffitt to record his ninth career win. This also marked the first Xfinity win at Daytona for team owner Roger Penske.

“What a way to kick off the season,” commented Cindric. “I’m really proud of the speed our boys brought with me in the Verizon 5G Ford Mustang. I really feel like over the no practice races we made our superspeedway cars better, so to be able to showcase that tonight makes me really proud, proud of the effort of the guys in the shop and obviously our road crew. To start off our season like this is incredible.”
